Can I partition to boot into 2 versions of OSX? 10.3.9 AND latest Leopard?

Here's what I'd like to do - I have a Powerbook G4 12" 1.33 and I want to get the latest version of OS X Leopard but also need to run Panther 10.3.9 too so with all this talk of bootcamp and the like for running win XP from a separate partition I wondered is it possible to do the same with 2 versions of OZ X?
I don't mind having to start from scratch and reinstall everything - I'll have the install disks for both versions.

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Yes, it is possible. Whether it is advisable or not depends on the size of your HDD. If your HDD is not very big you are likely to end up with partitions that are too small to be practical. So please post back with your HDD size. An option would be to install one of the larger HDDs, something between 100 GB to 160 GB or even 250 GB.
In any case, the answer is yes, it is possible.
Post back with the information requested, then I can give you complete step-by-step directions for partitioning etc.

  • Can the MBP 13 boot into earlier versions of the OS via firewire?

Apologies if this is addressed elsewhere, but I can't find a definite answer.
I have the current v. of the MBP 13 (just purchased this week.) I would like to use it to boot into 10.4.x on an external drive via firewire. I've tried every which way, and it just doesn't seem to want to do it.
(I can select the disk/system in the start up disk pane, but the result is a stalled blank screen and the operation has to be aborted. The external disk also appears when starting with the option key, but when I click on it, the cursor freezes.)
This used to work perfectly with my old intel white macbook. It appears that the new MBPs can't boot into previous OSs. Is that the case? I just want to make sure it's not something I'm doing wrong.
(The reason I want to do it is that my admittedly old Adobe stuff (Photoshop/Dreamweaver/etc) won't run with 10.6 and I can't afford to upgrade it at the moment. I can still use those programs with the old macbook but it is quite literally crumbling to pieces on my lap despite layers and layers of duct tape and it's not gonna last long.)
So: can the MPB 13 boot into earlier OSs or not? Anybody know?

    Is that the case?
    Yes.

I was using the newest version on OSX 10.7.5 and I was in full screen mode and viewing a photo and it was impossible to exit full screen. This happened at 11:03pm on Friday April 12, 2013. I deleted this from my apps and then deleted iphoto from my purchases in macbook app store the search it the app store and it says it has still been installed. What can I do to fix it?

Well deleting it from your machine was not the way to go.
Deleting it from your Purchases List was definitely not the way to go.
So, I'm not really sure how you're going to reinstall it.
But figure that out and we can try help. Contact App Store support. There's a link on the right hand side of the App Store Window. They should be able to get it back on your purchases list so you can reinstall it.

  • Unable to reformat my boot partition when booted into recovery

I need to reformat my Mac OS X partition for a clean install and when I boot into the recovery partition to do so I am unable to erase the partition.  Some times in disk utility it shows as greyed out (unmounted) and will not allow me to mount.  Then other times it will show mounted and I will be unable to unmount and erase.  Any body dealt with this before.  Help is much appreciated.

    Hi,
So I tried to reformat with the SL disk in and I was given the error.  This operation requires an umounted disk.  Now the Disk is mounted but the Mac OS X partition that I want to erase is mounted I think.  Is the way around that to unmount the entire disk and then try erase the partiton?  I have a Bootcamp partition with a lot of university work and programming programs etc so I would really like to avoid an entire disk reformat.
    Thanks again,

Backup your user data files off the machine to a storage drive (not only TimeMachine as it might fail to restore) and disconnect everything else.
Reboot the computer and hold command option r keys down (wired or built in keyboard) on a Ethernet conection to your router or modem (power off/on modem to reset) use Disk Utility there to Repair your internal drive.
    Reboot the machine normally.
Use Disk Utility and select the internal Macintosh HD partition, then click Erase Free Space (Zero) and move the slider one space to the right and Erase. You can't erase the entire Macintosh HD while booted from it, so your data is safe, this will only erase the FREE space. This will take some time so let it complete.
Next head to BootCamp and attempt to partition again, if it fails, then see this User Tip of mine to shift OS X data up.
BootCamp: "This disc can not be partitioned/impossible to move files."
If your still having problems, it's likely a bad drive and or a gltich in the 10.8.3

  • Can't drag anymore mp3 into ITunes version 11.1.138

I now have ITunes Version 11.1.138 but I used to have an earlier version 8 before. At that time I was able to simply drag an mp3 (from whichever pc file)  into  Itunes which also inserted the same mp3 into my 160G Classic IPod. Now with ITunes Version 11, it no longer works. Now I have to click in ITunes File tab>Add File to Library = Only then will the mp3 go to Itunes and IPod.
But that's not the end of it.
I now have an additional file in Computer/Local Disk C/ Ipod Music  with so far 46.3GB which I don't need since the mp3 are already in other Mp3 files.
Also this new IPod music file creates a new sub-file every time I insert an mp3 in ITunes & IPod.  The worst thing is the sub-file is identified by a title like F00 - F01-F02  and on and on. Each of these sub-files  (when I open them) show the track simply by 4 letters like CHOO or JDWT as example; thus no title or description like I have for all my mp3s  ie., ''Gary Peacock - Tales of Another - 01 - Vignette''
In other words I can't even Identify them anymore.
Am I doing something wrong or is this the new M.O. ?
Help please and Happy Holidays to All with Yours.

    Hello Ed,
Re:  your 2nd question:  If you mean taking the Gary Peacock mp3 and copy it to the Library Itune Folder = no problem. The full mp3 listing is properly shown.
But if you mean going to ITunes and ''Automatically Add to ITunes'' folder I can't see any such tab in ITunes tabs or sub-tabs.
Re: your 1st comment: Not seeing that phenomenon...... quite strange on my part. it does not insert by dragging.
I even tried to go back to an earlier version installation (after uninstalling version 11 and cleaning  registry) and I'm getting a message that it's now impossible to go back to an earlier version. Can you beleive this.
Yours truly, an old 78yrs old geezer with puter experience is bewildered for a first time and embarrassed.
I'm tempted to delete that Ipod Music file of some 46.3GB but am afraid to loose all music in my Ipod which is not connected at the moment.
I have now connected my IPod to my puter and tried dragging an mp3 file to Itunes it still does not work.

  • Can i partition my mbp into three parts?

I already have my MacHD drive, the recovery drive, and a boot camp drive running windows. I want to partition a small amount and run centos linux on it. Is it possible? can i use bootcamp? Also, does anyone know if i need linux support drivers much like when doing boot camp and needing windows support drivers?

Boot Camp Assistant is for Windows. My recommendation is to use a VM like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox to install Linux.

  • Can I partition a LUN into 2 and create 2 diskgroups

    Hi everyone.
I have a LUN that I want to share the space across 2 ASM diskgroups.
The LUN is from an EMC SNA and presented using multipathing, and appears as device emcpowera
Normally, I would create a single diskgroup per LUN, but in this case, is there any reason why I cant do the following?
    1. fdisk /dev/emcpowera and create 2 equal size partions
    2. oracleasm createdisk DG_DATA1 /dev/emcpowera1
    3. oracleasm createdisk DG_DATA2 /dev/emcpowera2
    4. Create diskgroups on each of DG_DATA1 and DG_DATA2 ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
While 2 diskgroups (one for DATA and one for FRA) is best practices from Oracle:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/asm-10gr2-bestpractices.pdf
I personally would not go with only one LUN per diskgroup.
    2 reasons:
-> It is best practice that all LUNs in a diskgroup should be approximately the same size, since ASM will automatically re balance the diskgroup based on a percentage for filling.
And if you need to increase the space it is more difficult to increase a lun online (since some processes might not be accepting the change without a reboot), than to simply add another one.
Now if you take one big LUN and need space (and choose not to increase the volume) you should add a LUN with the same size... resulting in maybe waisting a lot of space, just for a few megabytes needed additionally.
So I vote for using more (around 4) LUNs just to be more flexible in increasing the space.
-> Second reason are the I/O characteristica of the OS. Sometimes it is easier for an OS to handle the I/O if there are multiple LUNs than just one.
PS: It is totally o.k. to leave the mirroring to the storage system (if no other special requirements, like host based mirroring are needed) and use extarnal redundancy.
    Just my 2 cents...
    Sebastian

  • In vsn 6.0.2 how can I paste a link into the body of a Yahoo e-mail and have the pasted result appear as a link?

    o/s Windows XP Home
    vsn of Firefox 6.0.2
    Step 1) open firefox
Step 2) copy link from address bar into clipboard
Step 3) compose message in Yahoo
Step 4) paste contents of clipboard into body of the e-mail
result: the pasted value does NOT become a hyperlink
<on same pc, with same contents in clipboard>
    Step 5) open IE
Step 6) compose message in Yahoo
Step 7) paste contents of clipboard into body of the e-mail
result: the pasted value becomes a hyperlink ... the fact that the link becomes a hyperlink in the IE browser makes me think that there may be something in the Firefox browser that is controlling whether the pasted value becomes a link.
I'm not sure, but I believe the update to firefox 6.0.2 was with the past few days.
I'm not sure, but I do not believe the symptoms from steps 1 - 4 were present a few days ago
    Questions:
    1) could this feature have been introduced in 6.0.2?
    2) I would prefer it if the pasted value would become a
hyperlink when working in firefox; what steps do I need to take to make this happen?
    Thank you

Now Tony, I know you can't hear my tone on a forum post but I was not complaining, simply stating facts . This change brought several people in my office to a grinding halt in a long established workflow that is really rather simple (and I thought was already assumed from the original post above ):
    1) Select a set of records in FileMaker Pro 12 and export only their e-mail addresses as a CSV file.
    2) Open that CSV file in Excel.
    3) Copy the column of e-mail address.
    4) paste into the appropriate recipient field in Mail.
    5) Send
If I were to complain it would be about Apple's typically opaque approach to updates. There is no granular explanation of why changes were made or even "what" changes were made.
Complaining is futile since Apple is Apple and is unlikely to change, but sometimes it is cathartic to "shout into the void" .
I had thought about doing something with a formula in Excel and your suggestion was simple and helpful. Again, however, it is only a workaround for a long established helpful behavior that Apple has inexplicably broken/removed in Mavericks Mail.
I, and the other posters here, would love to have the capability back rather than have to add previously unneeded steps to our workflows.
Ultimately we may add scripting steps to the FileMaker side to export the address lists with commas inserted already if Apple ends up having permanently removed this feature.

  • I bought a used white flat screen imac (PPC with OS10.5.8.  I had to replace the harddrive from storm damage.  How can I find/download a full install version of 10.5 to format and load the new hard-drive?  Currently comes on with ? screen.

I have a white 17' flat panel g5 imac power pc, I recently bought used.  It had OS 10.5.8.  Due to a storm the hard drive was damaged and I replace with new hd.
I did not get a system disc or other support discs with the machine. How or where can I find or download a new-install version of OS 10.5 or up to 10.5.8 that will work with the PPC?  Thanks.

Call the Apple Store and ask them to sell you a copy, you can then use the combo updater   or you can buy a copy on eBay, but make sure it's the black retail copy and not a grey machine specific disc.

  • I recently browsed iTunes UK and now can't get back to iTunes US version.  I restarted my Mac and whenever I open iTunes store it is the UK version. I can't open an account there because it won't let me use by email address twice.

I recently browsed ITunes UK store and now can't get back to my iTunes US store.  The UK store won't accept my email address as it is in use.  So, effectively, I can't make an iTunes purchase.  And, this password changing is madness. Everytime I sign in iTunes doesn't recognize my password and so I have to get a new one even though I've answered the useless security questions. Has anyone solved this problem before?

Funny how this seems to be one of the most-asked questions on the Internet. In most cases, no answer is ever checked as "Correct," either.  Most answers, as on this page, say to click the flag at the bottom right-hand corner of any store page.  The problem?  There's only one flag!!!  And it's the one of the country we don't want to be in!!!
Just in case this helps someone:  what worked for me was to sign in. It then told me my id was not valid for this country, and switched me back to the US.  How I was ever able to buy something from the UK store in the first place is beyond me.
By the way, Apple, experiences like this, and many, many other horrible ones with iTunes, is why those of us who do not live in the Apple world continue to stick to their Microsoft PCs.

    Why not update to 10.7.5?

i did this iPad syncing with iTunes already - no result
    ios 7 ipad 3 Cellular 32

Make sure you backup prior to following the steps below:
I'd recommend uninstalling iTunes on your PC, restarting if recommended, then going to the Start button and typing Regedit and searching for anything which mentions iTunes and deleting any mention of it from your Registry as it sounds like something from a previous version of iTunes is still hanging around in your Registry, however be very careful not to delete anything else as this could result in serious issues for you computer.
Once done and all entries for iTunes are deleted from the Registry, check C:\program files or where iTunes was installed and delete the iTunes folder if still present.
Then go here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/ and download iTunes.
    Good luck,
    Steve

  • Can Mac mini boot into 64-bit kernel

    http://macperformanceguide.com/SnowLeopard-64bit.html says:
To determine if your Mac has 32-bit or 64-bit firmware, copy/paste the following command into Terminal:
    ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
    ...output:
    | | "firmware-abi" = <EFI64>
As shown above, the firmware-abi has the value EFI64, indicating that my Mac Pro is 64-bit capable. If it reads EFI32, then your Mac cannot be booted into a 64-bit kernel.
...well, my Mac mini displays that EFI64 64-bit info, but when booting with the "64" keys down it nevertheless uses the 32-bit kernel.
So can the Mac mini boot into 64-bit kernel?

What you are missing is that Apple has written into the boot ROM for certain Macs which meet the criteria to not be able to boot with the 64-bit kernel. The Mac mini is not allowed to boot into 64-bit mode by Apple. There is a list of non-pro Macs hard coded into the EFI boot firmware that tells it not to allow these Macs to boot into 64-bit mode. The Mac mini is on the list! Try as you may the Mac mini will not do it without a hack.
If you google this issue you can find a hack to rewrite the boot firmware and allow the mini to boot into 64-bit mode. It can be dangerous to your mini if you make a mistake!
    Here is one hack;
