Can I lock the iTunes Library?

This is a public computer with a well-organized iTunes library.  People keep messing it up--moving files to other playlists and renaming playlists. I would like to make the whole thing read-only, so that the only one who will be able to add, move, or delete anything is the admin.  Is that do-able?

iTunes cannot open if the database is locked. Best you can do is back up the current file, then restore if needed.
Exactly.  I tried that. I also set the permissions of the Music foder (the one inside iTunes Media) to read-only (the admin has r/w), but that does not seem to do anything aside from keeping that folder (and all its contents) from accepting changes.  However, when I planted a couple of test mistakes within iTunes, then quit iTunes, logged out of the user, then got back in, the mistakes were still there in iTunes (although not in the Music folder).  I obviously don't know how iTunes works and where it gets its information.
How about restoring the library?  Is that easy to do?  Or would parental controls help?  I don't want to set anything up that would hobble users' internet use, though.

How public is public? If it is your library can you not "train" the other users of the computer to leave it alone?

The iTunes Library is maintained for the use of the users of the computer, and I suspect they are vandalizing it by accident.  As for training, of course.  But these are not techies.  Since they don't need to add or change anything--just listen to the files--I hoped there was a way to bullet-proof iTunes the way I can FileMaker Pro.

4  of us in the family with iphonesor ipods share the same apple id so that we can share the itunes library . However , this means we all receive each others imessages, unless we disable imessaging. Is there a way of sharing itunes library (ie.g with 4 separate ids) that avoids the sharing of imessages? .

Thanks, Terence, but if she was inclined to upload things, I wouldn't need access!
Here is an example: we go on vacation, she takes 250 photos, edits twenty of the best shots, and uploads three to facebook.  I want to make an album including some of the edited shots and some of the less perfect but still fun shots - so I need all 250 photos - uploading that many photos to a photosharing site takes forever even if she did it - but she won't.  I used to just hijack her computer for a day, but I'd like to be able to hijack her iphoto library without stealing her computer...if possible!
Thanks for any help you can offer!

  • I can only access the itunes library if i plug in my external hard drive.  is there a way to add the music to my internal hard drive?

i can only access my itunes library if i plug in my external hard drive.  how do i find where the itunes songs are on my external hard drive and how do i move them to my computers internal hard drive so i no longer have to have the external hard drive plugged in?

When the drive is connected, use the Organize Library command in iTunes. If the entire library is located there, drag it to the internal drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, and point it there.

  • How can I refresh the iTunes library

    Hi,
How can the iTunes library be refreshed to remove oold entries and update file info. MP3 tags may well have been updated in other programs by it seem that iTunes does take this into account and I can't find a simple way of updateing this info other than to play a file.
I would have thought there would be a simple refresh button or similar.

Just select them all, using Edit > Select All.
Then right-click and Get Info. Don't change anything, just cancel out of it.
There is also a java script you can run, found here:

  • ITunes 7.6 can't open the iTunes library under other accounts

I created a new account in Windows Vista and wanted to just open my iTunes library that's on an external HD.
I hold down left shift, and open an existing library, but I keep getting an error that the iTunes database is locked.
I've checked the permissions on the file and folders, and I have the rights to the folders/files, as well, nothing is set for read only on the file level.
If I log out and login with the old user name, I can access the library just fine, so it's not corrupt.
    Any ideas?

It's difficult to explain, but in a nutshell, iTunes doesn't do well with windows folder paths.

  • HT1349 Question about the cloud.  Can I transfer the Itunes library to a new computer using the cloud?

If I get a new home PC, can I use the cloud to tranfer my Itunes library to the new computers harddrive?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
No. That would only be valid for content purchased in the iTunes Store, because you can redownload purchased content onto a different computer for free, and it is also valid if you are using iTunes Match, but note that settings, device backups... will not be transferred. Moreover, if you have got an iPhone, iPod or iPad, you will be asked to erase it before being able to use it with your new PC.
Instead of doing that, I recommend you to transfer the whole iTunes library to your new PC by following these steps > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751 Finally, do the "Restoring your iTunes Library backup" on your new PC.

  • Can I optimize the iTunes library on my external drive?

I have my iTunes library on my external drive, which by the way, is very full (only 40 of the 500 gb free). It takes ages for ITunes to start up, and I believe it's because of the very full harddrive. Is this really the case, though? And is there a way to seppd up opening iTunes?
    André

I don't think a G5 is that old. Maybe running Leopard would change things, but I have to save for that...
Still, it started to take longer after I had put all my files from the main drive on the external one so i think it's because that drive is almost full. Is there a program to optimize an external drive, I remember you have the for the pc, reformat or something like that.

  • How can you change the Itunes library? I updated it, and chose the wrong library, and now I can't change it helppppppp pleasee!!! D: ;(

This *****! I updated my Itunes, and it asked me to choose a library, and I chose the wrong one, and now I can't change it. What am I supposed to do now?

Firstly, I caution your approach to allow users to alter the orientation of the report. Crystal Reports doesn't adapt too well when the orientation is modified. You'll end up with fields dropped off on the right hand side of the report, or with a large gap on the right. Our engine doesn't do any auto adjusting of fields when you alter the orientation.
In order to see the changes it is best to re-load the page and get a new viewer. You can choose to store the ParameterFields in a Session variable for re-use on the post back so your users aren't re-prompted for values.

  • How can I get the iTunes library artwork to sync with the actual artist for iPhone 5S?

All of mine, and my friends, iPhone 5S artwork is all over the place. One artwork is for the wrong artist, etc.... how to fix?

    Hi endeavorpilates,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand your album artwork is matched to the wrong album or artist when you sync music from iTunes. If the artwork is correct in iTunes, I suggest removing all music from the iPhone 5s by syncing it off > reset the iPhone > sync the music back on. The steps for syncing music off and back on can be found in the following article.
iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296
This article explains how to reset your iPhone 5s.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

  • HT4352 My iTunes library is on my brand new PC. It cannot recognize my wireless network. How can I share the iTunes library with my new Apple TV?

What do I need to do?

    Preliminary conditions:
Through settings, you must log the Apple TV in with your iCloud account.
In iTunes, choose Advanced > Turn on Home Sharing from the menu bar.
The Apple TV and your computer must be connect to the same network.
The Apple TV is sold in many different countries. However, iTunes is discriminately serviced. Whereas in the United States, movies and musics are sold in their entirety, there is no such services in Korea ― only app purchases. If your iCloud (or Apple) acount falls into the latter category, and you login to the Apple TV with that account, Apple TV will automatically convert its systems to the similar limitations.
Here's what happens when I login with my U.S. account to the Apple TV.
But when I login with my Korean account, theres only the 'Computers' and 'Settings' menu.

  • Where can I find the iTunes library icon in OS 10.8.5?

I have a new iMac and I'm trying to reset the number of plays in Itunes... very frustrated with google results apparently not up to date with the current operation system.

Open iTunes, go to Music and from the Songs tab, select the song or songs > right-click (CTRL-click) > Reset Plays
    COMMAND+A will select all

  • I have 60 000 songs on a hard drive. The songs are referenced to the media file and not stored in the media file. I have moved the songs to another external drive. The itunes library has lost the link to the media files. How can I restore the links?

I have all my songs (60 000) on a remote drive. The drive is wireless networked. I installed a new router and had to map the drive again. Once this was done itunes could no longer locate the music. My music is not sitting in my media file but is rather referenced to the location of the music. Now that the location has changed due to the remapped drive how can I link the itunes library to the songs (media)again.
I have read many help comments and forums but so far nothing specific about relinking once the songs have already been moved and are referenced songs.
A step by step procedure would be helpful.
    Thank you
    Graham

I've uploaded a newer version that might catch that error. For some background on the script look at this thread.
iTunes remembers the location of each file in the database. If you right-click on a missing file, click Get Info, cancel when it asks you to try to find it, then look on the summary tab it will show you the last known location in the form file://localhost/<some path>. If you put the files back where they are expected to be, close iTunes and reopen, then iTunes will find them again. If not my script can attempt the task. When the script asks for a media folder you should respond with Z:\ since that seems to be where the artist folders are located.

  • Can I split my iTunes library between two HD's?

I am planning on converting my movie library and putting it on a large external HD, so that I can play movies on my TV via AppleTV. The only problem is, I think I may need at least 6 TB to do this. If I go with an external unit with two HD's (2 x 3 TB or larger), can I split the iTunes library onto the 2 drives, and still have access to all of my movies all of the time? If I go for more drives in one unit (4 x 2 TB), is it also feasible? Also, would I require something like a Thunderbolt connection, or would FW800 or USB3 work okay?

that works for anything he purchases after he creates the new account.  What about his current music that currently resides in my itunes library?  How can I get his current music out of my library into his new account/library??  Thanks..
Copy it to his computer into his iTunes library and authorize his computer with the iTunes account used to purchase them..
You cannot tranfser items from one iTunes account to another. Purchased items remain part of the iTunes account is was purchased with.
iTunes account - used to purchase items
iTunes library - where purchases (and CD RIPs) go on the computer

  • Moving the iTunes Library database

I hae the iTunes media file on an external hard disk.
I  need to move to a new windows 7 laptop and want to leave my media file on the external harddisk.
I plan to install a new iTunes on the new laptop. Can I copy the iTunes library data base from the old laptop to the new one, hook up the external hard drive to  the new laptop and iTunes working.
Thanks for your thoughts and ideas.

Provided the external drive has the same drive letter on the new system then yes, that should work.
