Can I plug my I pad directly into the Time Capsule to back it up?

I Need to back up my I pad which is now full.  It has over 2500 photos that I need to store else where and have a new time capsule.
I am not very tech savvy!!!!!

iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad back up to iTunes on a computer....or....to iCloud.
If you have a Mac that is setup to backup to the Time Capsule using Time Machine, then the iPad backups stored on the Mac are backed up to the Time Capsule when the Mac backs up. In this case, you could say that the iPad backups up indirectly to the Time Capsule.
Please see this Apple support document for more information on iOS back up options:

Yes, but it's probably better to keep it connected directly to the computer.

  • Can I stream things directly from the time capsule to my AppleTv without using my computer?

I have an older MacBook and I'm worried about the storage so I want to get things moved to a Time Capsule.  I was just wondering if I can stream things directly from the Time Capsule to the AppleTV without having to store them in iTunes on my computer and play them off of there.

You cannot stream from a TC .. it is not a media device.. you can store movie files on the TC but you still need to run the computer to play them.
Depending on how you connect this can cause dramatic slowdowns.
A WD Live TV can play raw movie files from a TC.. because it is not a media streamer which is all the ATV is, it is a full media player.

  • Can I add a NAS via ethernet to the Time Capsule network?

"I'm a PC," but am sick of spending all my time with Windows/Network conflicts and am getting ready to take the plunge into the Mac world (insert applause here).
My router/switch is old, and I want "n" wireless capability, so my plan here is to go whole hog and buy a Macbook Pro, an iMac, and a brand new network infrastructure including the 2TB Time Capsule. This way I will stay completely within the Apple family.
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS 2TB that I would like to have available as a second back-up drive on the network. It can only be on the network via ethernet (LAN). It cannot be plugged into the Time Capsule's USB port.
Will I be able to add this drive and get Time Capsule (and even Time Machine) to "play nice" with it? Can I even set the Time Machine on each computer to back up to this drive?
Or should I just sell the ReadyNAS and get a USB drive that will work with the time capsule?
Finally, there are only 3 ethernet ports on the TC. Can I add a switch?
Thanks for any help anyone can offer,
    Shawn

It's reasonable to expect your NAS drive to work when connected to your Time Capsule network. However, it will be difficult for you to use it for Time Machine backups. Apple only supports Time Machine network backups to the disk in a Time Capsule.
It's easy to have multiple computers backing up via Time Machine to the same Time Capsule.
Or should I just sell the ReadyNAS and get a USB drive that will work with the time capsule?
That's up to you. Keep in mind that Apple still doesn't want you to use that USB drive for Time Machine backups.

    Yes.

Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • I have 2 different MacBooks (owned by 2 people) connected to my Time Capsule. I want to use the Time Capsule to back up both MacBooks separately from each other. Can one person access the hard drive of the other person, on the same Time Capsule?

I have 2 different MacBooks (owned by 2 people) connected to the same Time Capsule over a wifi network. I want to use the Time Capsule to back up both MacBooks separately from each other. Can one person access the hard drive of the other person, on the same Time Capsule? Is there a way to ensure that the files on the 2 laptops are kept private from each other? Thanks!

If someone really wants to do something, it won't take them long to find out how to do it.

Security on a Time Capsule is a bit like installing a lock on a tent. It will keep the honest folks out, but probably not the others.

  • Do I have to plug my ipad mini directly into the mains for a reliable charge?

I've been having an issue with my new ipad mini not charging even when its plugged in using the mains adapter unless I plug it directly into the wall. This is a bit inconvienient as I don't have enough sockets and I like to use my ipad as a clock radio with TuneIn so when I wake up my battery is about 40% even though its been plugged in overnight.

    This is unclear and confusing...

    iPad Charging
"The fastest way to charge your iPad is with the included USB Power Adapter.
iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter.
When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it's in sleep mode.
Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain."

  • How to proceed on transferring the content of an external hard drive into the time capsule.

I just bought a new MBP and a 2T time capsule but i don’t know how to proceed on transferring the content of an old external hard drive into the brand new time capsule.
The old external hard drive is a carbon copy of another external HD which was my time machine backup but unfortunately someone stole it from me…  so I was thinking about transferring the content from the old external hard drive to the time capsule and then set time capsule as the new time machine backup.
Is there anybody whose can give me a hand and tell what is the best to do?
    Thanks
    sb

Configure Time Machine preferences. Be sure to remove the external drive from the Exclude list.

  • Can I add a USB hard drive to the time capsule

I am wanting to know if one could add an external HD to the USB port on the time capsule?

You might be able to. If you want to transfer the contents of one to the other, you will have to do that via your computer. But, if you wanted to increase memory space, then maybe. Try looking it up in the Time Capsule Manual.
P.S. It does say you can connect USB drives to it.

  • Can i just use the time capsule as back up storage

Can I use the Time Capsule as just back up storage?  I am a little bit confused on why I should set up another wireless network and was wondering if this would interfere with my current wireless network?  I am not very computer savvy.

    You can.. but should you??
Not everything you can do you should do!!
I just posted the same thing here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5051446?tstart=0
Do not setup another wireless network.. whatever you do. If you buy a TC for storage.. or already have one.. then it should still be part of the existing network.
Describe your network and we can tell you how to fit the TC in.
Certainly the TC can be used as a second wireless Acess Point (AP).. this is totally different to second wireless network. And you maybe confusing the terms. A network for wireless can have multiple access points but a single network. And for large file transfer over wireless keeping the TC as AP is a good idea.

  • How to backup the files that are into the Time Capsule HD? is it possible?

Hi my question is not so simple...I think
I'm using a TC only as a router and a network HD
and I saved on it all my movies, tv shows and also my itunes library and iphoto library to share all this stuff also to my mac mini which is connected to my Plasma tv.
I wanna know if is it possible to backup with time machine the TC hard disk
because I don't know how to tell to time machine to backup not my macs but my TC.
I read this article that explain How to enable Time Machine on unsupported volumes
    http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/10/how-to-enable-time-machine-on-unsupported-vol umes/
You think that if I activate this option Time Machine can read from TC and make a backup of it?

No, sorry, Time Machine cannot back up a network drive.
You can copy ("archive") everything on the TC's internal HD to a USB drive connected to it, per the green box in #Q6 Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. That's probably the simplest and easiest way, but it's also likely the slowest.
Or, see Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product. I've also heard that Chronosync may work for this purpose.

  • Can i use new TC to connect wirelessly to home network and plug my tv into the time capsule for internet connectivity?

My new tv needs to plug into an ethernet port for internet connectivity.
I'm hoping it can plug into my TC however my TC is wirelessly connected to my current home network... how can i get this to work?
TC version A1470 (i think, brand new)
    Many thanks.
    Ben

If the TC is connected to a wireless network provided by another Apple router, then the TC extends the network by default, and the Ethernet ports are enabled on the TC.
If the TC is connected to a third party network wirelessly, then it must have been setup to "join" the wireless network. When the TC is set up this way, the TC becomes a wireless hard drive and nothing more. The Ethernet ports are not enabled when the TC "joins" a wireless network.
So, a logical first troubleshooting step would be to confirm "how" the TC is currently set up. To do that.....assuming that you are using a current or recent version of AirPort Utility on your Mac.......
    Open AirPort Utility
Click on the TC icon, then click Edit in the smaller window
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the window
Check the setting for Network Mode and report on that

  • Can I move my mmorpg game over to the time capsule and play it from there?

I have a MacBook Pro with a 256 SSD. I play World of Warcraft and it is taking up a lot of room on my macbook. I was wondering if I would be able to move the  game folder over to the airport time capsule and play it from there. Or would if not work cause the time capsule isn't fast enough? The apple guys on my base don't know enough to answer my question and there is no apple store here on the island I am stationed on.

If you do not have enough space on the SSD, do not move the gamefolder to the TimeCapsule: this is much to slow; instead move something else there or use an external HDD or SSD.

  • Connecting a WD my book directly to a time capsule

I have a time capsule 1TB that is full as it has backups of 2 computers already. I want to backup a third computer (new macbook air).
I bought a WD mybook 2TB drive. I was advised that I can plug it directly into the time capsule via USB and then backup wirelessly through the time capsule.
I realise there is probably some formatting and setup I have to do, can anyone help with this??
    Thanks!

Time Machine requires a drive that is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+, so that would be item one on your "to do" list before you connect the drive to the Time Capsule. You have to connect the drive directly to your Mac for the format operation.
    http://www.hgst.com/support/faqs/how-format-my-drive-mac-only-hfs
Item two, once the drive is formatted correctly and connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule, you need to verify that the Time Capsule recognizes the drive by using AirPort Utility.  Open up AirPort Utility, click on the Time Capsule icon, and click Edit in the smaller window that appears, then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window.
Here you will see the Time Capsule drive....named "Data" unless you have changed the name of the drive, and your WD drive. If the WD drive name appears here, you are ready for the next step.
Item three would be to open up Time Machine Preferences on the Mac that you want to use to backup to the WD drive, and click Select Disk to display a list of drives that will accept Time Machine backups. Click the WD Drive to select it, then click Use Disk and the Mac will start to back up in a few minutes.

  • Can I connect two usb hard drives to my time capsule?

    Dear all,
I have bought a powered usb hub to connect two usa hard drives to my 3rd generation time capsule, as it is written in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2421
I have formatted both hard drives, so now the file system is extended Mac OS (journaled). If I plug the usb hub to my laptop, I can access both hard drives. If I plug it to my time capsule, by no means I can access any disk. If I plug each hard drive directly to the time capsule, I can access each of them. I don't understand! what can be the problem? The file system is ok, the hub is powered and everything is working if I plug it to my laptop. Can anybody help me? Any idea? Thank you in advance!

A hub that works on a Mac does not necessarily work on a Time Capsule.. eg Some Belkin hubs do not work on TC even though they work on the Mac.. The TC having a small amount of ROM memory can only store drivers for a small selection of usb chipsets.. you need to buy a different powered hub..
What ones actually work with TC.. ?? Not sure.. google for success.
best usb hub airport (airport and TC are same thing)
This is coming up all the time.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3787224?start=0&tstart=0
Your problem is finding the right one, because even like belkin ones, a 7port might work, because belkin are rebadgers they don't make anything.. so it depends which factory they come from.. for a consumer product like a hub they probably care more about the outside and packaging appearance than the chip used inside. And lets face it.. all they care about in the end is to deliver it for the cheapest price possible to make money out of it.
