Can I migrate RAM to new memory module?

Sorry very novice user. I bought this Mac a year ago with only two memory slots with only one 512GB memory module installed. I recently purchased and installed memory (2 - 1GB memory modules), and it didn't start up. I assumed that the "start up" stuff was on the 512 that I took out.
Aaah, so I put the 512 module back in and now I am running with 1.5GB. What am I doing???? Help me please. I want to copy the "stuff" from the 512 to the 1gb that is in the other memory slot currently, so that I can take out the 512, and run with 2gb of memory. Is this possible?
I am so confused?!?!?

Hi jojotagmaulgrl;
I concur with Allan Jones.
I would like to suggest that you try the other 1GB card in place of the one that is working and see what happens.
If what I think is going happen does boot with only 500 GB. Then that 1GB card is bad and you will have to return it for a new one.
If it boots and say 1.5GB then the first time one of the cards probably was seated correct. I would try once more to see if both work.
Please let us know what happens.
Allan

  • New memory modules possible on MS 6119?

Can someone help me out with this small problem?
I have a MS 6119 motherboard with 64 mb ram. I want to upgrade to 256MB with 2 modules 128MB SDRAM PC133. Is this possible because in the manual it only says PC100 is possible...

I am in the same boat as you.  I have a MS-6119 motherboard in which I am using a PC133 SDRAM 128 meg memory stick that works fine.  This stick has 8 chips on it.  I just purchased an AZENRAM PC133 SDRAM 128 meg memory stick that will only register 64 meg at bootup.  This module has only 4 chips and will only run at half it's labeled value.  You can run PC133 ram in a PC100 motherboard but, you will need a memory module that has 8 or 16 chips on it to get the full ram value.

  • How to export imovie09 to an external harddrive prior to adding a new memory module?

Had to add a memory module to increase memory so I can run Lion, but can't back-up all imovies to external hard drive as required. What to do?

You can import the photos into iPhoto by using the iPhoto File menu "Import to Library."
The default location for the iPhoto Library is username/Pictures/iPhoto Library
You should only work with the library using iPhoto (i.e., don't attempt to open the library and work with the files inside directly from Finder).

  • After installing new memory modules cannot boot windows

I have a G60-458DX with 4GB of RAM; (two 2GB modules) running Vista.  Spec's say that I can install up to 8GB.
After I installed two 4GB modules Windows Vista would not boot.  The power light was on but the software would not boot.  Could not turn off the power until I uplugged power cord and pulled the battery.  Put the battery and the two 2GB modules back in and had no problem with booting up the software.  The modules I tried to install were new (never used) and the same specifications as the 2GB modules.  Is there any way I can check the new modules?

    Hi,
If you check Page 52 of your Maintenance & Service Guide this would also indicate a maximum of 4Gb as the largest modules specified are 2GB for each slot.
Definetely worth checking further, but I have a feeling that this apparent 4Gb limit is the problem.
    All the best,

  • Can i add RAM to new iMac 21 after purchase?

I'm about to buy a new iMac 21" and wanted to know if I can add RAM later if I want to.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can, but it's very difficult and you will void warranty, so it's better not to do that and buy the iMac with the amount of memory you think you will need

  • How can I migrate data to new Mac Pro with only 1 monitor

I am ready to set up my new Mac Pro.  I know how to migrate my files from my G5 using Firewire and making the new computer a target disk.  My problem is, I have only 1 monitor.  Is there an easy way around this, OR of not, can I use my Macbook Pro just a monitor and if so how?

If you make the new computer a FireWire Hard drive, the only thing on its monitor will be the firewire symbol. You don't need a monitor to see that.
But if you did, you could start the new computer up first, look at the firewire symbol, get a warm fuzzy feeling, disconnect the  monitor and plug it into the old computer to make the transfers.

  • Can't upgrade RAM on new Macbook Pros?

I'm preparing to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have been told that the RAM that comes with the book is the RAM you get. No upgrade possible because the RAM modules are soldered into place. Is that so? I've always upgraded our computers to the max. Thanks in advance.

    That is indeed so.
There still appears to be one model (13" Mid 2012) that is still available that has upgradable RAM.

  • Can't xfer programs to new memory card?

I've got a number of programs on my N82 and I just recently bought an 8gb minisdhc.  I used the content copier to make a backup of my old memory card, then inserted the new one and restored it.  It successfully moves all of the files, but it doesn't allow the actual programs to run.
The program that I really want to get working again is my Garmin Mobile XT.  I've been looking around and I can't find the discs for it, it was expensive and I'd love to have a way to move it from the old card to the new one.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Don't bother using the content copier, use the card reader to copy the content of the old memory card, including hidden and system objects, to your desktop. Format the new card in the phone, then put it in the card reader and copy all the stuff, including hidden and system objects, over to it. The applications on it should now work.

  • Can not migrate user to new machine

I'm trying to transfer a user from a g4 400 laptop to a new ibook.
When i get to the migration assistant and connect the laptop via firewire here's what happens:
    i get a spinning ball.
at first it would see the disk and attempt to list the info and it looked like it hung at the application list.
i ran every disk checking app i had on the laptop and now it wont even get to the migration check list!
i've just cloned the disk and mounted it to an external drive via the resotre feature in disk utility. the restore has not completed.
in the mean time any help is appreciated

I was able to copy the whole Time Machine folder over to an external hard drive. It still wasn't showing up when I tried the Migration Assistant. After reading Pondini's article: http://pondini.org/TM/18.html, I realized I was copying it wrong, but I did not have an extra drive on hand to reformat, etc. By chance I opened the Time Machine folder and mounted the sparse image and then tried the Migration Assistant and it magically appeared and worked flawlessly. Hope this helps someone else.

  • Memory module not recognized on K7T266 Pro2

    Hello.
I have a computer with only 256 Mb of RAM and I wanted to add 256 Mb but my second memory module of 256 Mo is not recognized whereas it  functions very wel.
    Here are details :
    - Mother board : MSI K7T266 Pro2 (ms-6380 v2.0) with 3 memory slots
    - BIOS : Award Modular W6380F1 V3.0 071902
    - Memory module of origin : Samsung 256 Mo PC2100 (2 Sides)
    - New memory module : Corsair Value 256 Mo PC3200 (1 Side)
    Configs Tested :
    - Samsung only : OK
    - Corsair only : OK
    - Samsung in Slot 1 and Corsair in Slot 2 or 3 : the computer starts but with only 256 Mb of RAM (in this config, Everest Ultimate Edition finds both memory modules but also only 256 Mb of RAM)
    - Corsair in Slot 1 and Samsung in Slot 2 or 3 : the computer starts with a blank screen and several beeps.
Can somebody help me so that my second memory module is recognized correctly ?  I specify that I did not modify the BIOS.
    I thank you by advance.

I'm no memory expert, but from being around here I've learned that there is more to a stick of RAM than the MHz speed. If timings etc were perfectly the same for the 3200 and the 2100, the system (the Northbridge) could simply set down memory speed to the slowest of the sticks.
However, I also know that many have been helped by entering BIOS, Advanced Chipset..., and go to the subtitle Memory timings controlled by..., and change from By SPD to By User. Then manually set down to 133 (266 effectively). This is if you absolutely want these two sticks.

  • Memory modules and hard drive not recognized

I removed and reinserted the factory installed Satellite L505D-LS5007 laptop hard drive and memory modules just as practice for installing a hard drive upgrade and an 8GB memory upgrade. The problem is obviously with the memory and not with the hard drive.
After the first practice try, one memory module was recognized. Also for a few seconds after the first practice try, I ran the PC with the battery installed, but no memory installed. I did not look in the User's Guide first to see that I should have removed the battery before removing the memory.
Now the System Indicator Lights for the HDD Activity and Memory Card Reader do not light up. The PC turns on and the display is solid black with no messages.
Before buying new memory modules, what possible ways might there be to get the PC to recognize the factory installed memory modules and hard drive again?

When troubleshooting, I always change one variable at a time. I would hate to miss a solution by being in a hurry. In this case, you may have damaged either the RAM or the RAM slot. I would stick with the Toshiba specifications for the RAM, making sure it is the correct size, speed and type recommended. I also recommend that when you replace the RAM that both modules be from the same manufacturer, size, and specification. Try one RAM module in one slot and then the other. And then try both RAM modules in both slots. After the testing you should be able to figure if this is a RAM problem or a RAM slot problem.
In the case of hard drives, the real test is whether or not the Bios sees the hard drive. If the Bios doesn't see the hard drive, it's not going to work. The Bios should see the hard drive whether or not the hard drive is partitioned, formatted or has data on it. My experience has been that many Toshiba laptops will work fine with larger capacity hard drives provided they are the same speed in RPMs, have the same interfacing connection and physically the same size.
Again, prior to doing any work on your computer, make sure that both the AC power has been disconnected and the battery has been removed. Be careful out there. A blown repair job by a non-Toshiba tech is NOT covered under warranty.

  • I am going to replace  the memory module, will I loose the existing stored memory

I have a imac desktop with one memory module,, would like to insert 2 new memory modules,, will I loose stored memory

No. Nothing is stored in RAM when the computer's off, and you'll need to turn it off while upgrading its RAM.
RAM and drive space aren't the same. Back up the contents of the internal drive.

  • Installing new memory resort to clean startup?

This maybe a very obvious question but here goes anyway...I'm about to upgrade my MacBook Pro from the standard 4GB memory to 8GB. My question is whether the switch will erase all of my current settings, apps & files on my computer and revert back to factory settings or 'Clean StartUp'.
I'm not worried about loosing any of my files, apps and/or settings,  I''m asking because I want to start fresh after I switch to the 8GB...I'm just not sure whether this will happen automatically or whether I will have to manually restore back to factory settings once the new memory is installed.
Also, any tips or advice to look out for when re-installing apps that have pre-existing serial numbers would also be very helpful (i.e Microsoft Office)
    Thank You!!
    M

    shmonz,
no, replacing your memory modules will not affect the contents of your hard disk. The main concern is ensuring that static electricity is discharged before handling your memory modules, both new and old, since static electricity can functionally destroy them. Occasionally new memory modules exhibit defects that weren’t caught at the factory, so if you notice programs misbehaving after you install the new memory, try reïnstalling the old memory to see if the misbehavior disappears. If it does disappear, then contact the memory vendor to obtain replacements for your new memory.

  • Will a Presario V5120NR accept ECC (vs non-ecc) memory modules?

I cannot find anything down to that that particular level in the specs on the HP website for this particular model. I know it is DDR PC2700 333, but that is a much as I can find/glean. The original memory modules currently installed in the machine (2 256mb) don't indicate either on their stickers.
    Thanks!

    Non-Ecc only. Max 2GB.
