Can I re-partition my harddrive?

Hi all,
I'm just trying to get my head around setting up Windows 7 on my Mac with boot camp. I'm actually having the same problem downloading the windows support software through the boot camp setup assistant that a lot of people here seem to be having, but that's for another discussion...
For the moment my question is this: Say if I partition my harddrive for windows use, and then later on I realise I want more space on the harddrive designated for windows (or indeed less), is it possible to re-partition the hard drive? Or is it the case that if I partition it and give windows X gb, I am stuck with that and cannot change it?
Thanks in advance.

You must use Boot Camp Assistant to partition the drive. Thereafter use Paragon's CampTune if you need to adjust the partition size without having to remove the partition first.

I have a emac processer 1. 42  ghz power pc G4. I would like to partition the harddrive with os 9.2, 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4, Can I do it ? I've tryed to install them but The start up hard drive won't recognize the partition when I do it so I don't know what to do.

10.5.8 is the highest an eMac can install/use/boot.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard.

    Good Morning,
I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard. I shut it off took out the battery, reinstalled the battery. Then I put in the Snow Leopard CD and booted up to disk utility and The Snow Leopard partion would not show up?? I do see the microsoft partion.
I also rebooted holding down the shift key and still no Snow Leopard
Could you please tell me what I can do, what keys do I press on restart any advice to get Snow leopard back.
    thank you.

Have you restarted holding down the Opt key?  That procedure should give you a gray screen with all of the partitions that exist.  Then select the SL partition for boot.  Also go to System Preferences and Startup Disk, unlock the lock and select the SL partition as the default boot partition, then relock.

  • Partitioning the Harddrive for a scratch disk for CS1 & CS2

    Hello all...
I need to see if there is a way to partition the harddrive on the work macs for the use of a scratch disk. We have a dual 2.0 G5 and a Quad.
The only thing is the fact that there are tons of materials on these macs as we are a advertising agency and are in the process of migrating all workable files to a new mac server that was ordered this week.
Can this be done without wiping the HD first?
Our apps mainly CS1 on some machines and CS2 on the Quad seem to run a tad bit slow. Could this be to not having a scratch disk for these adobe programs.
Or should we wait until the server has arrived and then just reformat the machines at that time?
    Please help guys.

Never partition the boot drive. Even if it is used for scratch (and even if you set another drive for primary scratch the boot drive will still be used some). Keep your boot drive free of everything else except the system and applications.
Order some RAM, order a 2nd drive for each system. And a dedicated scratch disk - meaning you would need a 2 or 4-channel SATA host adapter for PCI-X.
You might want to use WD's 10K 150GB Raptor for boot drive (and yes, it works just fine on the DC/Quad G5s). The 10K 74GB Raptor makes a nice disk also and could also be used for scratch disks in a RAID. Use your original OEM drive just for local data.

I would speculate that you need a minimum of 4-6GB RAM, and 8-10GB of RAM might be in order; along with a 2-4-8 drive RAID as well.

    OS X 10G
So i installed my system into this dirve, and before i install it, the system asked me to customize the installation, so i selected those apps that i want, and it says i have 688MB left in the disk.
So i proceed, but it installed half way and stops, and says that there's not enough space to install the OS, and at this point, i can't restart, can't shut down, but can go into sleep mode.

Hold the power button down for about 10 sec. and your book should shut down. Then restart holding 'C' and try to install again. Btw, why are you partitioning your disc? If it's for Windows, Bootcamp will do this from a single partition.

Make at least two complete backups of all your data. Boot from another drive and partition this one as desired. Restore the data.

  • Can i just partition my HD by using boot camp 4.0.1 without install window?

Can i just partition my HD by using boot camp 4.0.1 without install windows?
cox i want to use rEFIt to boot up my pendrive to install windows.
Due to some reason the boot camp 4.0.1 cannnot detect my usb drive (that contained windows 7), so thats why i use the rEFIt to boot from my usb drive

    Yes, you can.
Let the BootCamp Assistant just make the partition and do not click on "Install Windows"-button.
The result is a preformatted FAT32-partition on your Mac.

  • I have 2T imac running lion Can I re-partition and use one half as a back up disk?

Bought a new mac in November and it is refused to start up yesterday. Spoke with Apple  and they said I should make sure I do regular back ups in case I l ose my hard drive?!?! I did a clean install of the Operating software but was advised to erase and install.
I have taken all my important stuff off and can reinstall my programs once I get to the next stage so what I am wondering is
I have 2T imac running lion Can I re-partition and use one half as a back up disk for use with time machine so that I do not have to buy an external HD?
    Cheers J

You could partition the drive, I read that Time Machine will work on if you HD partition.
BUT, it will do you no good if you HD fails.
Usually, if a HD fails it's the entire drive that is dead not just a partition.
So your time machine back would be on a dead disk, useless!

Yes.  Switching to Mac might be overwhelming at first, but it is not difficult.  I Just started using Macs regularly about 9 months ago after using only Windows based pc's for over 15 years.  Macs come with TextEdit , but you can also purchase MS Office for Mac or use Apple's version, called iWork.Yes, you can partition the hard drive of a Mac.  Read these also: http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/, http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/.  With regular use of a Mac, you will be able to use it without even thinking about it, just like how you learned to use a WIndows pc.

  • BootCamp can't install partition

Hi All,anyone could help me to resolve ....The disk is not journaled. You must enable journaling using Disk Utility before using the Boot Camp Assistant.

You may as well backup anyway, erase, then by restoring have all your free space in one consolidated contiguous chunk, so that you can create a partition (you aren't installing).

  • Can I resize partitions in Tiger?

I'm rethinking my strategy of being able to restore from my TM volume to Leopard. Can I resize partitions using Disk Utility without losing data while in Tiger?

NEVER change any partitions on a disk without first backing up completely and testing the backup.
I believe Tiger will destroy data; Leopard claims not to but I don't trust my disk to a partitioning agent. Leopard states that you should backup.

  • Tecra R10-10W - Can't create partition during installation

I got Tecra R10-10W and I switched from Vista to XP. I used Windows XP Toshiba recovery disk for this.
I was not able to create partition on hdd during the installation.
I wonder did I miss something?
How can I split my hdd into 2 parts? Should I re-install XP for it?
    Please help me?
    Thanks,
    Alper

    Hi!
As Akuma wrote its not possible to create or change HDD partitions during the Toshiba recovery installation.
The Toshiba recovery disk contains an image of factory settings and after this you can change the partition size yourself.
I also use Partition Magic and it works really good. If you dont have this tool you can Google for a freeware tool. ;)

  • Why can't my partition be modified

I made a partition recently for OS X Snow, I made it 20gigs and now i wsnt to make it bigger but it tell me the partition cannot be modified, Anyone know what is happening. Thanks

You can't make it bigger if there is data in both partitions. Clone all your data at least twice outside of that hard drive*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Then consider erasing one partition so you can reallign the partitions.
