Can I reboot my new iMac running OS 10.7 into Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an external hard drive

I have installed my hard drive from a previous but terminally I'll iMac that was running Snow Leopard into a Sata to USB  enclosure. This is displaying on the desktop of my new iMac running Lion as an external Hard drive, also system preferences sees it as a start up source. My question is , is it safe to restart into Snow leopard without causing a kernel panic and if it does boot will it be fast enough to use as it as a USB drive.I know I could try it and see, but I would rather some advice.
Regards
John Lewis

Yes you should be able to (as long as your computer didn't ship with lion, if so idk it would prob work though) although be aware it will be MUCH slower than the normal OS. Hope this helps!

  • I have an iMac running system 10.10.3.  I would like to use an external hard drive to save all my iMovie projects.  How do I transfer the files and tell iMovie where to find them?

How can I move all my iMovie projects to an external hard drive and save all future projects to that same drive without constantly getting the 'can't find files' statement?  I am using iMovie 10.0.7,

Have a look at the help files on this at:  http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0.8/#/mov3fa25bae7
You can have multiple libraries if you want and save them anywhere.

  • Can one buy a new top of the line MacPro with Snow Leopard on it directly from Apple store?

I'm considering a new Mac Pro desktop with two identical video graphics card, a bazillion GB of RAM, etc., but want no part of Lion and/or Mountain Lion.  I'm wondering if Apple still sell them.
Has anyone bought one such beast from the Apple store recently?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the lightning fast response, mende1.
From the lack of Snow Leopard options at the Apple store, I was already getting the impression that it was not feasible anymore.  It's good to know for certain.
That leaves me with the choice of a used/refurbished Mac or a Windoze box with Windows 7 on it, which can still be obtained from HP, and maybe Dell and others.
Just as I want no part of the stinky lions, I want no part of Windows 8 either.
From my point of view, the engineers at Apple and Microsoft lost their minds with their latest operating systems.  It's mind boggling!

  • New MacBook Air: Video clips I've shot don't show up from my external hard drive

Bought the smaller Mac Air for international travel, intending to use the an external for all the video I edit.
Brought an older external drive (last used last year on an overseas trip) with back-ups of lots of video clips there.
I want to mix my old video and my new, but I open up files with names like, "Do not delete, these are your favorite photos and video clips", that I saved last year, and they only have photos in them.
There is more than one file, that I was expecting to find important video in, that is empty.
WTH?  Are the videos hidden somehow?
If so, how do I find them?

Hi rockstardeb, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You shouldn't try dragging it, rather use Migration Assistant in your Utilities folder and choose "Transfer my data from another partition".

  • Need to move (consolidate) my iTunes files (media/library) from my external hard drive (i use time capsule as an ext hd)  back to my main iMac where my iTunes is located.

I used my time capsule (1st gen) as an external hard drive to store my iTunes files and my iTunes app is on my main iMac.  Now, I've decided to move those iTunes files from my external hard drive (TC) back to my iMac where my iTunes app is located.  What is the best way to do this?

Is the Time Capsule the right piece of kit for the job?
    Not really, no.
TC is a dumb as board hard disk in an airport extreme router. It has no media servers.. no backup.. it is slow and designed for TM target for laptops. The major one here is lack of backup. Any files you put on the TC can and will be lost at some point.. and to backup you need to have a computer connected to it with an external hard disk.. and a 3rd party backup because TM is too dumb to back up network drives.
TC is designed to spin up slow and spin down quickly at the end of backup. You will have issues when you stream media from it.
ATV needs to connect to itunes server.. not the library. You will still need a computer running. Same for lots of things.. since apple designed their system to be dependent on itunes.
The best idea is a media computer.. a mac mini is ideal. Don't need the latest greatest.. but an actual mac running itunes. Unfortunately it doesn't have large internal drives.. so it is still a bit kludgy in needing a fast external drive.. but at least you have automatic backups.

  • Can an intel iMac run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive?

Hi can anyone please tell me if it is possible to run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive on an Intel iMac running OSX 10.5 Leopard or later?
Or is it possible to partition the intel iMac's hard drive and add Tiger?
At the moment I am running Tiger on a partitioned hard drive shared with OSX Leopard and wish to upgrade to an intel Mac. I need tiger to run some software not compatible with newer Macs and also to access OS9 Classic. Thanx for your help.

IF you upgraded from Panther as you know you do not have an Intel based iMac. I beleive the limit of your upgrades on your current machine is going to be Leopard. The system requirements for Snow Leopard are:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply
This is straight from Apple so yes if you want to go beyond Leopard then you must purchase a new machine. My suggestion would be to begin replacing your legacy apps, you are extremely far behind and the longer you wait the more painful it will be to get current.
    Good luck.

  • I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space, and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run t media from an external hard drive? If so, how do I transfer my files?

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

  • I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?

I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?
I have a 2012 mac book pro can I use that to connect with firewire and load osx that way? and how woudl I do that?
    Thanks so much!

To what password are you referring? Do you mean your user account's admin password? Or do you mean the master password for File Vault or do you mean a Firmware Password?
    For an admin password:
    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Can iphoto be run from an external hard drive?

Can iphoto be run from an external hard drive?

As BD says: keep the application on your startup drive.
This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Why will Photoshop CS4 not open after loading to new iMac from an external hard drive and I get this message: Licensing for this product has stopped working:error code: 150:30

A Photoshop installation is tied to the machine it was installed on. Moving it to or from a hard drive breaks the licensing.
The answer is easy: Reinstall CS4 from your disc. and apply all updates.

  • Can i run i tunes/iphoto from an external hard drive?

does any one know if i can run ituens/iphoto from an external hard drive and if so how do i do it?

Drag the libraries to it, launch each application with the Option key held down, and point them there. The iPhoto library needs to be stored on a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended.

can i download and run itunes from an external hard drive?

The iTunes application should be on the boot drive but you can keep the iTunes library on an external.
hold Shift when launching iTune sand select Create library and select the external.
This will create an iTunes folder on the external with all the library files and all media will also go into this folder.
