Can I refund my smouldering Macbook Charger

Hey Guys,
During my holiday, the most inconvienient time possible, my macbook charger wire has started to smoulder. This is as far as I know no fault of my own, as I like to think I keep good care of my possesions. I always try to keep the charger in areas with ventilation and this was no exeption.
The wire coming from the transformer has burnt bare and it provides intermittent charge (I wouldn't charge my mac unless I absoultely had to on this connection). I am within my 1 year warranty and am wondering if I can get a free replacement charger should I visit an Apple Retail Store.
Thanks.
PS: There are others on the web experincing or have experienced similar problems.

Only an Apple store genius bar tech can say precisely if it will be replaced under the warranty...so take it in as soon as you can and see what they say.  We are fellow users here and cannot speak for Apple.

  • Macbook charger on Macbook Pro?

I forgot my charger for my MBP at home and want to know if I can use my buddies regular Macbook charger he's not using. TIA.

Yes, you can use the MB adapter to run your MBP. But it won't provide sufficient power to charge the battery while you are using your MBP.

  • Can i use a 85 watt charger with a new macbook air

Can i use a 85 watt charger with a new macbook air that comes with a 45 watt charger. One says its 14.8 volts and the other is 20 volts.

To be clear, the wattage of the adapter is not the power delivered to the Mac, but rather the power the adapter is capable of delivering.
Think of it as the difference between a 200 HP and a 400 HP engine; both can drive at a certain speed with no issues, the difference is what happens if you floor the gas pedal.
The same is true between the higher wattage power adapter that comes with the iPad and the one that comes with iPhones; you can use the higher wattage adapter to charge and iPhone with no issue, but if you try and use the iPhone adapter to charge the iPad it may work, but it will take much, much longer.

    Hello cass528,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Air would not power on.  I recommend following the steps in this article when experiencing an issue like this:

  • Can my damaged macbook charger be damaging my battery?

hi there, a couple of weeks ago the magsafe connector of my brand new macbook charger (85 W) felt into a bowl with some melted ice cream in it. Essentially the charger is now damaged, it originally kept glowing even when disconnected but after cleaning it as best i could it began to only light up when plugged in as expected however it seems to have deteriorated from there:
i can always get it to charge eventually but only using one side of the magsafe (can't flip back and forth between sides) but sometimes it takes some wiggling to get the light to illuminate so it will charge
it seems to charge unusually fast, but maybe thats just because im paying attention now that i think theres an issue
the battery drains a lot quicker than it previously did (my laptop is only 1 1/2 years old battery has 494 cycles )
most recent issue is that twice within a few days of each other there has been an incident of the laptop just going black and requiring the power button to be held to get it to start up again citing the message ' Your computer shut down because of a problem' etc etc.
I am aware I should have replaced the charger immediately to be safe but I can't afford the £65 price tag at the moment as im a student and i thought because it initially seemed to charge as normal that it may be okay. Does it sound like this has done some permanent damage and if so what is the issue and (how) can it be fixed?
    Cheers.

You should be fine. Take it into your local apple store.
The only issue I could see is someone claiming that it was 'abuse or neglect', but that's up to the person you deal with.

You may not be able to get a refund, since the terms of sale for the iTunes Store state that all sales are final. You can contact the iTunes Store, explain the reason for your request, and ask, though:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact.html
It's possible they'll make an exception for you, particularly if the problem was on their end preventing the movie from downloading in a reasonable time.
    Good luck.

  • Using MacBook Charger

I just got a new MacBook for my wife(btw, very nice machine) and I noticed the battery charger is significantly smaller than my MacBook Pro.
I also saw that the battery charger for the MacBook Pro is rated as 85W versus 60W in the MacBook.
My question is, can I use the MacBook charger to charge my MacBook Pro? It would be nice if I could do this as I can carry a lighter charger during travel.
    Comments?
    Thanks.

Thanks. Seems like the MacBook charger can charge MacBook Pro!!!
I tried it and I saw the light was on when connecting the MacBook adapter into my MacBookPro so I assume this is indeed working/charging.
In this case, if a MacBookPro owner wants to buy a second adapter, why should anyone buy a BIGGER and HEAVY adapter (in MacBook Pro) than a much smaller one in MacBook? And what is the purpose of having a 80W adapter when 60W is enough???

  • What MacBook Charger Do iNeed ?

So iHave A Late 2008 MacBook Pro (15 In.)
& iRecently Broke My Charger, iWas Going To Get A Fake Charger But Then Found Out It Could Damage Your Computer
I'm Looking To Buy A Legit One From Apple But Don't Understand Anything
iDon't Under Stand The Wats MagSafe Adapters etc.
PLEASE Help Me & Tell Me Which Charger iNeed, Thanks :D

The difference between the 3 versions of the Apple "original Magsafe" power adapter available are simply the maximum Watts (flow of electricity) that the different models can supply under maximum demand. Any of these models can be used with your MacBook, but the lower-Wattage power adapters cannot charge and run at the same time. The output Voltage (akin to water pressure) is the same, and any model power adapter that supplies the correct Voltage can be used. With too low a Wattage, your MacBook will stop charging while running, and with the lowest wattage it will continue to slowly drain the battery while connected to the power adapter when running and then slow down.
In any case, no damage will result. The opposite situation is also true -- if you have a 13" MacBook you can use the largest power adapter and it will work fine. There is no difference in charging rate or battery life whatsoever. The only disadvantage is that the larger power adapter is heavier. The price is the same.

  • New MacBook with old MacBook charger

    Dear readers,
I have a question. I am the proud owner of a MacBook Pro (13") from early 2011. Yet, I have had problems with chargers. The first charger stopped charging my MacBook after 2 months, and now, after about 6 months my replacement charger also stopped charging my MacBook (the first one was connected but didn't charge, the second one was connected, but the computer didn't recognize it was). Somehow, the new charger's don't seem to have a long lifespan. I like the white block chargers better than the rectangle-like aluminium shaped ones, since they fit better and seem to keep working longer. My sister, however, was the owner of an old white MacBook, presumably from 2006 (it was the first one with an intel processor) but that MacBook died. Well, to make a long story short, her charger works great on my MacBook but here's my question: Does it hurt my MacBook, and my battery in particular, to charge it with this old MacBook charger?
Thank you very much for your reply!
    Pieter Kroon

Your MBP came with a 60W adapter, and the old MB charger can only put out 45W. So it will charge the MBP's battery when the machine is shut down or sleeping, and perhaps when the computer is being used for light work, though charging will be slower then than it would be with the right adapter. When the machine is working hard, the battery won't be charged. You won't do the computer any harm, but the adapter will probably get hotter than the original adapter did, so be sure to use it only where it has air circulating freely around it for cooling.
