Can I move hard drives from one Mac Pro to another?

I have two mid-2010 Mac Pros that I work with daily - one 8-core on 10.7.3 and one 12-core on 12.7.4.  I would like to take all of the drives out of one Mac Pro and put them in the other and vice versa, essentially trading their content.  It probably sounds pointless, but I would like to build the more powerful one out from scratch, and right now the less powerful one is nearly empty.
Can I simply shut off both machines and swap all of the drives in one for all of the drives in the other?  I would keep them in the same bays in the machine I'm trading them with, but I'm unsure if I will screw something else up.

I've moved drives from a Mac Pro 1,1 to a 5,1 and they were able to boot the newer Mac, but to ensure that the OS was configured for the newer machine, I ran the appropriate combo updater once the drive was installed. If you're planning to stick with the drive rotation, doing that shouldn't hurt and might help even though the machines are of the same vintage. Note, however, that some commercial software keys in on machine specifics and/or the serial number to prevent piracy, so swapping drives can cause other problems.

  • Moving a hard drive from one Mac Mini to another to create a twin Mini Mac

I have been a PC user since before the stone age, or atleast since the comadore 64, Then I upgraded to a PC with an actual hard drive. It was huge, 12 MB!
along the road I had purchased 3 Mac laptops. All were new and I just never got used to either so I ended up selling both. About 6 years ago I got an iPhone. I have had ipods since they came out and I liked the data integration. Then an appleTV with a HD now 3 more apple TV 3s. Got an iPad 2 followed by an iPad 3 . Last fall my 2 year old 1500 dollar sony lap top with an i7 processor just would not power up at all, It was a nice PC but to be honest I used to be a Sony fan byt after losing 3 out of 4 laptops, and reading about Apples Intel processors, I thought I would try one more time. What a terriffic way to wean off of windows. I am running OSX Maverics with windows 8.1 on bootcamp. I still need windows for a few programs I am running.
One of my biggest thrills is the amount of inexpensive and even free software available on a Mac. And when a new OS comes out, I dont nmeed to fork up a minimum of 2 to 400 dolars to upgrade. Most microsoft software is very expensive.
Im saying all that to say this,
I want/need one more computer in my shop. Prior to my Mac purchase I had 2 PCs running with Windows 8-8.1 Lots o people bitched about the huge change from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 but personally I love it. Its actually more like a mac now than windows. With  running a SSD Windows 8.1 is very fast.
So when I got my Mac Mini with a 1TB hard drive, I took my 250 gb SSD out of my Sony and reformated it. Used Copy clone to clone the Mac OS to the SSD. Very fast and perfect copy. (since then I purchased Copy clone and every day at 11:30 PM CC copyies my SSD Mac Partition to the original HD.
I still havent completely figured how to do the same with my Boot Camp partition. but I purchased Win Clone. There is a fairly long process to seting up the samy system as I have for cloning my mac which is as easy as copying a folder.
    Sorry for rambeling
Here is my question. Now that I have a perfectyly cloned hard drive of the actujal hard drive I use inmy Mac Mini, I want to purchase another mac mini, 2012 same as mine. I have an i7 but to save a little I may go with an I5. Can I take that cloned hard drive and just plug it into my new Mac Mini and Viola I have two computers set up perfectly for me when it only took a few minutes. (if this is possible why would anyone ever buy a PC again. I realize a Mac Mini is not the most powerful computer out there, But as tech goes, Its about the most powerful Desk top I have ever owned. I have a secone 120GB SSD that I could then copy both OS systems to. I save all my data extrernally via USB 3 or Firewire 800 to a Promise DS 4600 with 2-3tb hard drives and room for 2 more. I mirrior these right now and have plenty of storage for me
I will use a 1 TB external drive for my shop mac,
Truthfullyu if this works, My mini macs can keep procreating other mini macs all the same configuration
Something I just never could conceve before with a PC. Each PC setup was its own Labor of love and hate. and as much backing up you do, forgfet it, Its still a major deal when one crashes! Hope I didnt run on too long
    Thanks

Can I take that cloned hard drive and just plug it into my new Mac Mini and Viola I have two computers set up perfectly
    Yes.

  • Can I move an SSD from one MacBook Pro to another?

I have a late 2011 MBP but am getting the latest MBP today. I have a 500 GB SSD in my current MBP and 8 GB RAM? Can I just move the SSD and RAM from the old MBP to the new one?

I just did this - moved a late 2011 (15") to a mid 2012 (non-retina).  In my case the RAM would not transfer (2012 machine needed faster RAM than 2011) but the SSD did transfer.

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.

  • Can I move/copy songs from one itunes account to another itunes account on the same iMac?

Can I move/copy songs from one itunes account to another itunes account on the same iMac?

You move the song files to /Users/Shared/ and then into iTunes from the other Mac OS X user account.
If you want to change the iTunes Store account associated with them, you need to redownload them from that account.

  • Can I transfer a hard drive from one macbook pro laptop to another?

I have a 2009 Macbook pro with a cracked screen and a messed up track pad (laptop A), but a fully functional hard drive. I have another 2009 Macbook pro (laptop B) with a blown hard drive, but everything else seems to be fine.
I removed the blown hitachi 320 hard drive from laptop B and set it aside. Then I removed the seemingly good Seagate 500 hard drive from laptop A and put it into laptop B. When I turn on Laptop B with the hard drive in it I get the folder with the question mark screen.
HELP. I am not tech savvy at all. But I can follow directions. Thanks.

*Please let me know if you need additional information from me.

Restart the computer with the Option key held down.
If you see the drive, click on it and then select it in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
If you don’t, insert a Mac OS X install DVD, press C if needed, and either repair the drive or install an OS onto it.

  • How can I move desktop items from one Mac to another?

The screen on my old Mac laptop is physically broken. I bought a new Mac laptop. I can hook the two via a firewire cable and access the old Mac's hard drive, but I can't figure out how to access the files on my old desktop so that I can move them over to the new Mac. How can I do this?

First, in the future, try to avoid storing files or folders on the desktop; it can create slowdowns.
Second, your files should be in Macintosh HD/Users/yourname/Desktop. If you can navigate to that folder, you should be able to grab and copy them.

  • Can I take the old hard drive from a Mac Pro G5 and put it into a Mac Pro Dual Xeon?

    Hello,
I have an old Mac Pro G5 that still runs fine but the video card is bad so you can't see anything. Can I take the hard drive out of the G5 and put it into the Mac Pro Xeon without losing the data on it?
    Thanks!

Even if I go from the hard drive on the G5 to the next generation up from the G5 and put in that hard drive into that next generation up from the G5? Isn't the mounting nearly the same?
The storage bays are physically different from those in a G5. G5's had two bays in ther upper reat of the chassis, the Mac Pros have four slots running front-to-rear two thirds of the way up the chassis.
But as The Hatter says, you can use the G5 drives but may need to "manage" the data transfers.

  • Can I boot a pulled hard drive from a Mac Pro on an external dock?

I have a 2008ish Mac Pro that has a dead video card and a few other problems.  Luckily, the hard drive is still functioning.  Is it possible to pull the drive and boot it using an external dock in order to image the drive so I can use it on another computer?

    Yes.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means an external drive. Source means the docked drive.

  • How can I move redeemed software from one mac to another

I work in a Higher Education establisment in the uk.  We have purchased multiuser licenses for various apps including Final Cut Pro X.  Past experience has led me to ask this question......  How do I uninstall software software redeemed from the App Store on one lab of macs and re-install it on another lab of macs  ?

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
That is a question that you should probably be asking of the folks at Apple from whom you received the licenses, since they are the folks in the know about the legal remifications involved.

  • Can i move a project from one mac to another

I have a MacBook Pro and an iMac. I would like to move a book I created on my MacBook Pro to my iMac. They are both running the most  up to date iOS and software updates. Could someone please walk me through the steps?
    Thanks

Books can't be copied between libraries, only Events and Albums.
Therefore you'll have to copy the entire library to your iMac and operate it as a separate library.  So rename the library to something like "Book Library" before you copy it to the Pictures folder on your iMac.  Then you can switch between libraries by launching iPhoto with the Option key held down.

I have a new itunes account sand want to move my downloads to it. I have been using another family members account and they now have an ipad that they want to download their oown stuff to without mine appearing. Is there an easy way to do it?

No. You can delete it from their iTunes library and make a new one, but it'll remain tied to that iTunes Store account.

  • How can I move my pix from one photoshop version to another?

I have Photoshop Album Starter Ed 3 downloaded in Jan 2007 which currently has all my pix (only about 50).  Last Aug, a tech downloaded PhotoDeluxe 2 while doing some work on my computer.  I have been unable to transfer the pix from the Starter Ed to the PhotoDeluxe.  I just purchased Elements 7 and want to move the pix to that application and delete the 2 older Photoshops.  I keep running into file path problems.  I have tried to copy all the pix to a CD and then reload in the PhotoDeluxe catalog but it never works.  Before I load the Elements 7 I want to be sure of being able to transfer all my pix. This may be a simple problem to solve but I admit I am still uneducated in some aspects of computer use.  Please help if you can.

No. You can delete it from their iTunes library and make a new one, but it'll remain tied to that iTunes Store account.
