Can I limit disk space for an account?

Hi
I have set up a non-admin account for my partner to use, but she is in the habit of saving lots of video files which is eating up my disk space. Is there any way I can set a limit to the disk space available to her account?
Cheers, Brett l-s

Yes. Mac OS X supports the notion of user quotas for disk space. Since you are asking the question, I can presume that you probably aren't familiar with the notion of a UNIX disk quota and will probably be a little disappointed that enabling it will require some mucking about in the UNIX shell using Terminal.app.
Namely, use 'edquota' to setup the quotas for various users, use 'quotaon' on turn on quotas, and 'repquota' and 'quotacheck' to report on the disk and user quota status. Pretty much like BSD UNIX.
Be forewarned, however, that Finder knows nothing about quotas -- it cannot tell a user that they have one, it can't tell how close they are to filling it up, and when it can't copy/write a file because a user's over their quota, it has no idea why it can't do it and just tells the user that "something" is wrong.

Can I move cache to external hard drive to save disk space for photoshop and bridge?

So could I take everything off my external hard drive, save it to my Mac, then re-format it for my Mac and move everything back to the external hard drive?
Yes. Keep in mind that you need to back up all data, including the data on an external drive. So if you're going to use the external drive to store original data, as opposed to backups, then you really need another one to back up the first one. You also need to back up the data on your internal drive, of course. This isn't optional. You must do it, or you'll lose everything sooner or later. All disk drives fail eventually, often with no warning.
If I do that how do I format the external hard drive for my Mac?
Launch the Disk Utility application and search the built-in help for "erase."
Would it be easier to just buy a external hard drive that is for a Mac?
All external hard drives work with Macs. Some might come pre-formatted for use with Macs, but it only takes a few minutes to do that yourself.

Is there a way to dedicate the available disk space for ASM in order to create a database under ASM?
I was hoping that I would not have to reinstall the Linux OS Enterprise 5 (Red Hat). So I de-installed my 2-node RAC environment, installed the ASM required RPMs for Red Hat linux Enterperise 5 and then proceeded to reinstall 11g Clusterware and set "Configure Automatic Storage Management (ASM)".
    Did I miss something? THanks

  • How to get available disk space for a disk in the system ?

    hi all,
I need to figure out the available disk space for a particular disk before I can write my file to a directory in the disk. I do this to avoid unsufficient disk space problem in my program. May I know how can I do this in Java ? I look at the API function for java.io.File class but there isn't any function to check disk space. I would appreciate any help from fellow Java developers. Thanks a million.
    regards,
    tuck meng

You cannot do this in purely platform independent way.
You can use System.exec to run native OS utilities like df and parse the output, but then you have to knwo which platform your program is running on, or build in some automatic detection of OS and have corresponding native calls for each likely one.
BTW. even if you get a number of free bytes on disk that's larger than the size of the file you want to write this is no guarantee that there will be enough diskspace for your file, because another process might write to the disk in the meantime. So you will have to do proper error handling and recover gracefully from the disk full sitution no matter what.

Trying to make a bare metal backup of a phyiscal server running 2008 R2 SP1 . I've checked im not out of space. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the agent, I've manually tried to make the disk allocation larger same error.
DPM is out of disk space for the replica. (ID 58 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FF)
This is in the event log on the Client machine

    the issue is resolved.
I have several other machines doing bare metal backups they are virtual but I can't see why that would be any different. They have no problems doing this. I have seen hacks on the internet editing xml files to get this to work changing allcritical to "C:".
I'd like an actual fix for this please?

Mike quick question. How can I determine which share my particular server is using to backup to? Here is what I get when I try to do a DIR on the folder as system
    C:\Windows\system32>whoami
    nt authority\system
    C:\Windows\system32>dir

    \\kdnap-util1\12068c1992634c92addf44bfbee5cada
    Access is denied.
I was just trying to poke around to browse the folder to see which one to back it up to . But with the access denied error this isn't helpful :)
Here is my list of shares
    C:\Windows\system32>net view \\kdnap-util1
    Shared resources at \\kdnap-util1
I also tried doing a DIR from a server that is backing up correctly on any of those shares listed above after running psexec and I get access denied from them as well so I guess thats normal

  • "Insufficient disk space for encoding" There is!!!!

    Hi,
I've got a problem that is really driving me crazy.
When ever I write an .img or even burn to disk, the following comes up:
"Insufficient disk space for encoding. Please free up disk space on your encoding target drive"
This is untrue. I have 6.95 GB left on my hard drive, plenty on my LaCie drives and enough on my DVD-R. I really don't know what the problem is. I've written DVDs with less than 6.95 GB before.
    Can anyone help?
    Many Thanks,
    Pete Cooke

That's not enough, when your hard drive gets about 80% full, then you may begin to see this issue. There is alot of files that are temporary, that also use disk space during the build process.
You really need alot more space than what you currently have left, (like 20GB) or more.
Look, I know that some here are on a shoe string budget, but the prices that ATA firewire drives are at now, there cheep. I just saw one on deal-mac.com, (250GB ATA, internal) for $80.00 and a 160GB for $40.00. You could replace your current firewire drive, for not much.
I know, you don't want to open the external firewire drive inclosure, that's ok, I also have a solution for that. It's a one time expense, but get a firewire bridge, like the one Wiebetech.com sells for $120.00 and from then on, you can just purchase raw internal HD's on sale as the need arises and plug those drives in via the 6pin firewire bridge from Wiebetech. This has saved me allot cash on purchasing the fire interface over and over, (as you have to do when purchasing an external firewire drive.)
I just move the Wiebetech drive dock firewire bridge from drive to drive as needed, I now have 4 of them. It also allows me to quickly archive off footage to an ATA drive quickly, as well as use that footage from that drive while authoring a DVD or FCP project.
I have looked at other solution like this, but this seems to be the lowest cost per GB & buck, ($.)

  • Disk space for program file

    Hi,
Wondering if any body has experienced with this. The disk space for program file(not data base file) is full and I want to know what are my options to free some space? Please include tcodes......

    Latha,
You can follow the note and you will be able to schedule few background jobs for this. If you need to delete files at operating system level (Windows/Unix) then you can simply use delete or rm operating system commands.
You may want to move/compress few files if you think you may need in the future for some analysis purpose. I am attaching one more note for standard reorgnization jobs.

  • Not Enough Disk Space for Rendering

I am trying to edit a QuickTime file that I exported out of iPhoto, which contains about one hour of a slide show. The QuickTime file is only 741 MB. All I wanted to do is add music and titles using FCP. So I created a new project, imported the QuickTime file into FCP and inserted the entire one hour clip to sequence. When I rendered the sequence, FCP not only indicated it would take 4 hours to render but also said there is no enough disk space available to complete the rendering. I have about 60GB space left in my hard drive. How could the 741MB file take up more than 60GB of disk space for rendering? I haven't even put any video effects or music on the sequence yet. Can anyone tell me what's going on? Can I simply edit the 741MB file without changing the file size?

Why not add the music and titles in iPhoto? The music is easy(just set up an iTunes playlist) If you need title slides just create them in an image editor(you could even use Textedit), save as a jpeg, import to iPhoto and incorporate them into the show.
Thanks for your suggestion, but I'm not interested in using iPhoto to add the music and titles when I can use FCP to easily create better effects.
If you then export the slideshow as a Quicktime movie then you can just pull it into iDVD. But if DVD is the intended end format your QT export needs to be 1024 or 720 x 576(thats for PAL TV) depending on the aspect ratio you're going for. I'd export it as DV.
I've used the iDVD slideshow function before. I was frustrated by the limitation the function offers. I just wanted to simply edit the QuickTime movie I exported from iPhoto using FCP. I don't know why it's so hard and no one can seems to assist me. Any suggestion would be appreciated, though. Thanks.

  • Insufficient disk space for render. What does this mean?

In Final Cut Express, I received this message.  Insufficient disk space for render. Please free up space & retry. Does this mean not enough space on the finished project? Is my project too long? How can I free up space?

If you haven't done so already, you can empty your Trash bin on your dock.  But, you do not have enough disk space on the target drive  to save your project.  You'll need to delete files to free up space or save it to another drive.

  • Insufficient disk space for rendering - about to kill myself

I have two clips on my timeline. Quicktime clips. I just want to render them. It says I have insufficient disk space for rendering, try cleaning out files and trying again. I deleted everything in my render files, everything in the final cut pro documents. My hard drive has 199 GB of free space. Together in total these clips are under 4 minutes. Why in the name of all that is holy is 200 GB of space not enough for rendering? If you can answer that or tell me what to do, I'll give you my first born child.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Without full system info (computer, OS, FCE and QT versions, external devices, etc. along with specifics of the QuickTime clips), this is just guesswork. Is there another hard drive involved? Could your FCE System Settings have your render files going to a drive that's almost full?

If you can't free up enough space by deleting items, get an external hard drive and move the files there. An absolute minimum of 25 GB is required by iDVD.

Sounds like your hard drive is getting full. You need as much space on your drive as you can get - at least as much as the disc contents, twice. If you are burning a DVD-R at 4.7Gb then allow ten Gb free space before you start.

  • How to change disk space for encoding assets to external disk drive

My laptop has only 1G left and I can't seem to burn a video with iDVD 6. An error message says: "Not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets."
How can I use my external hard drive, where my project is being stored, instead for encoding the remaining assets?

1GB left? Wow - I'm surprised you aren't having trouble with the OS!
Normally, OS-X likes at least 10% of your hard drive kept free for OS use.
You REALLY need to fee up hard disk space before you have major problems.
As for: > How can I use my external hard drive, where my project is being stored, instead for encoding the remaining assets?
As far as I know, you can't.

  • PLEASE HELP!  Not enough disk space for encoding...

    Hello,
I have set up my dvd project and am ready to burn, but when I insert a CD, it says "Not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets." How do I create enough space...where do I go to delete things? I'm not completely computer illiterate so if someone can give me a few steps to fix this problem, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
Also, what is better for home video burning? dvd+r or dvd-r?
    THANKS SO MUCH!

Hello, and Welcome to the Discussions,
+am ready to burn, but when I insert a CD,+
First, if you are burning an iDVD project, you need to be inserting a blank DVD disk, not a CD disk. Be sure to use a recommended brand of DVD disk, such as Verbatim or Maxell. I find that DVD-R disks work well in most set-top DVD players.
+Not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets+
How long in minutes is your project? If you have created a movie or slideshow that is over 60 minutes, you have to change the settings for iDVD to encode properly.
Look at iDVD's Preferences. It is found under the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, under iDVD.
Click on it and a window will pop up. Click on the Projects icon and look at the Encoding drop-down bar. If it is set to 'Best Performance' which is the default setting, you need to change it to either 'High Quality' or 'Professional Quality' to burn a DVD of more than 60 minutes of content.
Post back if you have further questions.
