Can I load my PowerMac as a hard drive on my laptop?

I was wondering if it were possible for me to plug in a firewire to my desktop and have it appear as hard-drives on my desktop.
If there is how would I do it?

Yes... start the PM in Target Mode.

  • Can I load applications to an external hard drive for use on a new Air?

Hi, so I have moved my itunes and iphotos to an external disk to free up space. I have a few games that I rarely use that I'd like to migrate to the external hard drive too, leaving just the tools I need to work on the air.
    1. Can I run games from the external hard drive?
    2. How do I migrate the games to the external drive? I assume drag and drop wont cut it?
    Thanks

    Hi
It was a streamed game - call of duty modern warfare - and seems to have loaded just fine from a drag and drop.
    Appreciate everyone's help.
    Thx.

  • Can't load OS X on new hard drive

Hi, sorry I am new to Mac and to be honest have no real intention of staying with Mac. I am simply trying to help my friend’s mom with her problem.
Here’s my scenario. I have a MacBook 2007 model.  Her hard drive crashed. I recommended getting a new computer, but she insists on keeping this one. I replaced the hard drive with a Seagate 500gb drive. I tried to use my friend’s MacBook OS X Install DVD. I got an error that said that I could not load this OS to this computer.
So, I searched some forums and learned how to use the DU to erase then partition the drive and used the GUID option as suggested. I restarted the start up DVD with no additional success.
I downloaded snowleopard_104a32_userdvd.dmg and tried to run it from my external, with no luck. I could get the “target” screen icon (I think, floating Y like symbol?) but could do nothing else. I have also downloaded a recovery.dmg, but I don’t really know what to do with it, as I can’t get the flash drive to register. For a while, I could not get the original MacBook OS X disc to eject, now I have it out.
So, when I restart now, I am completely back to the blinking folder. Next, I am going try the suggestions from this page:  http://osxdaily.com/2010/04/07/how-to-boot-a-mac-in-target-disk-mode/. But I need to buy a firewire and thunderbolt adapter. So, I will do that tomorrow. Hopefully, this will have worked, and I will have wasted 2 minutes of your life for having read this. If not, any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
I have seen other discussion, mostly archived. I didn't want to troll an old discussion.

But is this a definite fix?
It's a fix for the problem of trying to install from the wrong disc, or from a pirated download. I have no way of knowing whether the machine is in working order.
can I use his app disc?
If you mean the disc from another computer, no. You can order replacements for the original installation discs from Apple customer service. The Applications disc may be too old to work with Snow Leopard, however.
Snow Leopard is OS only, yes?
    Yes.

  • Can I install windows on a fresh hard drive?

I'm installing a fresh hard drive into a macbook pro, I'm wondering if the hard drive will accept a windows 7 disc to install as OS, or will it only accept OSX, and if I'd have to go through bootcamp.

Yes, it's a complete OS. But if you have an empty HDD to setup you will need to install the original OS X that came on the computer originally. If it came with Lion or later:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
If it had an earlier version of OS X:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

I have two iTunes libraries on two different pc's (one windows and one Mac).  Can I consolidate these on an external hard drive?

I'm sorry I just saw the last post. I had two users on my hard drive, one for me and one for my daughter, but I am not sure what you mean by partioning my external????? I have heard the term before, but don't know how to do it. I am having serious crashing issues with this computer and believe I really need to do a clean install. I just want to make sure everything for both ipods is safe (is???? I think so, everything is......I hate when the English language does this to me!)

  • I have about 130 gigs of movies on my iTunes and was wondering if I can just put them on my backup hard drive and remove them from my main computer to free up the space

I have about 130 gigs of movies on my iTunes and was wondering if I can just put them on my backup hard drive and remove them from my main computer to free up the space.

I haven't done this with an external drive, but I would imagine it works the same way as if you have multiple internal drives.  Also hopefully it works with less headache in OSX than in windows.
Anyway, move all your music over to your external, and then go into itunes -> preferences -> advanced -> iTunes media folder location.  Navigate to your drive, and pick the folder you want.  Ensure that your folders are set up like they are in your ~/Music/iTunes folder, or wherever your iTunes is currently pointing.  Then quit and restart itunes.  If your music doesn't show up, try dragging your music folder from your external onto itunes, and it will hopefully update your library.xml.
As far as Jerry's problem goes, you could try adding another music folder to your library.xml, but I really have no idea whether this will work or not.  If you want to give it a try (can't promise you won't corrupt your library.xml, so make a copy beforehand) you can find the music folder xml element right near the top of the xml file (open it with textedit/textmate/whatever text editor you want (NOT WORD)).  Curious to know if this works, and if it doesn't I have other ideas so let me know.

Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not complete a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive (10.5.8) and start anew (10.6.3).  My bad but is all lost?? Years of very important information....

You will need to purchase reovery sofware such as such as FileSalvage
    http://subrosasoft.com/software/filesalvage
You can download a demo copy that will tell you what it can recover
If you want to recover that you must pay for the software then
When you do the recovery, you will need another disk drive to receive the recovered files
Having install a new operating system on the disk after the retformat is going to gradually reduce the amount of data that this software will be able to recover for you

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.

  • Can I do a complete recovery of hard drive recovery and everything t over without an external drive if I don't care to save anythingcm

I have dozen OWC cases and drives and no issue so I know that they are good choice.
Don't know how much data and such and given the price of 1-2-3TB drives $160 for 1TB might be small but get the job done, while 3TB for $230 is a good drive + case investment to handle your needs and nice combo TimeMachien and other purposes - for external solution which you do want, so it can be safe and off line etc

Hello Ian. I am currently using Lion installed on a WD My Passport 500Gig drive connected to my MBPro via USB, which is still running 10.6.8. Like you I am not prepared to lose all my currently functioning Mac, but also like to see how the new OS runs before making the total switch, maybe when it gets to 10.7.2
So after you download Lion and select to run the installer it will show you which disk to install on, being the default SL drive you downloaded Lion with. But here you can click Other Disk and select the external HD. The installer will run and then boot into the external drive to complete the installation. From then on you can use Startup Disk or the Option key to select the preferred OS.
