Can I open a PSD file in Camera Raw?

I have searched for information on this subject and everyone says  -- "just open Open As and choose camera raw".  The problem is there is no such thing as Open As (other than Open As Smart object) in my CS5 v. 12.0.2 nor in my CS4 v. 11.02.    What gives??
In a side note I also can not open a tiff or jpeg in Camera Raw even though the preference settings indicate I should be able to do so.
Any ideas why I do not see an Open As in the file menu of either of my PS copies?

Yes, you can.  But not with Layers, obviously.  :~)
However, you have to go through the File menu in Photoshop:
File > Open
Then, in the Open dialog box, go to the bottom-LEFT button and select Camera Raw.
Do NOT select "Photoshop Raw" !  You want Camera Raw.

  • Can only open some JPEG files in Camera Raw through Bridge CS3

I'm running Bridge CS3 version 2.0.0.975. I always edit my JPEG files through Camera Raw in Bridge CS3. I only have to Right-Click on the file and select "Open in Camera Raw...". However, I've come into a situation where some jpg files will not open this way; the option is not even there.
I have made sure to tick the box in preferences under Behavior "Double-Click Edits Camera Raw Settings in Bridge", and also tick the box under Thumbnails -> Performance and File Handling "Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG and TIFF Files.
These files were originally 16bit Grayscale TIFF files, but I changed them to RGB 8bit JPEG files.
Also, I know the program works because I navigate to an older photo I worked which is a JPEG and the "Open in Camera Raw..." option is there when I Right-Click, but then I navigate back to the image I want to edit, and the option is not there.
Here are links to my screenshots of what I'm talking about. Both images in the last two screenshots are JPEG:

When I open Photoshop CS3, then go File -> Open As and change the Format Type to "Camera Raw", the JPEG files vanish and I can only see the TIF files. When I open them, it doesn't open in Camera Raw, but rather opens like a normal file would.
That's a fundamental problem right there, and a clue in all this.  You should be able to see JPEGs in the Open As Camera Raw dialog.
What happens if you type in the name?
I'm almost convinced you have a file named .jpg but with a different image format inside.  Can you put one of these files online for others to try to open?

  • Can't open D90 NEF files in Camera Raw CS3?

I've downloaded the latest version of the plug-in, and it works perfectly when opening JPEGs. However it won't open my RAW files, it says they're not recognised?

Unless it is listed in the ACR 4.6 compatibility list (in which case there is some other issue), the D90 came out after CS3 was obsolete so Adobe did not update the obsolete Camera RAW plug-in and only added D90 support to the current ACR plugin which comes with CS4.
If you want to open D90 files in an older version of Photoshop you can download the latest DNG Converter from Adobe's website, which will recognize the RAW files, and convert the NEFs to DNGs and then open those DNG copies in CS3...or update to CS4 (or wait until Spring and update to CS5--just a guess since the LR3 beta expires 4/30/10).

I was working in my school's mac but running windows, and the file was being saved in the school's network not on the computer. I thought it had been saved and I also copy and pasted the file in my hard drive to guarantee a copy but none of the are opening.

    Thanks a lot

The problem was saving over the network. Working across a network is not supported.
This is the boilerplate text often used in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.  It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Bridge (2.1.1.9) in CS3 10.0.1 won't open psd file in Camera Raw

Why is File/"Open In Camera Raw" greyed out when I try to open a psd file in Bridge?  It will open a jpeg file in Camera Raw.  Thanks

As far as I know it is not an option to open PSDs in ACR.
It has to be JPEG or TIFF. (Or raw of course!)

  • How to open jpg, tiff files in camera raw from elements 10 organizer

How to open JPG, TIFF files in camera raw from Elements 10 organizer.

Thanks for that Damead, I agree with you that Organiser is real pain (there is a total lack of intuitiveness if that is  the correct word).
For my own work I use 'Lightroom' for around 90% of the time, only going into PSE10 for the 10% difficult bits the Lightroom can't handle.
I only needed to sort out the JPEG file opening method within PSE10 for some freinds in a small Photo Group that I run in Woodhall Spa, UK. 50% of the 12 members are beginners & a number of them do not have Raw capability on their Camera's, but now they can get their JPEG's into Camera Raw within PSE10 they have the same simple tabular form of adjustment sliders (not as many as in Lightroom of cause) but it gets over the labourious problem of going thru the PSE10's individual tool selection process each and every time since we are trying to get everyone in the Group working with individual Tools rather than the 'Auto' functions. We do this so that they learn what they are doing rather than staying 'dumb&happy' within Auto all the time & they also learn how to get more detailed control for each photo.
Ref. your comments on file handling/usage, I agree with your comments. Its far and away much more preferable to set up a file structure in 'Finder" (or in 'Explorer' if still using Windows) that you understand so you always know how to find the files. Also, I also never ever use the Camera Auto Load programme but physically 'drag & drop' photo files direct from the 'card' into the file system so I always know thier place (ie: they go into the location I want, not that which the Auto Loader wants).
As regards your comment about 'Lightroom', I don't have any problems at all since I just imported the whole of my photo file structure into the Lightroom Library Catalouge and then it automatically shows up on the LHS of the screen, still in that format, so you can search it direct within Lightroom and display all of the photo's in variuos arrangements and sizes; everything is as easy to find as it is in 'Finder' plus of cause you have all the 'Tagging' possibilities to use as well. As you add more new files into the 'Finder' structure, all you need to do in Lightroom is reimport, starting 1 level up from the new files and Lightroom will find the new files that need loading (ignoring the older ones already in the Library at that or lower levels) then 1 click and its done.
Your comments about getting others to follow a set file structure is very pertinant and also applies to evrything else that one ever does apart from just photo work; the times I have had to help others find info/files etc on their PC's because they don' know the location of anything is too many to contemplate.

  • Photoshop Opens 8bit TIFF files as Camera Raw

My normal workflow consists of opening RAW files in ACR, making adjustments, then moving on to Photoshop where I apply retouching and build clipping paths. I then save the file as an 8bit TIFF. I rarely reopen these 8bit TIFFs again, but when I did so recently what I encountered was not what I expected.
My Photoshop (CS6) is opening 8bit TIFF files as Camera Raw when selected by "right click" followed by "Open with Photoshop CS6". I remember being able to open 8bit TIFF files directly in Photoshop, but I think this change has occurred since installing CS6.
Again, files in question began as 16bit Raw files, but were worked on in Photoshop CS6 (retouching) and saved with clipping paths. This would reduce them to 8bit files. When placed in page layout, clipping paths work properly, confirming that paths are intact.
When I want to open the files again - say from Bridge or a Finder window - by the method "right click - Open with Photoshop CS6", the file is opened first in Camera Raw, and then in Photoshop, and the path(s) is missing.
I can open these TIFF files and access Paths but only if I locate and select the file from within Photoshop (File/ Open.../). The Open window gives "Format" as Camera Raw (which it isn't, having been saved as 8bit file). If I override  format to "TIFF", the file opens with clipping path shown.
What might be going on here and how can I correct it?

    DaleH wrote:
I set the preference to automatically open JPEGs and TIFFs with settings.
That's the reason for Adobe Camera Raw being automatically used to open TIFFs which were previously sent from ACR to Photoshop. The TIFFs have ACR settings because they originated as images generated from raw files by ACR. If you don't want ACR to be invoked when opening such files by a right-click then set the preference to "Disable TIFF support".
    DaleH wrote:
I didn't manually set the bit depth.
When I saved the file with a clipping path it automatically dropped down to 8bit.
That's not happening here with CS6. 16 bits per channel are maintained when saving TIFF from Ps, regardless of there being a clipping path. Are you certain that the ACR workflow options definitely said 16-bit, as shown below, when ACR initially generated the images from raw and passed them to Ps?

  • Photoshop CS Extended can't open some PSD files

    Hi,
Yesterday I have created a new PSD file and worked on it and finally saved the file, but now i can't open the file any more. PS always fails to open the file, because of an internal error.
I have tried to open some other PSD files, but 3 of 4 files (on my current HDD) didn't work to open and i don't know why. All of those other PSD files are at least 1 month old and PS could open these files. The last time i have opened these files was two weeks ago. The one PSD file, that worked has the following properties:
    image: 1179x1528, 72ppi,8bit,RGB, 15,04 MB
and the files that don't work have the following properties:
    image1: 454x340, 71ppi, 16bit, RGB, sRGB (profile), 1,17 MB
    image2: 1280x1024, 71ppi, 8bit, RGB, sRGB, 1,92 MB
    image3: 1191x1644, 71ppi, 16bit, RGB, sRGB, 12,02 MB
I have got, the meta-data out of Adobe Bridge. I can see the preview Image and the thumbnails in the open-dialog of PS. I tried to open the file with other applications like Paintshop Pro and PhotoImpact and both couldn't open them. Paintshop Pro quits, because it doesn't support the "color model".
I don't know, what else i can do to open these files. I looked around the forum but couldn't find any solution for my problem.
Does anyone know a solution for my problem ?

PS: I have deleted the pref-file of PS and still it didn't work.

Dear all. After getting the same problem and read all possible solutions online with no success finally I got rid of this problem successfully and Now it is working perfectly again, and I hope It will work for you all.
    Here it goes:
BACKGROUND (my case): PS CS3 installed (Premium-Extended), Win Vista 32 Bits. For months it was working perfectly until yesterday, when the app stopped when attempting opening some PSD files. Some other CS3 apps either stopped. 1st I thought it was some kind of file corruption issue.
After 3 uninstall-reinstall attempts of the whole CS3 and still troubleshooting, I went to the Vista Error Log. Regarding PS CS3 there was a DLL file named "CoolType.dll" which was suspicious to be the main cause of this ****.
Making a research, it relates to installed Fonts in Windows, that gave me the clue to all of it.
Yesterday, I installed fonts while working with PS CS3 Im now pretty sure that this process someway altered the Cooltype.dll file, or fonts were not installed properly.
SOLUTION (my case): locate and uninstall recent fonts (which may have been the problem). NOW my PS3 CS3 is working more than PERFECT!!
HOPE THIS CAN HELP. I think this topic regards some kind of failed font installation. Check it out and remember if you have modified something.

  • How do I open my TIF file into Camera Raw from Bridge?

Trying to follow a tutorial on editing an HDR image in photoshop. When instructed to open the TIF image into Camera Raw from Bridge, I don't get the option when I right click. What is going on here?

I was talking about an advanced action, which is not loaded externally but executed on runtime (will be translated to AS). So this will only work if you can pass the value of the variable containing the slide number you want to the SWF. For that you'll need JavaScript and I'm not that acquainted with JS. Have a look at Jim Leichliter's blog:
    http://captivatedev.com/series/captivate-javascript-series/
In Captivate you create an advanced action to be triggered on entering the first slide, that will jump to the wanted slide number. If you can figure out how to pass the slide number, could help with the advanced action, I know them rather well:

After "save as" a psd file, I am unable to open it.  "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."..  "There was a problem reading the layer data.  Read the composite data instead ?"  It is no problem for me to open psd files but after saving it is not possible....?

I don't understand if the older version was able to open the PSD it should be able to save the psd.  I can believe an old version of Photoshop not being able to open a newer version of Photoshop save psd file when newer features were used and saved into a PSD file.
Your wording confuses me even the context does not seem to make sense to me.

  • How can I open a psd file with layers in touch?

I want to edit a psd file with layers in photoshop touch. Is this possible?

No. (Kind of, sort of.) You can export PS Touch projects for import into desktop Photoshop and have the layers intact for further editing but you cannot do the reverse; any imported PSD will be automatically flattened. (I'm guessing this was done to prevent crashing. PS Touch supports 12 layers max vs. the potential thousands available in desktop Photoshop.)

  • How can one convert a PSD file into a RAW or DNG file?

Lightroom does not assemble panoramas.  One must use an external editor,eg, Photoshop Elements, to construct a panorama.  Lightroom prepares the selected images by converting them to PSD files before sending them to the Elements Editor.  When the panorama is achieved, it cannot be saved as a RAW nor DNG file even if either of those formats were the original data format type in Lightroom.  Thus when the panorama is imported back into Lightroom  it is brought back as the PSD or something of your choosing; but you cannot choose a RAW nor DNG format.  The result is a folder in Lightroom with a hodge-podge of formats.
Question:  How can the PSD file panorama be converted into a RAW or DNG file in this transfer from an outside editor to Lightroom?

That simply cannot be done. The conversion has to take place in order for Photoshop to create the panorama. Photoshop, by itself, without Camera Raw, cannot edit raw image data. By the time an image is opened in Photoshop is no longer raw image data. Photoshop is not capable of saving raw image data. The best thing to do is perform is much of the work as possible using using Lightroom. When I do a panorama image, I highlight all of the images and use the menu option to match total exposures. Then I do as much as possible on those images in Lightroom. Once the images leave Lightroom the raw editing is finished. Anything from that point onward that is done in Photoshop must be saved to a different file format.
