Can I move the application folder in 10.7

I have recently upgraded to an iMac 27" with the i7 - now using 256 SSD plus a 2 TB drive.  When moving "lots" of applications from my older MacPro I will need more room than 256 - can I move the App Folder to the 2 TB drive and continue to have full access?

It causes problems for backing up if you do.  Better to get a larger internal hard drive*:

Or archive documents you don't use frequently away from the internal hard drive.   But make sure you always have at least two copies of your data at all times.

  • HT1229 Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD? Will it work the same way after moving onto an external HDD? do I then need to have the external connected at all times, even when I don't use iPhoto?

I have a macbook pro, but the amount of pictures I have now exceeds 500GB
I want to have all the pictures in iPhoto, so I could see them and edit them in iPhoto.
Which means... I need the iPhoto file folder in an external HDD to use iPhoto that way.
Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD?
Will it work the same way, as if the iPhoto folder is on the internal drive?

    yes
    yes
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Can I move the MAIL folder off my System drive?

    Hi there,
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.7 and using Apple's MAIL email.
I have a very small 32gig SSD on my Mac G5 8 Core and the folder in USERS>(My name)>LIBRARY>MAIL is 11GB in size. I'd like to move this to a different internal drive, but I imagine if I do so I will find that my mail doesn't work.
Can anyone help me with the correct procedure for getting this folder off my SSD and onto a different internal drive?
Maybe if I moved the MAIL application and that MAIL folder to a different internal drive it would work ok? Or can I continue to run the MAIL program from the SSD and move the MAIL folder, the program will find it?
    Any ideas greatly appreciated.
    With thanks,
    Harry.

  • Can I move the Pictures folder to a different internal drive?

I would like to move the Pictures folder that shows up in the Finder sidebar from my Macintosh HD (boot drive) to a separate internal drive (Media Drive) where I store all my media files. I want to do this so that when I want to save a photo from a web site or email I can click on it, select the Pictures folder, have it saved to the Pictures folder on my Media Drive rather than on the Macintosh HD (boot drive) where it currently resides. I have tried dragging and dropping the folder from the Macintosh HD (boot drive) to the Media Drive but it does not work. Ideas would be most welcome. Thanks

    Baltwo,
a question - perhaps it might be safer to create a symbolic link to the relocated folder on the external drive instead of an alias. Otherwise Unix based image editors like GIMP will not be able to see this new "Pictures" folder in the file chooser dialogue.

  • Finder is unstable and i can't open the applications folder

    Hello,
I have a brand new 15" rMBP & I was just editing a file with Hex Fiend, when it suddely froze. After restart, finder is acting weird. I cannot reach the applications folder. Finder crashes and restarts every time.
Also, spotlight is not working. When i hit command space, it opens for a millisec, and then spotlight closes and the icons in the upper right corner disappears (except adobe CC and dropbox). They come back after a few seconds.
Every ten seconds, the battery indicator disappears and comes back the next second. If you are scanning for new networks when the icon disappears, the scan resets
What can i do to fix this? Please help!
I need my computer to be functional in order to work!
I've tried safe boot, but the problem is still there. Spotlight works though
Also tried to reset SMC, didn't work
    Tried reset SRAM, didn't work

Download the 10.9 installer (don't open it).
Either use Lion disk maker http://liondiskmaker.com
Or use Disk Utility to create a USB 10.9 installer (my prefered method).
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/08/make-a-bootable-mac-os-x-10-7-lion-installer-from -a-usb-flash-drive/
Once completed, insert into the MBP, boot holding alt then select the USB disk to boot from.
If it fails to boot try another USB port or try another stick - some USB disks just don't boot for some reason.
You can open Disk Utility one the system has got to the installer screen. Select the internal disk (the top level item in the left list). Erase the boot HD by creating a new single partition (Mac OS Extended + Journal). Select 'GUID Partition Table' in the Options. Apply that & all your data will be gone.
Quit back to the install screen & install. The installer should also add a recovery partition to the disk.
Eventually it will reboot to the clean OS. Take care with whatever apps you install, just get the newest versions

  • Can't find the Applications folder after upgrading to Yosemite

I was successful in upgrading my Macbook from Snow Leopard to Yosemite.  So I installed Photoshop Elements 13.  It seemed to work until I closed out of Photoshop.  I couldn't find the Applications folder or the Photoshop program.  Would like to know any hints on what I could try in order to bring up my Applications folder, where Photoshop is likely still stored.

    Have you tried Spotlight?
    Ciao.

  • How can we move the 'application data\apple computers' folder to another location

We use roaming profiles and the Application Data folder is stored on a network drive with restricted space (500MB).  This has not been a problem in the past but since we've been rolling out iPad's & iPhones, this restriction is becoming a problem as iTunes download's ios updates and stores device backups in 'application data\apple computers' folder (and not in the media library).
Does anyone know how we can move this 'application data\apple computers' folder to another location or force iTunes to store the downloads/updates in the media library (which can be moved)?
Thanks very much in advance for any help.

Move the iTunes Library elsewhere, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, and point it there.

  • Adobe applications hidden underneath Apple OS X menu bar. I can't move the application window.

I cannot move the Photoshop application window. It is stuck/hidden underneath of the Apple OS X menu bar. I can't see the maximize, minimize, etc buttons and I cannot grab the frame of the window to drag it around the screen. Extremely frustrating. I've tried reseting the the window, quitting the application and re-opening it, logging off/shutting down and rebooting, etc. Nothing works. Maddening.
    Help appreciated.

Glad to see this solution still works. Thanks robrevel2
NOT glad to see that this is still a problem under OS X 10.9.5 - I assume this continues to exist in Yosemite. It's great to see new features, but come on, how about some functional stability? I still occasionally lose the ability to toggle to hand tool with my spacebar.

  • How can I move the .thunderbird folder so I can sync it with Insync and 3 other computers.

I have had to move from Ubuntu One to Insync and the .thunderbird folder needs to be in the Insync folder to sync with all 3 computers. Is there a way to move it so that I can sync all files and settings?
I can move mail storage and local folders but what about calendar and other data?
    I'm using Ubuntu 13.10

have you considered using imap mail and synchronized calendars to a server. That is really how it is meant to work. Thunderbird has no idea about network drives or other programs interfering with it's files and they almost invariably cause massive headaches for the parties involved.

  • Can i move the SWSETUP folder

I have an HP Envy 17 with an 80GB mSata drive which also has the operating system so there is limited space.  The SWSETUP folder is 1.81GB.  Can I move it to my 1 TB  Data Drive without consequences?

    Hi,
Yes, you can move this folder - in fact it's not a bad idea to also save a copy to a dvd or flash drive.
The swsetup folder contains all the drivers and the majority of software that comes with your machine - if you use Recovery Manager to reinstall software/drivers, this is the folder accessed, so you would need to move it back before using this option.

  • How can I move the passwords folder on a external drive?

    Hello!
    I have a simple question:
I do not want the passwords and filled forms data stored on my computer but rather on a flash drive. So, when I am done with the computer, I unplug the flash drive and take all sensitive data with me.
How can I do it? How can I change the default location C:\Documents and Settings\sun\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles to the flash drive?

That preference does not exist by default. Right-click in the about:config window and choose New > String, set it name to '''browser.cache.disk.parent_directory''' and value to where you want the cache. (Note there is an underscore in the name)

in the Application folder, selecting Kind view,  can it be be rearranged?

Not if you open the Applications folder by clicking on the icon in the Taskbar..  But you can also open the Applications folder in Finder, where the type of viewing Can be changed, somewhat.

  • How can I move an application window to a different desktop space?

Spaces is cool, very cool and useful. I'm glad they took the hint from KDE desktop in Linux and made it work unlike the clumsy goober that M'soft tried to do. But here's the thing- in Linux you can move an application to a different desktop space. I guess that's coming in a later update- nobody thought you'd wanna move something to another space!

Unfortunately, I've run into several non-Apple programs, including Adobe Photoshop CS3 that do not show up in the Spaces grid view. If you can't see the windows in the grid you can't move the application.

  • Can't move an application out of the applications folder to a different location?

I had a couple of applications in the applications folder that I thought would be better suited on the desktop, but evertime I tried dragging the application to the desktop (or any other location on my Mac for that matter) it only seemed to create a shortcut, eventually I resorted to moving the application to the trash and then from the trash to the desktop, but this seems a bit cumbersome, isn't there a better way to do it? In the future should I settle for just creating a shortcut?

But they were originally placed on the desktop when I first installed them, then manually put in the applications folder myself.
    Thanks for the speedy reply

  • Move an application from the "users" folder to the "applications" folder

I downloaded 2 adobe trial applications to the "users" section of my drive due to the fact that I misunderstood the directions - I have not launched them as yet. Is it Possible to MOVE/DRAG the 2 applications to "applications" folder?  I am running MAC OSX10.7 on a MAC MINI . As these were really large downloads, I am crossing my fingers that this may work. Thank you.

While that DOES work, this is still an incredibly annoying problem.  I have never noticed this as a problem before (although I can't even really remember the last time I moved something out of my Applications folder).  I would really like it if this would just stop happening and allow me to just move applications wherever I want by clicking and dragging.  This seems like some type of feature that could be turned off.  I even noticed that when I try to drag something out of the Applications folder, my cursor turns into the alias arrow, indicating that it will only make an alias of the application, and not actually move it.  Is there any way to prevent this from happening to begin with, rather than just working around it?
