I am extremely new to ipads... do not own one, buy considering it... possibly daft... but do they have a dvd drive?

I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay. The movie plays fine on the macbook if I'm not trying to airplay. The airplay works fine if I'm not trying to play a movie from the superdrive. I think my apple TV is Gen 2.

If you get a checkerboard pattern it's because Apple block Airplay Mirroring of protected media.

I thought QT for Mountain Lion could convert the .vob files - is there some setting that I have missed?
Any suggestions that preserves a simple workflow much appreciated.

this does not solve my problem, or at least i do not understand it. Because when i wanna transfer the file onto my ipad..... i do have a lot of backgroud noise due to the conversion and therefore the file is useless.
is there any application whixh i could download? (app store ... and then how do i have to do?)

I'm struggling to. I can control the AppleTV (current gen) from my iPad 2, either using Remote to directly access it or to play the library on my MacBook, but when I go into the iPod app, select the AppleTV, and try and play my iPad's content via the AppleTV, nothing comes out. I did notice that when I tried, I was not ask for the password I has set on the AppleTV. I've since removed it and still no joy.

Does Your Mac have a S-video out ? Some does.
The way to connect isn't easy or straight forward - I use a S-VHS VCR in between
and now one can buy a DVD-player for less than $75-50 I wonder if it's really
worth the hazzle.
Playback from iMovie via FireWire and an Analog/Digital box to TV is one way
but then the DVD has to be converted to streamingDV.
iDVD can't deliver out to FireWire
DVD-player not so either

The answer appears to be "maybe". Once the rental has completely downloaded it shouldn't need an Internet connection from then on, but I've seen reports here from people who tried the play the rental and has it insist on an Internet connection. I've never been able to spot any common factor between such reports to form an opinion as to why this happens, though it's possible that the movie hadn't really completely downloaded. But I'd advise not presuming that an Internet connection won't be necessary.
Someone else here may have better insight into the issue.

I want to use my DVD drive on my mac to play back movies through my apple tv2. I notice that on my iPad, iPhone, iTunes on my computer all have the AirPlay option to display the video on my TV through Apple TV. I do not want to burn my DVD onto my Mac and play through iTunes becasue its a hassle.

Logical but it won't work - DVD player output will be a grey checkerboard pattern.
Apple apps prevent Airplay of DVD content at low level presumably for some copy protection reason.
VLC player is believed to work.

Mini DVDs don't work with the Apple USB SuperDrive or with any disc drive included with Macs. You have to use an external DVD drive compatible with mini DVDs
