I purchased an apple store gift card instead of an iTunes gift card. Is there a way for me to purchase an iTunes gift card with the an Apple Store gift card?

From what I see and from my experiment in the U.S, online Apple Store, I would say that yes you can. iTunes gift cards are sold in the Apple Online store and Apple Store gift cards are an accepted form of payment on the store, so that means to me that it is possible.

You can't from Apple, they don't let you buy iTunes gift cards with an Apple Store gift card. You could see if a different store in your country might let you (though they possibly won't), or try selling the card to somebody e.g. family, friend, eBay etc

If you do not want to download multiple times, just copy the Applications -> Install Lion app to a safe place BEFORE you do the first install. Then copy that copy to any Mac you own where you want to install Lion.

I bought an iTunes £50 voucher online as a present for my sister, thinking she could redeem the value towards buying an iPad.
I opted for the code to be emailed on the day of her birthday, which is today.
However, I've just learned that I should have bought an Apple Store gift card... How confusing.
Will Apple likely be able to transfer the balance across? And if so, how do I do it?

Apple stores, including online, won't let you buy iTunes gift cards with an Apple Store gift card - it can only be used to buy hardware/software from the store. Other stores might let you do so, or you could try selling the card

So, many months ago, prior to the announcement that Lion would be downloaded and installed through the Mac App Store, I purchased an Apple Gift Card (not iTunes) to ensure the money was "set aside". I did this with the anticipation that Lion, like all other OS's before it, would be installed via a disc and not downloaded. Although I love the option of downloading the latest OS, I am in a bind because I now have a, virtually, worthless Apple Gift Card that cannot be redeemed for Lion at all...which is extremely frustrating. Is there a way to make this purchase or am I just screwed?

You can't buy apps or an itunes gift card with an apple store gift card. They are two different things.
"Apple Store Gift Cards may not be redeemed at the iTunes Store, through any Apple resellers, or at any Apple Online Store, Apple Specialist, or Apple Retail Store outside the United States."
However, this was not told to my aunt when she purchased the card for me. She thought, and I agree, that you should be able to purchase apple software with an apple store gift card. You can't.

Thanks ed2345, but I actually was trying to buy an ipad Air 2 along with the iTunes gift cards. There doesn't seem to be an option to redeem gift cards on the payment screen...?

Apple Store gift cards can only be used in Apple stores and their online stores, they can't be used with the iTunes store - and they can't be used to buy iTunes gift cards from Apple.
