Can i lose my songs?

i cannot play any of my songs in the iTunes library. the dialog box says ' the song could not be used used the original file could not be found. would you like to locate?
i am not able to locate it anyway.

*This assumes you cannot play ANY songs on iTunes.*
Locate all you songs and put them in your My Music folder. Then, delete all the songs from your iTunes(not the entire song files, just the iTunes shortcuts to them) . The got to File>Add Folder To Library>My Music.
All your songs should get added to the library again
The reason this problem happens is that the original song files have a changed location.

  • Backing up my iphone - onto new computer - so I lose all songs I did not purchase on itunes? If I copied CDs into itunes on an old computer that I don't have access to anymore and I upgrade my software to 5.0 I lose anything not on the new computer itune?

So my home computer decided to quit... I am trying to start using my work computer more now. I have itunes with a library of only 150 songs. My iphone has over 550 songs. Even after I sync my phone to my new computer and mark items purchased to be sync it doesn't increase on itunes. I know I've purchased songs on my iphone so that is my first problem...
Next, at home I copied CDs onto itunes which I sync'd onto my iphone. Am I right that I will lose all these songs now when I update my software?
    To summarize:
I have no way to back up songs that were not purchased on itunes?
How do I sync my iphone purchases into itunes correctly (since it isn't working now)
Will I lose content from my iphone, if it doesn't show up on itunes before I update my software to 5.0?
    Am I making sense?

Since your updating from iOS 4 to iOS 6, you will most likely lose your songs, but if songs were purchased from iTunes, you can try this:
Downloading past purchases from App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
You can redownload from iTunes on your iTouch, if running iOS 5 or better.

  • When switching my iphone to a new apple ID will i lose my songs, apps, and imessages?

i currently share an itunes account with several people and devices. i would like to make my own apple ID. When switching my iphone to the new apple ID will i lose my songs, apps, and/or imessage conversations?

You need a valid/working email address in order to create an account.
Create a NEW account/ID for her using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before. Make sure you specify a birthdate that results in being at least 13 years old

Use the new ID on her iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
    Settings>GameCenter
and Settings>iCloud if you want her to have separate Contacts Calendar and some other things.
Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases.
Note that if yo chaghe acounts in Settings>iTunes and App Store media will NOT be deleted from the ipod but:
    - Apps are locked to the account that purchased them.
    - To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.

  • Will i lose my songs and pictures if i upgrade my iphone to the 5.0 version if this isn't the original computer i used when i first got itunes?

Will I lose my songs and pictures if i upgrade my iphone to the 5.0 version if the computer i am going to do it on is not the original computer i had itunes on, my old computer died!

You can back up your Iphone in Itunes on any computer. Then restore after the upgrade if it was erased. iTunes has an option to even pick which backup file you want to use. I believe its pressing the alt key holding it and pressing restore. I did it on a windows pc so might be different. for a big update, apple iOS's are generally good with keeping files, but its always a good idea to back up your device. I just upgraded my MBP to Lion and didnt loose anything.

  • ITunes Can't find Some Songs?

Hey guys - I had my Ext HD damaged and had to get a new one. I had my library and everything else important backed up (I keep all files on an ext HD to keep my computer HD free of crap). I didn't lose anything. When I opened iTunes and directed it to my new location it failed to find about 1/3 of my library. It looks like all of my data including ratings, play counts, etc are all there. The only issue is when I get to a song it can't find I have to manually direct it back to that file. What confuses me is it had no problem with songs in the same album, so they are in the same file. It seems very arbitrary as to what it did and did not locate.
My question is, I can go through each song individually and point iTunes towards it. There has to be a way to do this in bulk. Anyone have an idea? There seems to be no problem with the library, files, folders, etc.
    Thanks for the help.

I had the exact same problem. My iTunes library was on an external drive. It was working just fine. Then there were some problems with the external drive, so I got a new external drive and loaded the entire iTunes library onto it.
I used iTunes preferences to direct it to the iTunes folder on the new external drive. Then I pressed the Option key while starting up iTunes to also redirect it to the iTunes folder on the external because (for reasons I can't fathom) setting the folder location in preferences wasn't enough.
I have the same problem as zblom (original poster) - but only with about 5% of the songs in my library. About 95% of my songs have no problem. But there's an exclamation point next to about 5% of them, and when I try to play them, iTunes says it can't find the file. I've navigated my way to a few of the songs and then iTunes can find it. But I don't want to do that for about 300 songs - that would take hours.
Any ideas what causes this? And (more importantly) any suggestions for how to get iTunes to recognize the location of those songs with the exclamation points?

  • If I make an apple Id,will I lose my songs and apps

If I make an apple Id,will I lose my songs and apps?

You can create another Apple ID for yourself. The songs and Apps you bought will remain on your device. Whenever there will be an update to an App bought with your mum's Apple ID though, you will be prompted to enter her Apple ID and its password.
Same thing with the songs. If you delete them at anytime, a re-download will require her Apple ID and its password.
Apart from that, don't worry about creating a new Apple ID, you can have several different Apple IDs... just don't mess them up.

  • I recently got a new computer and installed itunes, i connected my ipod and it has some songs that i downloaded legally from my other computer, if i sync my ipod..will i lose the songs downloaded? thanks

yeah please answer the question..i downloaded songs on my other computer and they are on my ipod but do not show up on my itunes because they are not downloaded..will i lose the songs if i sync my ipod?

    Yes.
You need to copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
You can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod:  File>transfer Purchases

  • How can i redownload purchased songs

I've switched computers so many times and every time i always lose the songs i purchased. On my dads ipad you can just redownload all the previously purchasd songs right there. But not on my ipod. How do i get them back without having to spen $60+ more dollars on songs that i already bought

Good God! If it was that easy life would be great! It isn't - it really is not! Mostly you have to buy tracks over and over again. "You already bought this track. Do you want to buy it again?" Thats the message you get when you go to buy a track you have bought before. . Well - duh - no! Just download it to me for free if you know I bought it before....
But if course iTunes doesn't . It knows you bought it before, but now all it wonders is whether you want to buy it again. It doesn't care if you bought it before. Its just curious if you want to buy it all over again. Cos you sure as f@@@ aint getting it for free. Regardless if you already paid good money for it.

  • Can't access itunes songs from an old e-mail id

I just purchased a new iPod and am adding songs. One of the songs I try to drop and grag is blocked and itunes asks for the password to an old e-mail address I have not used in 6 years. How can I authorize the song now that I don't recall that re-mail password anymore?

I don't know the answer to the first part (why you can't get to iTunes through Tiger), but regarding the second part, deauthorizing will not cause you to lose any information.  While deauthorized, you won't be able to access some information, but it won't be erased or removed.

  • Itunes can not find original song file

Suddenly my itunes can not find the song's original file.
I see that the file is on the driver but when I double click on Itunes I get this mesage:
"the song could not be used because the original file could not be found.
    Any helpers out there?
    THKS

I've been experiencing this problem for a while now. It happens with version 7.1 but it started with an earlier version of iTunes 7. I never experienced it before iTunes 7. In my experience the number of files iTunes "thinks" is missing increases with the length of time iTunes has been running between restarts (I usually just put my system to sleep overnight so it can "run" for days on end). When it first started happening I used to go and find the "missing" music file(s) and reconnect it(them). Then, one day, I found a flood of "missing" songs. I decided I had nothing to lose by stopping iTunes and restarting it. When I restarted iTunes none of my songs were missing! This indicated to me that it's the iTunes code that's active after a restart that has a bug that makes it lose track of the music files.
To check, I looked in the Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml file for songs while they were being reported as "missing", and, lo and behold, the song file locations are still there. iTunes must reread the xml file when it starts up and this cures the problem, at least in my case. (Too bad it doesn't use the file while it's running.)
I usually just play my entire library in random order. So, if a song or two disappears, I'm rarely aware of it. All I've been doing lately is stopping and starting iTunes when I feel like getting rid of the "!" scourge.

  • Itunes loses my songs

Why does itunes lose my songs? they appear one minute but gone the next? I have organize my songs enabled and copy files to folder. I have the latest version of itunes.

Glenn, there is a huge difference between the music no longer showing up in the iTunes library and the music actually being deleted from your computer. Could you do a search and confirm that the music you have labeled "deleted" is actually no longer on your hard drive? Use Windows' search function to locate music files, and either look for specific ones (if you know the file name) or for the format (.mp3, .m4a, etc.).
Just because iTunes can't see the music anymore doesn't necessarily mean it has been removed from your hard drive

  • How can I reconnect my songs with actual media files

After re-importing my 25,000 songs to Media folderthey show up as 'missing' [!] in iTunes browser. The files are there, but the browser can't 'find' them. I realize I could do this manually but with the size of my library that is a no go.
I've tried to use Song Sergeant but it refuses to work "with MY system", as their support person told me!!
    Thanks

    Transfer your purchases before syncing:
iTunes menu > Devices > Tansfer Purchases
You won't lose any songs (and nothing will get loose in your phone)
