Can I limit my family sharing purchases?

I have set up family sharing but I would like to limit what my kids can purchase on the account.  Is there a way to do this?

Hi Plastic Paul,
If you would like to limit or manage what your children purchase within Family Sharing, you may want to look into enabling the Ask to Buy feature on their accounts. You may find the following article helpful:
Request and make purchases with Ask to Buy
You may also want to take a look at the options available in the Restrictions settings on their individual devices (such as setting a ratings limit), as outlined in this article:
iOS: Understanding Restrictions (parental controls)

  • Can I set up family sharing for the calendar without paying for everyone's purchases?

I would like to set up family sharing so we can share a calendar, see each other's location, etc. but I don't want to pay for everyone's purchases.  Can we set up family sharing without that feature?

When you added the card, did it take a number of goes to get it accepted ? Each time that you add or change your credit card details on your account a small temporary store holding charge (i.e. $1) may be applied to check that the card details are correct and valid and that it's registered to exactly the same name and address as on your iTunes account - your card issuer should remove it from your card within a few days or so.

  • Can i see Family Shared purchases in iTunes on my Mac?

I'm ones of those people who had a separate Apple ID for iTunes purchases and another for iCloud.
I have successfully set up Family share on my iPhone to allow me to use my iCloud Apple ID in the iTunes store and still access my purchases from the old iTunes-only Apple ID.
Now in the iTunes app on my iPhone, I can see TV shows purchased with the older account when I'm signed in with my Family Share iCloud Apple ID, however I can't seem to figure out how to do this on the desktop version of iTunes.
Is there a way to view all Family shared purchases in iTunes on the desktop?
    thanks

If they were purchased from iTunes then connect the phone to your Mac's iTunes and the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases should copy them over. If they came from other sources (e.g. copied from CDs) then you will need a third-party program on your Mac to copy them back - there are some listed half-way down this page : Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
If by 'missing' you mean that you have them listed in the Music part of your iTunes library but get the 'would you like to locate' message when trying to play them then you will need to delete them from there for the Transfer Purchases to work - otherwise that will see those entries in your library and assume that you still have them somewhere and not copy them back.

Can I use paypal for family sharing purchases?

    Hi muchjk,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
No, the family organizer cannot use a PayPal account for the payment method. The article below provides more information about Family Sharing and supported forms of payment with the iTunes Store.

  • I have an apple id with verizon and @me and i can't set up family sharing

i need help setting up family sharing because i have two apple id's  one with verizon and one @me.com  so i already purchased more storage on the cloud with verizon and when i signed in on the desktop to upload my library and set up homesharing i had to do another 9.99/mo plan because that computer only allows me to sign in with @me.com.  I've read that I can't combine them??  So how can I fix this?  Any easy solution?

    Howdy Denise,
It is not possible to combine Apple IDs. See this article -

You can set up Family Sharing using one of your Apple IDs by following the directions in this article -
    iCloud: Family Sharing
Note in particular that in order to set up Family Sharing you need a Mac computer running Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).

  • Family Sharing purchases inaccessible

There's 4 of us in the family.  The organiser has set things up correctly.
I can see all 4 family members in the iCloud configuration on my Macbook and also in my iPhone.
I was able to see the organisers movies on my AppleTV earlier this evening in the list under 'purchased' (i.e. Recent, All Films, Sharing : which then took you to the family members)
Now, however, I can only see my own purchases, but all family members are still showing in the configuration screens in iOS and on OSX. I'm able to view the organiser's purchased iOS apps (but not download as most aren't set to share), but am unable to see even the option to view other purchased content within iTunes.
I've tried downloading a free app
I've tried signing out of iCloud, itunes and logging out/restarting various devices.
Is there an issue with Family Sharing, or have we missed a configuration check somewhere?

I have the same problem here. Or at least I was last night. When my son tried to buy an app, instead of telling him he needed to ask permission, it said he needed to update his payment information and took him to his account where he was supposed to enter CC info. I tried this numerous times just to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong. Then I logged all of us out and back in to iCloud. Nothing changed.
I found another thread on this problem last night, but I am happy to see that Apple Support was able to recreate the issue. My question is, does anyone know if it's working today? I didn't have time to try it before leaving for work this morning.
    Thanks.

  • Can't join a Family Sharing setup.

I have a family member who set up a Family Sharing account, new with iOS 8. He invited myself and my brother.
It let my brother join in fine, but I am having problems trying to join the setup.
When I accept the invitation and get to the point where it says "Share your location with your Family", it gives me a popup that I could not join the family account.
It seems like I have reached a limit for switching accounts for Family Sharing, but I have not set it up before. It also doesn't show me the remaining days correctly.
This problem seems to be out of my control, and something on Apple's side that needs fixing. I have wiped the phone and signed in to iCloud from scratch, with the same problem.

  • Family Sharing Purchases No Prompt for Parents to Approve

My daugter is purchasing a free game on the app store on her iPad and it’s not prompting me to approve it and thus she’s unable to purchase anything.  I’ve hard rebooted both devices and my wife isn’t getting the prompt either.  iCloud and iTunes appears to be in order.  I’ve logged my daughter out of iTunes and back in with no change.

    Hello there, Lea.
When you've setup Family Sharing and want purchases approved with Ask to Buy, the following Knowledge Base article provides some great information on how to turn that feature on:
Family purchases and payments - Apple Support
Approving purchases with Ask to Buy
You can turn on Ask to Buy to require approval for purchases initiated by any family member who is under 18 years old.*
    iOS 8
Tap Settings > iCloud > Family, and tap your family member's name.
    Turn on Ask to Buy.
    OS X Yosemite
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
Click Manage Family and select your family member's name.
    Select Ask to Buy.
Ask to Buy is enabled by default for any children under 13 years old, and can be enabled during the setup process for any children 13-17 years old.* You can't turn on Ask to Buy for adults.
If you don't wish to be billed for purchases initiated by a specific adult family member, you can remove that family member from the family group.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Can't set up Family Sharing...requires new payment info

I have an Apple ID and it is fully set up to bill my PayPal account for iTunes and apps purchases. I just checked PayPal and my account is in good standing.
I tried to set up Family Sharing on the Mac. I did System Preferences->iCloud->Set Up Family->Continue->Continue->Continue.
I get the dialog "Add a payment method to enable Family Sharing. Family Sharing requires a valid payment method. Add a payment method to “[email protected]” in your iTunes account." If I click Add, it throws me into Safari and show that I have a PayPal account as my Payment Type.
So, I'm completely stuck since the iCloud panel keeps asking me to set up a payment method and I already have one. I even tried reconfiguring the PayPal account as the payment method.
Is this Apple being insidious and not accepting PayPal since they are a competition to Apple Pay?
When I look at System Preferences->iCloud->Account Details I see an expired MasterCard. How do I get rid of that???

    Hi Double E,
Family Sharing can only be set up from a Mac running Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) or an iOS device such as an iPhone running iOS 8. See this article for reference -
    Family Sharing - Apple Support
So you could set up the Family Sharing from your son's iPad using your Apple ID. See this article for how to sign in with a different Apple ID -
Sign in with a different Apple ID on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Note that the  Ask to Buy feature of Family Sharing requires the person approving purchases to be using either Yosemite or iOS 8. See this article -

  • Wrong apple ID for family sharing purchases

I use one email address for iCloud and one for iTunes purchases.
I have signed up to family sharing using my iTunes account, but when a family member requests approval for an app purchase, it defaults to my iCloud email address (the address is greyed out) and I cannot then approve the purchase.
    Any solutions gratefully received.

It should be Noted that anything Downloaded with a Particular Apple ID is tied to that Apple ID and Cannot be Merged or Transferred to a Different Apple ID.

  • Can I manage my Family Sharing and child's Apple ID from my windows computer?

I've bought a refurbished iPhone in lieu of new iPod touch for a kid. I've had an iPod classic for some years and have always managed my involvement with apple via iTunes on a windows laptop. I want to set up an "under 13" identity for her and start family sharing, but I've yet to find explicit instructions on exactly how to do this. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    This should answer:
From the family Sharing Page (Family Sharing - Apple Support):
"You can use Family Sharing on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8, your Mac with OS X Yosemite and iTunes 12, or your PC with iCloud for Windows 4.0. To get started, one adult in your household—the family organizer—sets up Family Sharing"
"iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite are required to set up or join a Family Sharing group and are recommended for full functionality."
To set it up, go to your iCloud Settings on the iOS 8 device.
So basically, you can't manage it from your PC; from your PC, you can only access the shared iTunes content and other iCloud shared stuff such as photos, calendar etc.

  • Family sharing purchased app fails to download (repeatedly)

I'm having trouble with iTunes app purchases with family sharing.
Child #1 purchased an app (a few weeks ago)--not a free app.
Parent (sponsoring user) purchased another app (a couple of years ago)--not a free app.
Both apps support family sharing, according to the itunes store listing.
Child #2 with iTunes 11.4, Mac OS X 10.6.8, trying to download either app, gets the same behavior.
    Click on the purchase button.
Dialog: "Are you sure you want to buy and download "App name here" ?  Your credit card will be charged for this purchase and your app will begin to download immediately.  (unchecked box) Don't ask me about buying iOS apps again.  (cancel) (buy)"
    click "buy"
Next dialog: "A family member has already bought this item.  A family member has already purchased this item.  To download it again for free, select OK.  (cancel) (ok)"
    click "OK"
Next dialog: "Could not purchase "App name here".  The iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable.  Please try again later. (OK) "
Help?  This happens every time I try it.  Also happens on the iPod when trying to buy (iPod touch, iOS 6.1.6, PE178LL/A)

  • Can I set up Family sharing in Canada with out a credit card?

    Hi
I am having a problem setting up family sharing. I do not have a computer, so I am trying to set up family sharing off my iPad Air 2. When I set up my Apple ID a few years ago i chose no payment option. I don't have a credit card and have no want for one.
I tried to set up family sharing and it wants me to update my payment option. When I go to select a different payment option in my account it only shows credit card options. So I did some reading on Apples' site and it states I can use a debit card. However I can not find that option when I go to change it.
I am doing this on my iPad and I do live in Canada.
Would this be the reason I can not update my payment option to a debit card? Or am I missing something.
    Thank you for your help!

    Norby,
iTunes Family Sharing requires a credit card to set up, as a way of establishing that you -- the Family Organizer -- are the financially responsible adult for the associated minors.
Once the account is set up, you can switch to a debit card.

  • Can't set up family sharing...

I have an Apple ID and installed iCloud for windows. My son just bought an Ipod, and I would like to set him up with an ID under family sharing... Can I do this with my pc? I can't find family sharing when I log in ... I also logged into iCloud on the ipod with my Id, but again no family sharing... Can anyone help us?

    Hello cch4,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you'd like to set up Family Sharing, you would need to have either a Mac with OS X Yosemite installed, or an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iOS 8 installed.
Here's what you'll need to set up and start using Family Sharing:
An Apple ID signed in to iCloud and iTunes
iOS 8 on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
OS X Yosemite on your Mac
You can be a part of only one family at a time.
