Can I put an AirPort Extreme card in a G4?

I have two G4's and just demoted one to my kids'. I need to buy a 2nd AirPort card so they can connect to the internet but all I can find in the stores and on the Apple site is the Extreme card.
1. How do I know if my older machines are AirPort Extreme enabled?
2. Why are the original AirPort cards twice the price they were in July?
Thanks!

Unless your G4 is a Firewire 800 model it takes the older Airport card. Under the Apple menu the "About This Mac" will tell you which model you have after you click "More Info..."

Since those cards are no longer manufactured their prices are going to continue to go up if you can find one.

No you can not use an AirPort Extreme card with your PowerBook.
Your PowerBook G4 400 MHz requires the original AirPort card.

  • Where can i buy an airport extreme card for my powerbook

Where can I buy an airPort extreme caed for my powerbook? are they even available, if not how can I go wireless ?

eBay is a good source, though as ever, buy wisely and make sure you get the right card for your specific model.
Alternatively there are wireless cards available that go in the card slot. Again eBay is full of them but be sure they're OSX compatible -  its a good idea to put this phrase in your search terms.
I can vouch that this one works as I'm using it now:

It just plugged straight in and was recognised as an Airport Card. This is from the UK site but I'm sure you can find the same thing wherever you live, or at that price just have it shipped.

  • Wire bracket in iBookG4 - can't clip in airport extreme card

The airport extreme card is installed and works but I can't put back the keyboard because i can't get the clip to sit back in the slots. Others too have tried. Any ideas please or should I just use pliers? Thanks.

Check that you inserted your AirPort Extreme card
    "completely".
Check that the antenna cable isn't under the bracket.

US sellers abound, with numerous European sellers as well.

  • My eMac can't find installed airport Extreme card

    Hello everyone,
Having bought a netgear wireless modem for a wi-fi connection, I was told to install an airport extreme card on my eMac, which I did - several times. But the eMac says he can't find when I look for it, either in the internet setup or in the general information about the hard and software. I also installed the accompanying software. Why can this be ? Thanks for your advice!
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It's an eMac (USB 2.0) model. I'm not certain I should try to push the card in more ? Are those cards defective frequently ?
Which eMac do you have? You can use KB 86325, eMac: How to locate the serial number
and identify your model to determine which model
    you have.
If your eMac is the "eMac (ATI Graphics)", "eMac (USB
2.0)", or "eMac (2005)" the AirPort Extreme card is the correct
    wireless card.
If your eMac is the "eMac", it requires the original
AirPort card and is not compatible with
    the AirPort Extreme card.
Assuming that your eMac is compatible with the AirPort Extreme card, one or more of
the following must be true if the eMac is not
    detecting the card.
    The card is not installed
    correctly.
    The card is defective.
    The
    eMac's motherboard is defective.

  • IMac G4-can i use a Airport Extreme card to connect??

I'm a bit confused..which macs let you use an airport extreme card, which are for the normal airport cards, and which require 'something else'??!
I have a iMac G4, not sure exactly which OS (I know it's OS x but not what the numbers are). It's around 4 years old but I've been told I may need to get something else as well as the airport cards? It's passed on info so sorry I can't be more accurate!
It's to connect to a MIMO belkin router, apparently that's fine if i get the right thing
any help would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks

Duane--please forgive me if I am not doing this right, but I am new to the discussion area and haven't figured out how to post a new question for everyone to ask. I have a 17inch flat panel iMac, 800mhz processor speed and am looking to purchase an airport card from e-Bay. I see various people selling and I know I need the original airport card. But my question is: are there more than one models of the original airport card? For instance, one seller is listing an original airport card model # M7600LL/A at a certain price, and it lists my computer as being one of the computers that this card will work with. Another seller has an original airport card model # M7600LL/E for a much lower price. But the description is rather bare of information. Is this the same card just at a different price? Or are there different models of the original airport card? Thanks in advance!

  • How can I get an Airport Extreme card to recognize a Nintendo DS WiFI?

With an Airport Extreme Base Station the Airport Admin Utility lets you enter the hexidecimal code for the DS (Nintendo calls this the "MAC Address".). The Airport Admin Utility will not open because I do not have a base station. My iMac is connected to the web by ethernet cable and I use this iMac as the base station for my wireless network. Where can I enter the "MAC Address" for my son's DS?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   1st edition

My son got a DS for Christmas. I have the Extreme base station and I had to use WEP security and not WPA. You have to get the WEP key from the Admin software. According to the Nintendo Wifi site, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection USB Connector is not compatible with Macintosh so you can only use a base station. This is from the Nintendo web site:
Will I be able to use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection if I have a Macintosh?
As long as you have a wireless router that is compatible with the Nintendo WFC -- and almost all of them are -- then you will be able to connect to the Nintendo WFC from your home. For gamers who do not have a compatible wireless router, and do not wish to purchase one, Nintendo offers the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection USB Connector as an alternative. Unfortunately, this device is not compatible with Macintosh systems. You can still play by connecting at a local Hotspot, or purchasing a compatible wireless router.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I put my Airport Extreme in an SMC cabinet?

I would like to place my Airport Extreme router inside a structured media cabinet but am concerned about cooling. Any thoughts?

The AirPort Extreme setup manual is pretty clear. The Extreme should be be mounted horizontally out in the open on a desk or top of a cabinet to allow for proper cooling and correct operation of the wireless antennas.
If the media cabinet happens to be metal, locating any router inside of an enclosure like this will severely affect the performance of the device.
Here is the info from the Setup Manual, which you have:
AirPort Extreme Placement Considerations The following recommendations can help your AirPort Extreme achieve maximum wireless range and optimal network coverage.
Place your AirPort Extreme in an open area where there are few obstructions, such as large pieces of furniture or walls. Try to place it away from metallic surfaces.
If you place your AirPort Extreme behind furniture, keep at least an inch of space between the AirPort Extreme and the edge of the furniture.
Chapter 4 Tips and Troubleshooting 31
Avoid placing your AirPort Extreme in areas surrounded by metal surfaces on three or more sides.
If you place your AirPort Extreme in an entertainment center with your stereo equipment, avoid completely surrounding the AirPort Extreme with audio, video, or power cables. Place your AirPort Extreme so that the cables are to one side. Maintain as much space as possible between the AirPort Extreme and the cables.
Try to place your AirPort Extreme at least 25 feet (7.6 meters) from a microwave oven, 2.4 or 5 gigahertz (GHz) cordless phones, or other sources of interference.

  • Mac Pro - can I install the Airport Extreme card myself

  • Will airport extreme card work with my emac?

I want to put an airport extreme card in my Emac. Please let me know if it will work in my machine. My Emac specs:
    Power PC G4
    CPU Speed: 800MHz
    L2 Cache: 256 KB
    Memory: 1Gb
    Bus Speed: 100MHz
    Purchase year: 2002 (before USB2)

    According to:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107440
Only the eMac ATI Graphics model and USB 2 models could take Airport Extreme.
    According to:
    http://www.designedinca.com/macs/emac/may2003/800cd/
the ATI Graphics model replaced the August 2002 to May 2003 which was also 800 Mhz.
Thus your machine was the one before the Airport Extreme became available:
    http://www.designedinca.com/macs/emac/aug2002/800/
So no, you can't put an Airport Extreme card in it. You can though get Airport Extreme speeds via a LAN capable WiFi access point via its 10/100 ethernet port.
You can also buy the original Airport card from:

  • IMac G5 PPC without Airport Extreme Card.... Can install one?

I bought a 20" iMac G5 in November 2004 and it didn't come with a wireless card. Can I buy an Airport Extreme card from Apple and install it? I've been searching these forums and there seems to be a question of whether there's already an antenna in there to connect to. Would appreciate anyone's advice and guidance.
Also, is their a USB dongle WiFi receiver that works with this iMac? Just wondering if that may be a better option?
Thank you very much for your help.

Yes you can purchase and install the AirPort Extreme card in your iMac G5.

The best wireless option is the AirPort Extreme card.

  • Setting WPA security on an Airport Extreme Card

Hi all I’m a newbie to the wonderful world of MACs having just purchased a dual 2.3 G5 incorporating an Airport Extreme card.
Now, in my simplistic world I figured that I could use the G5 connected to the internet via an ethernet router to act as a base station and allow 2 PC laptops to have wireless internet access too. Also, it would be good to allow these laptops to share the printer connected to the G5 and, absolutely ideally, share files too.
The internet sharing part of this all this works fine up to a point – that point being until I try to secure the wireless network! I’ve tried using the WEP solution (in both 64 and 128 bit modes) but the laptops just won’t connect, even though they can both actually see the network. I also understand that WPA is more secure than WEP anyway so I thought I might try that instead. Trouble is, I can't find where I can set this up for the AE Card.
So basically – could anyone tell me, in simple terms, whether I can use just an Airport Extreme CARD (rather than a full Base Station) to give me WPA security in the setup that I’m trying to create?
It seems that the card itself DOES support WPA if it’s connecting to an already-enabled network, but all I can find in the configuration options for the card is the WEP security (which I can’t get to work AT ALL!) I tried using the Airport Admin Utility to set WPA-Personal mode (which I understand is equivalent to WPA-PSK mode?) but that only seems to be for the Base Station.
I have spent the last 2 days trawling through as much information as I can find (including on these discussion pages) and still cannot find an answer.
If anyone’s still reading this rather long post and could offer any help at all, I’d be very grateful indeed.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Andy
    PS I LOVE the MAC!!!

I need to set the network id to 10.10.1.1 will a new airport extreme do this?
    Sorry, but no.
The AirPort can only be set to 10.0.x.x, 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x
