Can I new a script in SQL Developer?

I select "new", but the SQL File is grey. My version is 1.0.14.67, OS is Windowxp
Thx

I think that you may have an unpatched version or a bad copy.
Try a clean install or checking for updates in your current version.

  • Sybase connection tab not showing in New connection option in SQL developer

    Hi,
I do not see a Sybase connection tab in New connection option in SQL developer 2.1 where as it was available in ver 1.5
Why is that? how to fix it?

    Hi,
Have you installed the JTDS JDBC driver yet into SQL Developer.
This is required before you get the connection tab for SQL Server and Sybase.
You can install the JTDS driver from the Check For Updates action.

  • NullPointerException when opening a script in SQL Developer 4.0.0.12

I recently upgraded to SQL Developer v.4.0.0.12 64 bit, and am running into some issues.
I am running this on 64 bit Windows 7. I have a 64 bit Oracle 11, and in addition have the 32 bit oracle client installed.
I made an association between the .sql file extension and sqldeveloper64W.exe.
However I frequently get a nullpointerexception when clicking on a script in the file explorer.
It seems to occur mostly if I loaded scripts into SQL Developer before.
If I close all the windows before closing SQL Developer and then click on a script in the file manager, things work (startup is arguably slower than v.3).
But in most cases either nothing happens, or I get the NullPointerException below.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Wim

  • Can't save a connection on SQL Developer 1.5

I just installed SQL Dev 1.5. The first time I run it all was fine. The second time it was giving me severe errors.
The first one was 'failed to create naming Context for db connections at url: file:/C:/Documents and Settings/thatzi/Application Data/SQL Developer/system1.5.0.53.38/o.jdeveloper.db.connection.11.1.1.0.22.49.35/connections.xml'.
The second one was 'DatabaseConnections has no JNDI context so cannot list connections.'
After I deleted the 'C:/Documents and Settings/thatzi/Application Data/SQL Developer' directory I was able to run the app one more time, but had the same problem next time I run the app.
There must be a way to fix this. Can anybody help?

I can save new connections to my existing connections.xml file, and I can save to a new connections file. I just can't save existing connections.
I looked at the xml for the old version, and compared to the new version, and they are quite different. I tried deleting the system1.5.1.54.40\o.jdeveloper.db.connection.11.1.1.0.22.49.35 directory, so it would ask me about migrating old settings again, and this time I selected the directory for the previous version, 1.5.0.53.38. The connections weren't migrated. Apparently I can't save the existing connections because the old connections.xml format is not valid. How can I migrate/convert my old connections file to work in the new version. For all I know, this could have been an existing problem from when I converted from 1.2. This is just the first time I've had an occasion to change connection info, so I might be using a connections.xml file from 1.2.
Here is one of my connection xml configs that I am unable to update:

  • Can't see package body in SQL Developer version 3.1

    Hello,
Have been scouring the boards and google for this issue for quite some time now. I think I have discovered the issue, but would like to see if a work around exists.
    Problem:
I am unable to view packages, procs, VIEW DDl, etc. of other users. When a colleague of mine uses Toad, with the EXACT same connection ID and setting, they are in fact able to see all the source code...
    What I've found:
Looking around, apparently Toad and SQL Dev work in different ways. Toad apparently uses DBA_SOURCE and DBA_OBJECTS to generate everything.
SQL Dev uses the META_DATA package to retrieve everything. Further, in order to use the meta_data package, I need the grant catalog role, or something like that.
Is there a way to set up SQL Developer to use the same method as Toad to retrieve the code? It's a fact that I WILL NOT receive the catalog permission per the DBAs... I can write out the
    select text from DBA_SOURCE where OWNER = 'OWNER' and NAME = 'OBJECT NAME';
But, I would prefer to just be able to use the tree nodes and click on objects to generate all this. Anyone know of any setting for this?

    Hi,
No doubt SQL Developer wants to be competitive with Toad but, in terms of raising red flags over inconsistencies in basic functionality, any difference versus SQL*Plus would be more surprising than versus Toad.
DBA_SOURCE and DBA_OBJECTS are public synonyms available in any standard Oracle installation, but you also need the SELECT ANY DICTIONARY privilege to get maximum benefit from them. That lets you view code in another user's schema without having an explicit privilege (like EXECUTE) on a package/procedure/function.
If you already do have such privileges (either SELECT ANY DICTIONARY, or EXECUTE or DEBUG on specific executable objects), and the Code tab is empty, then you will need to provide a test case, as Vadim indicates.
In terms of any case where SQL Developer utilizes DBMS_METADATA, my understanding is the API relies on the SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE privilege if a user does not own or otherwise have an explicitly granted privilege on an object. Developers like to use this API wherever possible in place of writing a script that might break or need maintenance to deal with future versions of the Oracle database.
I have no idea how Toad works, and I probably shouldn't speculate, but here is one scenario that could explain the case you mention without the connection user having any of the privileges noted above. Let's say the Toad client software calls a PL/SQL package that selects from DBA_SOURCE and is installed in a schema that has the SELECT ANY DICTIONARY privilege. All Toad users are granted EXECUTE on this package and therefore inherit SELECT ANY DICTIONARY in the context of running the package. This will work, but at the price of complicating installation of Toad. Also, it doesn't afford an administrator fine-grained control over metadata security.

  • Creating A New Oracle Database And Sql Developer

    Hi,
I'm a newbie to Oracle and and a not so newbie to Sql Server and Visual Studio.
I am trying to learn Oracle on my local machine. I want to create a new Oracle Database and start learning from there.
I have downloaded sql developer, the data modeler, and the Oracle Client. Could someone please provide some guidance on how to create a Oracle Database?
From the responses, it appears that none of the items I mentioned actually creates a database. Sql Server provides a free download, also a developer version for a minimal fee. What specific Oracle product would be best to provide this type of service?
    Thanks,
    Mark

Edited by: user8948230 on Jan 7, 2010 9:50 AMIn addition to downloading and installing the database software to create a database, might I also suggest you start getting familiar with the documentation.
Learning where to look things up in the documentation is time well spent investing in your career. To that end, you should drop everything else you are doing and do the following:
Go to tahiti.oracle.com. Drill down to your product and version.
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what is available here. Take special note of the "books" and "search" tabs. Under the "books" tab you will find the complete documentation library.
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what kind of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what kind of information is available there.
Do the same with the SQL Reference Manual.
Do the same with the Utilities manual.
You don't have to read the above in depth. They are reference manuals. Just get familiar with what is there to be referenced. Ninety percent of the questions asked on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes by simply searching one of the above manuals.
After you have familiarized yourself with what is available, read the "2-Day DBA" manual to help get you started.
Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
    - Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual.
    - Look in your alert log and find all the non-default initialization parms listed at instance startup. Then read up on each one of them in the Reference Manual.
    - Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. Go to the Network Administrators manual and read up on everything you see in those files.
    - When you have finished reading the Concepts Manual, do it again.
Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.

  • HOW TO : Writing simple scripts in SQL Developer??

Here is a simple script I run in SQL*Plus...
the first SQL prints the QCSID, the second script prompts for a SID which is the QCSID from the first SQL... once provided it gives me the output I want...
I just cannot do this in SQL DEVELOPER..... or Can I?
    select distinct qcsid from v$px_session;
    select sid,serial#,qcsid,qcserial#,degree,req_degree from v$px_session
    where qcsid in (select qcsid from v$px_session where sid='&sid');

    Ganesh,
Simple substitution and defines work in SQL Developer scripts.
I think the problem with running your script is that the first query results are not displayed before the window asking for the '&sid' value. That is the output to the 'screen output' tab is buffered and not synchronized with additional pop up (or dialog) windows. Is that correct?
    Currently:
You can use substitution variables in the f5 'Run Script' but no bind variables.
You can use bind variables in the f9 'Execute Statement' but no substitution statements.
You can use anonymous PLSQL blocks, and packaged functions and procedures, so you can store per session state in PLSQL packages.

  • Extracting Script from sql developer

I have to extract the script of 25 tables from a database including all its objects. How can i do this using sql developer using any script

You can try this : But you have to write DBMS_METADATA.get_ddl 25 times as cols and give alias to them
    SELECT DBMS_METADATA.get_ddl ('TABLE', 'TABLE_NAME') t1,
    DBMS_METADATA.get_ddl ('TABLE', 'TABLE_NAME') t2
    FROM DUAL;
Lets see what others suggests .. But this will get your CREATE scripts as well as will get to know as which objects being used in tables.

Also when I do File > Open, I'm not able to navigate to UNC paths via the 'Home' or 'Desktop' buttons on the left hand side of the window and am not able to navigate to a network location from the 'Locations' box.
Any ideas? I am on Windows 7.
    Thanks

  • Can't see package body in SQL Developer version 2.1.1.64

When I go to the object browser, I can see all of the package specs but can't seem to get to the package body. I can access the package body just fine through Toad, so I don't think it is an Oracle user issue. Help?

I can see any user's Package Body when I'm logged into the database as a DBA, so it must be some privilege that you need. The privilege I would have guessed you need is SELECT ANY DICTIONARY but you say you have that privilege. If you were granted that privilege through a role, make sure that the role is active, or that it is a default role.
Another role it might be looking for is EXECUTE ANY PROCEDURE, but I'm not sure. See if you can do these selects, since these are probably the views that SQL Developer is using:
    select * from dba_objects where owner = 'some owner' and object_type = 'PACKAGE BODY';
select * from dba_source where owner = ' some owner' and type = 'PACKAGE BODY';Of course, if your database administrator is willing to grant you the DBA role, that ought to do the trick - works for me. Otherwise, you and your DBA may have to try different system privileges until you find the one that works.
