Can I put apps on an external drive and run them from there?

I want to know can I put apps downloaded from the Mac App store onto an external hard drive and launch them from there? The storage on my mac is full and I want to put apps onto an external drive to create more space on my mac.

Bad idea.  See this:

  • ItunesU videos not playing in Itunes but play ok if you download to laptop's drive and run them from windows directory

I'm having a problem playing some ItunesU videos, some play okay, some just show black screen and don't play, others show a still image but then doesn't play when trying to view them from itunes store. The audio files play with no issues.
    I am using windows 7.
However, if I download the videos that don't play to the laptop's drive and run them from the windows directory they play okay. I don't want to have to download videos to see if they are something I'd like to watch.
Just for reference, an example of a video that plays okay is by UC Berkeley Math 16A 001, Fall 2011. Another is Introduction to Robotics by MIT.
An example that just shows blank screen is Stanford's Iphone & Ipad development, Fall 2011, both HD and SD versions.
While an example of a video that just shows the initial image but doesn't play is Harvard's Statistics 110. If you adjust the time of the video, the video moves to that part of the video but only shows the image at that time, ex. at 13:02, but doesn't play.
I've tried reinstalling quicktime first, then itunes. I've also tried putting directdraw in safe mode, but the problem videos still won't play.
Could it be some setting, since it plays when the file is downloaded but won't play straight from itunes store online (ie. pressing the play button beside the video in the itunes list).
    Help pls.

You might have more luck asking on a general Windows troubleshooting site, but my guess would be an invalid or old audio or CD driver (or firmware in the drive). You might try checking those to make sure you have the correct and most current drivers.

  • Is there a way to install Windows (with programs) on an external drive and run it from the Pro?

I have a 1TB Seagate Goflex that I am using to backup the Mac, but I want to partition it and run Windows and Windows Apps from it, rather than risk my HDD.  Does anyone have any experience doing that or have any ideas on how it might be done?  I am willing to risk the Seagate external drive, but not the laptop.

    Bob,
you could put a virtualizer such as VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop on the external drive, and install Windows and Windows apps in the virtualizer.

  • HT2688 Can I install iTunes on an external drive and store my music there?

I am trying to figure out the best way to manage my music.  600 cds that I need to upload somewhere.  I am thinking I put them in itunes and then bluetooth them to a wireless speaker.    My old school stereo needs to go but I am not sure where to begin?  Help?

iTunes, like any other program installed on a computer is only installed on the main (typically C) drive.
The media folder can be stored anywhere the user likes.
How one connects speakers to the computer is their own business and has nothing to do with iTunes.

  • I have about 130 gigs of movies on my iTunes and was wondering if I can just put them on my backup hard drive and remove them from my main computer to free up the space

I have about 130 gigs of movies on my iTunes and was wondering if I can just put them on my backup hard drive and remove them from my main computer to free up the space.

I haven't done this with an external drive, but I would imagine it works the same way as if you have multiple internal drives.  Also hopefully it works with less headache in OSX than in windows.
Anyway, move all your music over to your external, and then go into itunes -> preferences -> advanced -> iTunes media folder location.  Navigate to your drive, and pick the folder you want.  Ensure that your folders are set up like they are in your ~/Music/iTunes folder, or wherever your iTunes is currently pointing.  Then quit and restart itunes.  If your music doesn't show up, try dragging your music folder from your external onto itunes, and it will hopefully update your library.xml.
As far as Jerry's problem goes, you could try adding another music folder to your library.xml, but I really have no idea whether this will work or not.  If you want to give it a try (can't promise you won't corrupt your library.xml, so make a copy beforehand) you can find the music folder xml element right near the top of the xml file (open it with textedit/textmate/whatever text editor you want (NOT WORD)).  Curious to know if this works, and if it doesn't I have other ideas so let me know.

  • HT5260 Hi, my name is Gerard and my iphoto library is getting very large I would like to know if I can store all or most of my photos in a external hard drive and access them from Aperture?

Hi, my name is Gerard and my iphoto library is getting very large I would like to know if I can store all or most of my photos in a external hard drive and access them from Aperture?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • I can't put files on my external drive.

I use Pogoplug to make my external hard drive available on the internet.  Everything worked fine until today.  I tried to put a file on the drive and got the following error message:" Items can’t be copied to “Pogoplug” because you don’t have permission to read them."  I checked the permissions and they are "Custom" (don't know how that happened). Did research on the web and Apple forum, tried changing with BatchMod and Terminal to no avail. I ejected the disk from the desktop, restarted the MacBook - all to no avail.  Doe

Look for a Backups.backupdb on the hard drive level of your computer and delete it.

If you are booted off the hard drive, you have a partition.

  • HT1751 can i put my films and shows on to an external hd  and watch them from the external drive on the pc

i am enjoying downloading films and shows from itunes on to my pc but hd space is becoming an issue can i copy the files over to an exrenal  hard drive and delete the orginals  and watch them from the external hd   thus saving space on the pc ?

Drag the existing iTunes library to the external drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, and point it to that instance of the library.

  • I have my iphoto library on an external drive, but it filled up.  Can I have another library in another external drive and use them both?

I have old pictures in my external drive that I filled up.  I would like to make another iphoto library in a new external drive and have this one for new pictures.  Can I do that? And how will I be able to see my old pictures on my older external drive? My iphoto is 9.5.1.

Yes.  Another way to switch between libraries is with this menu in iPhoto:

  • Can I install Leopard on an external drive to run my computer?

Since it seems my hard drive has totally bit the dust, can I install Leopard on the external drive I use for Time Machine, and run my desktop from that drive? Could I run it from an external drive totally dedicated to Leopard? I am buying a new desktop soon, but I need info off of this machine. Can I plug in my Time Machine drive to my laptop and be able to use it without losing data?

    Thanks so much.
    Youa re welcome!
I figured I would have to use a second drive. At least when I get my new desktop I will have a drive for Time Machine for both desktop and laptop.
If you really plan to keep the laptop around after you get your desktop, I would recommend replacing its internal hard drive. While running your laptop off an external is possible, it should be considered a stopgap measure. i wouldn't do it on a permanent basis. For one, as you'll find out, it's quite a bit slower than when using the internal drive.

  • Can I store music on an external drive and point iTunes to it?

My wife has a G4 with a 20gig hard drive. Can she buy an external drive and just use that for the music?
Would anyone tell me the procedure we would have to do to get this working? She doesn't ever need to disconnect the external hard drive we would purchase.
    Thanks

  • We have an early 2008 imac and we realize it is not long for this world but we would like to get a few more months out of it until we can afford a newer one. Can we put in a larger hard drive and add some memory?

Would it be worthwhile to put in a larger hard drive and boost the memory on our early 2008 iMac? We realize it is on borrowed time but we would like to squeeze a little more time out of it.

  • Install Windows 7 on external drive and boot iMac from it?

    Hi everyone,
I want to use Windows 7 on my iMac, I would like to install Windows 7 on an external drive and boot my iMac from this external drive. Is this possible? If yes, any good tutorials?
(I am aware of virtual machines, but am wondering if I can do the above).
    Thank you.

Forget trying to use Windows 7 that way.
Add another internal drive to your iMac.
Not knowing which iMac whether you have dual SATA internal like the 2011s.
Those were not "tutorials" but just whatever Google would come up with (a good start but not tutorials or dealing with 7 or hope of success, yes?)
Why? to avoid what you forsee as complications? Not "dirty" or interfere?
Windows tools exist for Windows to import and image and deploy.
You can run Mac OS on any bootable external.

  • How do I combine iTunes movies and music on external drive and play both from same library?

Trying to make an old MacBook with current iTunes a server for Apple TV. Have burned DVDs to external drive and have added my music to drive. iTunes made a library on the external drive. When I open iTunes to choose a library, I can either get all of the movies or get all of the music, but I cannot choose something that is both. I have even dragged the movies into the same file as the music, hopping that would help, but alas, I can still just have one or the other.
Any help would be so appreciated.
    Thank you.

Choose one library and drag the files from the other to the library in the open iTunes application window.

  • Can i keep files into my time capsule and delete them from my mac?

i have to many files in my mac and i'm running out of space so i want to put the photos and music only on my time capsule and delete them from my mac, is that possible?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Of course you can do that, but it won't work if you are using the Time Capsule to make backups. In this case, I recommend to leave your Time Capsule as your backup drive and buy an external drive to put your photos and music on it.
If you aren't using your Time Capsule for that, you can do it
