Can I lock InDesign files?

Can I lock InDesign files in CC if multiple users are wishing to access and edit the same files, to prevent conflicts?
It looks in CS5/6 as if this was done via Managed Files but not clear if it can be done on CC.
Any help appreciated.
M.

Our team don't use InCopy.... the fact "Assignments" are never mentioned wrt InDesign in isolation led me to believe they weren't what we were looking for? (Can only be accessed in the context of working with InCopy?)
Our problem is specifically around multiple designers working on InDesign files and assets simultaneously.

  • How can I lock the file in use

Dear All, I transfer the large text file to Solaris 10 server and copy the this file with transfer not success to another path. but I can open the file with end of file. How can I lock the file with transfer not successfully.

Locking on UNIX is cooperative, not manditory. That means that all applications need to check for the lock explicitly and then not use the file if the lock exists.
But if something is accessing the file beyond your control, locking isn't going to prevent it.
If you do control all the access points, then take a look at lockf or flock functions.

  • Can I export InDesign files to Adobe Illustrator for editing?

Can I export InDesign files to Adobe Illustrator for editing? I am not familiar with InDesign, but I am familiar with Illustrator.  I have CS6.  Hope someone can help.  I have a large Orientation Booklet that needs updating and do not have the time to get tutored in InDesign.

    No.
The closest you’ll get is a PDF and Illustrator is not a general purpose PDF editor.
    Good luck.

  • Can i lock a file that only i can access with a password

You could put it on a USB memory stick, the use Encrypt in Finder. MacOS Hints has notes on it.

  • Can't See Indesign File, It Crashes, I Re-open It and It Works

When I open my large Indesign file, everything appears normally except I have a black screen where the document should display. The document tab exists as does the thumbnail view of all the pages, etc, but no actual document. When I try to close, Indesign crashes. When I re-open, the file opens fine and I can see everything as normal. This pattern of black screen - crashing - reponing to normal repeats itself over and over.
I'm on a Windows machine running the most recent version of Indesign CC.
I've tried "save as" to a new file name - same problem. I just go off the phone with Adobe support and they messed around, trashing my preferences and creating a new user account. The new administrator account kind of worked but I still got the problem to persist - once.
Before this all started, I was moving files around and did not move a "lock" file with the main file from one of the crashes. I wonder if this could be related? Any ideas?

    More information:
This problem persists with other large Indesign documents of mine. It appears that the Indesign files themselves are not corrupt.
This problem definitely persists in the "Administrator" user account that was created with Adobe's support. So, switching to a new user did not help.
At the same time, I'm experiencing problems with Creative Cloud file storage, where I used to store some of the files associated with this document. However, it just doesn't feel like the two problems should be related.
What is Indesign doing??? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Two people can open one InDesign file at the same time

We have Mac (10.8.5) users who share files on a file server. They are connected to the file shares via NFS. The users are using Creative Suite 5.5. When a user opens a file, they get the appropriate ".idlk" lock file. For example:
    ~test~0kjyv(.idlk
    TEST.indd
As far as I used to know, this used to prevent anyone else from opening that same file. But now, multiple users can open the same file. Whoever makes the first save seems to win. The next person who tries to save the file will get the following error:
"Another user has modified the Adobe InDesign document TEST.indd. To prevent damage to the document, InDesign is shutting down."
InDesign then locks up and starts beachballing. The only option is to force quit.
I tried updating the users to the latest version of CS5.5 InDesign which is 7.5.3.
    Has anyone else encountered this?
    Thanks,
    Rob

Maybe it is something to do with using NFS? Our Mac's are bound to AD, and use NFS shares because they have issues with SMB/CIFS. They are connecting to an EMC NAS. All of the users have read/write permissions to the files.
I tried the same process on a test AFP share that I created from a Mac OS X Server, and then it works as expected. When the second user tries to open the file, they cannot, and they get an error message:
"Cannot open the document TEST.indd. You may not have permission or the document may be open already."
Why doesn't it behave this way on the NFS share?
The permissions look comparable for each:
    NFS share:
    -rw-rw-r--@  1 ADuser  ADgroup   6823936 Oct 29 16:17 TEST.indd
    -rw-rw-r--@  1 ADuser  ADgroup        0 Oct 30 09:37 ~test~0kjyv(.idlk
    AFP share:
    -rw-rw-r--@  1 admin    staff          6823936 Oct 30 09:33 TEST.indd
    -rw-rw-r--@  1 admin    staff               0 Oct 30 09:35 ~test~0kjyv(.idlk

  • Can't amend InDesign file??

    Hi,
I have recently been provided with an InDesign file and I need to update a couple of photos.  The problem is when I click on any tool and move it over the document, I get an icon of a pencil with a line through it, and I can't make any amendments?  Is there a simple setting I can change to get around this??
    Thanks,
    Andy

Layers panel. The current layer is locked, although the layer containing the images you want to edit may not be and you just didn’t click on them because of the cursor.

  • Can't open Indesign file. Error message says I need to upgrade plug-ins?

I created a business card for my husband from my indesign 5.5 version. I haven't upgraded my version since creating the file and for some reason I can't open the file. I get the error message 'Cannot open "Business Card - Ryan.indd". Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign.'
When I look at the business card file with finder it says it was created with InDesign 5.5. When I view my InDesign application through my finder applications it says I have InDesign 5.5 so I'm not sure why this error message is saying to upgrade my version of InDesign.

I wish I had a dollar for every person who claimed there was no way a file was saved in a later version only to find out it was.
If you post a link to it someone here will save it back for you.

  • Can't open InDesign file in latest version of InDesign

I've received InDesign files from a colleague, and when I open them it says it was created in a newer version of InDesign. We are both on Macs, CC subscription, and we are both up to date on CC (all apps up to date). Why can't I open his files??

You need to download and install InDesign CC. You only CS6 installed.
Easiest way to install InDesign CC is to go to creative.adobe.com and click on download center. Find InDesign CC and download from there.

  • Can't open indesign files sent via email

hello, a customer sent me indesign-files (CS6, CS4 and IDML). i think they are using the mac version. i have indesign CS6 on pc and everytime i try to open one of the files, indesign reports an failure: missing file oder missing authorisation. does anyone know any solution?

As previously mentioned, the files must be extracted from any archive and saved to a hard drive location before you open it. I have seen this error message once or twice in the past with a file that should have opened (stored on a network drive, which may have played a role), I think. They didn't happen to also include the .idlk file with what they sent? If so, delete it.
Have you tried clicking the "As a Copy" radio button inthe open dialog to make a new, untitled copy? If that works you can save with a new name and move on.

  • Can't open Indesign files

I can't open a Indesign file I have been working on for days! Get a message saying tha "filealianses" may be missing! What do I do?
    BR Nille

What procedure are you using to open the file? Is the file supposed to be on a network share?
We've seen reports of files on networks being changed to aliases. I believe restoring the name to the .indd extension may allow the file to reopen.

  • Can I Open Indesign File In CorelDraw Without Losing The Applied Effects?

i have been using Indesign for quite some time now and i have considerable experience in Corel too. My problem is that if i export an indesign file as PDF and then open it in CorelDraw, the file loses the effects i applied.
For example i apply blur effect on a picture in Indesign and after exporting it as a PDF, i open it in CorelDraw, the file would lose the Blur effect i applied.
I am confused how to retain the effects i applied in Indesign so that it shows up in Corel as well.I DO NOT wish to edit the file in Corel because the file would be transferred for printing purpose only.
    Thanks in advance

Adobe and Corel products handle effects (like blur, or dropshadow, or even gradients) completely differently from each other. The only chance of having them move from one to the other is to rasterize any such effects before making the PDF (DO NOT save this over your original file!).
Note that I said it's a chance. Even these will be mishandled from time to time.
    Good luck.

  • Can't combine InDesign files to single PDF file

I'm using Windows XP, Acrobat 8 Professional, InDesign (CS3). Here is the problem: When trying to combine three InDesign files into one single PDF file with Acrobat 8, I get an error message saying something about expecting PDF default presents but get 'Standard'. I've gone into the InDesign files and set the presets to another setting but still get the same message. Quite confused as to how to fix this. Does anyone know, or is there another way of creating a single PDF of three separate Indesign files??

Try exporting the files from within InDesign as PDF and them combine them in Acrobat.

  • Can I lock certain files in Word on my Imac G5?

I would like to secure some of my Word Documents so that others who may be using my computer, cannot access them.  is there a way to do this?

    Highlight the file>Get Info>General
Place a check mark (enable) next to "Locked"
Your file should now show a padlock.

  • Is there a way that I can view Adobe indesign files without having Adobe indesigner on my Mac

I often get sent Adobe indesign files, but I am unable to view these because I do not have the software installed on my Mac.  I wondered if anyone knew of any software that would enable me to view these files.   I do not need to edit these files and only need to view them.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Alice

    Hi,
Many thanks for your response to my question.  This does seem a way around the problem.
Today I was sent indesign files from a designer and I wasn't able to check they were the right version, so I passed them on for them to be printed and then found out they were the wrong version when I got the PDF back for me to approve by the print house.
    Thanks again
    Alice
