Can i mirror macbook pro to Apple TV with lid shut?

I've just bought apple tv and would like to use on an external tv which has apple tv running, however it seems i can only show the display on both machines, i would like to just use the tv and close the lid on the macbook, without it sleeping!
Is this possible?
Thanks

Hello 1moresolo,
One suggestion I would give you is to try pressing the key combination Control-Shift-Eject. This should turn off your MacBook Pro's display. Otherwise, try using the screen brightness keys to bring it all the way down.
On my MacBook Air, turning the brightness all the way down turns off the display.
Best of luck!

  • Macbook Pro won't sleep when lid shuts or hit sleep

    Hey Everyone,
So after the latest update my Macbook pro no longer immediately sleeps after shutting the lid. It also won't sleep when 'sleep' is hit in the apple menu. It's actually really annoying as I need it for security.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

    Try Reset SMC.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Can I mirror MacBook pro mid-10 to apple tv with something when internet in not available

I have a apple tv 3 and a MacBook pro mid -10. all I want to do is mirror to a projector, sometimes I don't have internet. I do have an airstash but the apple tv will not connect to the network, had the same problem with a wireless hot spot. What can I use to connect to the apple tv?

You are correct about mirroring upto a point.. (ref: my previous comment from the apple support engineer..  _ I will quote directly.  The Apple  operating system will support Airplay {iincluding mirroring} if it thinks the computer can perorm the task} where the software on the apple TV is version 5.x...
However I pointed out that you can still send movies..etc. to the appletv, again assuming your appletv software is 5.x..
I wish my apple tv did not upgrade.... lesson from this..  keep version 5.x on your apple TV. never upgrade.. too painfull.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/25190502#25190502
Your post of a link is helpfull but for public consumption and an official statemnt from apple, not in reality for version 5.x on apple tv3.
but.. my comments for version 5.x will be mute if apple tv v 5.x is not used.
    Hope I helped somewhat.

  • Video lags like crazy when mirroring Macbook Pro to Apple TV

So, the Apple TV is wireless, and youtube works fine, as long as i use it within the Apple Tv. However, when I mirror my Macbook Pro to the Apple TV, and play a youtube video or any other video on my computer, it lags; it lags a LOT!!!
    How do I fix this?
I've heard about configuring the internet speeds from 5ghz to 2.4ghz. Will this work? and if so, HOW to I configure these settings on my Macbook or Apple TV?
Please help! I got the Apple TV because we got rid of Foxtel, and I've got some movies on my hard drive, and TV shows, and I'd like to watch them, but the lag makes the movies and tv shows unwatchable!!
    Please help!
    Thanks in advance

Switching between 2.4 & 5 GHz may bring mixed blessings. 5 GHz will likely avoid most interference but being a higher frequency is more easily blocked by walls and other objects 2.4 GHz is able to pass straight through. It therefore depends on your location which frequency would be best for you.
Switching would be carried out in your router settings (assuming it supports both frequencies).
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • HT201343 Cannot Mirror MacBook Pro to Apple TV

I own a MacBook Pro Mid 2012 and a 3rd Generation Apple TV and both have the latest software updates. I can no longer see the AirPlay icon on my computer and I can no longer select that in the display options of settings. Any help on this one??

    Hello there, tpeeler88.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some basic steps for troubleshooting your issue:
About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X

    Particularly of note:
Mac and Apple TV are on the same network, but no AirPlay Mirroring menu appears
Your Apple TV may be asleep. Simply press a button on your Apple TV remote to wake it up. After a few seconds, the AirPlay Mirroring menu extra will appear.
Make sure your Apple TV has the current software update installed.
Make sure you have the "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" checked.

  • Why Does Retina MacBook Pro (2012) Suddenly Hibernate With Lid Open?

I'd like to know why my Retina MacBook Pro (2012) at certain times suddenly go into Hibernate mode when I'm actively using it with the lid open and what I can do to prevent this.
I know this is hibernate because of what I see in the Console logs and the fact that I can't trigger a wake by using the keyboard/trackpad/mouse.  Only the power button causes it to wake up.
This usually happens when I wake it from sleep and plug it into an external monitor via HDMI to HDMI connection.   The lid is open and I use both displays.    This happens about 30 seconds to a minute after I wake from sleep.  At the time I'm not plugged into the power supply because I believe it's generally a good idea to let the batter drain and the recharge it.  The last time this happened it was about 35% to 40% charged.
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:    MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacBookPro10,1
      Processor Name:    Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:    2.6 GHz
      Number of Processors:    1
      Total Number of Cores:    4
L2 Cache (per Core):    256 KB
      L3 Cache:    6 MB
      Memory:    8 GB
    Software:
OS X Yosemite (all latest updates installed)

This happened again at about 31% power, again unplugged.   Previously, I had plugged in the power before pressing the power button, but this time I pressed the power button before plugging in.  The display showed me the out of power icon.  Only on plugging it back in was I able to power up the laptop again.
Is it possible there's a bug either with the displayed power or how remaining power is detected?

  • MacBook Pro will not sleep with lid open, but now solved, very odd.

I bought a 2.4 GHz MBP about a week ago, as soon as I got it home I reinstalled the OS and zero-out the drive. Everything appears to work perfect until I noticed that the MBP will not sleep with the lid open.
    But...
    Close the lid, it sleeps.
Select sleep from menu, it sleeps.
Let the battery drain down with lid open, laptop sleeps.
Whent thru painful troubleshooting process, reseting things, permissions, what is installed, running programs...blah blah blah, nothing no difference.
So, backup the drive using superduper to external firewire and reinstall all over again, just like i did when i first got home, except I did not let it connect to the internet. I went thru and setup everything then connected and performed each update, one at a time looking for what might hinder the sleep process.
And the result is a big fat zero.
Same install process as i did the first time, and same updates as the first time. But now the laptop sleeps perfectly.
Gotta love computers, so very consistant
Just my .02 input on this wacky issue.

Try trashing these 3 .plist preferences and reboot. Reset your Energy Saver preferences.
    HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration > com.apple.AutoWake.plist & com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
Also, look at your system logs in your Console application and see what is causing the "wake event." It could be hardware-related. Do you have any external devices attached, such as a mouse or hub? I've seen Bluetooth problems with wireless BT mice.

  • I can connect my macbook pro to my tv with a VGA cable no problem. When I try to connect it to my tv with and HDMI it does not work, any solutions? It flickers once when first connect it, looking like it recognizes it, then it doesn't.

I am having trouble getting my macbook to connect to my tv. When I connect my mac to the tv via VGA I have no problem. It detects it right away. I just purchased a HDMI cable because I didn't want to have to use speakers when connect to my TV and it will not detect the computer. The HDMI is a good cable because it connects our apple tv to the tv, so I know it works.
When I connect the HDMI cable to the tv and my computer, the screen on my tv flickers once and it seems like it is connected. It then flickers one more time about 5 seconds after like it disconnects.
When I use my VGA it gives me an arrangement tab in the displays, I do not get that when I plug my HDMI in. I get nothing. Is there something else I could do?

Never mind, I solved it.  Didn't know the converter needed a power source to operate (duh!)  Now I have that, it works just fine.......

  • Macbook Pro won't sleep with lid closed problem sorted!

I have experienced and read about many other people having the problem of not being able to put the macbook to sleep propery, and opening your bag to find it is boiling hot and still awake... i have tried all of the solutions posted on this forum such as resetting the PRAM, emptying the cache and so on and nothing has worked until now.
So for any of you out there experiencing this problem, i reccomend you this website which gave me the solution to my problem anyway, and i feel is well worth a try for you too as it is a harmless operation and is easily reviersible if it does not work.

i really hope this works for you as it did for me, and am posting this because of the anguish the problem has caused me over the last few weeks not being able to find a solution...  Good luck with solving

this worked for a month but now it is back to its old state. When i close the lid the keys dim and the screen shuts off, and the sleep light inluminates a steady glow however the laptop is still awake. I have noticed it will sleep if it is unplugged from the power, however if i have the charger plugged in it will stay awake. Can anyone please help me out?

I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.  The movie plays fine on the macbook if I'm not trying to airplay.  The airplay works fine if I'm not trying to play a movie from the superdrive.  I think my apple TV is Gen 2.

If you get a checkerboard pattern it's because Apple block Airplay Mirroring of protected media.

  • Mirroring Internet from MacBook Pro to apple TV

Im thinking of buying the latest Apple TV, and want to replace cable. Between Itunes, Netflix and HuluPlus, I would have almost everything minus a few shows. If I'm watching something on the Internet on my MacBook Pro (running Lion), can I mirror it to my Apple TV? That was something the older model couldn't do, and if it still can't, I'll just stick with my Roku player.

Mirroring from your MAc to ATV(2nd, 3rd gen) is coming in the next OS X(10.8) update and should only be $29 bucks. I and numerous other people want this feature. Sadly your going to have to wait until Mid summer for it. I've personally already ditched cable.
