Can I keep my iMac running at all the times?

I have iMac, early 2009 version and in good condition. I would like to know, whether I can keep the machine ON at all the times ( 7 * 24hrs) or should I switch it off every night? So far, I am switching it off every night and switch it on the next morning. Please clarify me.

In talking with a tech guy at Applecare, I was told to shut the iMac down--all the way down--every so often. I'd been using "sleep" for months and months, but this chap said the processor is running at about 10% capacity in sleep mode. It was then accumulating signals, loading up the RAM, and slowing down the computer. If you shut down the computer from time to time--stopping the processor completely--the accumulated "noise" is erased, and the computer will run faster as a result.
I've used a lot of vague language here. I'm not sure exactly what happens when you use sleep mode for extended periods, but in following the tech's advice, my mac is running fast and smoothly.
So I'd say, DON'T keep your machine running forever.
FWIW.

  • How can I keep a network drive mounted all the time?

I have a Mac Mini hooked to my TV which is running Boxee. All of the videos/music is pulled from a network drive.
I have the drive set up to mount on Mac boot by putting it in my start up items. The problem I am running into is sometimes the drive will go offline or I may have to reboot it for one reason or another. When this happens the Mac Mini looses the mounted drive and I have to reboot the computer.
What I need is some kind of application that sits in the background and constantly checks to see if the drive is mounted and if it is not it mounts it again for me like it does on start up.
    Any Ideas???

Cron isn't used by OS X anymore, launchd handles scheduled tasks now, but you could still use cron if you wanted to schedule a task. This is a good place to start: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=2001020700163714
You can definitely set up a launchd daemon, but it might be pretty complicated if you've never done it, it also may be more than you want to invest in this particular issue. Read about it here:
    http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPSystem Startup/Articles/LaunchOnDemandDaemons.html
I've also seen people recommend just setting an event to repeat in iCal. For the event, add an alarm, and as the alarm, tell it to run a script. Have the event repeat as often as you like, indefinitely. That, my friend, is a poor man's scheduled task solution.

  • Does my library computer have to be running iTunes all the time?

I was able to get home sharing set up, but unless I keep iTunes running on the computer my library is on, the other computer can't see the shared library.  Any way around this, as I really don't feel like keeping iTunes running on my machine all the time?

I'm with Limnos. In my experience, iTunes has to be running on the computer you're trying to share from. (It's okay if it's minimised, so long as it's on.)

  • Keeping external docking stations connected all the time?

I would like to connect a couple hard drive docking stations to a new iMac so I can easily swap out different bare hard drives. Are there any issues or reasons to not keep two docking stations connected via FW or TB connected all the time?
    Thanks.

Should be no problem, just remember to Eject the Disks in the Finder before removing from the Dock.

I bought a new Apple I bought a Mac Pro Retina screen, since I got it keeps crashing ALL the time!!!  This is my first Mac computer and I am hating it!!!  I assume I can take down to the any store and they will replace it??

I have a similar problem, my MBP Retina 15" 6 weeks old crashes and locks-up all the time with just about every application.  I now have gone back to using my old MS XP system, it is much more stable than Mountain Lion OS and Apple hardware.  I use Window-7 at work for last 6 months, not a single crash and/or lock-up.  I'm looking at returning/selling my MBP and getting a Window-8 system, Apple is now building crap hardware and software.  I recommend you consider the same solution.  Good Luck !

  • Why Lightroom keeps using 30% CPU power all the time?

    Hello all,
I am relatively new to LIghtRoom.
I started working on a new set of photos  (400 app.). I opened it as new directory.
Since then, all the time I work on theses pictures Lightroom keeps using app. 30% of CPU time.
The over all time I spent on these photos is estimated to be more then 30 hours (yes, I am slow and open each in Photoshop while Lightroom is still opened). So I guess Lightroom finished all the rendering it wished to do.
My question is why and what it keeps calculating and is there a way to stop it?
    System configuration:
Single core Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 3.6 GHz (Hyper Threading allowed)
    2 GB RAM
NVidia 6600 based graphics card (256 MB)
Both LightRoom 2.3 and PhotoShop CS4 are opened
Please help - the system is slow anyway. It can realy use those extra CPU power.

The warning badge can be switched off from within View Options panel (Library module View menu) by unchecking  the option labelled Unsaved Metadata.
With regard to your question as to whether Lr edits will show in Photoshop and Bridge/ACR - you'll be fine with Photoshop. However, for Lr edits to be visible in Bridge/ACR you will now have to manually save the metadata to each file (i.e. select file(s) then hit Cmd/Ctrl+S to save metadata to file).

  • I reset SMC and now fan is running high all the time

I reset the SMC after finding info on here about the built-in iSight not working. Once it came back up the iSight is working, but the fan is on high all the time. I'm not sure what to do with this. History prior to resetting SMC: I hadn't used the camera since the hard-drive was replaced in October. However, my kids have used it to video chat via stickam with no problems yet iChat and Photo Booth wouldn't recognize the internal camera (System Profiler could see the camera). So I tried the fix I found on here - resetting the SMC. It fixed iSight but now the fan is on high all the time. Any thoughts on what I should do next?
If you need more info on the iMac - I can supply that later as I am away from that computer at the moment. Here is what I do know - 20" white iMac

Hi, an SMC reset is one of the things usually recommended as a possible fix for loud fans, not the cause. There are a few troubleshooting steps to take, but you'd be better off posting in the Intel iMac Forum. You are in the iMac G5 Forum. You have a newer computer. They'll try to help you over there.
EDIT I'm basing this on your SMC reset, which would indicate an Intel Mac. Sure it wasn't a PMU reset?

  • Why Mail on Mavericks keeps Writing changes to disc all the time?

I have updated my MacBook Pro (early 2011) to Mavericks and now my IMAP Gmail account on Mail is having a huge endless "Writing changes to disc" on +/- sometimes with up to 50.000 messages, almost freezing my computer all the time! My Inbox, only has aprox 50 messages, I always move mesages to other folders!
Everything just worked fine on Mountain Lion and now my Mac is very slow because of this. Only if I close Mail than I have my Mac back... but I need to work with Mail open, so thats not an option.

I have the same problem.  Since installing Mavericks I have a major issue with Apple Mail drastically slowing my whole system down.  As others have mentioned, basically Mail takes over the computer and I find myself looking at spinning beach balls for minutes at a time.
From watching the Mail "Activity Window" (accessible from the "Window" menu item), I have discovered that several times a day it starts "Writing changes to disk" (see screenshot) for no apparent reason (it's not as if I have shifted any mailboxes); and that's the time when everything comes to a shuddering halt.  It takes a long time, about half an hour or so, to rewrite 27,000 messages (or some other ginormous number, it varies) to disk, and during that time I'm held up.   This problem never arose with Mountain Lion.
Basically it seems to me that Mail has been messed up in Mavericks, and Apple needs to fix it.
It was suggested to me by the Apple "Support Advisor" that the fault may lie with Gmail, due to some changes Google have made.  But that sounds like it's a cop-out and anyway it's no excuse.  Here are two of the biggest companies in the world who are constantly talking with each other about many things.  If it's true (unlikely) Apple should be able to communicate with Gmail and get it sorted.

  • Keeping iMac G5 on all the time.

    Hi everyone,
New to the G5 iMac world, but not new to Mac. Do you think that leaving the computer on withe sleep setting off is a bad thing? I have some apps that don't like sleep mode, as I end up having to reload them and what not. I suppose if there was no other way I could deal with it. So Yes or No. Is it harming the machine, causing excess wear? Also, I do have the display set to turn off.
    Tyler

Erik, I have read that the Cron tasks are suppose to run like you said with 10.4.6. I did not have any issues except the network that I know of. I did install i-Life06 from the dvd and the network was restored to high speed for one week, then slowed to a crawl again. Not sure why installing i-Life fixed the network.... Running OnyX fixes the issue. I ran the daily, weekly, and monthly tasks separately to see if I notice any difference after each was run. The daily and monthly tasks had no noticeable effect but the weekly task does fix my network issue. Also my isp has speed tests so I know the problem is in the computer as up and down speeds are good when the network is slow. As long as I can repair the issue this way I am happy! Thanks for the info, Steve

  • Ipod mini keeps turning on  and off all the time. Help

I got this ipod mini in may, it worked great, but then all of a sudden it started to turn on and off once in a while mostly now it happens once a day..i checked if maybe the timer was set but it wasnt at all, can i fix it by myself or do i have to send it back to the factory for the warranty repair.

the same thing is happening to my ipod mini, I received a brand new mini in July, and every time I use it it shuts on and off whenever I touch it, even with a fully charged battery, and it also shows the battery sign, do i need to get it serviced?

  • After Mavericks Install, MBP runs hot all the time

Im sure this has been said all over the community but I have to add my two cents. My 2011 MBP was perfect on Mtn Lion. I started the update which failed on install, which I then had to wipe the HD and do a fresh install. My time machine backup wouldnt even restore, that was a fun night let me tell you. Anyways, ever since I installed Mavericks, not only do I have the service battery issue everyone else has but now even running firefox or watching a movie will make the laptop run super hot and the fans start going. Ive even had the MBP shut itself down twice b/c of the overheating. Example: I almost couldnt even get time machine to make a new first time backup b/c the laptop starting running hot during the backup and it shut itself down. The second attempt worked but it sure seemed like it was on the verge of shutting down again. I just tried resetting the SMC but I dont think it did anything if you want my honest opinion.
I hope apple is listening and realizes what mess mavericks is making of our older macbooks.

I did do the verify/repair disk, and there is nothing wrong with the disk. Havent had a chance yet to boot in safe mode. Will post an update shortly but in the meantime:

  • G505s running hot all the time

So I have my G505s (still under warranty thank god) and has been running fine but now it seems that the fan isn't running anywhere near the percentage it should be. I have run energy management fan cleaning, bios is updated, AMD overdrive is downloaded... but it is physically hot and the fan does not change rates of speed. Yes, the power management setting is set at active... I am not even running anything and it is running hot.
Is there a driver or patch that alters the temperature protocols? Because if the fan can run faster, but isn't even when it is hot.... then it isn't serving the purpose.
Lenono please help me... and the fact this is a consistent problem isn't prompting me for reccomendations. If this continues I will be getting the laptop serviced under warranty or replaced because this is ridiculous.
I do run windows classic shell, but that has not been a problem yet.

    hi reedbarnes,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Just to check, when you open AMD Overdrive, what are the values on the CPU frequency and temps?
      - Sample image
In addition,is the system running on BIOS v3.00? Looking at the BIOS 3.00 - Summary of changes, this should fix the fan duty if you're getting CPU temps. between 50-90°C.
If you have the BIOS to v3.00 and you're getting high temps (eg. 60°C++) after logging into Windows and there are no startup apps / processes running on the background that's eating up high CPU resources then it's likely that the fan may need to be replaced (or the thermal paste and heatsink as it's not properly conducting the heat out of the APU). In this case, you may need to contact lenovo and report the issue as you may need to send the unit for service.

  • New MBP seems to run hot & fan runs almost all the time

I've had my MBP for just about a week now. It's the new, 15", 2.2 GHz model. It's great, but I notice that it runs hotter than my Powerbook G4 did and the fan is almost always on. It's presently sitting on a wooden topped table. My house is not AC-ed, but the air temp is about 70 F/21 C today. Seems to run hot in my AC-ed faculty office too, when I am there. What is "normal" for this machine. TIA.

    David,
Ditto what Ned says. To be sure, 80 C is not too hot (it is the temp that the MBP is designed to maintain as a working maximum), but that you are experiencing this temp at all times indicates that something is pushing the processor at all times.
That is not normal. As has been suggested, have a look at Activity Monitor. If you are not doing anything of any consequence at the time, your CPU usage should be very, very low, and processes that you see using CPU intermittently (there will be many of these processes) should only use a small percentage when they use any at all.
