Can I just install Leopard over Tiger?

I have an OS 10.4 Tiger MacBook Pro and I'm thinking about upgrading it to Leopard. What happens when you do that? Does the installer wipe out everything on your HD giving you a blank system where you have to reinstall all your apps and so on, or does it sort of upgrade the infrastructure, leaving your apps and files in place?
I haven't run into too many instances where I couldn't run something because I don't have the latest OS, but there have been a few. Would I be better off waiting a while and just buying a new machine when the time comes?
I have a lot of stuff like Photoshop and music software. I also have various development tools like XCode and Eclipse. I also have drivers for stuff like my scanner and digital camera and whatnot.
Thanks for any info on this topic.
Thanks!

Absolutely! I did it that way on both my MBPs with perfect success.
Just be sure to backup Tiger onto an external drive for several reasons:
1 Stuff happens
2 You may want to keep some old Tiger stuff, and if you use a cloner for the backup, you can always boot into it and use it.
On each of my two MBPs, I created a small partition for Tiger and cloned Tiger onto it. I use the larger partition for my TM backups.
I have been using both MBPs running Leopard since a short time after Leopard was released and have not experienced any of the issues others have had. Also both my systems are up-to-date with the exception of the latest Safari.

  • Install Leopard over Tiger Server

    Hi,
I want to "archive and install" Leopard over existing Tiger Server. Will not be installing the server version of Leopard, just the normal OS.
Are there potential problems (other than the usual suspects) with doing a simple "archive and install" over the existing Tiger --server-- OS? Can I just do new install without sinking the ship? (Fairly experienced w/macs, know the usual routine re OS installs but am shaky when it comes to server stuff)
    Thanks,
    Ron W.

Actually the Server version is only required if you are going to be backing up your server over the network. If you run Retrospect on the server itself, you can get by with the Workgroup edition. The developer has a chart that explains it all:
    http://www.emcinsignia.com/products/smb/retroformac/comparison/
I don't recall the details, but I even think there was an upgrade path from the Desktop version to the Workgroup version, although I had to call the developer and specifically ask for it. Regardless, the prices aren't that bad. Check smalldog.

  • Install Leopard over tiger from cd, overwrite or update?

I want to install leopard on my macbook with tiger 10.4.8 from cd.
Can i install leopard from cd on my macbook without overwriting everything.
So when i install leopard over my tiger, will it overwrite everything else or will it update the os with all files and setttings in tact?

    Hi gizeh12,
I'd recommend backing up (on an external HD, CD, DVD, thumb drive, etc) any important data. While the upgrade option is designed to preserve all of your data, settings and applications, Apple strongly recommends (as do many users on these boards) that you always maintain a current backup of your data. While the percentage is very small that you'll have a hardware or system failure during the upgrade, it's always better to be prepared then in panic mode.

  • Help - tried to install leopard over tiger on iBook G4 and cannot boot up

My ibook G4 apparently does not have enough disk space to enable me to install leopard; shame, BUT in process of finding this out I cannot restart in Tiger - machine spends 3-4 mins trying then powers down to black screen.
    Any help/advice gratefully received...
    Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Do you have a Backup?
Do you have a bootable external drive?
Do you have another Mac around so you could use FW Target Mode to clear some space...

If none of the above, then using your Install Disk to Erase everything and start over completely is about the only ting left.
Due to temporary files, RAM Discs, VM, you need twice what they say minimum to install... 20 GB free.

  • Can't UInstal Snow Leopard over Tiger

Hello, I need some help installing Snow Leopard on my MacBook. I have Tiger installed 10.4.11 and have been having a lot of problems with it recently. The Apple store advised I buy the Snow Leopard Mac Box Set which I have done. I have made all the backup's on a separate hard drive, but now when I try and do the install it will not work. It runs for about 5 or 10 minutes and then comes up with the message "MAC OSX could not be installed on your computer. The Installer could not copy the necessary support files. Click restart or restart your computer and try installing again". I have tried installing twice now with no luck, both times the same error. I have a total hard drive of 148.73GB and I have 64.41GB free.
Does any one have any ideas to help me
    Thankyou very much.

Launch Disk Utility & select your MB's hard drive from the list. In the bottom of the window you will see the *Partition Map Scheme* listed. Does it say "GUID Partition Table"? If not, you will have to reformat the drive for the installer to work.
Also make sure your MB can connect to the Internet during the early stages of the install process. If you use the default 'upgrade in place' method (which I recommend), the pre-install app will try to download certain updated info from Apple's servers & store that in the files it writes to the hard drive before the restart from the DVD that actually upgrades the OS.

  • Can you just install CS4 over top of CS3 ?

    I installed CS4 on a clean PC.
No problems to report on the instalation there.
I am wanting to install CS4 on my laptop that has CS3 on it.
I'm having troubles finding info on what I need to do (if anything) to aid in a smooth transition.
Any suggestions on where to look would be most welcomed.
    Thank you

    Fantastic.
    Away I go then.
    To CS4 and beyond.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Installing Leopard over Tiger: "MacOs X cannot start up from this [volume]"

That's the message I get on an iMac dual 2-GHz. Each partition has a yellow '!' with the message "MacOs X cannot start up from this [volume]" (I think it says volume) not 'cannot be installed on this..."
Trouble is, it says this about the current 10.4.11 start-up volume. Is this a GUID partition map thing? Any ways around it?
    TIA,

That's easy to test. Launch Disk Utility, select that drive (not volume) in the column on the left, and look for "Partition Map Scheme" at the bottom of the window.
    Any ways around it?
If it's not already GUID, you'll need to repartition the drive. That will erase everything on it.

  • Installing Leo over Tiger: is this wise?

    hi guys
wondering whether there have been good successes of installing Leo over Tiger. What would be the best approach to do this so all my system info isn't lost in the upgrade?
    cheers and appreciate any advice

    Hi
Just done this on 24 macs (including a server). Mixture of MacBooks and iMac Aluminiums. A MacPro as the Server. All 10.4.10. Straight forward upgrade to 10.5.1 for the clients using NetBoot and then upgraded to 10.5.4. Apart from one iMac which had drive/directory problems all working fine.
However this was in an office environment - Word, Mail and some low level database work. In a Design Studio environment I would have archived/installed followed by an application reinstall where needed.

  • How many times can you clean install leopard on the same computer?

How many times can you clean install leopard on the same computer? Will the leopard dvd run out of installations and not let you install anymore?

    Hi colman Prez;
Now that the funny comments have been made, I have a serious question and that why are you worry about reinstalling Leopard with an Erase & Install which is what I take that you mean when you say clean install. In actually fact there is no such thing in OS X as a clean install.
I am curious because in all the years I have used OS X, I have yet to do an Erase & Install yet.
I know with Windows that they suggest reformatting and reinstalling at the drop of a hat but that isn't true with OS X.

  • Do I need to re-install the WHOLE suite or can I just install just Encore and Premier Pro?????

I'm having a problem with my Encore and Premier Pro software. I have the Adobe Creative Suite Production Studio Premium CS5.1. Encore will not allow me to burn DVDS. I'm getting an 52102 error...won't allow it to finish writing...ALSO Premier Pro stops after capturing about 5 or 10 minutes of video and freezes...do I need to re-install my software??? and if I do... do I need to install the WHOLE suite or can I just install just Encore and Premier Pro????? I can burn and image file and it burns DVDs on my old Corel software so I know its not the burner or the DVDs I'm using..I am in the middle of a big project for kids at school really need to figure this out...not getting anywhere online. Can anyone help??? Has anyone had this problem?  Hope I'm posting this to right place. THANKS!

I haven't had 52102 error, but seen it discussed. Here are a couple of links
    Error = Sense Code 52102
Encore Hardware Error Sense Code 52102
Burning the iso file to the dvd may not be the same process as burning directly from Encore to dvd, and so may not exhibit the same error, if any. See response 1 in the first link.

  • HT1338 Why can't I install Leopard for PowerPC on my old Mac Mini?

Why can't I install Leopard for PowerPC on my old Mac Mini? The massage "This can not be installed on this computer" appears.

My thoughts are that your difficulties could be one of these:
your non-retail DVD may only work on a very limited range of Mac minis
the installer may not like your new RAM
the installer may not like the language change especially if the disk has not been erased first
I have seen a little evidence for 3 in the code of other Leopard install DVDs - they appear to have less stringent language checks for erased volumes. Whilst I have never modified model specific installers I have modified retail installers to ignore speed and RAM checks.
    My advice:
back up your whole mini hard disk to an external disk - see notes
erase the hard disk and partition into 2 volumes with Leopard install DVD
try to install Leopard on one volume
put original OS on the other volume
    Notes:
Carbon Copy Cloner can be used to backup the whole hard disk
ensure the mini can be booted from the external disk before you erase the internal disk

  • Can I just install windows 7

I have a new lenovo laptop installed with windows 8 (I don't have the model number), sold in the US. I have a completely  legitimate windows 7 disc (sold in the UK).  Can I just install windows 7, assuming I don't care about windows 8 (I have no interest in dual booting, and have no data on the laptop)?
Speculation about legal issues not required.

Yes, just turn off secureboot in the BIOS. Windows 7 will not boot on a new windows 8 machine that has secureboot on.
nothing legal to speculate on, as you bought a retail DVD.

  • Can I just install the drives off the website or

Can I just install the drivers off the website or do I have to install all that junk on the CD first ?
    I really don't need Aol .

You didnt mention which card you have but assuming you have an X-fi variation no you don't have to install from the CD, unless of course you want the fancy mixer and such as those are not included in the driver downloads. The install cd does let you select just the stuff you want.

  • Can I just install Safari

    Can I just install Safari

    As opposed to...?
Safari is integrated in OS X so you already have it, unless it became deleted as a result of some corruption. In that case reinstalling OS X will be required, and likely more extensive work than that due to the corruption.
It's not clear what you would like to do.
