Can I move Time Capsule to 2nd home and retain settings?

I have a new AirPort Time Capsule that is working great for wifi and backing up.  We are in the process of moving to our 2nd home for the season and not sure if I need to take any special steps to keep Airport up and running as is.  Same computer will be used (late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retna Display).  Different modem and carrier at second home.  Anything I need to do?

You can export your configuration from present setup in the airport utility and retain that..
As Bob says most people need to reset the TC for each setup.. It simply remembers too much and that stops it working properly.. as long as you record your names and passwords to the clients nothing will have changed but the setup on the TC does.. save this configuration as well.. mark the files carefully so you know which is which.. then each place you go you can quickly reset the TC to the location by simply importing the correct configuration.

Can you use time capsule for your mac and use readynas to back up your pc's on the same network

Sure, that is trivial setup.. they both have different names and IP addresses.
You should be able to use ReadyNas for TM backup but you should check the latest state of play for that.

  • Can you use Time Capsule on a windows and 2 macs at the same time.

Can you use Time Capsule on a windows and 2 macs at the same time as either a backup for one and a seperate HD drive for two?

    Yes.
From one viewpoint the Time Capsule is just NAS (Networked Attached Storage) and it supports the file sharing protocols necessary for both Windows and Macs.
From the viewpoint of the Macs it can also be used by Time Machine for backups.
As NAS it can be used for storing files, and there are many backup software packages that support NAS on both Windows and Macs.
In addition from a networking point of view it can serve as a router, wireless access point etc.

Can I use time capsule to store music and video files as well as use it to back up.

    Sure.
Why are so many peolple asking this?
    Just store your files there.
And when using Time-Maschine for the back-up select the Time-Capsule (whatever name your has) as the place to store the date.

  • Can I use Time Capsule as external storage and not for Time Machine?

Can I use Time Capsule as external storage and not for Time Machine?
I want to just use it like a USB drive but wirelessly and so other people in my suite can use it wirelessly to get the files I put on there. Let me know if you need me to explain some more

Will the Time Capsule come with directions on how to set it up as external storage rather then time machine.
Yes, AirPort Utility will walk you through the setup.
Because when I watched the video on it it says that time machine is automatically recognized
You have to turn Time Machine "On" for each Mac separately. By default, it is "Off". Leave it off if you do not want to use Time Machine.  If by some chance Time Machine is "On", then turn it "Off"

  • Can I use Time Capsule as a Home Media Hard Drive?

I have been trying to export my itunes library to time capsule without sucess...

You can use your Time Capsule ... either its internal or an attached USB HDD as the iTunes Media folder host. You can also place the iTunes Library on the Time Capsule as well.
Please check out the following TUAW article on "How To: Use your iTunes Library over AirPort Disk." Althought it is not exactly the same, it is similar and should get you started.

  • Can I use time capsule as a home server?

Running out of hard drive space on my Mac Book.  Wondered if I could dump all my movies and pictures onto the time capsule and still access them when I wanted at home.
    Thanks
    Eric

I happen to have an old Macbook and was contemplating hooking it via ethernet cable to the time capsule, hooking an ext HD via Firewire to the old Macbook and then using home sharing to stream to Apple TV and my current Macbook.
Is there any advantage to this? Honestly I feel like I am just trying to find a use for a still usable old Macbook when what you have described seems easy enough.
I would plug the old Macbook straight into the TV with a suitable video adapter cable.. the Macbook will have better video than the ATV, and better sound.. you can use it as a Media computer and use it as store for all you media and as a media centre..
Unless you want to sell it off, that seems as good a use as any.. and it should be plenty powerful enough for that job.

  • Can I move Time Capsule hard drive to an external enclosure for faster restore (or initial back-up)?

I upgraded my Time Capsule with a 4TB hard drive.  I just backed up 500GB of data from a MacBook Pro with Time Machine and it took almost an entire day over a wired gigabit connection.  The next MacBook Pro I need to back up has more than 2TB of data, so I'm anticipating that the process will take nearly four days.  The slow speed of the Time Capsule leaves me with two questions...
    1. If I ever need to restore my entire system from the Time Capsule, can I remove the drive from the Time Capsule, install it in an external hard drive enclosure and restore from that as it will be a much faster USB 3.0 connection than through the Time Capsule itself?
    2. To save the time of waiting four days for the initial Time Machine back-up, can I remove the drive from the Time Capsule, install it in an external enclosure to do the first back-up and then put it back in the Time Capsule for future back-ups?
    Thank you.

The answer to this is no.. TM backup is done differently on a local drive .. cf a network drive. The network drive must have the backup inside a sparsebundle.. you can read the backup locally and it is vaguely possible to backup files from local to sparsebundle but you are still going to find TM is pretty finicky if it finds you tampered with its internals.
I agree with Kappy .. if you want to use local backups just use USB3 drive.. it is a bit unfair to compare.. as USB3 is 5Gbps connection whilst ethernet is only 1Gbps.. you might also find the speed in the backup is limited by sheer mechanical drive performance.. figures are always quoted for single large files but when you copy heaps of small files.. a mechanical drive takes a lot of time writing file allocations.. even if the actual file write is short.. it takes a long time relative to track after track of large file copying.
Let me add a few things.. 500GB disk in the MBP is not the quickest.. they are usually the slow 5400rpm drives.. unless you replaced it.
Our experience of TC suggests a speed of around 50GB/hr average doing backups.. but it is essential that you turn off wireless.. otherwise you will slow it down.. It is also important IPv6 is set correctly to link-local only and you cannot trust auto to get that right.. you need to set it.
If you still cannot achieve average speed of around 50GB/hr something is wrong.. either you are not getting full gigabit or something is slow.. test with the single large file eg 1GB over ethernet and see.. you should manage speed of around 50MBytes/sec.. (it can vary from 30-60 however... ).
It can take a long long time to do 2TB.. if that is all internal then perhaps look at using TM for the boot drive only.. you surely have it partitioned.. or multiple disks.. and use Carbon Copy Cloner for the other partitions.. it is not that it will go any faster.. but that you can separate out the tasks easier.

  • Is it possible to remote-access my time-capsule to my home and downloads directly to it?

    Hello,
I have only Macbook Air and iPhone.
I was wondering if its possible I could remotely access my time-capsule at home while I'm away and send downloads to it,
Once I get back the downloads are finished.

Is it possible to block access to the TC external hard drive
I am guessing here, that you may mean access to the internal hard drive on the TC
Set up a disk password for the Time Capsule hard drive.....and only give it to those that you want to have access to the hard drive.
This is not a foolproof method.....there are none, actually.....but it will keep honest folks away.

  • MacBook Air 11" can't access Time Capsule Disk

    Hi:
I have two Minis, a MPB 13" and a MBA 11" connected to my Time Capsule. My MBP and the two Minis can access the Time Capsule disk with no problem. It's a different story for the MBA.
From the MBA, I can see my Time Capsule in Finder (Bonjour) and I can click on it, however the disk never appears. Clicking "connect as" doesn't do anything either. From Finder if I go "connect to server" and I type the IP address of my Time Capsule it connects without problems, but it won't connect with its name.
I am able to connect the disk on my other Macs from the MBA via Bonjour, just not the Time Capsule. As mentionned earlier, the Time Capsule disk is available from my other Macs and even from Windows.
I rebooted a few times and confirmed that the username/password are properly saved in the keychain of my MBA.
Any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks!

Are your other Macs connected via Wifi or ethernet? It sounds like some sort of network configuration issue. If they are connected via Wifi then I'd make sure the MBA has the same settings for it's network. Alternately I'd get rid of the keychain entry on the MBA and re-enter it to make sure it's correct. As a last resort I'd restart the Time Capsule and see if it makes a difference. I'm connecting a MBA to a Time Capsule so it should work.

  • Can I use time capsule with a ASUS (RT-N16)router?

I will use a router with vpn. Can I use time capsule with it? And if yes, how do I connect them?

There is no vpn built into the native firmware of N16 so I presume you are going to use third party.
Just plug in the TC and bridge it.. ie go to Internet tab of airport utility and select connection sharing off.
wireless then you will need to figure out.. you can setup roaming on 2.4ghz by using identical wireless name = ssid and security but lock both to different channels.. pick out of 1, 6, 11
In a PC network make sure you use the TC with a new name.. no spaces no special characters.. same with wireless. TC also restrict wireless on 2.4ghz to only 20mhz.. if you have the N16 set to 40mhz you will have to be extra careful with channels.. 40mhz will use up two channels and only one remains.. so your household will have filled the 2.4ghz.
Someone suggested you can turn off 2.4ghz in the TC by not naming it.. When I try that it kicks up an error that it has to be named. So perhaps someone else has a suggestion of how to turn off 2.4ghz.
You can turn off 5ghz by unchecking it. Seems mighty strange that you cannot turn off 2.4ghz but you can turn off 5ghz.

  • Can i use time capsule for back up my movies and watching them with my bravia tv

can i use time capsule for back up my movies and watching them with my bravia tv.
i mean can i use this for external hard disk drive to back up my movies and watching them with tv that has a lan port or wi-fi technology.

Only if the TV is a media player.. the TC is dumb as a board router with a hard disk.. there is no DLNA which I suspect the TV requires.. you can get a player like the WDLive and it will play movie files from the TC to the TV.. remember the TC is nothing but a file store.. no servers .. no nothing.

  • Can i use time capsule to backup movies and see them wireless without redirecting my itunes library to the time capsule?

can i use time capsule to backup movies and see them wireless without redirecting my itunes library to the time capsule?

It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.
See Win 7 OS,64 Bit..Going back to ver 10.3 as I wish to use the cdbackup/restore version..I for a previous thread discussing this.

  • Can I use Time Capsule as an external HD? In this case to edit movies in FinalCut.

Can I use Time Capsule as an external HD? In this case to edit movies in FinalCut.

Yes, but it depends on the setup if you should or not.. not everything you can do you should do.
    Are you connected by ethernet?
If you use wireless this can be super slow.. and also subject to corruption of the file.
You cannot use USB to connect.
If you are using a desktop computer, then an external drive is cheap, fast and reliable.
TM can also backup your work.
Using the TC as external drive.. Time Machine (TM) no longer has the ability to backup your work.. it can use TC as a target only.
How is the TC now setup? Did you want to setup in complete isolation to existing networking? If so how are you going to get network connection to internet etc. ??
