Can I move the location of the Users Folder from my hard drive to an external hard drive?

Hi
I have a 2011 iMac with two internal drives - a 250gb flash drive that acts as my hard drive and holds all my apps and user data, and an additional internal drive that holds data such as my aperture library.  I also have an external drive that holds files such as my raw and jpeg files, that would be referenced by the aperture library.
I'm now in a position where I'm running out of space on the flash drive (effectively my hard drive) and it's slowing the machine down.  Over 125gb of the space used is in the users folders.
Is there any way I can move these to the external drive in the same way I can, for example, with a dropbox folder?  Clearly, doing so would be a way to free up a huge amount of space on my hard drive, and preferable to looking at replacing the drive at this stage with a bigger one.
Grateful for any thoughts…..
Many thanks
Andy

  • Can I move the MAIL folder off my System drive?

    Hi there,
I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.7 and using Apple's MAIL email.
I have a very small 32gig SSD on my Mac G5 8 Core and the folder in USERS>(My name)>LIBRARY>MAIL is 11GB in size. I'd like to move this to a different internal drive, but I imagine if I do so I will find that my mail doesn't work.
Can anyone help me with the correct procedure for getting this folder off my SSD and onto a different internal drive?
Maybe if I moved the MAIL application and that MAIL folder to a different internal drive it would work ok? Or can I continue to run the MAIL program from the SSD and move the MAIL folder, the program will find it?
    Any ideas greatly appreciated.
    With thanks,
    Harry.

  • HT1229 Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD? Will it work the same way after moving onto an external HDD? do I then need to have the external connected at all times, even when I don't use iPhoto?

I have a macbook pro, but the amount of pictures I have now exceeds 500GB
I want to have all the pictures in iPhoto, so I could see them and edit them in iPhoto.
Which means... I need the iPhoto file folder in an external HDD to use iPhoto that way.
Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD?
Will it work the same way, as if the iPhoto folder is on the internal drive?

    yes
    yes
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • I have 528 contacts on my phone, but only 290 on my Icloud how can i move the rest over from my phone to my Icloud nothing is working

I have 528 contacts on my phone, but only 290 on my Icloud how can i move the rest over from my phone to my Icloud nothing is working

Go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to Off, choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted (they will still be in iCloud).
Download the app My Contacts Backup to your phone.  Use this app to backup the remaining contacts on your phone (from your exchange account) as a vCard attachment to an email that you send to yourself.  Confirm that you have received the email on your phone.
Go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts back to On.
Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contacts section), set this to iCloud.  (This will cause new contacts added to your phone to be added to the iCloud account.)
Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...tap your exchange account and turn off contacts syncing (otherwise you will end up with duplicates on your phone).
Open the My Contacts Backup email and tap the attachment to import the contacts from your exchange account back to your phone.  They will be added to iCloud and appear on icloud.com and any other devices syncing contacts with your account.

  • Can we move the Organisation structure from DEV to Quality to Production?

    Hi Experts,
Can we move the Organisation structure from DEV to Quality to Production?
If yes, I believe that we have to change  backend details at some areas.
Please any one provide procedure and precautions for doing this, In general how we have to proceed?
    Thanks
    Reshma

    Hello Reshma,
See program documentation from PFAL transaction (ALE distribution of HR Master Data).
    You will need:
    - an evaluation path,
    - a distribution models for sender DEV > receiver QUAL and sender QUAL > receiver PROD for correct message type.

  • Can I move the application folder in 10.7

I have recently upgraded to an iMac 27" with the i7 - now using 256 SSD plus a 2 TB drive.  When moving "lots" of applications from my older MacPro I will need more room than 256 - can I move the App Folder to the 2 TB drive and continue to have full access?

It causes problems for backing up if you do.  Better to get a larger internal hard drive*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Or archive documents you don't use frequently away from the internal hard drive.   But make sure you always have at least two copies of your data at all times.

can i move the trash bin from the right hand side to the left

  • How can I move the user home folder from server to the mac

I have a mac mini which i use for OpenDirectory, DNS and email. It is not a big installation it is for my wife and I.
My wife logs in using an network account, and the user folder is saved on the mac mini. This gives me a few problems.
    a. If the server is upated and restarted, my wife has to relogin, or sometimes reboot the imac to get acces to the email etc.
    b. Having the home folder on a mac mini is causing the imac to be very slow
    c. Itunes can't synchronize to her Iphone. Connecint it gives her a message that synchronization has been turned off, and if i try to turn it on I get an error message saying somthing about shared access to the user folder.
I do not use a network account and have none of these problems.
So I have decided to try to put her user folder on the imac instead of on the server..
But how do I do that?
I still wan't her to use the network user account, but the user folder should be on her imac.
    Kind Regards
    Henrik

I do not think you can move migration assistant for this situation.
The mac mini is a osx snow leopard server, running openDirectory, DNS and E-mail, so its not like she is logging into the server.
Her imac is bound to the OpenDirectory and she uses an openDirectory network user account to log in on her imac.
But the user folder is saved on the server, which is very nice if you have a bigger server with faster disks, and more mac clients to log into.
But in this situation she only uses her imac, and the performance of having the user folder on the server is not good enough, as well as the other problems I have with itunes sync etc.
So I do not think it's a job for the migration assistant.

  • How do I move the /Users folder to another disk

I have a shiny new MacPro, dual proc, with four, one TB hard drives in it, running OS X Server on Mountain Lion.  The first disk is the startup drive, the other three are simply empty, partitioned drives.
I am to be the sysadmin for this machine (and a half dozen Macbook Pros) for my organization.  I don't want user data to exist on the startup disk on this machine.  Right now, the only user that exists is my sysadmin account.  I want the three non-startup hard disks to hold the user data.  I think that what I want to do is map the /Users folder to one (or all) of the other three hard disks, and get that data off of the startup disk.
How do I change the location of the /Users folder?
Assuming this is possible, or desirable, the next question would be about RAID.  I have not created any RAID arrays using disk manager yet (this Mac Pro does not have a RAID card).
Should I first create a concatenated RAID set from the three additional disks?  I see no advantage to striped or mirrored sets, I will have a HUGE external drive for TimeMachine, and disk access speed is just fine.  But, I think I'd want drives 2, 3, and 4 to act as one big drive.  I think the concatenated RAID set is the answer to that.
    Thank you,
    Jess

How to relocate system and user data to another drive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4337
    http://chris.pirillo.com/how-to-move-the-home-folder-in-os-x-and-why/
I would only use TimeMachine as an add'l, not primary, or only method for backups.
    How to clone your system:

    http://www.macperformanceguide.com/blog/2012/20120711_2-MacPro-internal-clone-ba ckup.html
With drives of 2, 3 or 4TB now why use three and the one time I used Apple's concatenate, no I didn't like the way it made use of drives. So I would either stripe or mirror, and maybe not even  using  Apple Disk Utility.

  • Can I move the Pictures folder to a different internal drive?

I would like to move the Pictures folder that shows up in the Finder sidebar from my Macintosh HD (boot drive) to a separate internal drive (Media Drive) where I store all my media files. I want to do this so that when I want to save a photo from a web site or email I can click on it, select the Pictures folder, have it saved to the Pictures folder on my Media Drive rather than on the Macintosh HD (boot drive) where it currently resides. I have tried dragging and dropping the folder from the Macintosh HD (boot drive) to the Media Drive but it does not work. Ideas would be most welcome. Thanks

    Baltwo,
a question - perhaps it might be safer to create a symbolic link to the relocated folder on the external drive instead of an alias. Otherwise Unix based image editors like GIMP will not be able to see this new "Pictures" folder in the file chooser dialogue.

    Hi People
I was wondering if anyone knows how to move the tool bar from left to right in Adobe Illustrator Draw mobile app.

  • How can I stop the E:/ folder from popping up?

I would like to know how I can stop the E:/ folder from popping up everytime I perform an action e.g. transfering songs, and deleting songs from library.

This is likely due to an extension. For example, the Web Developer extension has a setting to open the error console, and some mouse gesture extensions have been known to open the error console.
To track down what extension is causing this for you, follow the procedure in this link - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes

  • Can I move the Lightroom Catalog from one location to another?

Lightroom by default, places the Lightroom Catalog in the Pictures folder on my PC. My image library though, is located on an external hard drive. I've read that it is better to have the Catalog at the same location to avoid disconnected images, which sounds reasonable. Is it feasable to move the Catalog over to the same drive as my image library, or will that cause a problem? In other words would I need to start over again and create a new Catalog on the external drive? I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I've learnt to my cost that the obvious solution isn't necessary the correct one.

For better performance it is preferable to have the catalog located on an internal hard drive. By default the catalog and the preview files have to be located in the same folder since there is continual read/write taking place while working in Lightroom. Lightroom does not make any changes to the original files so its fine for them to be located on another hard drive internal or external. Lightroom loves lots of hard disk space to operate so if your catalog is on an internal drive make sure it not starved for disk space.
However its ok for your catalog/previews files to reside on an external HDD with your original photo files.
Your photo files can reside on a HDD conected to a network but your catalog and preview files cannot be located on a network.
e.g I have my catalog / previews on the main HDD with my operating system with over 50% free disk space. My Photo files are on a secondary internal HDD with over 75% free disk space. I back up to external HDD.

  • How can I move the aperture program from my old Mac to my new Macbook Pro?

I have Aperture 3.2 on my old Mac laptop and would like to know how to move it over to my new macbook pro retina laptop.  I tried to just move it from my external hard drive, but that didn't work. Can I use the migration assistant to transfer this and only this program to my new laptop?
    Thanks,
    Shirley

Apple Pro Apps like Aperture really do best if installed from the original media that hey were bought on. Trying to migrate Aperture can lead to a lot of frustrating problems.
The libraries can be copied over just as you would any file but the application itself needs to be installed.
How did you purchase Aperture? If you got it in the Mac App Store then all you need to do is log into the MAS from the new computer using the same Apple ID you used to buy Aperture and download it.
If you bought it on DVD you will need to install from those and then run software update to get to the latest version. Remember if you bought it on DVD you will need the original serial number that was included in the package. Also if this was and upgrade from an earlier version (1 or 2)  you will need those serial numbers also.

  • How can I move the .thunderbird folder so I can sync it with Insync and 3 other computers.

I have had to move from Ubuntu One to Insync and the .thunderbird folder needs to be in the Insync folder to sync with all 3 computers. Is there a way to move it so that I can sync all files and settings?
I can move mail storage and local folders but what about calendar and other data?
    I'm using Ubuntu 13.10

have you considered using imap mail and synchronized calendars to a server. That is really how it is meant to work. Thunderbird has no idea about network drives or other programs interfering with it's files and they almost invariably cause massive headaches for the parties involved.
