Can I play a rented movie on my Apple TV?

I rented a movie on my MacBook Pro. I have an Apple TV and they're connect via my WiFi network. I am having trouble connecting the MacBook with the Apple TV to play back the movie on my HD tv. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There are a few other more ways to do the same thing but thats the easiest let me Know if you need more info .

  • HT1390 I can't play my rented movie on my new mac

I rented a movie from iTunes and before watching it, I received my new Macbook Pro and I used a time machine backup as base for the new mac, but when I checked, it didn't transfer the rented movie, so, I copied it to a flash drive and copied it back to the new mac, when I tried to play it I got the following message "Could not play the rental “Rob the Mob” because it is authorized to play on another computer or device."
Can you guys suggest a fix?

There’s none; that’s part of the digital rights management for iTunes Store rentals.

  • Can't play a rent movie by itunes on AppleTV.

I rent movies from itunes and everthing works on my iphone. I can watch the movie without problem. When I try to stream it from the iphone 4 to my appletv 2 by airplay - the movie appears for 3 seconds in the apple-tv-menue, but then it disapperas suddenly and I can't watch it. I have the newest software update.
I have the same problem also with bought movies - sometimes it works, sometimes not.
    Help.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first.

  • Apple TV: Can I watch a rented movie on my Apple TV?

If I rent a movie from iTunes on my G5, would this movie be available to watch on either of my 2 TV, connected to the G5?

I just searched for 'rental transfer' in the Apple Support pages and got this :-

Can I play my rental on more than one device?
If you download a rented movie on your computer, you can transfer it to your Apple TV, iPod, or iPhone. Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only be viewed on one device at a time. If you rent the movie on your Apple TV, it is not transferable to any other device and you must watch it on your Apple TV.

  • How can i watch a rented movie in my apple tv?

I rented a movie in iTunes and want to watch it in my apple TV.  I try to "drag" the movie to the apple TV under Devices, and can't seem to do it.  When I go to my shared movies in apple TV the rental is not there.  Does anyone know what I need to do?

I assume you are using the Apple TV 1 (silver/grey).
The rental needs to be transferred to the Apple TV. It sounds as though you have paired a secondary (streaming only) library only and you need a primary library to transfer content.

  • I can not download and play HD rented movies through my TV2

    My Problem:
I can not download and play HD rented movies through my TV2
and get the following message   "an error occurred loading this content. Try again later"
Do others have the same problem of not being able to play rented HD?
All my other activities are normal. I can play Standard Def rentals, Movie Previews, HD MLB, and all else as necessary except HD rentals
    I have a 13.5 Mbps connection.
I have gone through ALL of the expected procedures. Changed the cable, did a reset, did a restore.
This has happened with two TV2's as I replaced the first one due to the "unable to update issues"
The current TV2 now has the current up to date software since that issue has been resolved for all.
    Any answers???
    Location Melbourne Australia.

This is a new TV2. Actually my second. First bought less than 2 weeks ago. it was returned to the store and replaced because of the issue of not being able to update the TV2 software from 4.1.1 to 4.2.2.
Both machines had that same problem, and both could not play the rented HD movies.
The second TV2 has sicne been able to update to 4.2.2 when everyone else who had that problem went away this last weekend. So I have gone from 4.1.1 on two machines and no HD rentals to the current one updated to 4.2.2 and still no HD rentals.
The Standard def comes in fine and no real delay. And IF the movie previews are HD (when it is turned on in settings) then I have had NO problems viewing them.
I also have NO problem viewing HD MLB games on the TV2

I cannot play my rented movie because itunes cannot locate where the original file, has anyone face this problem before? Where can I find the location of the downloaded movie?

What did you use to download it with? iPad? iPhone? Computer?
If it's an iPad/iPhone, play it using the videos app.
If on the computer, look on the left side of iTunes in the library under movies.

  • Why can I not play the rented movie...???

Why can I not play the rented movie...???

Welcome to the wonderful world of copy protection.
iPads have a form of digital copy protection that will prevent protected media, such as DRM-infused iTunes movies, from playing back on devices that aren't compliant with the new priority protection measures.
The Intel-developed technology is called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and aims to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across a variety of display connectors, even if not in violation of fair use laws.
The advantage of purchasing your movie as a DVD is that you can watch it on ANY device.
For a better picture, and fewer hassles convert to analog. There are HDMI to Component video adapters available that will solve your problem.

  • I can not watch a rented movie with iTunes

I found the movie in the store (The Emperor (1080p HD)) and rented it thhrough my mini's (a 2.3 Ghz i5 w/ 16Gb Ram running Mac OS 10.8.4) iTunes app (version 11.0.5). I waited for the movie to download completely. I selected the "Rented" tab from my "Movies" Library and clicked on the movie icon (it had a strange appearance which was a generic light grey box with a fim frame in the middle). iTunes responded with: "This movie requires Quicktime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes.). I admit I was dumbfounded for a moment since I associate Quicktime with Apple media more closely than iTunes. I went to the file via Finder, and looked at the extension: m4v and tried to open it with Quicktime. Quicktime responded: "This application cannot be used to play "Emperor (1080p HD).m4v" In order to play this content, please open it with iTunes."
OK, I mumbled, I've seen nonsense like this before and it could be permissions based. My iTunes Library is on an external network drive because of its size. I'll copy the file to the local volume and see what happens. A few minutes later, the copy was complete. I added the file to my Library in iTunes, and this time the movie's icon image was correct. I launched to film. It opened and audio can be heard, but the video is absent. In its place is a field of alternating grey and white squares. I can watch any other video file at 1080p. The mini is connected via HDMI to a Yamaha AV receiver which outputs video to an Epson 5010 projector. Screenshots of the iTunes window appear the same when opened in Preview. I've changed the screen resolution from 1080p to 720 and 1080i and get the same result.
This evening's experiment is over since the rental ends in 24 hours now that I've -listened- to the audio.
Can anyone tell me why I had this experience and (outside of not renting another movie from iTunes) how I might successfully view an movie in the future?
    Thanks

    Hi Mikey1220,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you have not been able to play the rented movie, I'd recommend starting with the troubleshooting steps in this article:
Can't connect to the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1368
Troubleshoot issues on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store:
Make sure your date, time, and time zone are correct in Settings > General> Date & Time.
Note: Time Zone may list another city in your time zone.
Make sure that your iOS software is up to date by tapping Settings >General > Software Update (iOS 5 or later) or connecting your iOS device to iTunes and clicking Check for Update on your device's Summary page.
Check and verify that you're in range of a Wi-Fi router or base station. If you're on a device with cellular service, make sure that cellular data is turned on from Settings > General > Cellular.
Note: If connected to cellular data, larger items may not download. You may need to connect to Wi-Fi to download apps, videos, and podcasts.
Make sure that you have an active Internet connection. You can check theuser guide for your device for help with connecting to the Internet.
Make sure that other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.
Try resetting (turning off and then on again) your Wi-Fi router.
If the issue persists, try troubleshooting your Wi-Fi networks and connections.
Next, try to download the movie again using the steps in this article:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
If your rental expired before you could view the movie, or if the behavior persists, you may want to report an issue with your purchase:

Can I stream a rented movie from computer to tv?

If you have an Apple TV, you can move the rented movie there to watch it. There is no way I know of to do a true stream of a movie rented from the iTunes Store, nor can a movie from there be played on anything other than an Apple device or in Apple's software.
