Can I place a 13" retina display panel into my 2011 MBP?

I was wondering (moreso wishing and hoping) if it's possible to have my 2011 MBP display panel replaced with the recent 13" retina display panel. My 2011 MBP is just out of warranty and its display panel has developed a green line issue that seems too common among MBP displays.
Thanks!

The best option would be to take this to Apple and pay for it to be fixed. The display will be expensive to fix, so if you feel you can, purchasing a replacement from eBay or somewhere online would be possible. You can not fit a Retina display on as the hings and connectors are different, and even if they were not, the firmware and drivers your Mac will have (and continue to have as the model number tells the system you should have a standard display) can not drive the higher resolution efficiently. This would lead to performance and battery issues.
Consider buying a desktop stand and display for your Mac as well and use the built in display only when necessary. Small problems with LCDs usually develop into worse situations quickly.
Good luck!

    Can I replace 15 inch retina display that broke on my sons Mac , if so how much

    You will have to take it to an Apple store genius bar and talk with the techs, or take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider and get their estimate.  Typical is on the order of $500 in the US.
    This is not a user replaceable item, doing so will void any warranty and all further support from Apple.  They are pretty emphatic about that no further support thing so be sure to use an authorized repair service.

  • Can I turn off the retina display feature on the new MacBook Pro?

    Hello,
    I recently got the new MacBook Pro with Retina display. I love how fast this machine performs, it's weight and thickness.
    However, working in Advertisement, this machine's made my line of work a bit too pixelated. There are no websites optimized for this new display, making portfolios hard to see as the retina screen makes things blurry and fussy looking. Not only that, but non of the Adobe products are ready for this technology either. It's hard to open a piece of software you'd like to design with and work with pixelated tools (photoshop among others).
    I can do without the Ethernet port, optical drive and the lack of a locking system for this machine. But, making things uglier on the web isn't something I'm willing to sacrifice since is my line of work. Any idea of a third party that can turn this feature off?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, this beauty is going back to the Apple store.

    sorry, but the 2880x1800 is hardware; in fact what makes non-optimized sites look (relativly) ugly is that to upscale the graphics to the apparent resolution of everything else each pixel is represented by 4 pixels, and as you know being in graphics, upscaling pictures is generally results in ugly.
    Back to my point, there's no software to make the display lose 75% of its pixels; you'll either have to use another machine and/or wait for sites to optomize their graphics for the retina displays...which may or may never happen depending on the sites awareness/closeness with Apple's technology

  • AIR for iOS: How can I distribute for only Retina Displays?

    I am nearing completion of an app I have designed for iOS and tested on my iPhone 4. I bought a 2nd gen iPhone so I could test on both screen resolutions (320x480 and 640x960) before discovering AIR for iOS does not support very old iOS devices (I believe the rule is it must be iOS 4+).
    My question is how is distribution handled if the app will not run on these older models? Wouldn't people with a 2nd gen iPhone still have access to an app that I publish via AIR for iOS and then be angry when it is not supported on their device? Has anyone run into this issue?

    AIR 2.5+ requires iPhone 3GS+ to run. It's based on the CPU inside that
    device and newer which includes a NEON SIMD coprocessor - a requirement
    of newer AIR builds on all platforms (newer than PFI/AIR 2.0, which
    shipped with Flash Pro CS5.0).
    There should be a "resolution" drop down in the AIR for iOS Settings
    dialog, if you updated your PFI in CS5.0 or upgraded to CS5.5. You can
    select "High" to get iPhone retina display support. This will not enable
    iPad 3 retina support though.
    Kevin N.
    Edit: I didn't make it clear that the device requirements are set in your app, and enforced by the App Store - users on old devices will never see your AIR apps in their app store, and if they link into the App Store, they'll get an explaination of why they can't install the app (it'll be either the OpenGL ES 2.0 requirement, or the CPU requirement - it's similar to if you try to install an iPad only app on an iPhone). Android actually works the same way - old/cheap ARMv6 device users will not see your ARMv7 requiring app in their Google Play/Marketplace app.

  • Will the new iPad Mini with Retina Display fit into the older iPad Mini case?  (Will it be the same size?)

    I am planning to purchase the new iPad Mini with Retina Display when it comes out this month.  I am curious to know whether it will fit into the older iPad Mini cases that are currently available.  I wasn't sure whether I should go ahead and buy a case, or if I should wait due to a size difference.  Thanks!

    The 'old' case will cover the rear microphone, but the new and currently sold iPad mini smart case has the cutout for the rear microphone. It can clearly be seen on mini Smart Case photo.
    I had a black mini SmartCase on order at the time I posted the above.  Although my mini-retina won't arrive for a couple of weeks the case arrived today.  I has the cutout for the rear microphone just as shown in the images on the Apple Store.

  • Retina display for office mac 2011

    I recently purchased a Mac Book Pro with Retina Display.  When I hook up an external montitor Microsoft Office Excel is blurry as is Word.
    Mac Book Pro screen,  same thing.  Does Office Mac 2011 upgrade really fix the problem?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    Office 2011 needs an update to be compatible with Retina display. Install the most recent version from the Microsoft site > http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads Or open an Office app, and go to Help menu (on the menu bar) > Check for Updates. Run it twice

  • Can the 64gb iPad with Retina Display replace a laptop?

    I'm looking into getting the new ipad to use primarily as a laptop.. i would be doing alot of word processing, keynote presentations and the odd imovie. i'm planning on keeping my current laptop if needed but hoping to use it sparingly.. so would the new ipad be able to satisify my needs?

    I can go for days without using my computer. However, there is a lot that hte iPad just can't do, or can't do well (it was created to be a data consumer, not a data creator, so you have to be prepared to find work arounds or tweaks to do what you want to do)
    If you don't have or keep your laptop, then you're going to be dependant upon cloud services to back your info up. I may sound paranoid, but I really don't like trusting a third party with my data. You may not share my issues but if you don't have a local backup, then you will need something.
    Also, as noted, all apps are skinnied down versions of their original programs. I use Documents to Go, and it does just fine for basic typing, etc, but there isn't any support for in depth formatting or complicated formulas in excel. So you need to decide if the basic functions will do what you need them to do.
    Even with 64 gig, for example, if you take photos, you're not really going to be able to backup your images etc.
    If I were making declarations....a good short term replacement, a good travel companion, but I'd only consider it a permanent replacement for a person that really does nothing beyond e-mail and the occasional e-book reading.

  • Problem displaying panel into frame

    i have a GUI which uses the following frame, the frame
    displays two panels,i set fallPanel's width and height to
    some values but when i run the program i see just a

    public class FallFrame extends JFrame
    private Container contentPane;
    private GridBagLayout layout = new GridBagLayout();
    public FallFrame()
    FallPanel fallPanel = new FallPanel();
    SidePanel sidePanel = new SidePanel();
    contentPane = getContentPane();
    contentPane.setLayout(layout);
    GridBagConstraints constraints = new GridBagConstraints();
    constraints.weightx = 0;
    constraints.weighty = 0;
    add(fallPanel, constraints, 0, 0, 1, 1);
    add(sidePanel, constraints, 1, 0, 1, 1);
    repaint();
    private void add(Component c, GridBagConstraints
    constraints,
    int x, int y, int w, int h)
    constraints.gridx = x;
    constraints.gridy = y;
    constraints.gridwidth = w;
    constraints.gridheight = h;
    contentPane.add(c, constraints);

    If you're only using 2 panels, ditch the use of GridBagLayout. It's not very easy to use, and can be quite tricky if you don't set the parameters the way it expects them. In particular, weightx, and weighty are important parameters, and not setting them or setting them incorrectly can cause your components to collapse when the frame is resized.
    If you just have two panels, use BorderLayout. It's much more simple, and I use it almost all the time. Rarely, is there a need for the complexity of GridBagLayout.
    public class FallFrame extends JFrame {
    public FallFrame() {
    getContentPane().setLayout( new BorderLayout() );
    FallPanel fallPanel = new FallPanel();
    SidePanel sidePanel = new SidePanel();
    getContentPane().add( fallPanel, BorderLayout.WEST );
    getContentPane().add( sidePanel, BorderLayout.CENTER );
    One note of caution. Adding the component into the CENTER of BorderLayout will cause it to get all the resize. If you want fallPanel, and sidePanel to share that you can add sidePanel to the EAST instead of the CENTER, and resize will redistribute more evenly. If you have any trouble with BorderLayout read the APIs.

  • Can't Place a specific Word 2010 docx into InDesign CS4

    I'm trying to use the Place command to bring the text from a specific Word 2010 docx into InDesign CS4.
    I've successfully brought in several Word 2010 documents (docx extention) to InDesign CS4 documents using the place command.
    I have one specific 30 page document (which is no loarger than others which have been successful), and when I use the place command with this file, nothing happens (and no text gets loaded onto the cursor for placement.
    I've tried re-saving the word doc, even pasted its contents into a new Word doc and still can't get the Place command to work.
    THere's nothing particularly unique about the file - doesn't have any odd embedded content, just a 30 page text document writtin in word.
    Any ideas what could be going wrong or how to fix it?
    I've tried restarting both Word and InDesign without any change (and the rest of my word files can be Placed without problem, so I imagine it's something specific to that file.
    NOTE - re-saving in RTF format lets the Place command work but leaves a bunch of empty squares/boxes (not sure if these were for tabs or empty spaces or what really??)
    Can work around this for now, but would like to know how to get the place command working with decent size Word Docs( docx for word 2010 if that matters).
    Thanks for any help.

    It turned out that for at least one particular document the OP had used some blank paragraphs as spacers at the start of the text, and that the style assigned to the second paragraph used a combination of left and right paragraph indents that was more than the width of the document page, sending the entire document (except for the empty first paragraph) into overset. I can't say for sure, but I think the Word styles might have been mapped to ID styles because I found no trace of the indents in the Word file itself, only in the ID document, and I had no trouble placing that Word file in my own ID test document. I did have some trouble placing another .docx file supplied by the OP in CS4, but not in later versions, and conversion to .doc solved that problem.

  • How can I tell if my MacBook Pro has a Retina display?

    I am happy to say, that I am the PROUD OWNER of a 15" MacBook Pro and I don't know if the one that I have has a Retina display built into it.
    I was looking on the forums, to see if I might be able to get away with installing a copy of Windows 7 Pro (32-bit) via USB and I noticed that one of the forums said that you could, if you had a MacBook Pro that has a Retina display built into it.
    I would very my like to know if there's a way to find out or if there's a website that I can check out that would be able to guide me in the right direction.
    PLEASE HELP...IF I CAN DO IT, IT WOULD SAVE ME A LOT OF MONEY FROM HAVING TO BUY A NEW COPY AND I CAN STILL GET THE DRIVERS FROM THE BOOTCAMP TO PULL IT OFF.

    as per bootcamp:

    Yes, your USB will be recognized afterward.

  • I have a sugestion to Apple,Why they not build Imac's also with Retina Display.

    Dear Apple friends,i'm not Steve Jobs but i have a big sugestion to Apple.
    Why they do not build also I'macs with Retina display?.
    Is i't to expensive for Apple to do that?,or is i't at the moment impossible with the Technics in the Apple factory?.
    Mabye in the Future Apple can build Imac's with retina display and the newest chipset's build in.
    Dear greetings from a Dutch Apple user with pleasure.

    Maybe Apple has got that idea. However, note how difficult the design and how expensive an iMac with Retina display could be. Just imagine a 27-inch display with a 5120x2880 resolution ;-).
    Anyway, you can send the idea to Apple > http://www.apple.com/feedback

  • 15" retina display on a 15" non-retina late 2011 MBP?

    Hello,
    I am curious if i can mount a 15 inch retina display on my 15 inch non retina mac book pro, early 2011.
    There are a lot of build differences but except the connectors i believe it could be done.
    In Romania mac books cost a small fortune (7 - 8 months pay) and it would be very hard to replace my laptop just for the screen.
    Please help me out with rational and direct answers.
    Thank you very much for your time!

    Not possible even with a newer non retina MBP.
    Ciao.
    If you desire higher resolution, attach a high resolution monitor.
