Can I put a MacBook processor and hard drive in a PowerMacG5?

I have a late 2008 MacBook that is showing its age and wear. The battery is worn out and the keys and mouse sometimes stick. I also have a PowerMac G5 which has an older operating system, but great working keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Can I put the processor and hard drive of the MacBook into the PowerMac and have a desktop version of the MacBook.

I have an older black MacBook 2007 era and use a Henge Dock when I want to connect it to my TV with a wireless keyboard/trackpad.
you would have to check to see if this is compatible with your particular model:
http://hengedocks.com/pages/vertical-macbook
an alternative is a stand, which would allow you to use the laptop display, in addition to another external display, on your desktop:
http://store.griffintechnology.com/elevator
PS- I have replaced the battery in my MacBook twice now, if it starts to swell up it can interfere with the trackpad button, causing it to register the button as being held all the time, which interferes with an external mouse as well.  you can find replacement batteries here, an Apple store may not have them in stock.
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Apple/Laptop/Batteries
to hook up the monitor, you will need one of the appropriate adapters, not sure what knid your MacBook uses, my older one has the miniDVI, they make adapters to go to standard VGA or DVI monitors, there were a few different video ports on the MacBooks, you can lookup the specs of yours at www.everymac.com if you are not sure what the plug type is.

  • I have about 130 gigs of movies on my iTunes and was wondering if I can just put them on my backup hard drive and remove them from my main computer to free up the space

I have about 130 gigs of movies on my iTunes and was wondering if I can just put them on my backup hard drive and remove them from my main computer to free up the space.

I haven't done this with an external drive, but I would imagine it works the same way as if you have multiple internal drives.  Also hopefully it works with less headache in OSX than in windows.
Anyway, move all your music over to your external, and then go into itunes -> preferences -> advanced -> iTunes media folder location.  Navigate to your drive, and pick the folder you want.  Ensure that your folders are set up like they are in your ~/Music/iTunes folder, or wherever your iTunes is currently pointing.  Then quit and restart itunes.  If your music doesn't show up, try dragging your music folder from your external onto itunes, and it will hopefully update your library.xml.
As far as Jerry's problem goes, you could try adding another music folder to your library.xml, but I really have no idea whether this will work or not.  If you want to give it a try (can't promise you won't corrupt your library.xml, so make a copy beforehand) you can find the music folder xml element right near the top of the xml file (open it with textedit/textmate/whatever text editor you want (NOT WORD)).  Curious to know if this works, and if it doesn't I have other ideas so let me know.

  • Hey, can i clone my Macbook Pro internal hard drive and then paste it all onto a formated external hard drive, then make the Mac use the external as the primary hard drive?

hey, can i clone my Macbook Pro internal hard drive and then paste it all onto a formated external hard drive, then make the Mac use the external as the primary hard drive? please help for i only have around 618mb left out of 189GB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    If what doesn't work?
If cloning your internal drive to the external drive is not successful, I expect CCC will tell you so. Assuming that doesn't happen, you will have a bootable replica of the internal drive on the external drive once CCC has finished.
You can then do any of several things:
    1. Replace your internal drive with a much larger one (320GB or 500GB, or even larger), and clone the external drive's contents onto the new drive so you'll have all your data in one place. Note that if you do this, you'll also need to buy an external drive that's large enough to back the new internal drive up on.
    2. Boot from the external drive as a temporary measure while you clear at least 30-40GB of data off the internal drive, allowing you to keep using it and saving small amounts of data to it. The external drive will then contain the only copies of the files you've deleted from the internal drive, so you'll need a seond external drive large enough to back both the other drives up on.
If you can't comfortably clear a minimum of 30GB off the internal drive, you really need a larger internal drive right now, and you shouldn't bother fooling around with the inadequate one you have — you'll just quickly overfill it again.
    3. Replace the optical drive in your MBP with a large conventional hard drive, giving you two hard drives inside the machine. You will then need one or more external drives large enough to back up both of the internal drives.
If you sense a theme here — back up, back up, back up — you are correct. It's flat-out foolhardy to own or use a computer without maintaining complete, up-to-date backups of everything at all times.

  • HT3986 can i put windows on a second hard drive that is partitioned.

can i put windows on a second hard drive that is partitioned with out boot.camp deleting the second partition and making one bootcamp windows partition?
i want one partition to be OS extended journaled and one partition for windows. Or do I have to create the bootcamp partition on my main drive? . my main drive is a solid-state drive which I run OS X and it's not as big as my mechanical drive. I would like to put windows on my mechanical drive but still save a lot of the drive for my mac data. So I would like to have that drive partitioned with OS extended journaled. Whenever I run boot camp and choose that hard drive boot camp will only allow me to erase the whole hard drive and make one partition for Windows. Maybe if I put OS X also on the mechanical drive and then try? Would that work. Thank you for any information you might have. Robert

Yes! why not.Just make sure after you install windows, linux, freebsd or any other os set to use mbr if there is a gpt partition first ALWAYS gptsync.

I need to upgrade my macbook's RAM and hard drive as after 3 yrs of use it is showing signs of aging.
I am novice in hardware stuff. I am planning on doing it entirely by myself and on tight budget will need to compare the prices across sellers and buy a suitable peice of kit. Please help
    Questions:
1 - How to find out which RAm do I need to buy and what is the maximum I can go on my macbook?
2 - How to find which hard drive to buy and what is the maximum my macbook will support?

    Hi Chefjeegar
Yes that screwdriver kit has the #00 phillips screwdriver that you need to access the RAM and hard drive. You'll also need the Torx driver to change the hard drive. http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-Computer-Technician-Precision-Torx/dp/B0000934GO/r ef=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348072554&sr=1-1
For a good explanation about RAM look at the page on OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/
In the UK Amazon or eBay might be your best bet for cheap RAM but read the description and reviews carefully. For a little more expensive but with a better warranty is Crucial UK http://www.crucial.com/uk/
A good resource for working on your MacBook is ifixit.com http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Core_2_Duo
Is your external hard drive formatted for Mac? To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Put the new drive in your MacBook, then format and partition the new drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer your OS back to the new drive.
Yes, you can put an SSD in the MacBook.

  • Can't transfer from macbook to external hard drive

My Seagate hard rive is saying that it is formatted NTFS when I plug it into my new mac. I have only ever used it on a mac and it didn't ever say this when i used it on my old computer.. Im not quite sure what to do because I have no where to put all my stuff to reformat it? Any ideas why its doing this?
Also I made sure when I bought the hard drive that it was both windows and mac compatible...
My macbook is running OSX version 10.94

    $t@x Y0 wroter
Also I made sure when I bought the hard drive that it was both windows and mac compatible...
It is Mac an PC compatible if it is formatted correctly.  Unfortunately for you, the HDD is formatted for Windows.  Since formatting a HDD erases all data on the drive and you have no place to store the data while reformatting the drive, it leaves you with one option.  You will be required to install third party software such as Paragon or Tuxera which will allow you to both read and write to the HDD.
The best alternative is to get a second HDD, format it for Mac, transfer the data from the Seagate to it, and then format the Seagate.  You can always use the second HDD for backups, thus it is not a wasted expense.
    Ciao.

  • ¡Upgrading My MacBook- Memory and Hard Drive!

Hi everyone! I recently got this strange idea in my head to upgrade my MacBook! I am planning to buy 2 memory chips (RAM) and getting a 250GB hard drive (My MacBook came with 160GB). There are three problems though.
    1) I don't even know if you can upgrade the HD since there is no slot in the bottom
    2) I don't know which kind (Manufacturer and Model) of HD to get
    3) I don't know which kind (Manufacturer and Model) of SDRAMs to get
So yeah tell me anything that I might find helpful like the best SDRAMs and where to get them.

    1. The hard drive can be upgraded. See Hard Drive Replacement DIY.
    2. Any 2.5" SATA notebook drive will work. Sizes available from 80 to 320 GBs. Only the Samsung 500 GB drive will fit in a MB. Drive speeds are available in 5400 or 7200 RPM. Manufacturers include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Samsung.
    3. The 2008 MB models use PC2-5300 DDR2 667 MHz 200-pin SODIMMs. You can install up to 4 GBs. See Memory Replacement DIY.
You can purchase RAM at Data Mem or MacSales.com. Drives can be purchased at any resource that sells them such as:
    Data Mem

  • System Hangs After A While:  Processor or Hard Drive?

I have a Early 2008 iMac that works fine for the first 30 or so minutes then begins to hang or show the beach ball of death (BBOD), especially when I try running two or more programs at the same time. I can be doing something with iTunes and try to open Safari and it will literally hang for several seconds (sometimes minutes). I can try to open Activity Monitor but it too will hang. Eventually the second program will open then Activity Monitor (3rd program) will eventually pop up. Sometime Activity Monitor will open first and will indicate the second opened program, like Safari, is unresponsive so I use Quit Process to stop the software from opening/starting.
As I mentioned, this is after I've been on the iMac for say 30-40 minutes. I have recently updated my SDRAM as I had read a thread that the dreaded BBOD was indicative of faulty memory and sure enough, I found by running Apple's Hardware Test that the original 1 GB of SDRAM was bad so I replaced it with 2 GB which brought me up to 4 GB. I run AppleJack periodically, just to keep the Permissions and Verifications happy.
After several hanging episodes, I ran TechTool Deluxe and the software runs through its entire process and when it gets to Volume Structure, it will run through the entire test and just when it gets to the end, I'll see a quick flash of Fail but the report will finish and the written report will say it Passed (?!)
Since it takes awhile for the hanging symptoms to appear, I'm wondering if its heat-related. But I'm not sure if it could be the processor or the hard drive itself. I will say my internal optical drive died some time ago (that was a long iMac Discussion thread that I too wrote in bemoaning the demise of my iMac's optical drive and it appeared several other iMac owners had the same issue too).
BTW, the Apple Hardware Test passed the processor and hard drive. And I apologize if this sounds similar to the Apple Discussions Intel-based iMac thread _System Hangs, Freezes iMac 8,1_ but I haven't upgraded my OS to 10.6 (and that seemed to be a current theme) so I didn't chime in on that thread.

I have checked the S.M.A.R.T. status in Disk Utility and it does say Verified. I also verified Disk Permissions and while it took a little time, it eventually worked its way through it.
Then I ran AHT and it passed. Then I ran it in the extended mode and the computer locked up after about two minutes.
I was able to borrow a USB drive installed with Apple Service Diagnostic (OS) for my generation of iMac and booted to it. I ran some tests, with one of them being a hard drive test, which it failed. So I think I have my answer. Thanks for your suggestions.

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

  • To save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

to save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

    Yes.
To preserve your projects, all moves should be done from within iMovie, (not the Finder).
First, the external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). FAT32 will not work. You can reformat using Disk Utility if you need to.
When importing video from your camera, you can specify your external drive as the target on the import screen.
For existing projects, you should move using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#move7d66613
There is an error in the instructions where it says to drag the project icon to the icon in the Event Library. You should instead look for your hard drive icon in the Project Library.
You can move events using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6d42c
If you want to move Events, and copy photos, copy music, etc for editing on another Mac, you should use the FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA feature after moving the Project as above.
