Can I lock individual cells in Numbers like I can in Excel?

I need to lock specific cells to protect the formulas in those cells.  Is there anyway to do this in Numbers like there is in Excel?

No, Michele, you can only lock entire tables. What you must do is to segregate your stuff into what needs to be locked and what needs to be not locked, in separate tables, lock one table and keep the other open.

  • Can you 'lock' a cell in numbers?

Was wondering if you can 'lock' or protect a cell in numbers like you can in excel?

    Alan,
No, you can not lock an individual cell in Numbers unless that cell happens to be a 1-cell table. Entire tables may be locked, but no individual cells within a table. So, put all the stuff you want to lock into one table and all the stuff that will be dynamic into another.

  • Block, columns, files or individual cells in numbers?

    Hello,
There's any way to block from editing an individual cell or file or column?
Normally I use some cells or columns to use specifyc formulas on them, with  automathic results.
Not being able to block those, it's really easy to delete the formula.
I could use a Formular for editing data, and block the full table for showing results, but I would prefer to do it on the smae table as in excel, just having some columns editable and others not blocked with automathic formulas.
    Is this possible somehow?
    Thanks
    Sergi.

I don't think so, unless maybe your formulas were on a different table on a different sheet and you just referenced them from the data entry table.
Also, have you looked into Forms? I don't use them much, but I do see that you cannot edit formulas from there.

  • Tab past locked cells in numbers?

does anyone know if you can lock individual cells in numbers? i need to be able to navigate from unlocked cell to unlocked cell avoiding all locked cells.
it's easy in excel, we use complex vlookup formulas that return information to other cells and need to protect those formula cells from accidental deletion. protecting cells is also a nice way to limit tabbed navigation to unprotected cells only.
does anyone know if i can do this with numbers, can't seem to find anything that suggest it can do it.
    thanks...

Apparently cell locking is not supported. From Macworld's review:
"There are also quite a few power user features missing from Numbers, such as custom number formats, pivot tables, cell naming, *cell locking*, password protection, splitting windows, and text orientation within a cell, among others."

  • Individual cell naming

    I didn't notice a way to individually name cells;
    salesTaxRate
    MonthlyAlimonyToTheEx
    etc,
    < Edited by Host >

Try not to think of a Numbers spreadsheet like an Excel spreadsheet (which consists of a single grid of cells). Numbers (like its ancestor Trapeze) works differently. The best way is to separate your calculations from your constants; making separate tables for each. In your example: you would set up a table with one header row/data row or one header column/data column, say a single table with a header row containing "salesTaxRate", "MonthlyAlimonyToTheEx", and so on with a single row containing their corresponding values underneath (no additional rows, footers etc.). You can then use "salesTaxRate" as an entry in formulas elsewhere on the sheet and it will automatically refer to the value under "salesTaxRate" in your constants table. You can even get a little weird and make your sales tax value a slider to see how it effects the numbers on your spreadsheet as you vary it, dynamically.

  • Protect individual Cells?

Can you protect individual cells? I am trying to make an invoice. I want to make sure that when values are entered in a cell that they can not be changed, but you can change the quantity etc.
I know I can do in excel, but I am trying to convert my business to mac. I really need this to work on my mac as well as my Ipad. Help!

Protection ("Lock") can be set for only a whole table, not for individual cells.
One workaround is to use one table only for calculations, including transfers of values from a second table, used exclusively for data entry.
With some planning, it may be possible to incorporate both tables into a single invoice page.
OTOH, the ability to lock individual cells on a table seems a likely goal for a Feature Enhancement request. Go to the Application menu ("Numbers") in Numbers, and choose Provide Numbers Feedback. Be prepared to wait until at least the next version of Numbers to see any results.

  • How to "lock" a cell reference in Numbers??

HELP! I am a recent convert from Windows based machines to Apple. I am very familiar with Excel and need to figure out how to do something in Numbers....
I need to know how to lock a cell reference so that when you drag the formula down or across it keeps the same cell reference. In Excel you can do this by picking the cell and then hitting F4 to either lock the column, row or both.
Anybody out there help a newbie?? Thanks

Thanks Jerrold, I'm using them that way. My request has to do with
using them as an Absolute Reference versus a relative reference.
If I specify a header ref for a cell in a formula, when I drag that
formula to some other cells I want Numbers to treat it as absolute,
ie. as if I had said $A$5. What I am finding is that it does it's default
behaviour, ie. it is translating the formula reference to a new cell just
as it would do for a reference like A5.
ie. with header references, what is the equivalent of specifying $A$5?
    ($header name doesn't work ).
    thx, rob

  • LOCKING CELLS IN "NUMBERS"

I am new to Apple and am working in a spreadsheet in 'Numbers" I have tried to lock cells and tables and spreadsheets.  The solution provided by "Help" does not work as the  "Arrange - Lock" function is greyed out.  It seems odd that there are explanations within Help that do not work.  What am I doing wrong?

    Where do I find it?
    Chris,
Your post has been moved to the proper discussion area. For future reference, go to All Content/Communities > iWork.
Numbers, like the other iWork apps, has a great free User Guide. You can download if from the Help menu of Numbers.
You will find that a Table can be locked, but a smaller portion of a table can't be locked. Since you can have manu tables per sheet, the best thing to do is to put those things that need to be locked in separate tables from the things that can't be locked.

  • Hello, I would like to know how to add or delete single cell in numbers.

Hello, I would like to know how to add or delete single cell in numbers.

If by delete you really mean clear the contents of a cell, then just click once on the cell and hit the 'delete' button.
    Before:
    After hitting delete button:
In some circumstances you can actually delete one cell.
For example here, I make this choice:
    Resulting in this:
So it's not strictly true that Numbers does not delete one cell, ever.  It can if you have a one-column table.
So never say never or not ever! Enough pedantry for today!

Is it possible to lock individual app like messages, photos etc without jailbreak in io8....?

No third-party app can do what you want as those apps do not have access to iOS as a whole. They are (for the most part) sandboxed, and cannot directly access other apps.

  • How can I insert an image into a cell in Numbers for iPad?

    Hi,
is there any way to insert an image inside a cell using Numbers for iPad? I tried doing it on desktop version and it works, then I shared it through iwork.com and downloaded into my iPad and it's showing fine on the iPad ( although there's no way to edit or change the image inside the cell ) but when I try to do the same task on iPad itself, the image always comes floating even if I place the cursor inside a cell before inserting.
any idea how to do it or if it's even possible?
    thanks.
    John

Images can be added to cells only as "image fill." Cell fill is an attribute of the cell, not content of the cell. Only cell content can be retrieved by a formula or by copying the content of the cell.
Copying the cell will also copy its format, including the image fill, but I've found no way to extract the image from the cell.

  • How do i lock cells in numbers

How do I lock cells in Numbers?  I'm trying to create a spread sheet that will have unused cells and I want to lock them so my associates don't accidentally fill them in and cause the finished product to look muddled.

    Wayne,
I previously could lock tables in my Numbers tables in my Spreadsheets by tapping the top left corner and it would show up as an option to lock it. As of Numbers 2.0 (noticed today), I get the option to unlock tables, but not to relock them after making the corrections.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!
