Can I install windows home server 2011 on a mac mini?

Hey guys and girls...
Can I install windows home server 2011 on a mac mini? If so how?

WHS is 64-bit. Genius are really not versed in Boot Camp or Windows, let alone anything not on the "approved" list of Windows versions.
Most of the problems are with burning ISO, or the SuperDrive. It should have seen the NTFS partition. Disk Utility is known to be trouble, burning it on your Mac Mine but iwth Windows 7....?
Seeing you have Windows 7, format the partition to NTFS 160GB you want and then exit and boot WHS installer.
Or run the install from Windows 7.
In past, WHS supported TimeMachine, streaming video, supported iTunes (that was broken/disabled it seems by Apple with 10.0), as well as even SuperDuper backups.
Main idea is to have some network attached drives.

I have both a ISO and Burned it to a dvd useing windows 7 built in ISO burning software, Its a 64 bit copy (got from microsoft download website from my dads microsoft account).
It is enouth for the OS but it runs slowish on the mac mini (latest core 2 duo 2.4ghz model) The Idea was to have it backup my pc and laptop to a usb drive and act as a media centre pc (connected to av receaver and tv and on a gigabit network with a 2TB nas)
Since it looks like this may not work, whats the best way to make it into a media centure? mac osx? windows 7? plex? whats best and good?
I'd avoid USB like the plague. Why not use your PC instead? If I was going to use a Mini for WHS, I'd just use the Mini solely for Windows and not have OS X (you can boot OS X off an external drive anyway).

  • How do I install windows home server on my power mac?

My power mac g4 is the graphite version I think and I put the disc in my computer and booted up and I pressed alt on my windows keyboard ( i think its options on a mac keyboard) but when I got to the screen where it displays the options to boot from the only one I saw was the hard drive? I tried putting my xp disc in too and that didn't show up either?

If you just want to share files, that can be done with Mac OS X File Sharing. It is already available in "regular" Mac OS X, and all you have to do is turn it on.
For best performance, you can attain "near Hard_Drive" speeds using Gigabit Ethernet cabling and Gigabit Ethernet Switches. Wireless in quite a bit slower.

  • Setting up Windows Home server 2011 on Microserver

This is the first time I have played with a server although lots of experience of setting up desktops.  I have a HP proliant microserver and have added a couple of extra 500gb drives.  I have just installed Windows Home Server 2011 and can't see the extra drives in windows explorer.    I assume that I need to change something in the BIOS or am I missing something?  My aim is to set the extra drives up as some form of RAID or mirroring.  Any help welcome.
    Thanks

You should use HP smart start DVD to install the Windows Home Server. If you are booting directly from the Windows DVD it would some times not detect the drivers because of the hardware compatibility issue. You should contact the the vendor and seek help
    from him.

  • How to install windows xp on bootcamp on new Mac mini?

How can i install windows xp on bootcamp on new Mac mini?
I know that i should get an external usb optical drive, but buying such hardware for one use is a waste of money. Is there any other method?
I currently own a MacBook white, and really like the configuration. I it possible to copy the image of bootcamp to new mac mini? If so, what will happen to hardware and drivers?

1- copy the exact image of the winxp installation dc to USB
2- start bootcamp assistant, go through everything, till rebooting
3- boot from USB (hold ALT and select the USB volume)
4- go through winxp setup and done!
    Am I missing anything?
I think that USB would be readable only on Mac os or winxp, but will the winxp installer read from USB?
    Correct me if wrong.
Having read further websites, I am now a bit more dubious you can do this, at least with an XP installer.
However if you have a USB memory stick and an existing Windows computer (even a Boot Camp one) or can borrow one you could try using the free WinToFlash utility to make a supposedly bootable USB memory stick of the installer. See http://wintoflash.com/overview/en/
The problem is XP predates EFI firmare and XP only really knows BIOS firmware. As such (supposedly) XP would have problems booting from a USB device fully - it might lose connection part way through. Windows Vista and 7 do support EFI firmware.
The other approach I mentioned of temporarily moving the hard disk from the Mini to the MacBook so you can use the MacBook internal CD/DVD drive would work - be careful of the cables. Fortunately a new Mac mini and an old MacBook are two of the easier models to get at the hard disk. See http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook-Core-2-Duo-Hard-Drive-Replacement/514/1 (they also list other MacBook models) and http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-Mac-Mini-Mid-2011-Hard-Drive-Replacement/ 6422/1
Regardless of which method you try, the first step would be on the Mac mini to run Boot Camp Assistant and to create the partition for Windows. Then via either method try booting from a Windows XP installer.
As I have taken Macs apart many times, I personally might go the swapping the hard disk over route.

  • TS1490 i am running Windows Home Server 2011 and iTunes can't seem to connect to the iTunes Store nor run Genius on my Library.  What do I need to do?

I am running Windows Home Server 2011 and have installed iTunes on my dedicated server, attached to my router.  I can't connect to the iTunes Store nor run Genius on the server ONLY (iTunes runs fine on by two other PCs and my Apple TV and I share the libary that resides on the server).  I am running a very current version of iTunes 64 bit.  I have run the connectivity test and it failed.
My guess is that there is some setting in the Server software that i need to change to let iTunes access urls or computers on the internet.  Does anyone have any experience with this software combination?
    Thank you

Some guy managed to get this to work. The following link is for iTunes 10.5 but it should work for the current release.

  • Locked Out of Windows Home Server 2011 - Removed Password

    Hi All
I made a bit of a boo boo. This relates to Windows Home Server 2011. Basically I needed my server to boot directly to desktop and not go to a login screen. I thought I know I will just remove the password (bad decision).
It now goes to the login screen and it won't let me login with no password. It says something about not being allowed.
So I am now stuck at the Login screen. I don't really want to have to re-install the OS again, so any help would be great.
    Cheers

    Hello neilmjones,
mmm, there is something strange: if you was able to reset password to blank, then the System was set to permit blank passwords (System Policies), so you should be able to login too.
Are you sure you reset password to blank ?
Answering to your first question, once you resolve login issue, you can follow this

  • Upgrade from Windows Home Server 2011

Even though Windows Server 2012 Essentials is being mentioned as a replacement for Windows Home Server 2011, there doesn't seem to be any documentation or mention of can you upgrade from Windows Home Server 2011 to Windows Server 2012 Essentials?
Will this work with the beta download and will we then be able to upgrade this version to the RC and/or release version?
As you may guess I have a Windows Home Server 2011 and am interested in looking at Windows Server 2012 Essentials to see what it offers me. The storage spaces sounds exactly what I want to replace the drive extender on the previous home server version. The
problem is that I don't mind sacrificing my present server box by installing the beta but it would be nice if it actually retained what settings it could via an upgrade option, which I could then have a chance of using with a proper release version.

Just clarifying about the 'upgrade path' and 32b vs 64b.
Yes, no in-place upgrade. However, one could theorise about some form of 'migration' being possible, where the list of users, the content of your shares, the current backups, would be 'moved' from old box to new.
I was in fact pretty sure no such process existed. (Wouldn't it be neat though? AND in future _at least theoretically_ possible, using processes similar to SBS AD migration.)
From this perspective putting the new box onto the network is similar to replacing WHSv1 with WHS11, in that nothing is carried over. No gain, but no lesser. Working on currently available information.
The later comment about the work laptop is, TTBOMK, a resounding 'NO'. When attempting to join a member of another AD the 'connect' process stated 'You must 1st remove the PC from the other AD'. I haven't tested this extensively but believe that PC's _capable_
of operating in an AD (Pro, vs Home, versions) will be made members of the WS12E AD. It is only PC's that do not have 'domain join' capability that are left in workgroup mode.
    TTBOMK, AFAICS, so far, etc...

  • WVC80N & Windows Home Server 2011 R2

I have successfully installed my WVC80N on my network and can view it from my laptop and phone both when i am on my network and over the internet.
The problem i am having now is trying to get it to work with my Windows Home Server 2011 R2.  I can not get it to display the video unfortunately and was wondering if anyone knew why this was happening.  My best guess is that my Home Server has a port blocked that is used to receive the video.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be a browser setting on the server computer. Try to check the browser settings and you may need to adjust the firewall settings on the computer as well. And if possible, try to use another browser to view the video. By the way, even on local access for the camera or video it does not work?

  • Windows Home Server 2011 and Windows 8.1 desktop

My questions is whether a Windows Live account and a local account can be combined in Windows 8.  I asked this question in Microsoft Community and
an MS employee said I should ask my question here.
Is there a way to have both active?
I want to reap the benefits of having a live account to keep everything in sync and fully utilize the features of Windows 8.1 but I have a Windows Home Server 2011 that requires that I have a local user account that matches the server side so that I can
    use resources on the server.
I've seen lots of tutorials for switching between the two account types but nothing for combining them.
    Is this even possible?
    Thanks in advance

Your question has not been answered.
Windows Home Server 2011 does not use domains, so even if you had Windows 8.1 Pro, you'd still be left without a solution. I have one PC with Windows 8.1 Enterprise and that does work with Home Server; and a laptop with Windows 7 Pro and that works fine
too. Like you, I have issues with Windows 8.1 Pro.
Does anyone from Microsoft Server actually read these posts?
    @PeterPensive,
the OP's original question was relating to "linking/combining" an MS Account with a Win8.x local account. That question was answered. (the answer is no), so, for a WHS scenario, linked accounts aren't possible, but, in Win8.x, an MS Account might be suitable
    for use with WHS.
Are you confirming that an MS Account on Win8.x works ok with WHS?

  • Cannot connect from iMac to Windows Home Server 2011 shares

    Hi guys,
I am having dificulties connecting from iMac to Windows Home Server 2011 shares.
First of all it takes so long time to discover the share in iMac, which it's called "mediaserver". After finding it i cannot connect and gives "Connection Failed: message. If i choose "Connect As.." option i wait some time and then pops out with an error: "There was a problem connecting to the server "mediaserver". The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
If i try from Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server ... write in Server Address : smb://mediaserver it fails. But if i write the IP address, like: smb://192.168.1.42 it works after couple of tries. If i try now to Make an Alias for the share i get "The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (eror code -8060)."
Has anyone experienced these problems ? I have updated to Mac OS X version 10.7.3. Could that be the problem ?
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,
    Simi

You need to reinstall the updated WHS connector for Mac.  You should then be able to access your shares on WHS 2011.
The problem I'm having is I can't get Time Capsule to recognize the WHS 2011 mapped folders that show up on the desktop as a drive, so Backup won't work.

  • How do you view Windows Home Server 2011 Video on iPad 2

I have uploaded iPhone 4s .mov files from iPhone 4s to Windows Home Server 2011.  The iphone can play these back but the iPad Safari reports downloading but does nothing after that.  Will not play video.   I can email the iPhone 4s video to iPad 2 and view the video but just not through web browser.

    Lancem631-
I think your MOV files are compatible with the iPad, but are not recognized as being compatible in Safari.  This is something that should be reported by providing feedback to Apple at <iPad Feedback>.  If more people report the problem, Apple is more likely to fix it.
To work around the problem, you can convert the MOV files to MP4, which should be compatible.  One program that can do this conversion is HandBrake.  <Download HandBrake>

  • Officejet pro 6830 & windows home server 2011

Our Officejet Pro 6500 just died, and I replaced it with an Officejet Pro 6830.  The printer is connected to our server, which runs Windows Home Server 2011.  While installing I learned there is not a driver for Home Server 2011?  I also discovered that my wife cannot print wirelessly because the printer is hardwired to the network.  Really?  Everything worked with the printed that died.  These two issues are pretty major for us.  Are there workarounds?

Your Win8 PC is likely to have come with UEFI and uses GPT hard disks, so you need to install a hotfix on the server to allow it to back up the client PCs.
There’s a separate fix for each server version:
    SBS 2011 Essentials
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2781270
    Windows Storage Server 2008R2 Essentials
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2781274
    Windows Home Server 2011
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2781272
Install the hotfix, reboot the server, and you should be able to back up the PC, although in my experience, you also need to exclude any partitions on the PC that don't have drive letters.

  • TS130 and Windows Home Server 2011

    Hello,
Just got a New TS130 1105B2U and am curious if anyone has used Windows Home Server 2011.  I did not see it on the list.
Also, I notice there is a 4TB cap on the drive support.  Is that only for the hardware RAID support?  Is it possible to install an additional drive controller in conjunction with the motherboard or is the cap based on the BIOS?
I looked around the forum but could not find an answer.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Lenovo never announced support for Windows Home Server 2011.  As it was a consumer-oriented OS, it was not in-line with our strategy for those systems.  WHS2011 runs on core of Windows Server 2008 R2 and is the close cousin of Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, both of which are fully qualified for use on ThinkServer TS130.   You should be able to find compatible drivers at support.lenovo.com using either of those as your match to get your server functional.
Support note: Lenovo would be unable to provide any level of support for the OS.  This does not impact your hardware support.  I'm going to guess you are familiar with these types of restictions since WHS2011 is only sold as an OEM licence.
As to your question about drive capacity, that must be an old revision of the manual.  Lenovo has since annouced 3TB drives, making 6TB the maximum capacity by the system given Lenovo ThinkServer-branded options in a 2-bay system.
Below are the drives available for ThinkServer TS130:
    0A89470
ThinkServer 500GB 3.5" 7.2K Enterprise SATA 6Gbps Cabled Hard Drive
    0A89471
ThinkServer 1TB 3.5" 7.2K Enterprise SATA 6Gbps Cabled Hard Drive
    0A89472
ThinkServer 2TB 3.5" 7.2K Enterprise SATA 6Gbps Cabled Hard Drive
