Can I move MobileSync to a hard disk other than startup volume?

I have been told many times by others 'in the know' that you have to keep certain files on the start-up volume. However, I have 2 internal HDs on my iMac, and the SSD (start up volume) is quite small - only 250GB. The other drive is 1 TB and I have about 15 TB of externals available via Lightning connection. The problem is that the internal SSD is continually filling up, and since I have several mobile devices I am synching with iTunes, they are gobbling up tons of disk space on the startup volume. Is it possible to move MOBILE SYNC to a different drive? There is nothing in 'preferences' for mobile sync that can specify the volume where these files should be stored. They are taking up almost 85GB of disk space. My temptation right now is to clone the 1TB internal over to an external drive, then clone the SSD internal over to the 1TB internal, and make that 1TB internal drive the new startup volume, but it would require reformatting and reinstalling operating system software, since there isn't any on that drive.
I am sort of 'stuck' because when I setup a replacement iPhone on Monday from a backup of the previous phone (that had a defective antenna), about 100 recordings in the RECORDER APP were not restored to the new iPhone, and I need to dig through some iPhone backups to try to find one that might have them on it. I hate to lose some of those very valuable recordings from a one-week intensive graduate seminar.  Any suggestions for pruning the startup volume?
Disk Inventory X is showing only 7.2GB of open space and 225.8GB full on the SSD startup volume.  Here are the big space 'hogs:'
Users -  168.5 GB  (library 151.3GB; movies 15GB, which is odd, since all of the movies are stored externally.) In 'application support, MobileSync is taking up 82.5GB and Mail is taking up 47.9GB. (some of this mail goes way back, and needs to be archived, but I am not sure if that possibility exists in current OS)
Applications - 16.5 GB
Library  - 11.5GB
iMac  - intel (3 yrs old)
OSX 10.9.5
iPadAir
'the new iPad'
iPhone 5S
various other mac devices...

Well iTunes itself takes up virtually no space. I believe what you are suggesting is a move of your music files. Now these files can be moved to another drive and iTunes will act just like normal. The catch is that your music files pretty much have to be in one place. If you already have all your music stored in the My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music folder than you should be good. If you do not its a little trickier. In your preferences menu of iTunes under the advanced tab there are the options to "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and to "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library". You will want both of these checked. Then under the advanced tab (The one not in the preferences menu) There is an option to consolidate library. This will copy all the music in your library not in the iTunes folder to the iTunes folder. Thus you will want to delete duplicated when the process is over. (If your drive is too slim on space for this opperation... then I don't know what to tell you.) With all your music in the iTunes folder just drag and drop said folder onto the new drive. Then under the advanced tab in preferences the first option is to change the location of your iTunes music library. Simply change it to where you have stored your library on the new drive and you will be set to go.

  • Issues with Catalogs in Organiser when photos on hard disk other than C:

    Hello Folks;
    I face the following issue with PSE7 :
    the Catalog function does not work when I try to import pictures located on any other hard disk different from C: disk.
    In other words, the following happens :
    1) in the Organiser, I create a new Catalog (on C: disk or on F: disk)
    2) I import pictures located in a directory on disk F:
    3) when I try to review the "cataloged" images one by one  , PSE7 gives the message that he has lost the connection to the images and a window opens asking to RECONNECT the files;
    4) I then browse to the right directory , find the files and try to reconnect  back to the original image (that was not moved to another place nor renamed !) the system does not reconnect te picture with the catalog
    5) in short : PSE7 is unusable when pictures are not located on C: disk
    I contacted the support (since I ahve a legal version , yes !) but they seem to consider this normal ; catalog and pictures must be on the same disk drive they told me . Unbelievable !
    This surprises me because : with PSE4 (my former version) , this worked withiout any problem !
    I consider this as a ral software bug, isn't it ?
    I am still in touch with Adobe's support but it takes time .. and still no solution ..
    Did someone face the same issue ? Suffering in group is less painfull as anyone knows .. ;-)
    Any solution at sight ?  ;-)
    Thanks a lot for any help on this, I am totally stuck here ... !
    Claude

    THANKS a lot dj-paige   ... !!!
    Thanks to the psedbtool (thanks  john rellis too  !) .. I could diagnose the problem : my two disk drives C: and F: had the same serial number .
    And even better :  I could SOLVE the problem .
    I changed the volumeid of disk F:  asexplained in john rellis's documentation .. and now PSE7's Catalog works fine !!
    (I am still waiting for a decent answer from Adobe's suuport .. it's a shame that they do not do !).
    THANKS again dj-paige  for the support received ... !!!
    I wish all problems in life could be solved as easily as this one !!!

  • T60 - Hard Disk (other than lenovo and IBM)

    Hi,
    I want a buy 160 GB hard disk for T60 - 1952 - CTO model.
    Will T60 support 250 and 320 GB HDD ?
    Are there any other compatible hard drives available in the market apart from buying it from Lenovo or IBM.  The HDD of IBM/Lenovo are quite expensive.
    What is the risk that I run if I purchase a hard drive from Seagate or any other manufacturer.
    Thanks,
    Rahul.

    Any SATA drive would do.  You remove the hard drive cover, pull out the hard drive, then you will see the original drive.  Remove the four screws holding the caddy to the drive, put the new drive in the caddy, re-screw, re-cover then reload your Ubuntu OS :smiley: operating system.

  • How do i use an iTunes library in a disk other than startup?

    I boot off a Solid State Drive (only 240 GB) but have most of my data in a 750 GB HDD.  My media has grown to the point that I cannot fit it into the SSD but easily fits into the HDD.  Can I just use the iTunes library in the HDD?

  • Can I move cache to external hard drive to save disk space for photoshop and bridge?

    Can I move cache to external hard drive to save disk space for photoshop and bridge?

    So could I take everything off my external hard drive, save it to my Mac, then re-format it for my Mac and move everything back to the external hard drive?
    Yes. Keep in mind that you need to back up all data, including the data on an external drive. So if you're going to use the external drive to store original data, as opposed to backups, then you really need another one to back up the first one. You also need to back up the data on your internal drive, of course. This isn't optional. You must do it, or you'll lose everything sooner or later. All disk drives fail eventually, often with no warning.
    If I do that how do I format the external hard drive for my Mac?
    Launch the Disk Utility application and search the built-in help for "erase."
    Would it be easier to just buy a external hard drive that is for a Mac?
    All external hard drives work with Macs. Some might come pre-formatted for use with Macs, but it only takes a few minutes to do that yourself.

  • How can i download movies from my portable hard disk or usb to my Ipad2 ?

    how can i download movies from my portable hard disk or usb to my Ipad2 ?

    Import them into iTunes, then sync to your iPad. Movies may need to be converted to an iTunes compatible format. There are any number of utilities for that such as HandBrake 0.9.5.
    Please get the iPad iOS 4 user guide.

    Import it into an iTunes library and then sync the iPhone with that library. If desired, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down and create or choose an iTunes library on that drive.

    My bad Eric. The startup preference recognizes the primary as a 10.8.3 startup volume but when u select it the system does not boot. I can only boot from my external backup drive

  • Can I move podcast from my account to other's?

    can I move podcast from my account to other's?
    i.e. may it have 2 owners?

    You're talking about an episode you've downloaded in someone else's podcast, and moving it to another user account on your Mac? You could simply subscribe to the podcast in the other account and download it again, but if you want to save the download time just drag the episode(s) to the Desktop, then place them in the Users/shared folder, then open the other user account and drag them from there to iTunes.
    If this isn't what you are trying to do please specify exactly what it is.

  • In itunes, can i save my music on another hard drive other than C?

    i have the program installed on my computer, i would like the music to be saved on another hard drive other than C, is there a way to do that within itunes?

    You can have multiple libraries, and switch between them using the shift-start-iTunes method. Normally a single library is all that is required. Each library connects to a single designated media folder, however you can import content from other locations if you choose. See Make a split library portable for reasons why this may not be the best approach. If you want to access the "same" library on more than one machine then you need to clone the library files as well as media.

    Hello Robert,
    First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
    Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Can I install Calendar Server on another partition other than root file system

    Can I install Calendar Server on another partition other than / ?
    <P>
    In this version, the default path is hard coded to install in
    /users/unison. However, if you do not have enough room on your root
    partition or choose to install it in another location, you can do so
    using a logical link. The installation guide explains this as well.
    <P>
    For example, suppose you want /users/unison, which must NOT already
    exist, to be logically linked to /var/opt/unison, which must exist.
    Then as root user:
    <P>
    <UL>
    <LI>
    Create the directory /users (if it does not already exist)
    <P>
    % mkdir /users
    <P>
    <LI>
    Create the logical link. The directory /users/unison must
    NOT exist before doing this.
    <P>
    % ln -s /var/opt/unison /users/unison
    </UL>
    <P>
    <P>

    makes a lot of sense.  I am looking for an answer myself.  My documents folder long ago outgrew it's place on the boot drive.  It would be nice to keep it in the user folder organized on another disc

  • Can I install Adobe Reader to a drive other than the C: drive?

    Can I install Adobe Reader to a drive other than the C: drive?

    Hello there,
    Welcome to Adobe Community. Yes it can be installed on a different drive. Though some of the files installed by it will still be installed on C: drive.
    When you run the installer, use 'Change destination folder' at the bottom of the panel
    If you already have Adobe Reader installed on the C: drive, you must uninstall it before installing a new version on a different location.
    Thanks!
