Can I purposely induce a mac coma?
I don't know what magic I have to do, but sometimes my computer will go to sleep, but instead of waking up when I lift the screen, it won't wake up. Typing keys won't wake it up either. It will have gone into some kind of coma, and the only way to wake it is to push the power button, where it'll restore itself (you'll see a time-bar (or something) appear at the bottom of the screen, filling up as the computer wakes up.
Is there a way to induce this? (Meaning, can I do it on purpose?)
My energy savings are: Power Adapter: Sleep: put computer to sleep at 30 min, put display to sleep at 20 min, and put disks to sleep when possible.
Is it the last option that is causing this coma?
The reason I ask is because I don't have a battery at the moment (will get one later today) but I need to move my laptop around from one area to another, usually on a constant basis. I'll usually shut down.
The other day, the computer appeared to be in a coma and I unplugged it, moved it, plugged it in, and when I powered up, it was such a superfast boot-up (because it was waking from a coma) that I saw the potential good in this!
I assume the heads aren't parked so I am very careful moving the computer.
Anyway, this is really for those battery-less days, which happens when my battery explodes like they all seem to do.
No, that's not checked. (So after a power failure, the computer would just remain off.)
It happened again today. I can't figure out if the hard disk is "going to sleep" and only after a lengthy period of time or what. I should pay more attention to how long I'm away from the computer.

My mac. com email can no longer be collected.
Since I upgraded to Mavericks, I have lost the ability to collect email from my secondary mac.com account. I can still read by signing into iCloud, but not in Mail. The settings were automatically entered for me and are greyed out, so I can't change them. Any ideas on how to solve this problem? They would be appreciated.
Troubleshooting is a process of elimination.
Eliminate Mail
A few users have issues like this where Mail simply fails. You can eliminate Mail as the source of the problem by testing in Postbox and MailMate. Both have demos. If your account fails to connect in another source, then the problem is with account or an issue on your Mac.

Eliminate your User's folder
CREATE A NEW USER
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups (Accounts. in SL) Switch to the New User by logging out under the Apple in the Menu Bar.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, then the problem is with your base files.
If no, then the problem is in your User's folder. -

Please if anyone can help apple doesn't seem to care?If you need to reinstall Mac OS X 10.8.x (there is no 10.8.6 yet, by the way), restart your Mac, hold down the Option key so you see all the bootable partitons, and boot to the Recovery Partition. From there you can reinstall Mountain Lion. You will need a good Internet connection.

On my Mac desktop I must have changed a setting so that now when I move the mouse the open windows fly off to the sides and I can't see them. They come back when I move the mouse, but it is so annoying. How can I make the windows not disappear like that?
Click on the Hot Corners.. button and look at the four definitions. In the picture below, if you moved the cursor to the right top of the screen, it would slide all the applications off the screen as you describe and show the desktop. Set it to "-" to deactivate.

Can anyone recommend a good Mac Calendar, Contact program for the iPhone. The one intalled is hopelessly inadequate and inefficient. 2 Main problems- The current iCal + Contacts programs do not link to each other. And there is no To Do List!
Palm and MS Outlook had those features 6 years ago! Whats up with Apple?!!ical does have a to do list in it. either click the little pin under the calendar, or click show to do list in the view menu.
i don't know much purpose behind needing to link ical and address book (not that i'm saying it isn't important at all - you obviously have some type of need for it). but it's got to be possible somehow, because you can set ical to make a calendar of birthdays from your address book contacts (in the main preference pane for the application).
plus, i doubt there'd be another mac calendar application you'd be able to sync with your iphone, unless whoever developed it developed an iphone app to sync it with. probably wouldn't sync with your contacts/calendar apps that come with the iphone. -
Can't send email from Mac MAIL
I am setting up my new MacBook -- specifically the Mac MAIL, and intend to include a yahoo account and my new mac.com account.
So far, through Mac MAIL, I am able to send and receive email with my mac.com account, but can only receive email on my yahoo account. When I try to send an email from the yahoo account through Mac Mail, I get an error message about the outgoing server. (btw, no trouble if I go through the Safari browser to yahoo, which is why yahoo phone assistant gave up trying).
BUT.....the outgoing server settings are correct, as per my review and the yahoo phone assistant. Still, no luck.
Anyone had this problem? Thanks for any advice.

Am I reading it correctly that you’re suggesting the OP to set up his/her Yahoo account again?
You should never, ever, set up two accounts in Mail with the same Account Type, User Name and Incoming Mail Server. For each account, Mail creates a folder within ~/Library/Mail/ whose name starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the username and the incoming mail server. Having two accounts sharing the same account folder in Mail is calling for trouble. Amongst other problems, deleting one of the accounts would cause the (shared) account folder to be deleted as well, and all the mail stored there to be lost... -
Can't send email from .mac account on iPhone
I can no longer send from my .mac account. I get the error message on the phone "The connection to the outgoing server "smtp.mac.com" failed"".
This occurs both on edge and on WiFi. I have looked through other suggested fixes and have tried deleting the account on the phone and setting it up directly on the phone. I've also tried toggling the "sync mail account" setting in iTunes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!Assuming you are using the Mail.app on your Mac, what are you using as the server port for .Mac's SMTP server?
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your .Mac account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below for .Mac's SMTP server.
If 25, enter 587 in place of 25 in the Server Port field and when finished, select OK to save the changed setting and if you are transferring your .Mac account settings from your Mac to the iPhone via the iTunes sync preferences for your iPhone, re-sync to transfer this change to the iPhone.
If the account was manually entered on the iPhone and you aren't syncing the account settings from your Mac, in the SMTP server field for your .Mac account preferences on the iPhone, add 587 to the server separated by a colon.
smtp.mac.com:587
This should take care of it.
My .Mac account is my primary account and I haven't had any problems sending messages with my .Mac account on any WiFi network or EDGE with this setting. -

I own a mac mini Quad Server 2.0 i7 and I use it for audio production. It's great but I need to travel with it. I was hoping some form of screen sharing could be useful using the macbook air to control the mac mini. Therefore, I'd be using the stronger processor of the mac mini but would still be using the keyboard and trackpad from the air.
My two problems:
1. I can't depend on wifi to make this happen. Wifi is not always available when travleing. What would be the best way to configure a LAN connection?
2. The less lag the better for screen sharing. Which apps are fastest?

I have connected my new Macbook Air to my existing Samsung large external monitor with a VGA adaptor but I can't get the full mac desktop to display. No icons but then websites are coming up. Help! Further info: I am a complete newbie to Mac. Had three macs prior to 2000 then four PCs. Just come back and struggling a bit with the unfamiliarity. On my old PC laptop I could simply switch from the laptop screen to the large external monitor (and back) with the F4 function key. While I can get the background image from my MBA to display, that's it. Until I noticed on the far left of the external monitor, the very edge of one of the web pages I was on. So Idragged it over to display in the centre. But that's all that's there. And now I have gone out of those web pages but they are still displaying on the monitor. There is some wierd disconnect. I'm sure it is just a setting thing. Will keep searching for answer but any advice welcome!
Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,

How can I sync "On My Mac" iCal calendars on Snow Leopard with iPhone and Google Calendar?

(I've done a lot of searching for a clear answer but without success.)
Can someone please advise how I can get the "On My Mac" calendars on iCal v4.0.4 (running under Snow Leopard 10.6.8) to sync with an iPhone and Google Calendars, 'over the air' (i.e. not via iTunes) and both ways (two-way syncing).
There was a great bit of software called Spanning Sync which did it all but it's now discontinued. I'm running Snow Leopard and do NOT want to upgrade to OS Lion.
I've tried the iCloud route but it just creates an extra set of "@me.com" calendars under the "On My Mac" calendars - it is not syncing the "On My Mac" calendars themselves (and I want to use the "On My MAc" calendars as the master dataset (the 'Truth database' to use an Apple term!).
... And the same happens when I try to sync my Google Calendars: another set of "@google.com" calendars appear.
Now instead of 2 calendars in iCal I have 6: 2 On My Mac calendars, 2 iCloud ones, and 2 Google ones. (This is not progress Apple!)
Hope someone can advise.

I can no longer us my mac to open up recent numbers documents from my macbook. I am unable to upgrade to allow me to get the current numbers version on my mac. On each machine turn on iCloud and sync all the available apps. Apple explains how to set up iCloud in http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
After doing this run software update on each machine and install all the suggested updates. If you still need help installing the most up-to-date versions of iLife and iWorks open the Mac App Store - click the Purchased tab and update all that need to be updated.
