Can I reformat an MS-DOS harddrive for OSX?

I have a LaCie 250 GB harddrive that had been used with a Windows computer and is formatted for MS-DOS (FAT).  Is there a way to reformat it so it can be read and written  by OSX?

Can Macs even boot from a FAT32 volume?
No. The drive's file format must be HFS+. The partition map is separate from the file format.
Can one choose the partition map in Disk Utility? I cannot find this option.
Yes. You can go through the steps to see how it's done. Just don't hit Apply, or you'll wipe out the drive. You can't do this test on the startup drive, so choose an external or other physical drive.
Open Disk Utility and click on the physical drive icon at the left, not one of the logical drive names. Such as shown next.
After selecting a physical drive, you'll have the Partition tab at the right. Click on that heading. Notice below the graphic for the Volume Scheme, that Options is grayed out. Change the pulldown for the scheme from Current to anything else. Even just one partition again. The Options button will now be enabled. Click that to show the partition map options.
While some fairly recent Macs will still boot to a drive set as Apple Partition Map, Apple strongly recommends against using it. It's being phased out in favor of GUID. The latest Macs are unlikely to boot to a drive set to use Apple Partition Map. When trying to install OS X to such a drive, it will even tell you it can't be installed on the chosen drive. Click Cancel and then close Disk Utility. It will tell you there are unsaved changes. Click Quit so nothing is applied.
If one reformats the disk and chooses HFS+ in Disk Utility, it will automatically use GPT, so a less experienced user doesn't need to worry about partition maps.
No, it won't. The partition map will not change no matter how many times your format a drive. You must set the proper partition map manually. So in this case, the user must use Disk Utility to first change the partition map from Master Boot Record to GUID, if they plan on using it as a bootable OS X drive. Even if not, it's still very much recommended to change it to GUID.

  • Can anyone recommend a good external harddrive for iTunes backup?

I would like to backup my files externally. I really dont know too much about this stuff. Can anyone make a suggestion for an external harddrive? Thanks!

I have an AcomData 120GB, a Western Digital 200GB and a Fantom 250GB external HD. All are working well. LaCie is another fine brand. I usually buy the major brands by price. Expect to pay $0.50 or less per GB (my last ExHD was $90 for 250GB).
If you are very concerned about longevity, then look at the Seagates as they carry a 5-year warranty (at least on the internal laptop drive that I have purchased).

    Hi,
Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at f11 as you start to access Recovery Manager which you can then use to reinstall the Operating System.

can I back up my photos on my iphone directly to an external harddrive for safekeeping? My iPhone is full and my Mac laptop is full. What is the best solution besides buying a new laptop?

Not "directly" but you can use the MacBook to send the backup to the external HD.
    iTunes > preverences > advanced
Use the function buttons to change the location of the Media Folder Location.

  • How can I reformat my ipod touch for mac

How can I reformat my ipod touch for mac I used to have a PC I've all ready tried to restore several times but it won't work. What can i do?

Just plug it into the mac, and do a restore. Make sure you are plugging the ipod into a usb 2.0 port and not through a keyboard or usb hub. Also if itunes offers to use a backup during the restore, don't use it.

  • External hard drive can't be found as a backup disk in time machine and I can't reformat it in Disk Utility.

Just bought a samsung 500gb external hard drive because I need to backup my mac to do a full system reboot because it is completely messed up after downloading the new yosemite update.
But when I go to time machine it isn't offered as an option for a backup disk. I go to disk utility and I can't reformat the hard drive from MS-DOS (FAT) to Mac OS extended (Journaled). I try to change it and it reverts back straight away and I can't change the name of my hard drive. I don't understand what I have to do, i'm currently in safe boot because my laptop runs too slow in normal mode.
    Any help would be great.

Select a new partition in disk utility.. change the drive options then to GPT from MBR.
And then select Mac OS for the format.
It should work.. if not get a friend with a mac to help you.

  • How can I reformat my Mac Book Pro without using disc utility? My laptop keeps crashing, and needs to have everything reinstalled, but disc utility will no longer open, saying it 'quit unexpectedly'. I'm running Mac OS X10.6.8. I've lost install CD.

My laptop keeps crashing. This seems to happen only when it's streaming from sites such as Netflix, YouTube or Spotify.
Also, it stopped being able to run iTunes, and can't download Yosemite.
I want to wipe it and reinstall everything - I've already done a full back up.
The problem is disc utility will no longer open, saying it 'quit unexpectedly':
I'm running Mac OS X10.6.8 and I've lost install CD.
I have no idea what to do, but need to get this sorted as quickly as possible as I need my laptop for work.

Even if you could open Disk Utility you can't reformat a disk while you are booted from it. You will have to use the install CD. Ring the Apple Online Store at the number given at bottom left of this page and give them the serial number of your Mac. You should be able to get the Snow Leopard install disks for a nominal fee.

Apple has really crappy NTFS read-only that does not always work. And it is probably a licensing issue.
Paragon Software is constantly being updated and supported with their NTFS for Mac OS X - they also have an HFS+ driver for Windows that works - Apple's HFS+ read-only driver for Boot Camp / Windows does not.
I keep seeing problems and lack of support for MacFUSE, that could change.

    Paul,
Descriptive name of the module is set in the window registry. You can only get the BASEPATH like $AP_TOP.
Descriptive name of the page can be found from WEB_HTML_CALL from FND_FORM_FUNCTIONS_VL?

  • I am new to a MAC.  I have an external hard drive that I used with my Windows XP computer.  Can I reformat it

I am new to MAC.  I have an external hard drive that I used with my former computer running Windows XP.  Can I reformat it to use with my new MAC?  If so, how do I do it?

Yes you can. See the following:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • I brought second hand iphone4 but i cannot open it because the owner forgot her apple id and password, how can i reformat this without reformating my phone outside?

I brought second hand iphone4 but i cannot open it because the owner forgot her apple id and password, how can i reformat this without reformating my phone outside? what can i do to open this? its till on the set up mode

There is nothing you can do about but ask the seller for your money back.  Without the previous owners applid password, you cannot activate and use that device - there is no way around that.  iOS 7's Activation Lock needs to be disabled by the previous owner in order for you to use it - if they cannot (or willnot) produce the password to disable it, you have no options.
They can disable it remotely for you - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5661 but not if they do not remember their own password.

  • Can I reformat the space created by a single tap of the space bar?

Can I reformat the size of the space created by a single tap of the space bar?
What I would like to do is have the space bar create a double space [with just one tap of the space bar] between each word in the current document I am creating.

    I would use Auto-correction
    string before = standard space
string after = EN QUAD ($2000)
    or EM QUAD ($2001)
    or EN SPACE ($2002)
    or EM SPACE ($2003)
    In the first line,
    between a & b I inserted a standard space
    between b & c I inserted an EN QUAD
    between c & d I inserted an EM QUAD
    between d & e I inserted an EN SPACE
    between e & f I inserted an EM SPACE
    In the second line,
    between a & b I inserted a standard space
    between b & c I inserted two standard spaces
    between c & d I inserted an EM QUAD
    between d & e I inserted two standard spaces
    between e & f I inserted an EM SPACE
So, it seems that EN QUAD or EN SPACE give the exact wanted space.
Now, it's time for me to try to find the difference between EN QUAD and EN SPACE
According to Wikipedia, they are identical but EN SPACE and EM SPACE are the preferred ones.

  • Using external HD from a WinXP system with MBP - can't reformat external HD

    Hi,
I have an external hard drive that I've been using with my Windows XP desktop computer. Before I got my MBP a month ago, I stored my iTunes library and all my digital photos on the external HD. I'd like to use the same HD for my MBP, but I can't reformat the HD when I connect it for the first time, as all of my music and photos are on it.
Will this be a problem? If so, what, if anything, can be done to ensure that I can use the HD with my MBP while maintaining the integrity of the existing content?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks.

    USC2000
If you have enough space on your MBP, of course, you can simply copy the stuff on to it from the external, then reformat.
Your MBP should be able to read the drive without it needing reformatting regardless. If the drive is formatted as Fat32, then Leopard should be able to both read and write to it. If it is formatted as NTFS gthen it will be able to read, but not write.
One thing to be aware of, though, is that USB 2 drives are much slower than Firewire ones on Macs (and also a little slower than when connected to USB on most PC's) . If this is a USB drive you might want to think about getting yourself a good FW drive instead for use on the new computer.
    Cheers
    Rod
