Can I lend an iBook?

OK, i've bought and read my book.  Now, I want to share it with my son, either by loaning it to him or gigging it to him.  But, I find the good folks at Apple are a little short sighted on the subject.  This is apparently a no-no.  In my opinion, that pretty much tips the scale against electronic publishing.  After all, if I bought the physical book, I'd be able to give it to him ... There is still only one copy after all.  There will have to be equality on this topic, or I won't purchase electronic forms of a book ... Or the price of a book will have to be much lower than it is today!  I pay as much for an electronic book as I did for a paperback book.  If there is a future in electronic publishing, there has to be more than physical convenience.  For example, there should be two types of purchase...one completely analogue to buying a hard cover or paperback, you own it and can keep it, trash it, resell it, give it away, or loan it out.  No two copies of that single purchase exist at any time, so the behavior is exactly like it is with thy physical book.  Another might be a one-time purchase, at a much lower price, say 25% of retail for two weeks use.  I also see electronic lending libraries wherein they have one or more copies of a book that can be borrowed or rented for a period of time, during which they are NOT available to be lent to another subscriber.
Why is this not already in place.  Two reasons really, neither of them having anything to do with technology.  First, paranoia ... On the part of authors and publishers.  That and GREED, pure and simple.  They want more money for less value, a totally unacceptable concept in a proper free market.  They see an opportunity to do something for more money with electronic publishing than can be done today with physical books, control our behavior, and squeeze more revenue out of every book.  I guess multimillions isn't enough these days, when there is an opportunity to eel out many times more than that with this new technology.  You want proof?  I'll give you proof.  Check out the Barnes &Noble reader.  They have enabled a one-time lending of a book for 14 days, using "DRM" ... The only catch is this capability can be authorized, title-by-title by the author, and if you check, most authors have chosen NOT to enable lending of their books even once.  Greedy bastards that they are.
Recently, there has been a lot of hoopla about iCloud.  From what I can tell, this affords us the perfect opportunity for Apple to show it's true colors; do they really care about the long term relationship with their customers?  If,so, go back to publishers and use Apple's incredible clout to do the right thing.  It's still a goldmine for Apple and for publishers, and does not further constrict users and book owners rights.
What say you, Apple??????

I agree with you ... to a point.  But Apple is part of the equation as are consumers.  If we simply buy them as offered, and Apple simply sells them according to the dictates of the publishers without negotiation, then the bottom line will be that electronic publishing will be a boom for authors and publishers and a huge constraint on the rights of consumers and a quite different scenario than exists today with printed materials.
Suppose you owned a printed book and went to loan it to a friend or relative, but the publisher swooped in to prevent you from doing so because you have no rights to gift or lend that book.  You only options are to keep it or destroy it.  Or, in a more extreme example, what if publishers prevented libraries from lending books?
My question, consumers:  Are we willing to give up our rights of ownership for books we purchase for the convenience of reading them on our iPad or Kindle?  Really?

  • Why can't I read iBooks on my Mac?

The user unfriendly way of selling ebooks is very disapointing!
I can not read them on my computer, only on my iPad.
I can not lend them to my daughter, as I would do with any other form of book.
no way I am going to buy anymore books this way!

Because Apple has chosen not to make iBooks readable on the Mac.  As fellow users, we cannot speculate on why they have decided this.
However, you can still read books on your Mac.  The best approach is to download the Kindle app for Mac.  Then you can buy electronic books from Amazon, and read them on your Mac (or iPad).

  • Can't print from iBook G4 via Windows XP to an HP PSC 1410

    Hello,
I realize this question is very similar to others on this discussion but I haven't been able to find an answer to my problem.
I cannot print from my iBook via XP to an HP PSC 1410.
I can print from my iBook via XP to an HP LaserJet 4L.
I was able to print from my iBook via XP to an HP882C that was connected
to the same USB port that the HP PSC 1410 is connected to now.
    I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.3
I have a PC running XP with an HP LaserJet 4L on a parallel port and an HP PSC 1410 on a USB port.
I installed the following from http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/
    hpijs-foomatic-2.02.ppc.dmg
    espgs-7.07.1.ppc.dmg
    HP-PSC_1400-hpijs.ppd
I think I correctly followed the instructions at:
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3015.html
They worked for the LaserJet printer.
When I attempt to print from the iBook to the 1410 the HP doesn't print at all.
I don't see any error messages on the iBook. The document gets spooled onto the Windows print spooler, the printer even starts making noises, the print heads move about a bit and then stop. The print job just sits there in the queue with a status of "Printing". The print job is then stuck and hard to delete.
I don't need to be able to scan or check ink levels from the iBook.
I would just like to be able to do color printing.
What else should I try? Given the symptoms where might I be going wrong?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi all,
I finally figured out what the issue was, Why it fixes it I can not say,
    but it does.
On the Shared printer on the Windows side, go to the properties of the Printer.
Go to the Ports tab, and deselect the "Enable bidirectional Support" (do not
have it checked). Once this is done and you also do not have any firewalls
setup on the Windows machine (Windows, MCAfee, Norton, ....). You should be
    able to print.
Finally!!!!! I hope this helps many many people. As I have had many
people asking for the solution if I found it.
    Thanks,
    Steven Stuart

I am confused about something.  How do I read a book on my MacBook Pro?  I can't find the iBook app anywhere, which is what I use on my iPad.  The book I want to read is in my iTunes but I can't click on it.  Some of my iBooks show up in my iTunes but they are "grayed" out.  The only books that respond in iTunes are audiobooks and that's not what I'm looking for.  Is this a stupid question?

Nevermind - I answered my own question, which is I CAN"T READ ANY BOOKS I purchased in iBooks on my MacBook Pro.  If I want to read on my mac I have to use Kindle or Nook.  Which means any book I've already purchased through iBooks has to be read on my iPad.  Kind of a drag because there are times when it's more convenient for me to read while I'm sitting with my Mac.

  • How can I get the iBook app on my Mac to backup ePubs I created with Pages on my iPad? Only seems to want to work with purchased from the ibook store.

How can I get the iBook app on my Mac to backup ePubs I created with Pages on my iPad? Only seems to want to work with purchased books from the ibook store. The problem is, once I create a document in Pages and turn it into an ePub to be opened in iBooks, I delete the document in Pages, because I don't need two copies taking up space on my iPad. Before Maverick, iTunes would backup everything in my iBook app on my iPad. If something ever happened to my iPad, all of my created ePubs would be lost and I would be screwed. I suppose I could keep everything on Pages and go to iCloud and download my documents to my Mac, but that is a lot of steps. I may have to do that if there is no other way, but I am hoping someone will have the answer for me. Pretty disappointed in iBooks app for Mac at this point.

iBooks only syncs purchased books. Others must be synced in iTunes.

  • How can i open my iBook on my Mac, not just on my iPhone

    Hi,
how can i open my iBook on my Mac, not just on my iPhone?  I ask this questions in hopes that I can eventually find a way to have the iPhone read a non "Enhanced" iBook to me.
I used the Accessibility reader for a brief time but it's very persinickety.  Move the phone a tiny bit and it threw me out from page 70 and back to page 48.  Changing pages when you are in Accessibility is excruciating. Now, I cannot get back there at all.
I downloaded 2 apps that claim they can read to me but the closest I can get in the instructions says I need to open the iBook from my Mac computer with my iPhone connected and then I will be able to open the iBook in the app called "Read text to me".  Only when I go to open the book on my Mac it says "This book can’t be viewed using this computer. You can view this book using iBooks on your iOS device."
Thank god, I only have a brain tumor and am not yet completely blind.
I've been to the Apple store twice, checked out a youtube page with all it's comments and I am still nowhere, over the course of a week.
    Can anybody help me?
    thank you,
    Ellen

    You cannot.
Ibooks are only for iphone/ipod touch/ipad
So, there are no third party readers/emulators in Mac OS X and Windows to read them from iTunes? I don't even own an iOS device. I just redeemed Action Comics' Superman #1 from Starbucks and iTunes.
    This one?
Where the REQUIREMENTS spell out that an iOS device is needed to read it?

  • How can i send an ibook to a friend?

How can I send an iBook to a friend?

The only way to share iBooks that you have purchased is via Family Sharing, which is not what I think you are aiming for:
    Family Sharing - Apple Support
You can "Gift" a book by going to the iBooks store, selecting the book, and in the dropdown next to the price, you can select to Gift it to someone.
To the best of my knowledge, these are the only two options.

  • How can I import an ibook file back into iBook Author?

I exported an ebook from iBook Author thinking it is the equivalent of saving the file.
I did not save the file, I only exported it and than exited the program.
    My active file is vannished.
I need to make some adjustments to the ebook, but can not bring it back up.
Is there a way that I can re-import the iBook file back into iBook Author?
When I open iBook Author and try to open the exported file the program does not recognise the ibook file...
    Thanks for your help!

Check for previous versions of that book in iBA....even if not saved.
You can dig into the .ibooks file by changing the suffix to zip, but you'll have to manually extract what you can from assets you find. Please only do this with your own books.

    Hi Joe,
There is no "upper limit" on the number of tasks that you can have in a plan. Having said that, the complexity of a plan -- including conditions and the use of external tasks -- can certainly be a factor in response times.
Having said this, 30 seconds seems like a long time and I strongly suggest that you open a case with customer care on this item.
We have alerted them to be looking for a case from you.

You don't need to store your iBooks in iCloud. iBooks can be re-downloaded at any time through the purchased section of the iBooks app.

I have not published anything, just previewed on my ipad but the file seems to be deleted from my imac which is what I was using ibooks author on. Any help is welcome!

It's not a 'process' at all.
If it was easy/straightforward, people would be turning store versions into iBA versions left/right and all **** would break loose. It's not and that's a good thing, sorry
Work up from whatever version you have.
Any work you value should be backed up....period. That backup should be used and tested regularly. Consider this a lesson learned, perhaps. Good luck in the future.

  • Can't open downloaded ibooks on iPad

Can't open downloaded ibooks on iPad Brooks i was reading some days ago.

You can't - ibooks from Apple can currently only be read in the iBooks app on an iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, Apple haven't so far made a Mac or PC reader for them
If you don't have one of those iOS devices, then though all purchases are considered final, you can try contacting iTunes support and see if they will refund or credit you : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
