Leonid.I wrote:You see, the kernel isn't the problem, udev is. Particularly, after updating the kernel you'd like to know if all your devices are correctly recognized and initialized. That's why you need a reboot. Kexec is more an emergency measure than a reboot-replacement.
Debian, well: at least Squeeze, has kexec installed by default.  However you must still "reboot" except you end up skipping the Power On Self Test, and also the GRUB kernel selection, then everything re-initializes and reboots as normal.
Edit
And since kexec is installed by default: every "reboot" is a "kexec reboot."  Only power-off then power-on will show you a POST.  When I was using Debian kexec was the first package I removed.  I like to see a POST.

  • Load new kernel without reboot?

I know, silly question. But is there a way, after a kernel upgrade, to unload the old kernel and load the new one without a reboot?

    To clear things up:
Kexec enables the current running kernel to spawn a new instance of itself.  This is primarily to be used in combination with Kdump, which uses Kexec to generate rich crash dump data in the event of a system failure.  Kexec does not store enough state to transfer your userland processes over to the new kernel instance.
There is no demand for switching kernels on the fly.  Doing so is the equivalent of overwriting your working kernel image with one you just built.  It's plain stupid and no one would do this in the name of "5 9's" uptime.
There is demand for 5 9's, however, and Xen does store enough state information to do live migration of virtual machines.  So, the way this would happen as follows:
    1) sees new kernel version is out
    2) compiles and installs kernel on a virtual machine managed by Xen
    3) tests services by making them available on the internal LAN
    4) live migrates the production VM to the kernel testbed
There you go, kernel upgrade without a reboot.

  • Can we load Transaction data without loading Master data, explain  w.r.tSID

Can we load Transaction data without loading Master data, if so can you explain me how and when Surrogate Ids/ Dimension Ids  gets generated.

    Hi,
We can load the transaction data without loading master data.
But for loading performance issues it is recommended not to load the transaction data first.
Every infoobject in the BW is identified by SID, that means which we are loading the transaction data, considering a scenario for an infocube, the system will identify the infoobject by existing sid against that infoobject in the bw and correspondingly create DIM id's.
Now consider the secnario where master data is not loaded and transaction data is being loaded.
Now the system should have sid to identify and infoobject and to create DIM id ( which is the combination of sid's of the characterisc in it)
And as the sid's are not yet created i mean as there is no referece for the master data, the system will first create the sid for that infoobject it means it will create a copy of the master data in that infoobject nd then create the dim ids based on it and then load the data.
Here the additional task of creating sids are also being done during loading the transaction data which hinders the loading performance
I hope this is clear5 now

  • If I close Firefox, I can't open it again without rebooting. It says that Firefox is still running.

I have Firefox 6.0.1. I am running it on a desktop with Windows XP. I have always loved it and need it for one program I use a lot. Lately, if I close Firefox for any reason, I can't open it back up without rebooting. It says Firefox is still running. I have deleted Firefox and reinstalled it several times with the same result.

  • Can't load updates from shop.

Pop up asks for pw of old non-(any more) existing AppleID.
    Can't get new ID in.
    New orders OK.
Work with iMac, iPad and iPhone, all the same problem.

I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. All of the content that you bought with the old ID are part of the old ID and can only be updated with the old ID. Apple does not transfer contnent from one ID to another and Apple does not merge IDs. You would need to recover the old ID to update.

  • How do I update to iOS 4.3 in my iPad 1.  I can't load most apps without it.

Can I update my iPad to iOS 4.3?

You can only update it to iOS 5.1.1, that is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple for it.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

  • T510: Can't load Windows 7, Keeps rebooting only works in safe mode

Trying to get my T510 up and running after my W520 went DOA after a bios update.  When i power on the laptop it tries to load Windows 7 then goes into a rebooting loop.  I can get into safe mode with networking just fine without issues, so i figured it was a display driver problem.  In safe mode I unstalled the Nvidia drivers and tried to reboot but still got the same issue.  I went into the BIOS to see if I could disable optimus and use just the intel GPU, but I don't even see a setting for disabling it or reference to the NVidia GPU at all.  I'm positive it was there before.
I've swapped hard drives and memory modules out.  Even tried to do a fresh install of Windows and it still won't load.  I'm out of ideas.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Try and applied the machine updated in Safe mode. It usually works. If your install is from MS DVD then be sure all the foundation software is installed. Chipset tool especially and build from there.
You could also run the memory diagnostic after booting from the MS Windows 7 DVD. Eliminate a bad memory module. (If you have two) take the first on out and move the second one into the first slot. See if its stable, remove and insert the other SODIM into the first slot. Why, normal mode is very intense on RAM and also address a lot more memory.

  • I have OS X 10.5.8.  Can I load Snow Leopard without losing data and then upgrade to Lion?

I am using OS X 10.5.8.  I have a disk with Snow Leopard on it, but I don't know if I downloaded it.  Can I download this Snow Leopard disk without risking a loss of data on my MacBook Pro?

If by "download" you mean "install," then you can install Snow Leopard over a Leopard system. But anything can happen, so it would be wise to backup first.
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from the Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Install Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Boot from the Snow Leopard installer DVD.  Follow the onscreen instructions. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

    Hi
In one of the Production Server we are facing issue in which server is up for last 365 days.
While checking we found that kernel memory utilization is itself 64 %.
I want solution by which we can free up Memory used by kernel which should be normally 12-15 %.
I am aware about that rebooting the server will resolve the issue.

  • Can my client update photos without the Muse program?

Hi i have seen this asked before but without any clear answer. My client wants a site made but he wants to be able to update images on the site, like adding more, adding text and deleting and updating images. Just wondering if this is possible to do without haveing the Muse programe. Can he make these changes from the business catalyst manage site? or will he have to have the program?
Any insight into this greatly appreciated, thank you.

At this time, sharing the Muse file while your client has Muse program too is the only way around this otherwise one can alter the code directly which we do NOT recommend as manual changes made to the published site will not reflect in the Muse project file stored locally. However, this is something being worked upon by Muse engineering for future releases. Please refer to the following thread here - http://forums.adobe.com/message/5198212

  • How can I fix app downloading issues?  Can only load/update apps via sync with laptop.

I cannot download, reload,or update my Apps via Wifi. I can only accomplish this by syncing the phone via iTunes and laptop via cable. When I choose to install or update I get a "waiting" message indefinitely.

Issue solved. I found that there was a PodCast that had not finished downloading for some reason. I deleted the PodCast app and all PodCast downloads and Apps download fine now.

  • Photoshop 6 for MAC - can't load updates

    Hi all,
I recently purchased (from a trial version) Photoshop 6 for Macs. I had used the demo for about a week before purchasing and then loaded the serial number to activate. Things seem fine but when I get prompted to download updates, it seems to go thru the motions but then returns with a message indicating - "cannot locate Product"....Maybe files loaded in wrong place?

    Barbara,
    Thanks for the reply.
I did not change any of the file destinations - they indicate that they go the the default folder .......Library/Application Support/Adobe/Updater5/Install.
I do think that the update was related to a raw file however. Perhaps this is normal since the raw files (as you stated) need to be manually updated. If this is true, is there a place to download this file?
    Thanks
    Lou

  • Updating Safari without rebooting

I read an earlier topic that was closed out, because the original post was asking for an improvement to OS X, but I have found a work around.
Why should I have to reboot when I update Safari, even though it's not part of the OS? After all, one of the selling points of OS X is that being a Unix system, it does not have to be rebooted for every little change like Windows does.
OK, opt-cmd-escape, then Force Quit the updater. Safari will still be upgraded when you restart your Mac the next time, because you care about the earth and turn your Mac off overnight.
I'm not sure if it will work if you try to use Safari before you reboot. I use Firefox, and keep Safari on my Mac and upgraded only because it is usually best to have a backup browser.

Rebooting takes a lot more time than killing the Software Update program.
Killing a program just means hitting a single 2 modifier keystroke, then clicking on the program and hitting Force Quit.
Rebooting means closing all of my files and programs, so that I save only the files I want to save. Then I have to wait for the Mac to come back up and reload all of my login items, of which I have only 8, but these are very important.
And frankly, I don't want to interrupt what I'm in the middle of doing at the time.

  • Can I load FCP 7 without master templates loading?

Master Templates are causing 10 min start up times.  How do I either move them to a location where they won't load on startup or is there a way to disable them from loading while keeping them there for Motion to find?  And yes I added a bunch of custom ones as well some time back from various freebie sites.  Thx

Thx, yup that was it.  Back to 30 sec startup.  I had over 10 gigs of template stuff.  I don't know if this was from when I dabbled with X over the Summer or what.  But a huge thx, I kinda figured that was the only real solution, just didn't know I could keep them in the FCS folder.

Heck everything is spiffier now.  The interface itself feels like a new sports car now.  It had gotten sluggish at some point and seeing how I've been in and out of the hospital the last year I couldn't pinpoint when.  No more spinning balls and the menus open immediately.  Wow!!!
