Can I make bootable ext disk image on USB 2.0 drive?

I would like to upgrade finally to OS X Lion. Before I do that I would like to make an image backup using something like Super Duper to an external USB 2.0 disk drive. I would like this to be a bootable image. Can I do this?

Yes, although I recommend the more intelligent Carbon Copy Cloner over Superduper just for the fact that it was first, more powerful and donationware, SD might be eaiser and offer more handholding, it's part payware.

I really do not recommend pre-2011 Intel Mac's (unless they are powerful, 4GB of RAM) to upgrade to Lion, however with a bootable clone of 10.6 (which is what your asking for) would get your machine back on 10.6 eaiser than a total rebuild and reinstall of 10.6.
Also a LOT of third party programs and older printer/scanner drivers/software/hardware may not work with Lion neither.
I do recommend to backup data off the machine, a fresh install of 10.6 then upgrade to 10.7, then install Lion programs and then return files method over the upgrade over 10.6 method.
To boot from the Carbon Copy Clone, hold th option key and select the external drive to boot from.

If you don't have a Mac that can read your OS X Installer DVD, then you have no way of putting it onto the USB drive.
Although there is PC software that will enable you to read from and write to Mac formatted drives on a PC, you cannot boot a PC from a Mac installer disc. The only possible solution would be the use of third-party PC software that can read an OS X Installer DVD restore its content to an OS X formatted USB drive. Unfortunately I have no idea if there is such an animal.
Maybe you should just order an external optical drive or a replacement drive for the defective one. You might check out macsales.com. Surely UPS delivers to the "middle of nowhere."

How to make a DVD disk image to be burned from a PC?

I need to make a DVD with DVD-SP, save a disc image, upload it have someone on a PC download it and burn it.
Is this possible? Anybody been succesful at this?

If they have a burning program that recognizes VIDEO_TS files, no problem.
You need to remove two files from VIDEO_TS first called .LAY and .LAYOUT. They are only required by DVD SP and not the final disc.
To be safe make a top level folder called NAME_OF_FILM (max 32 characters) and put VIDEO_TS in there together with an empty folder named AUDIO_TS.
Actually, DVD SP should generate this for you it will be where ever the Build folder is set to be saved in Preferences.
Don't make a Mac disk image. PCs can't read them. A .zip file or ISO (Toast makes them) is probably better.

I am trying to install Lion on my imac and it says it can't make a recovery disk

I am trying to install lion and receive a message saying it can't make a recovery disk. I am using a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. I do have bootcamp on it, but was never able to install Windows.

What happens when Lion installs is it creates a Lion Recovery Partition at the very bottom area of the drive, this is used to Command R boot into and perform Disk Utility Repairs and reinstall Lion from Apple's servers much like a 10.6 disk will.
So when you ran the Lion installer, it couldn't create this small partiiton, either because the GUID partition table (the map of your paartitions on the drive) is borked or there is data all the way to the bottom of the drive or OS X thinks there is.
You set up the bootcamp parittion, so run that and delete the Bootcamp partition as your not using it or Windows, once it's finished reboot and try installing Lion again.
I should warn you, Lion will not run your Rosetta based software or hardware drivers for external hardware, you may have to purchase all new versions. Not only that, hardware drivers may not be available for 10.7 thus rendering your third party printers, scanners etc useless.
Before you install Lion, you should consult this web page

Also you shoudl check your hardware and the makers site if there is a 10.7 compatible driver/software for them.
And once you think your ready to go to Lion, get a blank external powered drive and a free/donationware copy of Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your present (non-Filevault) 10.6 boot drive to the external drive.
Later if 10.7 doesn't work for you, simply hold the option key and boot off the 10.6 clone, use Disk Utility to Erase the entire drive (the whole drive!) and reverse clone 10.6 back onto the internal drive.

In my opinion it is the question for Microsoft because you try to use Vista feature and, as far as I know, notebook manufacturers have nothing to do with it.
To be honest for me it is pretty logic. If you want to use such disc it should be small and compact. The best disc for these purposes is USB memory stick. You can put it in every pocket and have with you.
In my opinion CD media is not so adequate for this. What you think about it?

I cannot find my disks that came with my Powerbook g4 but can I make a restore disk or recovery disk so I can restore the operating system that's on the iBook g4?

Connect the two computers using a FireWire cable. Use Target Disk Mode to clone the one drive to the other. Boot the iBook into TDM, then boot the PB normally. The iBook's drive should appear on the PB's Desktop. Use Disk Utility to erase the iBook's hard drive, then use Restore to clone the PB's drive to the iBook:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination
entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

You will only know about the hard drive when you try to access it in TDM from your other computer. If you cannot boot into TDM mode or if the drive does not appear on the new computer's Desktop then it is likely bad.
What you are thinking about as a recovery disk is the Recovery HD normally created when you install Lion or later on the computer. You boot from it as follows:
Boot Using Command+R keys:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"COMMAND" and the "R" keys together.
3. Release the keys when the Utilities Menu appears.

Recently moved into a new place and now have my external HDD plugged into my iMac as a backup.
Just went to backup my MacBook Air, which has used the drive previously, but always through USB.
Now trying to backup wirlelessly so I do not need to remove from my iMac, but got this message:

The same error message? Try hooking your backup drive to your computer and run Disk Utility Repair Disk and Repair Permissions.

You see all I need on the image are the OSX and the programs, NOT the 60GB of Free Space. Disk Utility however wants to create a 80gb image which includes 60GB of Free Space.

You'll need a second machine or an external HDD with Mac OS X installed on it.
For purposes of this procedure I'll be calling your machine the 'source' and the second machine or your external HDD the 'target'.
First either boot the source into target mode by holding down the 'T' key while it boots. Once you see the FireWire icon on the screen, let go of the 'T' key and plug the source into the target. If you're going with the external HDD route, boot your source of off your external HDD.
Now, select the drive of your source machine, and hit Apple-I to bring up the information pane. Down at the bottom (in the permissions area) you'll see a check box labeled "Ignore ownership..." Uncheck that.
Open up Disk Utility. Select the source drive and run First Aid and Repair Permissions on it.
Now, select the File menu -> New -> New Disk Image from Folder. You're going to want to hit that big "New Image" button, but don't. Trust me. It'll only cause trouble for you down the road.
Select the source drive as the source. You can leave everything else the same and click "Image".
Select the target as the destination. Click Save.
Wait for a couple of hours (depending on how much stuff you have).
When it's done, select the Images menu -> Scan image for Restore.
Select the disk image you just made and click "Scan".
When that's done you have a restorable image. Just use the restore tab to restore it.
I've done this literally hundreds of times and it's worked every single time.

when I attempt to use bootcamp and on my MBP I can not make a bootable disk image on a external Usb flash drive. I can select the windows 7 image, and the click the klocation which I want it to be put, but after I click next Boot camp crashes and I get an Error message. It asks me to reopen boot camp, which I do and attempt again, but I get an error message once more.

I did get the support software onto my 16Gb Flash drive ( I formatted correctly and I can see the support soft. within) , I then try to make the partition and it says that It cant find the required data, those aren't the exact words because my computer isn't sitting infront of me right now... but when I get home I'll attempt the steps on the list you just linked me to...

had it been obvious, I would not have asked the question. In a number of discussions here, people will often mention details that are not relevant to their goal, which is why I’d asked for clarification.
A Boot Camp partition can only be created in an internal disk, so Boot Camp can be ruled out in pursuit of your goal. (Once created internally, it won’t be bootable if it is subsequently made external.) Short of virtualizing Windows 7 in one of your four bootable OS X partitions, I don’t know the answer for how you can achieve it.

You need a proper Backup and Recovery solution. Retrospect can do both the "snapshot backups" Király noted (they're properly called Backup Sets) as well as bootable Duplicates, which some call "clones."
Saving a Duplicate of your startup disk to a FireWire drive means you can boot from the Duplicate — by selecting it in the Startup Manager — should your primary startup disk fail.

Bootable Tiger disk image (in Lion)

Just interested to know if anyone knows if it's possible to read a (bootable) disk image of a Tiger based Mac into a Lion based Mac?
I don't want to go into a really complicated business, as it's not worth it. But since I have a bootable disk image - made on Retrospect - of my old laptop (running tiger) it would interesting to be able to access it to collect old files and the like.
Any suggestions?

It's a disk image on an external disk. The disk image is a bootable copy which I used (and still can on an old Mac) open up when needed to restore past images ...... before Time Machine came in.
I did try just booting up from the external disc, but all I got was the computer opening up in single user mode. I didn't bother going any further as it's not worth the time, hence the original question. I imagine that they are indeed .dmg files, as that's the system that Retrospect (Express) used back then (2007) if my memory serves me well.

p.s. As for accessing files you'd need to re-install a Retrospect system as RS used to build back-up sets which it then used to catalogue files between systems. You of course need back-set A + back-up set B to work as one reads from the other. As for the disk image, I really must say I hadn't thought about it as normally an image is (naturally) an image of the original (files, library and the lot), which is why I wondered why it won't just read it as normal. I seem to remember that Mac also changed it's system at that time due to PowerPC and intel etc, maybe there's an issue there.
