Can I password protect printer and monitor settings?

I am the computer instructor at an elementary school. One of the teachers has a problem with a student who continually changes her preferred printer, her dispslay options, etc. She is running OS9, and I wondered if there was a way to protect her preferences like there is in OSX. She doesn't want to set up multiple users. Is there any way to do this?
Thanks for any input.

Hi, twirlingelephants. Using a utility such as File Buddy 7.6, which could be run from a CD rather than installed on the Mac(s) in question (installing it where students could use it would be the height of folly), your teacher friend could set the Invisible flag on any files she doesn't want tampered with, including the Monitors control panel, the Chooser, even the whole Control Panels folder. Then those files or folders wouldn't appear at all in the Finder, the Apple menu, etc., even though they were still in place and functioning. The student's access to settings would literally vanish. He might be able to guess what had happened, but unless students are able to install software on the school computers willy-nilly (which certainly shouldn't be true), there wouldn't be anything he could do about it.
Of course the student would probably decide to vent his frustration in some other way, so Don's suggestion of unpleasant consequences is certainly appropriate. But if the miscreant's identity is unknown, diverting his vandalism into some other realm could conceivably make him easier to spot.

Hey guys, how can i password protect my files in external hard drive? I want to access those files both from mac and windows PC!

If you want a cross-platform solution that doesn't require the use of third-party software, use an external drive with hardware encryption. The device will have either a physical key or a numeric keypad. I don't have a specific recommendation.

  • Can I password protect my iMovie 9 or 11 event and/or project?

I have created an event in iMovie09 using the internal MACbook camera.  I want to password protect the event so that no one can open/view the movie without the appropriate password - I need to provide 2 levels of security for the movie for privacy purposes.  Can I save the file outside of iMovie, password protect it, and then import it into iMovie when I'm ready to view?  I'm open to multi-step ways to make it happen!

    you have diff. options:
    • what I would do, simply purchase some small 2.5" usb-drive, drag Project&Events FROM WITHIN iMovie onto it and put ext.drive in a 'secure' place. whenever you have to work with these Events, plug it in, you're done.
    • … if Events are small, and wallet big, you get 128GBs usb-flash mem-sticks .... tape the stick under a drawer (omg! I told the secret place!!)
    • if you need that extra grain of security: after transfering the two folders, create a disk-image with the disk-utility, apply a secure password, drag both folders into it - you can NOT work from such a disk-image, you have to have it manually open and drag both folders out of it into original location.
btw: you lose the pw, all data is lost! no way to restore it … ok, some friends in Fort Meade could ……
    • finally: why keeping this stuff at all? complete the Project, export the final movie, erase all traces. keep the movie where and how you like (see above suggestions).

On the page where you enter username and password after entering and pressing "Log in" the page just stays in place. If you look at the error log you see

  • Can't Password Protect Configuration Menu

    hi
i recently reset my base station and reconfigured everything
i can access the net fine and have no problems
i created a hidden network and now want to password protect my base station settings in the admin utility since i live in an apartment complex and i can see my neighbors base stations in my menu - i've opened the configure file and changed the password numerous times, yet every time i go to check the configure file, it never asks me for a password - it used to prompt me for a password before i reset it and i am not sure why it won't take a password now
    any ideas?
    thanks

iBook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   no problem accessing net
iBook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   no trouble otheer than this

Probably because you checked the box to enable the Mac to remember the password.
Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access
Delete the relevant entry for the Admin Utility and the next time you try and configure the base station you will be asked for a password.
Also be aware a hidden network with no wireless network password (not the same as the base station configuration password) should not be considered a secure network and I would recommend that you use WPA.

  • Can you password protect pages folders

When you create a folder in pages, can you password protect the folder, or it only that documents can have a password?

Only the file can be password protected from within Pages. If you don't want the file to open on your Mac without the password, then do not check, “Remember this password in my keychain,” in the password dialog. Record your document password where you can retrieve it — in case your forget, or if using keychain, in case it becomes damaged.
You can password protect (and encrypt) a folder that contains Pages documents, whether they are password protected or not.
In Finder, press shift+command+U to launch the Utilities Window.
    Launch Disk Utility
File > New > Disk Image from Folder…
From the Select Folder to Image dialog, select the folder and click Image
From the New Image from Folder dialog
    Image Format
Compressed - folder will be read-only with no ability to add documents later
    Read/write - intuitive
    Encryption: 256-bit AES Encryption
    Save
In the new password dialog, set your password
You should strive for password complexity that shows strength as green
Record your password where you can retrieve it.
Again, the caveat about keychain as mentioned above
A new disk image will appear with the name you gave it, and a .dmg extension
    Double-click for the password challenge
The disk image will mount on your desktop just like an installer. Double-click to open.If you chose Image format as read/write, you can drag additional Pages documents into this open folder
Right-click on the mounted image and choose Eject to close it
You can edit Pages documents in-place in the mounted folder, but you will get a warning about space in the image container. If you want to increase the disk image size, open it in Disk Utility. It willl appear below the line in the left panel. Select the .dmg there, and from the Images menu, choose Resize…, and adjust accordingly.

  • How do I create a folder for private documents which can be password protected?

how do I create a folder which can be password protected please?

You can do this by creating a protected disk image.
    Instructions here http://www.macworld.com/article/154559/2010/10/password_protect_folders.html
Or you can buy and use software like this one: http://www.apimac.com/mac/secretfolder/
The disk image option is free and easy to do.

  • Can i password protect photos?

Wanting to password protect photos, and remove from camera roll. Is this possible?

There is no way to password protect photos on iPhones.  Why would you need this when you should be passcode locking the entire phone?
You can remove photos from Camera Roll by connectint to a computer with a photo import app, importing them to that app and deleting from Camera Roll (most apps will do this).  The photos are no longer on the phone at all.  You can sycn them back to the phone in a new folder, but not password protected.

  • I can't password protect my Playbook

Hey guys I posted over at Crackberry but couldn't find anything there, hoping somebody can help me here:
I noticed this with OS 2.0 that my playbook refuses to go in standby and password lock. This is whether I hit the power button to go in standby, or hit standby or the lock button through the software key.
And when I hit lock, I can always swipe and wake the device. I have a password set and its also set for 10 minutes and it doesnt lock at all.
I cannot make it lock right away, nor can I get it to lock after the set time of 10 minutes.
This is really frustrating because I cannot have this darn thing wide open for anybody to pick up and look through.
I don't know what problem this is. I have done a full security wipe two times now, reset the thing multiple times over (through the button holds or software button reset). And I have reinstalled the software.
Do not understand what is going on. Anybody have a clue? I just want the darn thing to lock. And on the side matter, it looks like it is always on and not going on standby, so when I lock the screen and put it away, it will be super warm and the screen will be on when I pull it out its case (blackberry leather envelope)
SUPER FRUSTRATED!~!!!!! Ahhhh. Please help. Couldnt find anything from searching the forums.
Basically I have already done the hard and soft reboots on the playbook and I cannot password protect at all. It wakes up to the home screen regardless of how long of the time I set it to go password protect. And when I hit lock or the power button, it doesn't password protect and can wake up to the homescreen.

Have you done a power off software reload?
if this dont work then you have a device issue most likely and need to contact RIM for support.
First I would like you to do a Back Up of your PlayBook using your computer and BlackBerry Desktop Software.
This can be downloaded for free from http://us.blackberry.com/apps-software/desktop/
After the Back Up is complete I need you to unplug your PlayBook and then push and hold down the Power Button until the unit Force Powers Off.
Now, while Desktop Software is still open on your computer and the PlayBook Powered Off, Connect the PlayBook to your computer.
You should see and error screen from Desktop Software pop up that has the options to Retry, Update, or Cancel.
    QUICKLY choose the Update option.
This will erase all the information off of your PlayBook and Re-Write the Software back onto it. Once it's complete your PlayBook will need to go back through the setup wizard, and you can then perform a restore using Desktop Software to return your information. The only thing that won't come back after the restore are the apps that you downloaded from App World but they can be easily Re-Installed using the My World feature in App World.
Click here to Backup the data on your BlackBerry Device! It's important, and FREE!

  • Can I password protect an email I send?

I would like to send emails with attachments that can only be viewed by the receiver once they enter an agreed upon password. The password can be the same or different each time.

You cannot password protect an email message, but you can encrypt messages to the recipients key.

Alternatively you can possibly password protect a document and send it as an attachment, but protection may be weak.

  • Could someone please tell me how can I password protect individual folders?

    Hi
I use a MacBook Pro 17" with MacOSX(10.4.7) Could someone please tell me how can I password protect individual folders?
    Thanks
    Adnan Yousuf

    Adnan,
One way to do this is to use Disk Utility to make a password protected disk image of the folder(s) that you need to secure. This is probably the easiest way to do it.
Go to Disk Utility and choose "New Image" and select encryption.

  • How do I transfer my MacBook Air to my wife so she can sync her iTunes account and other settings with her iPad Mini?

How do I transfer my MacBook Air to my wife so she can sync her iTunes account and other settings with her iPad Mini?

You can change the account shortname to whatever you wish to use.
As you can see from my example above. Once you click on the Create User button a new account will be created.
She will need to get her own Apple ID setup so when she starts with iTunes she can open her own iTunes account unless you both want to share the use of the same Apple ID. This can create a bit of confusion if you have your own iPads or iPhones or iPods. As you have discovered it's pretty much one iDevice with one Apple ID.
As for the iTunes library that becomes a more complicated issue.
