I know I can use Airprint and other solutions; that wasn't the point. That will no doubt work from home but what use is that to me in other location? I'm looking to print online purchase receipts, customer receipts, photos, emails etc. Chances are I'll be doing all that from my PC anyway and will stick to that. To gloworm: regarding working with only one app open at a time, that should be taken care of when OS4 is available for the iPad - supposedly in the fall. As for using Air Sharing to print, you have to 1st get your files into the app via wifi from your computer. I have Air Sharing for both my phone and iPad and really like it. Once your files are in the app you just bring them up and touch the bottom left corner of iPad to bring up print. You can then print to any shared printer. In that case, it should be possible. I haven't tried this directly, but I believe it should work.
You'll need to get an actual AirPrint compatible Printer.

Once you have the compatible printer, using the Hotspot feature from the iPhone he'll have to create the Wifi bubble form the iPhone, and connect the Printer to that Wifi network.
Then connect the iPad to that same Wifi network provided by the iPhone. When all that is done, the printer should appear in any of the Apps that can Print under the Action Arrow button.
For instance in email, pressing the action arrow should show a Print option. In there the printer should appear.
Alternatively you can simply buy a wireless router and setup the network through there even if there is no internet attached. Connect the wireless printer to the router network, and connect the iPad or iPhone to that same wifi network to print.
