Can I put a Quicksilver 867mhz processor in an older G4/466?

I have a G4/466 (Digital Audio) with 1 gig of RAM. I make music in Protools, and I've added some plug-ins recently which are bogging me down. I checked out the activity monitor, and the processor is maxed out most of the time. I have a dead G4 Quicksilver which I've already stolen the RAM and hard drive from, and now I'd like to take the 867 mhz processor. Will this work? If so, where can I find instructions on how to do it? I'm not really interested in buying an upgrade--if it comes to that, I'd rather just stop using the plug-ins and save my money for a new computer.
Thanks!

Hello Andrew,
Haven't done it yet, but I'm getting ready.
There's a picture floating around the forum somewhere, and I think the original article is on the XLR8yourmac site.
Start with a spare connexion meant for a second hard drive; then take a Molex extension or splitter and tap into the 12 volt wire (test with an inexpensive voltmeter). I think you also want to tap into the same connector (different wires) for a 5 volt lead and ground for a fan. The DA 733 cpu has a plug for a fan, but the 867 QS cpu does not, as I recall. I think you'd want the fan.
Attach the 12 volt wire to a terminal that has a round hole, and then connect that to the fourth hole of the cpu with a #6 machine screw and nut.
Please consider this provisional; as I say, I haven't done it yet, but I think that's how.
Good Luck!
Jon

  • Can I put a dual processor in my power mac g5 which only has one processor right now

Can I put a g5 dual processor into my power mac g5? I have a power mac G5 but it only has one processor so I wanted to upgrade to the G5 dual processor found in the later version power macs. Would I be able to do this? If i could do this would i need another fan or other parts? I was also thinking of putting more ram in and another hard drive. PLEASE HELP

Exactly what to do with ram and video is hard to say without the model details.  You can go to http://www.everymac.com and click on Power Mac G5 and then find the machine you have.  The detailed info on the machine will show how much and what type of ram you can put in (I always use ram from either OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com) and also gives the installed video card info.  OWC would also be a good source to see what video cards are available that will work with that logic board.

  • How much ram can I put  In a 12" 867MHZ?

    Hi,
I've just picked up a 12" 867mhz Powerbook for a very reasonable price! My question is how much ram can i put in it? It currently has 640mb. Also if i can put some more in it will it run Leopard?

Bear in mind you can customise the install of Leopard to exclude some languages and particularly exclude printer drivers that aren't relevant to you, this will substantially lower the total required space. 12" Powerbooks are rather fiddly to work on - here's a really thorough guide on Hard drive replacement etc. for your Powerbook:

  • Can I put a MacBook processor and hard drive in a PowerMacG5?

I have a late 2008 MacBook that is showing its age and wear. The battery is worn out and the keys and mouse sometimes stick. I also have a PowerMac G5 which has an older operating system, but great working keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Can I put the processor and hard drive of the MacBook into the PowerMac and have a desktop version of the MacBook.

I have an older black MacBook 2007 era and use a Henge Dock when I want to connect it to my TV with a wireless keyboard/trackpad.
you would have to check to see if this is compatible with your particular model:
    http://hengedocks.com/pages/vertical-macbook
an alternative is a stand, which would allow you to use the laptop display, in addition to another external display, on your desktop:
    http://store.griffintechnology.com/elevator
PS- I have replaced the battery in my MacBook twice now, if it starts to swell up it can interfere with the trackpad button, causing it to register the button as being held all the time, which interferes with an external mouse as well.  you can find replacement batteries here, an Apple store may not have them in stock.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Apple/Laptop/Batteries
to hook up the monitor, you will need one of the appropriate adapters, not sure what knid your MacBook uses, my older one has the miniDVI, they make adapters to go to standard VGA or DVI monitors, there were a few different video ports on the MacBooks, you can lookup the specs of yours at www.everymac.com if you are not sure what the plug type is.

  • I have the following Apple Computer: Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4, 2 MB per processor. Can I put install new Intel Xeon processors in place of the current ones to bring my Mac up to the MacPro standards and so I can install the new Mac software?

I have the following Apple Computer: Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4, 2 MB per processor. Can I put install new Intel Xeon processors in place of the current ones to bring my Mac up to the MacPro standards and, if so, can I then install the new Mac software (Lion)?

As has been clearly stated, no, no, and no.
If such an upgrade were possible, it probably would be more money than it would be worth.
If you're running a G4 (dual-processor even) you can pick up a used Mac mini (intel that is, and something from 2010 or newer would be the best bet) that will be screaming fast compared to a G4.
Once upon a time, processor upgrades were not only possible, but a good deal, and a relatively inexpensive way to get more life out of your Mac. I upgraded a G3 tower to a G4 for  few hundred dollars, and I was glad I went that route at the time. Finally,  CPU upgrades, at least as far as I know, aren't available anymore.

  • Can you put 1GB RAM in a Powerbook G4 12" 867MHZ?

I want to add more RAM to a Powerbook G4 12 inch 867MHz, which only has the 256 MB RAM it was shipped with in it.
I know Apple officially say you can only max out your RAM to 640MB by upgrading to a 512 MB but I've read elsewhere online that you can actually put a 1GB worth of RAM in.
Obviously it's the latter I'd like to do. Can anyone tell me the specs of the RAM I should buy?
    Specifically, could I put 1GB 200Pin PC2700 DDR SO-DIMM RAM in my 12" PB G4?
I'm going to buy it online so want to be sure it will work.
    Thanks in advance.
    MK

Here are some additional RAM resellers that corroborate the fact that you can put 1 GB of RAM in an 867 MHz PowerBook G4 12-inch:

  • Stock Quicksilver 867Mhz 2001: Max internal drives?

I am a little unclear on maximum drive expansion possibilities with this machine.
    a) 3 lower internal drive bays:
Documentation says "Support for up to two internal ATA drives". Currently I have 2 drives in the U-shaped drive carrier in "Drive position 3". I see an unused power connector. Can I put a 3rd HD in one of the empty lower bays "as is"? Not at all? Or with some additional hardware?
    b) 2 upper bays:
One is occupied by the original SuperDrive.
Documentation says I can put in an "optional Zip drive in the other upper bay". This bay's metal container looks smaller than the SuperDrive one. Is this only for Zip drives - or can a second DVD burner go in there? Or do I have to replace the original SuperDrive to have a faster CD/DVD drive (i.e. Lacie DVD+-RW Internal drive with LightScribe 16x)?
    TIA
    Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 867Mhz 2001   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi TonyCMac,
    Firstly, welcome to the discussions.
You can put a third drive into the lower bay, but you will need to run it either off the bus for the optional Zip drive (which is quite slow), or via a PCI controller card.
You can put a second DVD burner into the free upper drive bay, but it will involve physically modifying the Mac because the bay in its present state is not big enough.
I have seen a thread (which I don't think is accessible anymore) which describes the bay enlargement process, and it is quite involved, and only for the adventurous handyman.
    Cheers!

  • Putting old Quicksilver 733 CPU in newer logic board (820-1342-B)???

I bought a Quicksilver logic board (820-1342-B) to replace my old 820-1276-A model. My question is this: Can I put my old 733 CPU, native to the 2001 Quicksilver, in the newer logic board which originally supported 867, 900, and 1ghz CPUs?
I'm thinking I need a CPU native to the logic board. Your thoughts are welcome!

I am using a G4 733MHz Silver Tower and I am wanting to upgrade before having to shell out the big bucks to purchase a new Mac, I found a new 1.6GHz processor on https://eshop.macsales.com, a reputable site I have used for years to keep Mac going. I am a graphic designer and primarily use my Mac for Photoshop, Illustrator and Quark, but know I am needing to add video and web editing to my repertoire and my current system can't handle these apps very well. My question is, does anyone know if I can upgrade my logic board/motherboard by simply putting a new one in, I mean will it even be recognized or work at all? F.Y.I. another site I have used for Mac parts is www.dvwarehouse.com. If anyone has done this with any success please share your experience or knowledge about this sort of thing, thanks.

  • Can't put the computer into sleep if VPN is connected

I think I have found a win7 bug. The problem is that I can't put my computer into sleep if VPN is connected. The VPN client I used is Microsoft VPN client. The VPN works fine.  But if I click sleep button with VPN connected, the computer screen turns
black, the fan speeds up, and the signal light tells me the computer is  still on, not in sleep mode. When I try to wake up my computer by tapping the enter key, space, or moving the mouse, it just doesn't work at all: the fan speeds faster and faster
and the computer heats up. The only thing I can do now to save my computer from darkness is to hit and hold the power button, powering off the computer. The sleep function works just fine if the VPN is disconnected. I can easily wake my computer up by tapping
the enter key. I don't know whether this problem is only present on my computer or universally present on all win7 computers.
The following is my system info:
OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
    Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
    OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
    System Manufacturer LENOVO
    System Model IdeaPad Y460
    System Type X86-based PC
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU       M 460  @ 2.53GHz, 2534 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

    Hi,
Please collect the report for the further troubleshooting. Note:Please do the following steps when VPN is connected.
    1. Click Start, type in “cmd”, right click it and choose “Run as administrator”.
    2. Type in the following command.
    Powercfg –energy
    3. Find the report file in the location showed in Command window.

  • HT201364 if i have 10.6.8 can i put mavericks on this computer

if i have 10.6.8 can i put mavericks on this computer

Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

You can seach the net for solutions like this one http://appletvvpn.com/how-to-connect-apple-tv-2-to-vpn/ another idea is to use a PC as the control and fit that with a wireless card and set up a ad hoc wireless network that the Apple TV uses.
