Can I manage iPod playlists independent of iTunes?

Before iTunes 11 it was possible for me to create playlists, drag files and manage all of my iPod files independent of my iTunes playlists. Now, the only way to manage my iPod music is to do it in iTunes first and then sync. AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
For someone who has completely different playlists in iTunes than I do on my iPod, you can imagine what a nightmare it is to now manage them all in one place - I have doubled the number of playlists I have to sort through in iTunes not to mention going through additional steps to get the results I want.
Please, please, please tell me this is a settings issue and not yet another horrible change to iTunes. HELP!

Yes, it will.

My itunes account is messed up. How can I restore my playlist folders in itunes? The list's are there but the individual song titles aren't. They are only listed by album. I can only see the song titles as they are played at the top of my itunes. This makes it very difficult to find songs in my playlist.  Also when in the itunes store, I am not able to see music genre choices, or search for a song or group.

    Hi dones49,
It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -
Locate and organize your iTunes files
If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -

The Friend: Thanks from me too for that super simple fix!! I feel kinda stupid for not knowing that.
    Too bad Apple didn't:
Give it a more intuitive name than "Status Bar"... "status" is what is shown at the top of the window along with the Artist and Song Title, e.g.; how far into the song/podcast/video I've played and how much is left,
Put the keyboard commands in a more prominent place in their release notes when version 11 came out so we could more easily find the information they decided to hide in this attempt to make the desktop less cluttered and
Allow us the option of displaying the data size along with the song count and duration just beneath the playllist title. The status bar is a redundant listing of information except for the data size!  Poorly conceived!
Perhaps Apple will remedy this in a future release. For those of us who like to burn our playlists to CD, DVD and even a thumb drive this information is essential. WIthout it, we're left to guess whether a given playlist will fit on our target device.
    Thank you!

i can't find import playlist button on itunes 11

Found the answer for you today as I was looking for the answer myself.  If you go to the menu you will see a option to "Show menu bar".  Click this to get a few functions to show up.  Click on file and in the drop down menu you will find "Library".  Hover over that to get the import option to show up!  Hope this helps!

  • Can't sync iPod after upgrading to iTunes 11

I had a Windows XP computer with an older version of  iTunes which I synced (by cable) with my iPod Classic (version 2.0).  The XP computer recently crashed and I bought a Windows 8.1 computer on which I installed iTunes 11, and authorized the new computer.  I managed to restore my music to the new computer from backup, but now when I sync, newly purchased tracks are not transferred to the iPod. Also I can't seem to rip from CDs anymore, the "Import" window doesn't open when I put a music CD in the drive.  The tracks in my playlist purchased from iTunes have a "cloud" icon next to them, which I believe means they haven't been redownloaded to my computer but are on the iCloud servers.      I don't understand iTunes 11.  Does iCloud stop devices from syncing by wire?   I don't want iCloud or any new features, I just want my old functions to work!  Help!

Okay! Thanks! Followed the link to that threat and figured out the problem. I had moved iTunes to a sub-folder in Applications (for grouping together as a stack in the dock, something stacks should have been able to do anyway) and when it installed the new version it didn't check where the old one was, it just dropped the new one in Applications.
Everyone else who has this problem double check and make sure you don't have two different versions of iTunes: one in the applications folder and another that your dock shortcut directs to.

  • Old pc crashed how can I upload ipod playlist and save to new pc?

How can I upload my playlist off my IPod to a new pc?

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod or iPhone to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • How can I manage the audio-books in iTunes ?

Hello, this problem is pretty annoying: I don't know why I can't see the audio-books located in my iPod in iTunes, because I couldn't see the Audio-Books section under devise, so I can't manage my audio-books in my iPod. How can I do it?

The tabbed sections of the device don't necessarily tally with sections in iTunes. You'll find that Audiobooks appears as a playlist under music. Sync from here. See also http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/audiobooks.asp

  • IPod Playlist Unstuck in iTunes 7.0

    1) Driving me crazy a bit, as this is something that I just know has to be there, somewhere, but I just can't find it.
    2) All prior versions had an option allowing you to keep your iPod (mine is a Shuffle) Playlist in the Source column even when the iPod was not mounted.
    3) The Help mentions this, says that if the iPod allows it then iTunes does also. They even have a name for the feature, which I'm not bothering to go back and re-discover.
    4) Problem: I can't find it and can't turn it on. I did have a Shuffle Playlist displayed there right after installing and firing up IT7, but it was totally wrong; instead of showing the right playlist it was merely showing the same thing as the last playlist selected. In other words, although it appeared to be selected, it actually was not. Besides, as soon as I mounted up the Shuffle and started playing around with it, and discovered the the playlist deep-sixed itself as soon as you unmounted, it was no longer stuck there in Source.
    5) So — does anyone know the story on this? If that feature was overlooked or ommitted, that'll get an immediate Feedback rocket from me. In fact, I might switch back to 6.0.4 or 5, as I use that feature in iPod and podcasts loading a lot more than I probably would use the new geewhizzes like CoverFlow and gapless.

  • Can't get iPod to sync with iTunes

I managed to back-up all my music from my ipod onto my harddrive and upload it into iTunes. Now I have the problem of syncing iTunes with my iPod!
I have Windows 8 a 5th Gen Nano that is at least 4 years old.
I can plug my ipod into the computer and it instantly recognises it on the E drive. As soon as I open iTunes I get a message and the E drive disappears as if I had never plugged in the iPod. I have installed and re-installed iTunes and rebooted my laptop. The message says an iPod has been detected but not identified properly (there is a ! in a triangle).
What do I do to rectify this issue?

Thanks I found this on the discussion board. It solved the problem. I can't find the original source anyway this below explanation did the trick. It was a file that I needed to install and this did the trick.
    Open File Explorer, go to:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
    Afterwards, look for the file
    “usbappl64.???“
It'll be the one labelled as "Setup Information"
    Right click the file.
Click install. It should only take about a minute. Afterwards it'll say that it was successful.
Restart your computer, and your iPod should sync as normal.

  • Can't import iPod playlists into iPhone!

I recently upgraded to an iPhone gs and am trying to import an iPod playlist created in an earlier version of iTunes. However the new version of iTunes will not recognize the playlist. Help please!

You probably need to convert them to MP4 files. You can use MPEG streamclip to do that.

  • How to manage iPod playlists?

    Hi everybody,
this is my first message here and I'd like to ask you sorry for my poor english (I'm italian)
BTW , I'd like to know how to manage the playlists I create on my 4th gen. iPod. Infact ,after creating a new playlist on my iPod , when I connect it to the pc , iTunes recognizes these playlists but I'm not able to save or copy them. I've also tried in creating a new iTunes playlist , but it's impossible to drag and drop songs included in iPod playlist to the new one. I'm only able to copy song from iTunes playlists to iPod . But not the reverse.
Please note I manage my library in manual mode and I've iTunes and iPod Updater updated to the last versions.
I'm really asking myself which is the meant of being able to create playlists on the iPod if , when I'm at home, it's impossible to save them.
Thanks in advance for every suggestions.

Well don't put it on "Auto update" unless all the
songs on your ipod are on the PC. You'll loose what
you have if there not on the PC
Yes, I know. By the way iTunes in "Auto update" mode will try to update all the 20.000 songs existing in the library...;-)
    Thanks again
