Can I recover my new hard drive shrinked after formatting errors?

Hi, I wanted to install a 500 Gb WD drive in a G4, but forgot about the size limitation. I copied the OS and apps using Target mode to a 75 Gb volume, and the empty volume was 390 Gb in size. When I booted, the large volume was only recognized as 52. Never mind, I had a program called Drive Genius which is supposed to allow resizing drives without erasing the contents which I had already copied back to the smaller volume. So I ran the program on the drive to make two partitions below 300 Gb. But this program made unrecoverable errors, and one of the new partitions was dead and gone. I tried everything, from repairing to erasing the whole drive, and I am now left with a 128 Gb drive and unable to recover the rest of it. This program does really a mess, it's the second time I try this and second time it jams a drive. The last time I could reformat it, but not this time. Do you have any suggestions? ...Or just sympathy for the dead drive? Thanks!
Paul
I should add that there is an ACARD PCI 2x ATA 133 in the tower, so 300 Gb drives should be OK.

I am a bit confused. If the drive is plugged into the PCI card then it should work with 500GB. If it is plugged into the G4's native bus (which I assume is an older G4 with the 128GB limitation) then regardless of the number or size of the partitions it will only see 128GB of a drive. So where's this thing plugged into now?
I have only read about Drive Genius and resizing partitions. It's the kind of thing that I think if it works, great, but I want to have a backup of my drive before I try it.
I am not sure what is left of the drive contents after all the partitioning and formatting. You could try using an application such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy.
There is also this free tool which supposedly runs on OSX (Intel only? - not sure) and does recovery of popular media and Office files. [http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download] I have no idea if it works and maybe you're tired of testing software on this drive by now.

  • Can I restore a new hard drive from a previous time machine back-up?

    Hi there,
My MacBook Pro 13 inch is 4 years old.
The computer began to freeze/stop working, so I took it to an Apple care centre and they informed that my hard drive has crashed and has to be replaced.
Luckily, I backed up my old hard drive a few days before with an external hard drive using Time Machine. My question is: can I restore this new hard drive with my old time machine backup that is on my external hard drive? If so, how do I do this?
    Thanks

Of course! If you couldn't, Time Machine would be rather worthless, now wouldn't it?

  • MBP 5.5 can't see my new Hard drive

MBP 5.5 can't see my new Hard drive even though its running Mavericks off the new Hard Drive through a usb cradle

I've seen suffienct posts on this site to not argue about the problems with SATA cables, however it sounds like what you're saying is that the SATA cable is bandwidth limited. The types of things I remember reading about are actual breaks in the cable, rendering it useless for all drives, or the insulation wearing off. In the latter, it's on units where the cable crosses over an optical drive and starts intermittently shorting out on the case. If this happens the user typically gets data corruption, but the drive is usually seen and visible.
On the other hand, I do software development and we have to be able to boot numerous versions of MacOS. For reasons known only to God (and Apple, I hope) once in a while the NVRAM seems to get mixed up and ends up being unable to see the boot drive. Doing the resets always corrects the problem.
I wouldn't dismiss your recommendation of replacing the cable, but the resets are free and easily done.
Another freebee to try would be to hold down the "alt' key before powering on the unit, turn on the power, and then, while holding down the alt key, see if the drive shows up as a bootable drive. This will only work if there's an OS installed on the drive.
In my opinion, it's always best to try the free things before going out and buying anything.

  • Where can I get a new hard drive for an LC II (80MB)

I have a complete Macintosh LC II that saw most of the family through University (and me retraining as a dentist). The hard drive is an IBM HDD 80MB 3.5" WDS-L80 - does anyone know anyone still selling these/ can I use a substitute. Would like to keep the Mac as a feature in my office/study.

Wow, i just went to buy.com and their homepage is so messy i couldn't even find the computer stuff.
So out of curiosity, i checked eBay and 80GB SCSI hard drives are grossly overpriced. $50 is a lot even if it's new, which most are not. You might make an offer on one that's "buy it now or best offer".
But here are two possibly better sources:
    1. Check craigslist in your area for old used Macs. I suspect you can put in a SCSI hard drive up to at least 512 MB in size. (or do you want the "stock" hardware config..? )
    2. You could check state surplus in your area for old used Macs, but they're likely recycling anything that old if it comes in. You might talk to their computer person and ask if he'll save any "vintage" Macs for you if any come in.
I have an LC 475 someplace. Pretty cool little computer.  I might actually have an extra SCSI HD around too that i could part with.

  • I have tried and tried to repair my Powerbook G4 but I keep getting the error message that the hard drive can not be repaired Can I get a new hard drive, how much, where? Thanks!

Did you try zeroing the Drve before installing?
      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

  • Activation: how can I recover from a hard drive crash?

My hard drive crashed on me...  All my data is safe, but now I have to figure out how to reactivate both Lightroom 3 and CS3.
I have rebuilt the failed machine with a new hard drive, but it was getting rather old so I also took the opportunity to purchase a new machine.  My intention is to get Lightroom and CS3 installed and registered on the new machine.  I understand that under normal circumstances I could deactivate Adobe products on the old machine, install and reactivate on the new machine.  But since I rebuilt it, the old machine doesn't actually have Lightroom and CS3 installed and activated -- no activation, so no chance to deactivate.
I see two options.  Which is easier?
I could reinstall both Lightroom and CS3 on the old machine, activate them, then deactivate them, then install and activate on the new machine.  If I reinstall and reactivate on the old machine, will Adobe's activation service recognize that I'm reactivating on a machine that already had Lightroom and CS3 installed (everything is the same except the hard drive)?  If not, will I be able to activate since I will be trying to activate an already-activated license?
Alternately, I could just install on the new machine and attempt to activate there.  I expect I'll run into problems, again because I'm trying to activate with a key that was used to activate on a different system.  I expect I'll have to phone into Adobe to clear this up.
I'm concerned that if I take the wrong path it will make it more difficult to get everything working in the end, possibly to the point where Adobe will refuse to allow me to activate my licences on my new machine.  Does anybody have any advice?
    Thanks.

Since CS3 is not a shipping version there is NO activation needed, only the current shipping version. Install CS3 and insert the serial number.
Do the same with LR. No install, uninstall, gymnastics needed nor phone calls to Adobe Tech Support.
I did this when my power supply shorted and took the whole machine up in smoke, all four hard drives worth. When I got the new computer I just installed CS2 with the license and no activation needed.

if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
    etc.,

  • Can't Install on New Hard Drive

I just installed a new sata hd for my g5. I am trying to install os x on the hd, but when I go to click continue twice, there is no volume to choose for installation. I ran disk utility and nothing shows up there either. I am positive that i intalled the hd correctly, because my old hd worked again.
Does anyone have a clue what's going on??

I emailed Hitachi support and got this response.
    It works. Just a pain!!
Hard drives of SATA type interface does not have jumpers to configure. You
can still use a SATA 3.0Gb/s drive (set to 3.0Gb/s) in your system, but it
    will only work at 1.5Gb/s.
If your have a PC system, you can temporarily install the drive internally
and use our utility called Feature Tool that'll allow you to change various
ATA settings. This utility has the diskette and CD version. If you do not
have a floppy drive and are unable to create a Feature Tool diskette, you
can select the Feature Tool CD image. The fourth download link is for the
image file. This file will allow you to create a bootable CD version of
Feature Tool when a floppy diskette drive is unavailable. For instructions
on how to properly use this file, please refer to the documentation
included with your CD burning software.
If you have any questions regarding the usage of Feature Tool, please refer
to the User's Guide (see page 17 on how to change the drive capacity). The
Feature Tool and User's Guide can be downloaded from the following URL:
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#FeatureTool
Before running Feature Tool, ensure that your system boot sequence (in your
system BIOS) is set to boot to your CD ROM drive as the first device.
Insert the bootable Feature Tool diskette or CD that you created and let
the system boot to this CD.

  • Lost serial number for microsoft office and can't reinstall on new hard drive

I recentlyt had to replace the hard drive on MacBook Pro and can't reinstall Microsoft Office because I don't have the required  serial #. I think it was originally installed when I bought the computeer at an Apple store. Any ideas about how to solve this problem?

Try contacting MS and see if they have the registration code since they had to activate it originally.
Do you have the receipt from your original purchase?  That will itemize what was installed beyond the packaged operating system material.  That will add proof of purchase.

As was recommended, OWC (and a huge variety of other places) have drives that will work for what you need. They may be larger and they may be sata 3 but those are backward compatible. See the following link: http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/?Ntk=Primary&N2=6905&Ns=P_Price%7c0&Ne=5000&N=6 905&Ntt=toshiba and call the phone number at the top or use the live chat at the top to verify.

  • Can't back-up MBP hard drive to external, getting errors

I am trying to back up my hard drive to an external (WD My Passport Essential SE) in Disk Utilities (after booting failed). Was getting error-61 until I changed the external format to Mac OS X compatible. But now I am getting an input/output error.

Or use FW drives while you still can. MUCH better performance and since the FW bus has 1.5A available for the peripheral, vs the USB's 0.5A, can handle a wider range of buspowered drives, especially the terabyte monsters.

I have a windows desktop computer. Can I install a new hard drive and install ios mavericks on it? In other words, convert my windows desktop to a mac?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You may be able if your computer meets some requirements and if you don't mind putting your PC in risk, but it's not legal to install OS X on non-Mac computers. See the OS X Terms of Use > http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/OSX109.pdf
