Can I make an older iMac go wireless?

I recently was given an older iMac for my 6 yr. old daughter. It does have OSX. However, I am not very apple savy & and I was told that they do not sell the airport for the older models @ the apple store. Our house is wireless. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's a great little computer, but very limited without being able to connect to the internet.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Older iMac   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

Apple discontinued the older AirPort cards a while ago, so they won't be easy to find. You might find one through eBay, but they tend to go at a premium since they are still in demand.
Another option would be to get an external Ethernet wireless access point such as the one from D-Link. Those don't need drivers (unlike USB wireless adapters) so most any one would work as long as it's standard (802.11 b/g). If you shop around (eBay, retailer clearances, etc.) you may be able to pick one up at a decent price.
You might also ask for additional suggestions in the iMac (CRT) forums, which are the forums here specifically for the older iMacs.
Good luck.

      Thanks for your help.
First of all you need ot find out if your landlord allows you to connect to their network. Is it part of your rental agreement? Do you need a password? Do you need to pay extra for access? Do you need a password from them? As another poster points out your iMac has Wi-Fi built in. All you need to do is turn it on. Open System Preferences -> Network -> Wi-Fi and turn it on. Your apartment's wireless network should appear if it exists. If you need a password to connect you willget that from your aprtment manager IF it's incuded in your rent.
Somehow, though, I get the impression we're not talking about the same thing. Are you moving in with someone who already has the Internet and you want to use their wireless network?

  • Can no longer order an iMac with wireless KB and mouse?

    Hi,
I just figure out that when someone try to order the iMac, the only keyboard choice is wired. I think this disapear at the same time the wireless mighty mouse arrived.
    Am I wrong?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I had this problem. The stores had them in a package with the wirelesss
keyboard and mouse but they were not available on-line. I had to order on-line to get some upgrades but could not have the wireless package...Catch 22.
So when I called in my order I complained that I could not effectively get what I wanted and without much pressure I was offered a discount if I bought the wireless keyboard and mouse as extra. They knocked off £50 sterling (I'm in the UK) from the total cost. So, for about £40 more (which was the extra cost of the wireless pack in the store) I got what I wanted. With the added bonus of having a spare wired mouse and keyboard which are currently still all wrapped up in their box.
I only placed my order on the 17th and receieved it last Friday so it should be a current deal. I hope it is not too late to help you out.
    Cheers.

  • Can I make my new iMac reboot as new?

Hello I recently bought a 27" iMac and started playing with it before transfering files from my old iMac.  Is there a way to reboot my new iMac to the "Welcome" startup information so I can transfer files via their transfer prompts rather than by using Migration Assistant?

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Making older iMac wireless

I am wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions for the simplest/cheapest way to make an older imac (without internal wireless card) wireless. What I am looking for is some kind of an access point that plugs into the imac via USB, firewire or ethernet, so that the iMac can then connect to my wireless network and receive an IP and connect to the internet. Keep in mind this is an early iMac (second or third generation: candy color iMac: USB 1.0).
I am fairly competent at setting up networks. Am currently using a Linksys WRT54G router.

    Maybe something like this?

  • Can I hook use an  older iMac as an display for my Macbook Pro?

Can I use an older iMac as an display for my Macbook Pro?  The Macbook Pro has the Mini display port and the iMac has the older (larger) display port.  I am trying to have a document open on the iMac while writing a paper on the Macbook Pro.
    Thank you for your time.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can use the Mid 2011 iMac as a display for your 2011 MacBook Pro. Both have Thunderbolt, so you won't have any problem > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Buy a Thunderbolt cable and press Command and F2 keys on the iMac to enable Target Display

  • I am finding that a new business is requiring lots of files, photos and video and it seems to be slowing down my older imac. I am wondering if a 1TB mini can be used as a dedicated machine to house these files only and if I can simply keep all biz files

Will a 1TB mac mini be a good solution to separate media rich biz files from personal home type files and will the uSB3 be a problem connecting to an older 1mac?

A USB3 drive can connect to an older iMac by simply substituting a USB2 drive cable. Or enabling File Sharing between machines.
There are organizational and legal reasons why you want personal and business content separate. Since you mention USB3, may I infer you are looking at the late 2012 Mac mini? It has four, USB3 ports.
I would purchase three, identical external USB3 drives and configure two of them in a RAID 1 (mirror) configuration. This means that data that is written to drive 1, is simultaneously duplicated (mirrored) to drive 2. Drive 3 would be an additional fail-safe backup drive. Using Time Machine, back up drive 2 to drive 3. If you turn off the Mac mini at night, put drive 3 in a fireproof safe until morning when you reattach it to the mini. Rotate the USB3 port that you use for drive 3 to reduce wear.

  • How do I make my iMac g4 wireless?

I have an iMac g4 with 10.4 running. How can I make it wireless? If I can where is a good place to buy the part. I know apple does not make it anymore. Thanks for any help in advance.

iMac G4s of different ages could run different versions of the Airport Card.  If yours was only compatible with the original Airport Card, then I would just get a WiFi ethernet bridge, since it won't support 802.11g, or WPA2 encryption. Apple's UFO like Airport Extreme base stations can all function as a WiFi ethernet bridge that is easy to setup on all iMac G4s.      Some third party routers work as well, but you have to isolate which ones can run on 10.4. Those that came with Airport Extreme capability you can find an Airport Extreme card made for them, and while it is limited to 802.11g, unless you are doing major local area network traffic, or streaming to an AppleTV, 802.11g is plenty good with WPA2 encryption.    To find out if yours qualifies, use this guide to find out which iMac G4 you have:

could the launch agents failing slow the computer or they just don't work. I mean I am willing to upgrade ram but not if there is good chance it won't change speed much. Also to downgrade is it necessary to format the hard drive?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Can I use the superdrive on my older iMac to load software onto my brand new iMac?

I have a new 21.5" iMac on order, an upgrade from my late 2008 iMac, which I'm keeping. I was told by the Mac rep that I can use my older iMac's superdrive as opposed to having to purchase a separate optical drive. Is this true? If so, how does that work exactly? I very seldom need a superdrive, and only need it to install software on my new one.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Make sure both Macs are on the same network and in System Preferences on the Mac with the Superdrive go to System Preferences>Sharing and tick DVD or CD Sharing. Once the disk is inserted it should appear on the Mac without the DVD/CD drive.
For more detail in Finder look at the Help menu 'DVD or CD Sharing'.
