Can I preload songs on an ipod as a gift?

I want to purchase an ipod as a gift for someone and was wondering if I could preload songs (without physically removing the ipod from its package and connecting it to my comp) because I'm sending it. Does Apple have any provsions like this?

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your iPod for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.

You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes. The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod, the transfer of purchased content has recently been introduced with iTunes 7. If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not have caught up with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.

Are you getting any error messages? How is your iPod set to update? If you are trying to drag songs to it make sure it's in manual update mode and not set automatically update.

You can't delete them directly from the iPod. You need to do it through iTunes. How you delete music depends on how you have it set up to sync with your iTunes library, whether that be automatically or manually. All this is covered in your iPod's User Guide.

Are you trying to delete them directly from the iPod via the iPod itself? If so, this is not possible.
If you are trying to delete them from your iPod via iTunes, you must have your iPod Touch set up for manual management, meaning the Manually manage music and videos option must be ticked from under its Summary tab in iTunes.

Im trying to play my the songs on my iPod with itunes that I just installed on my friends laptop. The problem is, the place where it says Charles's (me) Laptop, the songs are all grayed out and I cant select any of them.

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and Playlists" in the iPod preferences.
