Can I just reset my dvd driver to check if a problem is software based?

I’m running an I-Mac OSX 10.6.8 that is experiencing the common issue of not playing DVDs. I have tried several approaches such as SMC, PRAM and other resets as well as hard ware checks with no luck but heard it could be software/driver issue with 10.6.8? Is it possible to check if my DVD drivers have automatically updated since being connected to the Internet?

If rerunning the updater as Klaus suggests does not restore function, the next thing to try is a drive cleaning disk. Slot-loading optical drives get very dirty and that can make the drive unresonsive.
A friend had a Mac with a slot-loading drive and was told by an Apple Authorized Service Provider that the drive had to be replaced at a cost of about US$150. I loaned him my drive cleaning disk and the old drive startng working again.
Such cleanign disks are available at most computer shops, office superstaores that sell computer equipment, or from home entertainment stores.

I actualy just got mine changed at Apple.
Before you get it replaced or serviced, try doing a SMC RESET or NVRAM RESET.  If that doesn't work, then take it to Apple.
Sometimes cleaning the area works but you have to take the battery out which is a pain.
So I decided to take to Apple and they charged me $79 for a new trackpad assembly.  Total I spent for trackpad and labor was $104.00.  If they're not busy, you can wait for it if they have the trackpad assembly in stock.

  • How do I fix my early 2008 mac pro boot hard disk. Lost everything when it crashed hard, can not reinstal via cd/dvd drive... are there any fix get it boot from dvd drive?

I have an early 2008 MAC PRO Quad Core 3.0ghz processor. 8 Gig of rams, with a 1 Gig memory  Radeon 5770 HD Graphic Card running the latest Version of Snow Leopard OS.  Last week lighting struck the house take out all of my hard drives (4) thank god the surge protector mitigated the mother board from damaged, use the Parted Magic to check out the motherboard and it intact with no damage. I can boot with the Parted-magic and be able surf and post this question to this forums. I replaced a newly formatted hard  drive and trying to installed OS X Mountain Lions to the new drive, but unable to have it boot in my MAC PRO DVD, I get the usual chimes during the booting processed but the screen remain blackout, but able to boot with Parted-Magic to surf the web and access Apple sites/forums.
I am not well verse in using the Parted_Magic to repair or get my-mac to boot normally so I can reinstall OS X. Any help would appreciated.
    Thank you
    Disabled Veteran.

Go to System Profile and look, does it say "MacPro3,1"?
    That is 2008.
FBDIMM would be 800MHz. Did you use older slower 667MHz in yours?
You can but take a hit in performance.
    Sounds like MacPro1,1.
Mac Pro (3.0GHz quad core (dual CPUs) 8GB 667 RAM)
In 2007 March an 8-core 3GHz did come out 2,1.
    So just to be clear.

It was all working fine a couple of days ago. At the time it randomly shut down I was trying to use Boot Camp to create a Windows 7 area,
Whenever you want to install Windows, remove all the drives other than the one Windows goes to. And if you use a dedicated drive YOU DO NOT NEED Boot Camp Assist, unless you use XP, which really is limited and crippled (one processor, 1.9GB RAM support).
And when it freezes, your only choice is to nuke (reformat) and restore or get out that backup CLONE you made before (ie, Step #1 in the Boot Camp Guide).
Sure that whole NTFS / MBR / GUID could be an issue, but you should just have a blank drive or clone.
No don't bother Apple, they seem to not have a good sense about Windows on Mac Pro anyway.
Other than zap pram from cold boot / tried booting with NO drives inside and just 10.6. DVD - should be fine.
You should be fine iwth Windows 7 DVD and one drive, or even XP.
Make sure you take your time and reconnect cards etc properly and any cables.
Booting from OS X DVDs may not work if there is a drive with a totally shot directory or partition table. Put them in FW case and turn on AFTER OS X is booted.

  • Can i fix my cd/dvd drive myself?

it no longer recognizes cd's or dvd's! when i insert a disk, the computer makes some noise, but still doesn't recognize that there's anything there. THEN IT JUST EJECTS IT! =/ do i need to take this into the store?

You can try to install a new drive yourself.  You can get a tutorial on how to replace the drive from ifixit.
    http://www.ifixit.com/
The Apple store will charge around $250 to replace it.  Mine does not recognize burned CD's most of the time, but I haven't wanted to pay that much to fix it.
You might want to try using a laser cleaning CD before spending money to repair or replace the drive.

  • Can I use USB external DVD Drive to boot up my G4?

My G4 (PCI Graphics) internal drive DVD-ROM is not working, its dead. I want to replace it with an External USB or Firewire Lacie DVD Drive.
According to Apple document http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58606, my computer cant boot up from Firewire devices. I think that means, I wont be able reinstall my Mac OS or install future systems or start my DiskWarrior from the CD. Using a external Firewire DVD Drive. Let me know if I am wrong?
Can I use a USB external DVD Drive to boot up?
    G4 (PCI Graphics) 400 mhz, 488Mb Memory, 50GB, 9.2.2 & 10.3.9. USB 1.0 & Firewire 400 Ports
    G4 (PCI Graphics)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi, Harold -
Bad news - your G4 (PCI) model can not boot to either a firewire drive nor to a USB drive.
Although the G4 (PCI) models do have native firewire, they (and their cousins the B&W G3) are specifically exempted from firewire booting; there is no workaround for this -
    Article #58606 - FireWire Booting
Relatedly, a G4 (PCI) machine can be the Host machine in a Firewire Target Disk Mode setup, but can not be the Target machine.
Article #58583 - Firewire Target Disk Mode
USB booting was introduced first on the G4 (AGP) model, and is not available on earlier Mac models -
Article #58430 - USB Info and Benefits of Dual-Channel USB
The only external drive your G4 (PCI) can be booted to is a SCSI drive - but that requires that the machine have an appropriate SCSI PCI card installed.
Replacing the internal optical drive might be the best choice, particularly for ease of maintenance and OS installing in the future.

  • Can I install Tiger without DVD drive?

    Hello all!
I need your advice and help!
Today I finally added more RAM to my iMac and proceeded to upgrade to OSX. I bought v10.4.3 Tiger at a retail location. Nothing happens after I inserted the installation DVD. Then I realised that I probably do not have a DVD drive! (I did look at the system requirement page and saw a slot loading iMac there ...)
Is there any way I could install Tiger? All your help is much appreciated!
    kris

First, have you installed the firmware update required for your model? You must boot directly into OS 9.1 or higher (but not OS X) to install the firmware update.
Secondly, your hard drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for Tiger.
If you open your Apple System Profiler it should tell you if you have a DVD drive. It was an option on your model, especially if you have the DV model.
If you don't have a DVD drive, then there are ways to install Tiger without one. One way is to exchange the DVD for a CD set from Apple. Visit the Apple OS X site to find the form needed for the exchange.
The following KB articles present alternatives for installing Tiger without a DVD:
    http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/6976
    http://www.applelinks.com/p5/index.php/more/osx_odyssey_752_how_to_installing_tiger_using_firewire_target_diskmode/
You can also use an external Firewire DVD drive provided it is a bootable drive.

    This question was solved.

    Hi:
That shouldn't be a problem at all.
Yes, you will also need to have an available sata power cable near where the drive will go, and a sata data cable of the appropriate length.

  • Can I use an external dvd drive to install windows?

Basically I have a licensed version of Windows Vista Business laying around, but it is on 5 CDs, and I can't seem to find a legal source to redownload it so I can burn it on a dvd to use my legal key. And I know in the bootcamp instructions it says it must be on one disk, due to newer macs not having an analog eject method, and the mac keyboard's eject button not working since this is before you can install the drivers.
One work around I have read is that you can run an eject.exe program from a flash drive via command prompt while installing, and this would eject the disk so you can put in the next one, but if it can read from a USB flash drive during the install process can it not also read from a USB dvd drive?

vLite http://www.vlite.net/about.html can merge the CDs to one DVD.
But it has to be done on a Windows PC.
Plus, be aware that with the newer 2011-released Macs Apple has abandoned XP and Vista support, so that Windows 7 is the only one supported.

  • Can we find my cd/dvd drive ?

This seems to be a common problem but many folks have small differences.
I have a dv6646us  upgraded from Vista  to a retail version of 7  a few months ago.
I just noticed a month ago that the cd/dvd drive is gone.  I dont know if it was because of 7 or something else that happened.
I've tried all the microsoft fixes..(removing upper and lower filters etc.)
no itunes but I do have norton antivirus
device manager does not show the drive at all
    on start up - F10
    in boot order
I see  CD/DVD ROM Drive listed..so does that mean that Bios is seeing it ?  I dont know what a bios is...
any help is appreciated.. I cant afford a new laptop.

I have the same issue (dv9810us, vista), and have pretty much given up trying to find a solution after trying the numerous tips and fixes found here, at microsoft, and all around the web.  I performed a system recovery today; everything went fine, but the dvd/cd player was still not there.  Tomorrow I will go buy an external dvd writer, and when this computer finally dies, my next notebook will probably be a toshiba.
If you go the external dvd route, the usb only drives are less expensive, usually, but they are also slower than drives with power adapters.
    Good luck

  • Where can I buy a replacement DVD drive for a mac mini A1347

My mac mini is out of warranty and my toddler stuffed several discs into the drive slot.
Whenever it booted, it made a horrible ratcheting clicking noise, but couldn't eject anything.
I disassembled the entire computer, and pulled all 3 discs out with pliers. After reassembling, the computer works fine, but the DVD drive won't "catch" a disc and pull it in. I'm pretty sure some gear or something has been irreparably damaged, or that I bent it as I was pulling the disc out.
I've been having a difficult time trying to find a replacement drive to order anywhere.
Besides going with an external USB drive, does anyone know of the cheapest option for a replacement slot drive for the mac mini A1347. (AKA "mid 2010", AKA Core 2 Duo DDR3).
I don't want to haul it down to an Apple Store and pay a huge premium to have them diagnose and replace a part that I'm very capable of doing myself.
    -John

If your in the US then the ifixit link is a good option, in the UK the following is an option
    http://www.applemacparts.co.uk/store/mac-mini-intel-mid-2010-a1347-core-duo-c-76 85_8044_9197_9198.html?filter_id=1371&sort=1a
However when I had to replace a drive in a Mac mini, I bought a bare drive off eBay.

  • How can I determine what internal DVD drives are compatible w/ my G5?

I'd like to put a new DVD drive in my G5. It's one of the original 1.8 dual machines, with some extra RAM. I'm having trouble with the drive these days, and I'd like to figure out what drives are compatible. Thoughts?

I cannot speak for all drives but today I installed a Pioneer 710 ( same drive as 111 ) in place of the original Pioneer 106.
I have only tested it with Toast to burn a DVD-R and playing a CD and all is well.
