Can I move my bootable hard drive from one G5 to another?

Hi there,
Due to issues with our Power Mac G5 dual 2.3, 1Gb RAM, 250Gb HDD, Mac OS X10.5.8 we have bought a refurb Power Mac G5 running dual 2Ghz, 4Gb RAM, 160HDD & OS X 10.5.
My question is can we simply swap the 250Gb HDD from the old MAC to the refurb one & remove the 160Gb (or use as second HDD) meanig the 250Gb drive is the boot drive? I'm concerned there may be processor /RAM incompatibility issues.
There is a lot of data on the old Mac HDD, plus all the programs which we don't have the original discs for (long, sore story) such as Office '08 & AdobeCS4. My main concern is the Entourage database which has around 4year's worth of emails on is '08 version on the old Mac but we only have the install discs for the 2004 version!
I have had a scan through other discussions but could not see anything similar, sorry if I missed anything (I probally did!)
Any help would be really appreciated!

Excellent!! Thanks so much for answering my query so quickly.
I am very relieved to be staying Mac, the alternative was to go to a PC...... Belive me I lost sleep over that!!
Thanks again
Rich

  • Can i copy my entire hard drive from one computer to another?

I am buying a used ibook 900gh 640ram 40gb hd using 300mh clamshell now - i would like to copy my entire hard drive from the clamshell to the new ibook OS and all so when i use it everything will look and work exactly like it does on the clamshell - can i do this easily? disc copy when booted from a CD?

Hi, not on Tiger at the moment, so I can't be certain, but...
I may be wrong, but I thought the Networked Mac only came about in Leopard's Migration assistant.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1554
Setup Assistant, included with computers that have Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later preinstalled, can transfer data (including account settings and home folders) from a previous Mac (that's using Mac OS X 10.1 or later) to your newer computer. You'll need a FireWire cable to connect the two computers together. The Assistant offers to transfer (or "migrate") data from your older computer when you turn on your new computer for the first time. Make sure the older computer's firmware is up-to-date first.
The only way I see this is going to happen is with a USB/FW external drive, and painfully Clone the Clamshell via USB 1.1 to the external drive, move the drive to the iBook and connect via FW.

  • How can I transfer contents of hard drive from one iMac to another,

    Hi
I have two iMacs (older G3 CRT) both are running OSX 10.2.8.
I want to copy the contents of the hard drive on iMac "A' to the hard drive of iMac "B". Can I do this,,, How can this be accomplished ??

    Hi Everyone
Ok,,, here is my update, I was able to download finally Carbon Copy Cloner, but it will not even launch because the BSD module is missing on my iMac #1, it seems that I need to install this file from the original OSX disk which happens to be at work. OK, then I tried SuperDuper, it installed fine, then I read the instruction PDF, but when I went to make the copy onto the iMac #2, ( I did start it in Firewire mode, connected it via firewire to iMac #1
and the drive mounted fine on the desktop) BUT for some reason Super Duper won't allow the copying of files.
SO< then I stupidly just copied the entire contents of the hard drive on iMac #1 to the hard drive of iMac #2, which was mounted on the desktop of iMac #1. Then when all the files copied, I ejected the mounted drive, disconnected the Firewire cable and started imac #2, But iMac #2 would not boot up, I repaired it's disk permissions by once again starting in Firewire wire mode and using the disk utility on iMac #1 to repair the mounted drive of iMac #2), Then I disconneted the cable and started iMac #2, but still no boot up, just the little flashing file icon.. I also reset the PRAM on startup but still nothing. Any ideas, I can wait until Monday and do a clean install of OSX from my original disk, but was hoping there was something I can until then. And, of course, I;m still seeking a solution to getting all the programs, dats amd files from the hard drive on iMac #1 copied over to iMac #2,,, Any other ideas would be appreciated.<br>

  • How can I move the ODI Work Repository from one server to another server?

How can I move the ODI Work Repository from one server to another server?

    Hi,
If you would like to move your source models, target models and project contents from Work repository 1 to another work repository.
I.e. Dev. server to Prod Server.
    1. Firstly, replicate the master repository connections i.e. with same naming conventions manually
    2. Go to Dev. Server work repository -> File Tab -> Click on Export work repository (save it in a folder)
    3. After exporting, you can view the xml files in the folders.
    4. Now, Open the Prod. server and make sure you already replicated mas. rep. details.
    5. Now, right click on model and import source model in synonym mode insert_update (select source model from the folder where your xml file located)
    6. Similarily, import again target then Project.
    Now, check. It should work.
    Thank you.

  • Swapping hard drive from one MacBook to another

I'll spare you the gory details, but my daughter broke the screen on her 2.0 Core Duo MacBook, one of the original ones. It has a 250 gb hard drive that I put in to replace the small stock drive. We are replacing this MacBook with a new one, a 2.0 Core 2 Duo. What I would like to do is simply swap out the hard drive from the old and out it in the new one. The old one does have Leopard. Is there any reason this would not work? Thanks.
(Also, is there any market anywhere for a MacBook that works fine except for the broken screen?)

You may need to run Leopard install again on the drive when it's in the new MacBook. There will be some drivers and stuff that won't be on there that the new one needs. You could probably just do an upgrade to do this.

You could consider keeping it and hooking it to an external monitor and use it that way as a spare computer.
You could also look online at some of the MacBook repir shops and see if they buy broken MacBooks for parts.

  • Can i move an unfinished imovie project from one mac to another

so i started a project in imovie on my parents mac and now i want to finish it off on my macbook. is there anyway I can transfer the project????

Yup. however, seeing as how it isn't finalized, well this ought to work.
1-connect up your macbook to your parents' mac (file sharing?)
2-open up iMovie (on your parents' mac)
3-click on "project library" in the upper right hand corner of your iMovie window. You should see your other hard drive there, also. drag your project to this drive. If a message comes up about "project" or "project and events", choose project and events
4-launch iMovie (on your macbook) click on Project Library. and the one your transferred should be there. drag it to the iMovie projects list and it should work
oh, one last thing. Both your parents' mac and your macbook should have the same version of iMovie for this to work, so I've been told

  • Transferring a hard drive from one imac to another

I have an iMac G5 1.8GHz (2gb RAM) bought new in 2004. I updated the hard drive last year from 80GB to 1TB (Hitachi serial ATA)
I have over 500GB of data on this disc.
I have now bought the following from a friend:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM81.00C1.B00
    SMC Version (system): 1.29f1
    Serial Number (system): YM8362M1ZE3
This is an early 2008 imac and is still in warranty till January 2010. The hard drive in this machine is 320GB.
My question is: If I take the hard drive out of my old iMac and take it (and my new iMac) to a genius centre, would they swap the drives for me? and would this void the warranty?
I would like, if possible, to take out an Applecare extended warranty on it.
    Thanks for any help given
    Cris

  • I have a 2008 Macbook.  How do you change out the hard drive from one macbook to another?  Maybe I just need the special screwdriver to get the hard drive out?

I have a 2008 Macbook.  I want to install a newer (used) hard drive into this one.  I think all I need is the special screwdriver to remove it, then install it.  Where can I get that screw driver?

There is some information on how to, plus some tool lists in the online iFixit guides for repair and replacement of parts, in these computers.

  • How can I move an Photoshop cc membership from one laptop to another?

Having to borrow a friends laptop for classes, installing a cc mebership on their compter. I have my own laptop back from repairs and want to move my membership with purchased Photoshop on it, HOW? or Can I?

Just repeat the installation process... install the CC manager program and sign in and download whichever application(s) are associated for your subscription.  As a minimum you can sign out of the installation on the other machine to make it inactive... if you prefer.

  • Can you move a software raid 1 from one mac to another

I have a 2 disc software raid 1 on my powermac and I want to move it to my mac pro. Does anyone know if I can do this?

It appears that in Mac OS X 10.4, and again in the transition to 10.7, RAID format may have undergone dramatic changes. If you are trying to move a RAID array across those boundaries, you may not have the best results moving the drives directly.

  • Can I move an ibook author file from one device to another?

I have ibook Author on my Macbook and my Mac Mini.  If I start a project on my Macbook, is it possible to transfer the incomplete file to my Mini (where all my pictures and charts are stored) later to complete it?
    ~~ Chikana

Just like any other file, save your book where you can find it - it will have the suffix .iba
Move that file, however you like, to your other computer and continue there.

  • HT204053 how can i move an icloud email address from one ipod to another?

    Hi
My kids have ipods and wanted icloud activated.  Foolishly I set up an icloud email account but used my son's name on my daughter's ipod.  How can I switch the icloud email account to my son's ipod?
    Thanks,

I don't really understand iCloud, but I have an Apple ID since both my kids are underage (8 and 11).  They share my Apple ID, but have different Ipods.  Can/Should I have separate iCloud emails for them?  To recap, I have 1 Apple account, but have 2 kids, a boy and a girl.  How do I have separate id's for their individual ipods using icloud when I have one Apple ID?

  • Can you move a group of items from one keychain to another?

In the process of setting up Leopard, I wound up with a "login" keychain and an "old" keychain. The login keychain opens nicely when I login, but the old one needs me to open it manually the first time its called during a session. Not a great inconvenience, but it seemed to make more sense to take all the items in it and drag them into the "login" keychain. It appears you can't do this without entering the password for each item. Way too boring! Is there an easier way?

If the help files don't address that, report that to Apple—sorry, I didn't look. However, I did open Keychain Access->selected import and the dialog box seem self-explanatory. I only have one keychain, but it appears that you can select any residing in Keychains and import its information into any other one listed. As for having to enter a password for every entry, I can't help with that. If you want to merge them, then that's the price one pays for having multiple keychains.

You want system, data, backup etc. Make good use of the four internal drive bays.
You will have to use Disk Utility to ERASE or click on drive and use PARTITION to make it Mac writeable.
