Can I keep WIFI permanently "ON" in Lion?

I switch back and forth a lot between wired connection at my desk and wifi when in a conf room. Everytime I disconnect the cable, I have to turn on WIFI from the top menu bar.
On my Windows PC's, I've always been able to leave WIFI "permanently on", so when I disconnect the wire, wifi kicks in automatically (yeah I do have to do the VPN connection at work, but at home ought to be a seamless experience)
Isn't there some way to setup my MBP to behave like this?
I'm a recent returnee to MAC after several years "off" using Windows. Sorry if this is a repeat - I'll be happy if you point me to any relevant older threads.

I never have this problem. I use Ethernet at work, and WiFi everywhere else, so I do not understand why you need to do anything specal for your WiFi.
However, since you do switch between network setups, you might look into ControlPlane which can be very useful for changing network locations and each network location can have different network interfaces enabled and configured.

I am fimilar with changing the setting for all network partitions(defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true), but that is undesirable when I connect my laptop to my home network. A preferable solution would be where I could control the writing of these files based on disk format (NTFS vs HFS+).

Go to MacUpdate or CNET Downloads and search for ds_store. There are numerous utilities for preventing them from being transferred to Windows systems.

go to itunes preferences, store, uncheck automatic downloads. also when your phone is connected you can click on apps and only check the ones you want on your phone, go down to the bottom right and click apply.

Wifi goes on and off, backlit keyboard doesn't work and no sound since Lion upgrade. I can get the wifi back by going into safe mode and re booting(someone suggested on here), but can't let computer die or turn off or have to do it again.

Take it to an Apple store or AASP. How much it will cost will depend on their determination of the problems. To bad you didn't purchase extended AppleCare. No you don't get your money back for purchasing Lion.

If you keep the entire iTunes folder as it was and you're still using the same platform, you'll be able to keep all your playlist and metadata.

Well, iTunes will only transfer content from the computer to your iPod. However, there's some ways to get around this. Read this carefully:

As long as it's been fully downloaded then you shouldn't need to be online in order to watch it.
As to how long you have to watch it, from here :
You have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and 24 hours (in the US) or 48 hours (elsewhere) after you've started viewing to finish it. Once the rental period expires, the movie will disappear from your iTunes library.

I have been on the phone for Apple since 5:30 Eastern Time today. We are still on the phone with them. It is 10:14 PM. We are going to get a new phone because the ios6 has major problems! The wifi connectivity is a serious problem. Apple is aware of it. More people need to do something about it. I am willing to start a class action suit against them. I have means to an attorney pro bono. If you are having problems using your iphone 4 or 4s with wifi and ios6...I suggest you spend time calling a senior advisor and get a new phone sent to you. They know they messed up but they can't fix it.

Help is here to resolve this issue with your wifi connection 88DaveS. Lets try disabling your "Smart Network Switch". Select Settings> Wifi. The 'smart network switch' is in the advanced settings. Locate the Menu icon in the upper right hand corner > Tap Menu > Tap Advanced > Locate and ensure the check box is Unchecked next to Smart network switch. Let us know if this helps.

You probably know that mobilme goes away in June this year. There are two ways to access your mail account on iCloud, either through Lion or via the web. Web access won't get you to all the benefits of iCloud but will allow you to get to Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Find My iPhone. See this FAQ: http://www.apple.com/mobileme/transition.html
If you decide to go with Lion, the maximum memory you can install is 4GB, however the system will only use 3GB, which is enough to run Lion. I can find access points, but can't keep a connection. Is there a step by step I could follow? I don't have much with this type of setup.

yes - each phone its it own entity (both standalone, and if you're syncing to itunes).
Bear in mind though that all purchases/free downloads of apps, music, etc will be tied to the same account - so I would switch out the 'automatic download' function under 'settings / store' on the iPhones (its off by default).
The biggest issue really is making sure you setup the sync correctly (so there are something you may want to share (new music etc) but want to keep the app layout separate)
