Can I re-install OS 9 on a drive with OS X?

This question appeared earlier under an incorrect subject line. My apologies.
I am unable to boot from OS 9.2.2 on a G4 that I use almost exclusively with OS X. I am wondering if there is a way to re-install OS 9 without disturbing the rest of the hard drive. I have the OS 9.0.4 disk that came with the computer, which will boot the machine.
My motivation to use OS 9 now is that I have to re-install an OS 9 program in order to use an OS X upgrade disk that has to see the OS 9 version to upgrade. What a pain!
Thanks.

Hi, BC -
Yes, you can do that.
Use the Software Install CD that came with the machine (not the Software Restore CD - the Restore CD installs too much, and careless use of it can cause the drive to be wiped clean).
Do a Clean Install of OS 9.0.4 (a Clean Install of OS 9 will not erase anythig on the drive), followed by installing version updates to take the OS 9.0.4 to the final version you need. You will not be able to skip any of the intermediate versions to get to the final one.

Article #75186 - Mac OS 9.2.2 - Download and Info
You can also start with a retail OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.1 Install CD (all retail OS 9 Install CDs have a white label with a large gold 9) to reduce the number of download updates needed; do a Clean Install from that CD, followed by whatever download update(s) you need.
The version of the Startup Disk control panel that comes with OS 9.0.4 and OS 9.1 is not capable of 'seeing' OSX as a viable OS, hence will make switching back from OS 9 to OSX difficult. If you want to stay at either of those versions, you can update just that control panel to one which can see OSX -
Startup Disk 9.2.1 Document and Software
If the hard drive is not visible on the desktop when you boot the machine to the OS 9 install CD, that indicates that the hard drive was last formatted using OSX's Disk Utility and that the option to install OS 9 drivers was not selected. In the absence of those drivers the drive can not be mounted by any OS 9.
If the hard drive is the original, it may be possible to recover from that with erasing it. This Apple KBase article discusses that possibility -
Article #106849 - Disk Is Available in Mac OS X But Not in Mac OS 9
Unfortunately re-installing OS 9 drivers rarely works. If the drive does not have OS 9 drivers, and re-installing them does not work, then the only remaining solution is to reformat (re-initialize) the drive using either OS 9's Drive Setup or OSX's Disk Utility. If the latter, make sure to select the option to install OS 9 drivers. Caution - doing this will completely erase the drive, so be sure you have backed up anything you do not want to lose.
<hr>
A perhaps easier solution would be to get a new hard drive and install it as a second drive in your G4. Your G4 is pre-equipped to accept a second drive - cable connections, both data and power, are already present. This drive could then be used solely for OS 9 purposes, and perhaps also as supplemental file backup for the original (OSX) drive.
Having the two OS's on separate volumes will also asllow the use of Startup Manager during boot to select which you wish to use for startup at that time.
Article #HT1310 - Startup Manager: How to Select a Startup Volume
If you opt to do this, be sure the drive does not exceed 128GB in size. The built-in controller for the hard drives has a hardware limit of being able to 'see' a drive no laarger than that; drives larger than 128GB can be used, but will appear as being only 128GB in size after formatting. Because this is a drive size limit, and not a volume size limit, partitioning will not get around the limit.

Hello Ian. I am currently using Lion installed on a WD My Passport 500Gig drive connected to my MBPro via USB, which is still running 10.6.8. Like you I am not prepared to lose all my currently functioning Mac, but also like to see how the new OS runs before making the total switch, maybe when it gets to 10.7.2
So after you download Lion and select to run the installer it will show you which disk to install on, being the default SL drive you downloaded Lion with. But here you can click Other Disk and select the external HD. The installer will run and then boot into the external drive to complete the installation. From then on you can use Startup Disk or the Option key to select the preferred OS.

  • Why can't I install Tiger on an external drive?ne is

I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard. For reasons I won't get into, I need to have a Tiger boot volume. I have any of 3 external drives I could install it on (one is a FireWire hard drive, one is a USB, and one is an iPod). However, the Tiger installer won't recognize any as valid drives. On the window where you pick the drive to install, they all have a red "!" on them and on mouseover it says something like "Tiger cannot be installed on this drive. Your Mac cannot boot from this drive."
    Why?
Could it be because I'm using the Mac OS X install disk that came with my MacBook Pro when I bought it in 2006 and not a separate Tiger installation CD?

Limnos is onto the correct path, mostly. Install DVDs for Intel Macs require an external drive to be partitioned with the GUID partition table in order to install onto that drive. If the drive is formatted with the Apple Partition Map (APM), or something else, the OS X installer will not install onto the drive. Also, the volume must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
You can check the partition scheme of the drive with Disk Utility. Be sure to select the Drive (size/model# in the list), not the Volume (whatever name you gave the drive), and look at the bottom right - will either be GUID Partition Table or Apple Partition Map.
Note that it is possible to get the OS onto an APM-partitioned drive, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and successfully boot an Intel Mac, but the OS must be cloned onto the external drive (e.g. with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner) from an Intel Mac - it cannot be installed directly from the Tiger install DVDs. I have a LaCie external drive with APM partitioning, and I can boot my MBP in Tiger from that drive (and my wife's PB from it as well, since the bootable clone of her machine is on a separate partition of the drive).
Having said that, since you have upgraded to Leopard, I suspect you no longer have an MBP running Tiger to use as the source for that bootable clone. So, you'd need use Disk Utility erase one of your external drives (FireWire is best for an external boot disk, although Intel Macs will boot via USB as well - it's just slower), and set it up with the GUID Partition Table (one partition, or more if you like), Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, then the Install DVD should recognize the drive as a valid target for the Tiger installation.
    Hope this helps...

  • Can CS6 be installed on a non-boot drive partition?

I'm going to run CS6 and Avid MC6 on the same machine (iMac), and thought it would be a good idea to put them on separate partitions to avoid any conflicts.  Avid apparently MUST be on the system (boot) partition... can CS6 be installed on a non-boot internal drive partition?

It can, but shared components will still end up in your Application Support and Library folder, so this is a moot point. you are trying to avoid something that you can't influence.

  • Installing Lion clean on hard drive with multiple partitions

I have a spring 2008 24" iMac running Snow Leopard.
I am about to put a new 2TB hard drive in it and after I do that I want to do a clean install of Lion on it.
I do not want to upgrade my Snow Leopard install to Lion. I will keep it on my back up drive as a fallback incase of serious workflow incompatiblities with the new OS.
For my workflow I create and use multiple partitions (Mac OS,  Windows and multiple HFS+ for data) on my hard drive and I have seen that Lion creates it's own hidden recovery partition as well for the recovery functionality.
    My questions are:
    1) Will I have issues running Lion on a partition on a hard drive with multiple partitions that have different file systems?
    2) If I install Lion into one of these partitions will it create it's recovery partition within the space of the partition it is being installed into?
    3) I will be creating a clean install by downloading Lion using the App Store and then burning an installer DVD using instructions I found elsewhere and then using that to do the install on the new drive. Is that the best route to take?
All my current data I will have on a backup external hard drive and after I complete the Lion install on the new larger drive I will manually reinstall all my software and move my data back from my backup drive to the new drive one partition at a time except of course for OS partition. I keep all my real user data outside of that partition anyway.

I believe this article answers most of your questions.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
    or possibly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649
You will most likely run into the error message that "Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk" if you have multiple partitions set up, especially if they were not set up using Bootcamp and/or have serveral different file systems.
You can confirm that the Recovery Partition will not be installed by checking Disk Utility for your current partition map scheme.
This is most definitely not the end of the world as it is quite easy to create an external Recovery disk.
    1) No, you shouldn't have issues running Lion, but Recovery HD will not be created.
    2) No, and in your case it doesn't sound like it will be installed on your internal drive at all.
    3) Yes. If you begin with an empty partition, then install Lion that would be considered a clean install.
    Hope that helps.

  • Installing  LaCie DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe 16x E-IDE with DL

Have just bought the LaCie DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe 16x E-IDE with Double Layer for an incredible price if $44.99. Geeesh, why are they so cheap these days? I did researched this with LaCie customer/tech services and they indicated once the face plate is removed it will install easily into my PM G5 Dual 2.5GHz (Rev B model).
Has anyone else installed this and if so are there any issues to be aware of as part of the install process - oh, and did it work AOK ?
Thanks for any insights and/or feedback on this. I should be getting the LaCie burner next week sometime.

    FYI...
OK - so I received my LaCie - LaCie DL DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe E-IDE, with Double Layer today. I thought I'd post my install experience before it all faded into the murky past. ;-)) I do this in order to help myself and for others who may wander down this install path. There are a few minor gotchas that if known ahead of time will make the install easier and less thought provoking for having to make decisions on how best to proceed.
Let me say up front, the install was successful, Apple's DVD SuperDrive device design is superb in that it allows easy removal in a dimensionally constrained space and the new LaCie device is now fully operational. I've played a DVD movie, it's compatible with the .Mac Backup 3 program after loading LaCie's software and my PM G5 Dual 2.5GHz (Rev B) now recognizes the device as a DL DVD burner (Vendor Supported). I've yet to use the LightScribe Labeler software, although I've installed it all from the supplied discs and latest updates from LaCie Support web site at http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers and select DVD from the drop down menu selection. I'm very pleased with this LaCie device at this moment.
Here's the install process step by step
    1. First power off and disconnect all external devices from the PM.
    2. Get your wrist strap on and ground yourself to PM casing.
    3. Lay PM on its side and remove metal side panel and remove clear plastic panel.
    4. Rotate both plastic latches that hold the SuperDrive in place.
    5. Disconnect the SuperDrive's flat wire ribbon from Motherboard - it has a convenient handle for pulling it straight up and off. Once disconnected, push it thru the opening to where the SuperDrive casing is located. This will be more obvious when you are actually doing this.
    6. Open the SuperDrive's Alu door by pressing lightly on it and sliding it down.
    7. With Alu door open use a finger nail to engage a portion of the SuperDrive's tray opening and push up and towards yourself and at same time with other hand pull up the rear most portion of the SuperDrive's casing. The drive should slowly slide away from its feet slots much like for the HDs. Slowly remove the SuperDrive and before it is fully out remove its power connector and then the flat wire ribbon from rear of SuperDrive. The SuperDrive can now be completely removed. Note that on my SuperDrive the flat wire ribbon was attached to SuperDrive's casing with a grey two-sided sticky pad. Remove the ribbon carefully from this and then remove the sticky gray pad and affix it to the same place on the LaCie device. Rememeber the wire ribbon's orientation as you will need to re-install this a little later.
    8. Remove the 4 black screw feet from the SuperDrive's lower surface. You will need a torx screw driver and may have to begin by losening them with pliers. Take these and screw them into the same spots on the base of the LaCie device.
    9. Remove the stainless steel face plate from the SuperDrive - ply up the end wraps and it will slide and pull off easily. Place this onto the LaCie device.
    10. Put the SuperDrive aside as you're all done with it now,
    11. Press the tray release button on the LaCie device and pull off its plastic face plate - comes of easily.
    12. This next step is a bit tricky, a bit time consuming and some care is needed. The LaCie tray eject button needs to be removed (you will notice on Apple's SuperDrive it's also missing, and there's a good reason for this). Use a small screw driver and pry up the right side (looking straight at the front surface of the LaCie device) of the button. It will come up and rotate to left some. The button is held on by a small plastic C-shape tab. Rotate the button to left until it comes off. This button cannot be left attached as when the LaCie device is installed the PM's Alu door opening mechanism will contact and interfer with the button and engage and press it down. Obviously this will make the LaCie device (and of course the removed Apple SuperDrive) think the tray needs opening.
    13. Leave the jumper on the LaCie device in its default "Master" location. This should be the right-most two-pin position looking at the rear of the LaCie device.
    14. Almost there - attach power connector and flat wire ribbon to rear of LaCie device and press the flat wire ribbon onto the sticky grey pad and slide the LaCie device into its holding slots by aligning those black screw feet with the slots. You may need to guide the other end of the wire ribbon thru the lower opening to the motherboard. Once the LaCie is in place connect the wire ribbon to the motherboard.
    14. Relatch the plastic levers to secure the LaCie device firmly in place.
    15. All done - so replace the plastic and metal side panel, reconnects things up and power on the PM. Go straight to the ASP and make sure the LaCie device is recognized and all the info is being displayed correctly. It will show Burn Supprt of Yes (Unsupported). Don't worry, once you install the included LaCie software is will show "Yes (Vendor Supported)".
Total time taken was around 2 hrs as I had to pause several times trying to figure out how to remove the SuperDrive with care and without any instructions to go by.
My LaCie - LaCie DL DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe E-IDE, with Double Layer cost me $45 from Buy.com and it does come with two disc blanks - a Verbatim LightScribe 1x-52x CD-R 700MB and a Verbatim 16x SL DVD+R.
I recorded all the gory details from the LaCie device before installing it. Here's that info.

IF all computers are on the exact same build of PrPro. Understand of course that if everything of the project is on one flashdrive, performance in playback & etc. with much in the way of effects or tons of cuts is going to be ... s l o w . But perhaps doable on say a school project, which probably doesn't have the total assets of say a season-length tv sitcom.

  • Boot Camp / Windows Partion... Can it be installed on a separate hard drive

I am just beginning to explore the idea of installing Boot Camp & Windows on a new Intel Mac I will be buying. I've been reading a lot of references to the Windows partition...
Can I dedicate a separate hard drive to Windows rather than partition my primary hard drive? If so would it be best to use an internal drive rather than a Firewire or USB drive. What would a reasonable minimum drive size be?
    Thanks for you feedback.
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
since only the Mac Pro can have more than one internal HD, I assume you are talking about getting one of them
With more than one internal HDs you can put Windows on the second, third, fourth internal HD with the BootCamp Assistant.
On a side note: Windows does not support to be booted from external HDs (neither FireWire nor USB).
Reasonable size depends on what you want to do with it.
Windows XP itself takes up to 3.5GB of HD space after installation, Vista takes up to 10GB.
Add to that the HD space you need for the programs and data you use/produce.
And when keeping in mind the hassle it takes to enlarge the Windows partition if needed, my personal suggestions are:
Windows XP at least 30GB, Vista at least 50GB.
Have you already had a look here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ especially at the Installation Guide ?

  • Why can't I install virtual devices in NI-Max with windows 7 and DAQmx 8.7.1

    Hi all!
I just got some new machines running Windows7 32 bit. The old ones didn't survive a fire, the DAQ devices were resqued. After I installed DAQmx 8.7.1 including NI-MAX I found out that my device (PCI-6014) wasn't displayed in the device section. The device was however displayed in the windows hardware section!!
I also wasn't able to setup a virtual device other than some RTSI-cable. NI-MAX version is 4.1.1.
I cannot use a newer version of DAQmx as I have to work with LabView 7.1.
Another machine, same windows7 and same DAQmx didn't give me this problem, so what could possibly be wrong? Can't use this machine as it has no high PCI slots in it....
    Regards,
    Ronald

I think you're right about that one, I should have upgraded every time when I got the new CD's. On the other hand, I developed some way in reusing quite a lot of my work. So I only have to update these vi's in order to get my programs running again I guess. The nice thing of it is that this would be the perfect opportunity to go through my work of the past 7 years and look what's really needed and what can be thrown in the bin.
About the LV7.1 version: You're right. NI allows you to use them besides your new versions. I think I've got to play a little around with my virtual machines in order to get multiple versions (and multiple DAQmx versions) running aside of each other. Lucky for me is that a lot of analysis is done after the DAQ has been done!!

  • Why can't I install CS5 extended on new iMac with my serial number?

All I wanted to do was take the serial number from my CS5 extended and install PS 5 on my new iMac (they don't have disc drives anymore). My serial number however is 20 digits and it doesn't work?? It comes up shy of numbers. Can someone explain how this can be possible? I refuse to rent CS5 when I already have a lisc. Thanks.

You need to get the serial number from your Adobe account at the corporate web site, once there go to "My Products".  You can get the s/n from there.
Adobe applications show you intentionally truncated serial numbers, with only 20 digits as you noted.  The full s/n are 24-digits long.  This is done on purpose, so as not to encourage software piracy.

I can't seem to find the audio driver that the notebook likes.  It installs fine, but then goes back to found new hardware and can't install it.

    Hi:
You first neeed to install the MS UAA driver before installing the audio driver.
Install the chipset driver first if you haven't done so already. Reboot.

    Uninstall the IDT audio driver.
    Install the MS UAA driver;
See this guide and download the MS UAA driver for XP SP3 posted there in a few places.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-systems-and/General-XP-Downgrade-Guide-for-HP-Laptop...
Reinstall the IDT audio driver, and you should be good to go.
