Can I move my files to new folders without losing playlist/play count info?

I just moved all my mp3s to my external hard drive. Now they all have exclamation points next to them. Is there any easy way to reconnect the files than individually? I have 7000 files that I just moved, and I don't have the time to right-click on each and every one of them individually. But I don't want to lose my playlist and play count information either. What do I do?

If you keep your music in multiple locations, there's no easy way for iTunes to keep track if you just start moving things around. If you allow iTunes to manage your files (Keep iTunes Music folder organized & Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library), then it is much easier to change the location of your music.
1. Change the location in Preferences -> Advanced -> General: iTunes Music Folder Location.
2. From the main interface, select Advanced -> Consolidate Music (from the menus).
This will cause iTunes to copy all of your music to the new location. When you've verified everything is OK, then you can delete the original iTunes Music (not iTunes parent) folder. The library database will remain the the original location.

  • I can't move music files to different folders in my itunes library

First, I have not created files in my itunes library for a while, and I could swear it was a lot easier years ago! ALL that I want to do is add the new music I've purchased or recently added to a folder that already exists in the playlist.
    1) All my recently added songs have been purchased through my iphone, I'd like to move them to a folder.
    2) When I connect my phone to my computer, I see the tab to click on my phone. I do, and it opens the content of Music in my iphone.
    3) In this content, there are folders to the left listed, beginning with Music, Movies, Purchased, Recently Added, Recently Played, "My Name" Favorites, another specific folder I labeled to seperate music, and then another Purchased folder.
    4) I WANT TO MOVE or copy my newly purchased music file to these folders so when I play them on my phone, I can SIMPLY choose the file that is asscoiated with my Favorites or other choice.
Why Is This So Difficult to do! Or is it that easy and I'm overlooking the past hour I've spent trying!
Second part of my aggravation, why can i NOT sort the files in a music folder by song name anymore?! We used to be able to click at the top of the listing, Name, Aritist, Albulm etc. to sort them alphabetically and make a search easier depending on , but now I can no longer do this.

This happened to me too but I only tried one song and then gave up. I thought it was a fairly popular song.

  • How do I sync my iPod Touch to a new account without losing playlists?

Hey, everyone. Recently, one of my computers, which I used to sync my iPod to, crashed. Luckily, my music was backed up on another computer, but the playlists, apps, etc. were not. Is there a way for me to download my playlists and such onto this new computer without deleting the music (some of which isn't currently on my iPod; the library is too large for all songs to fit on the iPod)? I'm leaving on a road trip early tomorrow morning and I'd really appreciate it if you all could help me out before then so I can have some great music for the road!
    Maggie
P.S. My iPod is a second-generation, and my computer is a PC with Windows XP. The version of iTunes that I have is pretty new, but my iPod hasn't been updated in a while, if that makes any difference. A quick fix would be awesome because of the previously mentioned time constraints

You can transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - You can transfer non-Tunes purchases by using a thirds-party program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
    - You can also redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - You can mov music from one comuter to another by:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    - You will likely lose the playlists but you can move the music to the new computer.
    - After everything is on the new computer you can retain app date and other iPod settings by:
    - Connecting the iPod to the the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod undere Devices in iTunes and select Back Up.
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.

  • How Can I Move Individual Mail Messages to Folders Without Dragging Each One?

In my business, I get a lot of client email.  I also create and store a lot of client documents.  To manage everything, I have created a main folder named "Clients" on my Mac, and have also created a separate subfolder for each individual client to hold both documents and correspondence pertaining to that specific client.  When I want to save an email to that folder, I drag that message to the desktop to then be filed in the individual client's folder.  It's a two step process, but one I've been using successfully for some time.
This was not such a big deal before Mail became a beautiful full-screen app.  But now, in order to take advantage of Mail's full-screen capabilities, I have to first exit full screen each time I wish to drag a message out of Mail to my desktop.  Then once the message or messages have been dragged out, I have to reenable full-screen.  That's a couple of additional steps and a real nusiance.  I've considered creating a mailbox for each client in Mail, but with hundreds of clients that's really not an option.
My question is as follows: Is anyone aware of any app, script, or add on available for Mail, that would allow me to either move or copy individual email messages directly to my desktop or to a folder without having to go through exiting and enabling full screen each time?  Perhaps an app or script that offers a dedicated right-click in the context menu?  Or one that offers the "Desktop" as a location in the current right click "Move To" menu?  Or that would create a keyboard shortcut that would accomplish that task?  I've searched online, but have been unable to come up with anything.
Thanks in advance for your help. Any advice or suggestions you could give would be most appreciated!
    Patrick

Have you tried dragging the mail from the inbox and dropping it where you want to save it - all in the MAILBOXES sidebar? If you make the sub folders visible, you should be able to deposit the mail wherever you like.

  • How can I use iTunes on my new computer, without lossing all my music?

How can I use iTunes on my new computer, without losing all my music?
I don't want to rebuy everything I have purchased over the years.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

They should be in your itunes media folder. Use an external hard drive and just copy that to your new computer. I'm sure there's an easier way like this one (iTunes>File>Library>Export Library>External Hard Drive) but I never tried it before. Anyways, once that's done, just simply authorize your itunes account to play music you bought on to the new computer.

  • Sync my ipod to a new computer without losing songs currently on ipod

I had my itunes and ipod set up on a computer. Then I got a new computer and I had to reinstall itunes on that computer. But, I cant sync my iPod to my new computer because it will erase all the songs that are on it from my old computer, and replace them with the songs in my new library. I have been adding songs manually and that worked for a little but now my iPod is full and I can't take any songs off because my iPod isn't synced to my new itunes. Is there any way I can sync my ipod to my new itunes without losing all my old songs?

Put the songs currently on your iPod back into iTunes.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
Then you can sync your iPod with iTunes as before.

I'd recommend staring over, Pondini has created an excellent guide on how to use Setup Assistant. I'd recommend begin reading Pondini Setup Assistant tips where he talks about "Second Chance." Assuming your Time Machine backup is sound the restore  should be very smooth.

  • Can't move image files within Bridge

I recently bought an iMac and got the CS5 license transferred over to the Mac platform. Got CS5 loaded and everything works except for one critical thing: I can no longer move image files within Bridge. When I do the right click on an image file to select that command, the command is "grey" and won't let me to choose it.  So I am forced to rearrange my image files through the Mac's Finder/Pictures feature.  Drag and drop doesn't work either.  I have looked everywhere for a setting that would allow movement of files to different folders and rearrangement within Bridge, and can't find one.  I have Bridge set as my default for photos and not the lame iPhoto program on Macs.  I previously was to be able to freely use Bridge for organizing my photos on a PC and now sorely disappointed that I can't do this with my new iMac.

I previously was to be able to freely use Bridge for organizing my photos on a PC and now sorely disappointed that I can't do this with my new iMac.
No need for disappointment because you can move all files freely within Bridge.
First check if you have read and write permissions for your files/folders/disk (try move the files using finder) If Finder allows you to drag the files to the location you previously wanted in Bridge then the problem lies in Bridge.
First select a file and with right mouse click menu choose purge cache for selection. If the problem is gone you could do so for the whole folder using menu tools/cache/purge cache for folder while having Bridge pointed to that folder.
If not restart bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences.
    could you report back?

how can i sync my iPod with new iTunes on new computer without losing my old library? There is no backup iTunes/iPod files available.

If you connect your ipod to your computer then look in the hidden folder labeled "iPod_Control" . (This is on a Mac version, but i think it's the same for Windows) and in "Music" is all your music mixed up in different folders. Just drag the MUSIC folder onto itunes then BAM! It's done ;D

  • Can't move music files to playlists or ipod...

I've used iTunes for years, but for some reason, when I try to drag my music files to a playlist or to my iPod, the little green plus is not appearing and the playlist/iPod name does not highlight when I pass the cursor over it. I can't move any files anywhere! I can't move them from playlist to playlist or anything. I have "manually manage music" checked. I can't move old files or my new ones. It's not the iPod, because I can't move the files to playlists, either. I'm wondering if iTunes has a bug? I think I just updated it today.

It doesn't sound like it's an issue with the files themselves, but rather with the trash.
I haven't seen it, but I can see how that could occur. Each volume tends to have its own Trash folder. It's hidden, typically called .Trashes and at the root of the hard drive. I have had Trash-related issues outside of Aperture in the past (likely of my own doing). The issue with problems like these it it's nigh impossible to establish cause and effect… you could do something and not notice the problem for days or even weeks, in a completely un-related way.
I doubt that "Repair Permissions" is responsible for the fix, unless the files were on your boot volume. RP has no effect outside of a boot volume.

  • My itunes is on an old computer.  So old that I can't update it and so Haven't used it in two years.  How can I move it to my new laptop and make sure this doesn't happen again?  Very frustrated that I've spend $$ but can't get my music.

My itunes is on an old computer.  So old that I can't update it and so Haven't used it in two years.  How can I move it to my new laptop and make sure this doesn't happen again?  Very frustrated that I've spend $$ but can't get my music.
I want so set up itunes on my laptop and make sure that I get all of my old music and any music shared from my sons' itunes accounts.  Do I have to set up itunes on my new laptop first and then use the same logins?  Really concerned about losing any music, etc.

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.
