Can I plug in peripherals (scanner, card reader) to my slave monitor?

can I plug in peripherals (scanner, compact flash card reader) to utilize the firewire ports on the back of my Cinema HD display that I have hooked to the iMac, or do I need to get (another) hub??

Hi, is there a FW and/or USB lead from the monitor to the Computer?

That would depend upon the card reader, who makes it, and what their suppointing software does.  I happen to have an older ZoomIT SD card reader with a 30 pin dock connector.  The hardware maker provides an app for iOS that allows me to use the adapter with my iPhone 4 and I can open pictures from the SD card and view them.  I believe it even allows me to save teh image to my cameral roll if I want.  Since it does have the 30 pin dock connector, I need to use the Apple adapter to plug it into the Lightning port on my iPhone 5, but is still works just fine there too.
I also have the Apple Camera Connection Kit (30 pin version) but it is much more restrictive.  It only works with the iPad, and it only copies certain files form teh SD card to the iPad. (The files must be in the "/DCIM" folder on the SD card, the file name must be in the older DOS 8.3 file name format, and I believe it only woirks with JPG, and MOV files.  As you can see, the Apple device is built to let me view pictures from my point-n-shoot cmera on the iPad screen, whereas the ZoomIT allows copying of content to/from the SD card and an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch.
Now for the bad news, I don' tthink the ZoomIT reader is made any longer, and when you can find them, the sellers are usually charging close to $125 for them.

  • Can anyone recommend a USB CF card reader that will work in my Macbook Pro Retina? My USB card readers for CF cards do not work

At present, the only way I can load photos from a CF card to my new Macbook Pro Retina is by loading them onto an external hard drive via an old PC that can accept either of my USB card readers, then plugging the external hard drive into my MBP. Neither the USB card reader or the cable that comes with the Canon HDSLR camera will transfer photos directly to my MBP. I find it unbelievable that I have to go to a PC to load photos because I can't do it with my new MBP.
Has anyone found a reliable USB CF card reader, or one that connects via thunderbolt or HDMI, at any price, that will work directly with the new MBP Retina?

    This is what we need:
Location photoshoot - we use the Canon EOS 5D  Mk II still camera & the Canon FX100 pro camcorder.
CF cards are: SanDisk Extreme UDMA & SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA 6 for video (I think they are both Type II) My Mac recognises them both as FAT 32 format
My MBPRetina is on the latest version of Mountain Lion OSX 10.83
the files from the camcorder will transfer to my MacBook Pro Retina directly via the camera's cable but it is quite slow & it means I cannot continue to film while downloading files but this we can live with.
the files from the still camera Canon EOS 5D  Mk II will not transfer directly via the camera's cable - have yet to get the Canon software to download, but via the camera's cable will not help anyway as we need to have the still camera free to keep shooting.
We need to be able to take out the CF card from the first part of the shoot & download the still shots while just on the Macbook's battery power, while we insert a fresh CF card back into the still camera to continue with the next part of the shoot simultaneously (while the first card is downloading.)
The files from the first part of the shoot will be both in RAW (.CR2) & Jpeg format. We just need to quickly transfer the jpegs, then I do a quick sort, batch the best ones as black/white images, & use these in a client slideshow immediately after part 2 of the shoot.
Obviously we need fast data transfer speeds, & rely on the MBP's battery power while on a location shoot.
The card readers I have tried are an older specific CF card reader branded as Palm, & a USB 2 multi card reader branded as Travel Flash. With both readers, the lights on the readers flash on & off, & the MBP recognises the card & the files will even appear both in Finder & in i-Photo, so it starts importing, then aborts with an error message saying:
'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
    & another message saying:
'the disk was not ejected properly'.
So it appears the MBP does read the CF cards but the card readers don't stay connected, no matter what angle I put them on or however many times I re-connect them.
Yes, they are probably cheap & I want to buy a decent one.
    So, in summary:
the card reader needs to work when the MBPR is only on battery power (I read in some forums that some USB card readers aren't so reliable on the laptop's battery power)
the card reader needs to be quite fast. I have read the USB 3 readers won't read CF cards at higher than USB 2 speeds. Is this true? Are the firewire connected ones faster, & if so, are they still reliable on the MBP's battery power?
From research, it appears my problem is associated with my specific model of Mac & platform, being MacBook Retina on Mountain Lion OSX Version 10.83. If any of the recommended card readers have been successful with this, plese let me know.
Thanks heaps for the suggestions so far.

  • I can't load pictures from my card reader into my computer--sometmes

I have version 2 of iPhoto. In the past, everytime I put a card in my reader, the pictures would appear on my screen. This time, nothing happens. I have over 200 pictures in my photo library, but when I put in a different card, which contains a different set of photos, those photos don't appear on my screen. I click on IMPORT; in fact, I click on both IMPORTS, since I don't know what function either serves. Incidentally, I know that the card contains photos, because they can be viewed when the card is in the camera. I have checked the cable connections. One more thing: I added a photo to another card and sent it as an e-mail attachment. Could something be wrong with the card that's giving me trouble?

    Niku,
Do you see the icon of the card on the desktop?
    No.
you could also go into the applications and look for
    image capture.
I went there. In the USB storagage window it said, "Items remaining 11." It also said "Preparing download," but it never progressed beyond where it started. I cancelled the attempt.
Launch it and then connect your card reader. This
    might work.
If you should want image capture to launch in the
future when you connect a card, then go to Image
capture> preferences: you will see camera and scanner
preferences. Adjust to your liking. If you do not
want iPhoto to launch anymore when your camera or car
is connected, then set to "nothing"
    Where is image capture located?
Personnaly I disabled image capture: I set it to
nothing. I like better opening the icon of the card,
penetrate to the picture level, and then drag & drop
all the needed picture into an empty folder on the
desktop, say called" August 2006". Then disconnect
the card, launch iPhoto, then drag the august 2006
folder over iPhoto window. You will then have a new
film roll called August 2006. Shoot 2 birds with
    one stone.
What if there is no card icon?
Then you can delete the folder "august 2006" or you
can place it into another HD as a personal backup
    system.
p.s. make sure that you remove your card before
launching iPhoto, because iP will be searching your
card again, to re-import what you just uploaded
manually into the august 2006 folder!
Although you have given detailed instructions, I want to take a different approach. I'm going to delete all photos now in my computer and begin again. I'm going to make a fresh posting, because too many questions in one posting can be confusing. For now, however, I need instructions for removing my card from the reader. I'm told it is wrong to do this without following the proper procedure. Supposedly the proper procedure is as follows: "Click the tiny Eject button next to the card's name in the Source list and then remove the card from the reader". The problem with this advice is that there is no "tiny Eject button," and there is no card name. Would it be okay to just remove the card from the reader?
    hope this helps.
    michel
Yes, it's helpful, but I think I need to start from the beginning. That's why I'm going to try to delete all the photos from my computer and then try to import photos from at least four memory cards to see if they all act the same way. That reminds me: there are THREE Import buttons (two in the iPhoto window, and one in the FILE menu), and I'm not sure which one I'm supposed to use. One problem I'm having is that I haven't been able to delete everything, but I'll save my questions on that for my next posting. Thanks for your help.

  • Can't Open RAW Images - disconnected card reader - damaged??

The other day, I think I made the mistake of unplugging a Compact Flash card reader of RAW images prematurely. I'm not sure.
I got the warning that says that unplugging can damage the files.
Now, when I try to view the images, it shows that there are RAW images there, but they are greyed in Photoshop. In the browser, they are not greyed out, but they don't open except in Preview and there they just open Preview without showing an actual image.
When I hit Command - I, on an image it shows as Zero Kb.
    My question...is there any hope?
Is there anything I can do to salvage these images somehow?
There is a second card which DOES show the image and opens in Preview, BUT when I try to open in Photoshop, the NEF RAW file is s greyed and won't open.
I would REALLY like to save this images if possible. Any hope would be much appreciated.
    Thanks a lot.
    J.

Presumably you have checked to see if the images can be viewed if you put the card back in the Nikon - and tried a USB connection from the camera.
You could try changing the 'Image Capture' (in Applications) Preferences and see if the files are recognised.
There is also 'Graphic Converter' (in Applications) which might be able to get useable files from the camera or the reader - although this old bundled version(4.9) doesn't mention your file format.
If no joy, Lexar have a utility that might help
    http://www.lexar.com/software/image_rescue.html
No consolation I know, but I get that that really comforting "unplugging" message sometimes, even when the reader and CF card with Canon RAW files has been properly dismounted...

  • How can I test the onboard sd card reader as it does not recognise a card when I put on in the reader?

    Hi
Is it possible to run a test to check that the on board sd card reader is recognised, as I can't get a card to mount onto the desktop when I put a card into the reader.
    Thanks

    Hi Allan
I have tried ten different makes of card and they are all the same. Even tried a brand new one straight out of the packet. That did not work. All the cards work with my wifes old windows laptop.

  • Can I use 8250 lcd with card reader ...

I have broken Photosmart 8250 and I want to use lcd display for viewing pictures from printer`s card reader. What can I do (hammering, shortcuting ...) ?

If your SD card reader is from Apple, you shouldn't have any problems. If your card reader is from a 3rd party source, it's possible to have a problem. Do the update.

  • How can I stop iTunes scanning the card reader on my computer?

OK - its not really my computer thats the issue - its my Granddads.
Basically, his computer has an internal card reader. When you try to launch iTunes, it fails to open for 30+ mins.
The cause appears to be the same issue that causes problems if a blank CD or DVD is in the drive - however, it is the card reader that is preventing iTunes from opening correctly. iTunes tries to scan the empty devices - which eventually causes Windows to mark the devices as having a problem and prevents them from working until after a reboot.
I have confirmed that this is the cause by unplugging the reader internally - however this is not a solution as he needs the USB ports and the card reader slots for his daily use.
I need to prevent iTunes from scanning these devices.
Anyone got any ideas? This is urgent.
System is Win 7 x64 Ultimate.

    Anybody?

  • HT4623 Can I use lightning SD camera card reader after upgrading my iPad 4 to iOS. 7?

    Hi! All,
I am using lightning SD camera reader with my iPad 4 running with iOS 6 without any problem. But I would like to upgrade to iOS 7. I saw some reviews
after upgrading the card reader is not working. I contacted apple support community people for the above issue recently through chat. They said the device should work even after upgrading. I have not yet upgraded. But iOS 7 is tempting with its amazing look. What do I do? If I upgrade and my SD card reader wont work then I will be in great disapppointment. Please help if any body has answer for my problem..

  • How can I test the digital media card reader?

New notebook DV6-6B58SA digital media slot is not responding to plug in memory DUO SD card.
The SD has successfully downloaded via the USB.
The PMB has been successfully updated to ver.5.8.02,
Are there any diagnostics to test the SD reader slot.?
I remember that Realteck (?) softwaredriver upgrades failed until tech. support recommended uninstall and reinstall.

  • HT204384 why does my 16gb SDHC card reads as full, but I can't see the files

I have a SanDisk 30mb/s 16GB SDHC card used with a GoPro HD Hero. When I plug it into my card reader, it DOES show up on my desktop. When I double-click on it, I see the folders, but no files. I know the card is full, and it shows up as full when I press "command i".
How can I get these files?!?

I just wasn't sure I should put down the actual IP address.
You made the right choice, and is what I guessed was the case. But I've learned to confirm my assumptions; I've been surprised before.
Anyway, hope you get somewhere with your IT folks. If you approach them from the standpoint that you can't ping the server and avoid, at least initially, the "can't mount the server volume" issue, you may have better luck with them. If you can get them to help you to the point where you get a ping through successfully, you may find the other problems go away.
One note: it is possible that they've blocked the ability to ping their network devices, so the failure of the ping isn't completely diagnostic. But it's certainly a symptom to bring up with them; if they are blocking ping, they should tell you that.
    Good luck.

  • System hanging up on startup when Image Card reader plugged into front

My motherboard is a MSI 845PE Max2. When I plug in an image card reader into one of my front usb ports after the machine has been turned on the images are read fine no problem. Should I shut the machine down and restart it the machine hangs on the white screen displaying the MSI logo and the notice to hit the tab and other key to skip the messages. I have tried to hit any and every combination of keys but nothing happens. Even when I try to press the restart button on my machine nothing happens. I literally have to use the power switch in back of the case to get the machine to start up again and have to remove the Image card reader from the front usb port. Can anyone offer some advice on how I can fix this?

It is then obviously a compatibility issue with that particular card reader and that particular board model. As your board is long time EOL ("End-of-life") and has been replaced by two generations already there will be no further updates. What bios versions did you try already?

  • Motherboard hangs on POST when USB card reader is plugged in

Hi there, I am using the MSI Z77A-GD65 GAMING motherboard. I am using the following USB card reader which I bought from a local store: Amazon.com: Epraizer Universal Flash & SIM Card Reader/Writer, USB 2.0: Computers & Accessories
However, whenever I boot with this device, my BIOS is stuck at error code 'C6'. A check on AMI's website shows that this related is probably related to boot devices. I am able to boot fine with other USB devices plugged in, such as USB thumbdrive and USB hard disk.
At first, I thought it was a problem with my device but I can boot fine with the memory card reader plugged in on all my other computers. This makes me wonder if there is a firmware fault? I have tried disabling legacy USB and removing USB devices from boot order, but nothing helps. I have seen that in the forums some BIOS updates for some motherboards fix this issue, for example: **Official MSI Z77 Mpower Discussion Thread** - Overclockers UK Forums , where in one of the BIOS update the changes reads: Fix the issue that the system will hang 0xB4 or 0x99 when use customer usb cable or usb cardreaders.(USB cardreader: KAMA reader Tr, Akasa card reader).
So I was wondering if it's a common issue with MSI motherboards? Will there be a fix or my motherboard is now too old to be supported? I purchased this motherboard two months ago btw
P.S it works fine when I plug it in in Windows. I have tried both the ports in front and at the back, USB 2 or 3.

It is then obviously a compatibility issue with that particular card reader and that particular board model. As your board is long time EOL ("End-of-life") and has been replaced by two generations already there will be no further updates. What bios versions did you try already?

  • Where can I get an internal card reader/usb 3.0/firewire/SATS, etc for my Mac

Where can I get an internal memory card reader?
Is there one that also combines to give usb 3.0, firewire, SATS, etc.?

combo cards are terrible but if you look you will see that Highpoint has a USB3 card, yes; or SATA3 (which is probably better).
FW is slower than any drive in existence now.
multi interface chip cards have never performed well but needed back in their day, like OldWorld PowerMacs and those lacking FW800 and USB2.
