Hello,
I had the same problem this morning. After ugrading to 10.7.4 Mail.app could not import the messages, and hence, never started.
The failure message stated "The import failed. An error occurred during the import. Make sure you have available space in your home folder and try again." There was no other option button but "Quit." So I quited, checked, and confirmed there were 414.19 GB available; and I used Finder and System Report for this purpose. Afterwards I tried again. The failure persisted.
Ironically I wan't able to neither read from Webmail, nor access Mail.app. So I confirmed with the Data Center the server's status. Everything was up and running. Still, they restarted the server for the sake of certainty. The problems persisted.
So I did as suggested here. And it worked smoothly.
Since I use IMAP on my settings I went for a fresh configuration with all my mail accounts. And it worked smoothly.
Thanks William for the tip.
Thanks Shaun for marking the reply as the solution.

I have to reinstall Mail as it's not working well. How can I make a back up of my emails so as not to lose them all?

Thank you for your time Woody. Recently the Mac seems to freeze a lot, seemingly due to a problem with the airport, especially if the computer is inactive for anything more than a few minutes. Then yesterday I suddenly couldn't send or receive messages so I got in touch with my server and they reconfigured the mail account. I can now receive messages but can't send them, always getting a timed out message when I try to send an email. I phoned the server again and they said it must be a problem with Mail as we tried sending a message online from the server's webpage and it worked fine, so they suggested I reinstall Mail. So hence my original question. Sorry for the rambling! I'm not very computer minded.

  • Tried to reinstall Mail with Pacifist, now says I can't open with Version

Used Pacifist to reinstall Mail off my Install Discs since it was crashing yet when I tried to load Mail now this message comes up:
'You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X.'
    How can I fix this?

The first step to avoid these problems is not to try reinstalling things, since the problem is very rarely the application. You'll just create more problems for yourself, like this one.
You reinstalled the original version of Mail that came with your 10.5 install disc, but you upgraded from there to 10.5.8, which uses a different version of Mail. To get back to the correct version, you need to download the install the the 10.5.8 Combo Update.
If you have problems with an application, post the problem in as much detail here; don't start deleting and reinstalling things when it's not necessary.

LONG LIVE ARCH~!!!!! Hek yeah I enjoy, especially since I was a major power user of XP & strictly XP. There was everything I ever needed. The only thing was that, if there was an Open-Source alternative, I would take it. I didn't know much about Linux other than that it ran EXTREMELY well as a server just as FreeBSD does. Once I finally took the time to google Linux, read about ditributions, open source and read blogs and read community comments etc.. I was like" I gotta be apart of this~!!" because XP was the shizz. But now Linux, more specifically, ARCH~!!!!!

  • Can I delete Mail and then reinstall?

Am a new user with an iPad 2 and with Mail did a sync to bring in my Outlook contacts. Somehow it found some old contact folders too and now have a totally cluttered contacts list!
Can I delete Mail and download it and start again?
    Thanks

You cannot delete the application, but you can delete the account.
In Settings, just select the account with the messed up contact list and choose to delete all the info from the iPad 2.
Then, find the mistakes and extra contacts in Outlook, take care of them, and re-sync your iPad.

  • On 10.4.11 Mac Mail I get this: Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unnedded documents or move documents to another volume. I can't open mail.

On 10.4.11 iMac Mac Mail I get this message: "Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume." I can't open mail to do this. I have reinstalled software but no effect. How do I get into Mail to delete?

Found this on the "more like this" Worked like a charm!
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Move the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import mailboxes. Select OK and allow the import process to complete.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully imported and available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old Envelope Index file from the Desktop and this should resolve the problem.

  • I took Lion off my Macbook Pro and put Snow Leopard back on and now I can't access Mail or iPhoto. How do I get Mail and iPhoto to work with the Snow Leopard I just put back on?

Hi. I was having slowness problems with my Macbook Pro and thought I would re-install Lion but put Snow Leopard back on by mistake. I bought the computer used with Lion on it and don't have access to the USB drive or a username/password to reinstall Lion. Now I can't access Mail or iPhoto since I put Snow Leopard on.
Is there a way to get my Mail and iPhoto working again with Snow Leopard or do I have to "re-upgrade" to Lion?
    Thanks!
    Steve

You can't. When you converted those libraries to Lion's format, you lost the ability to go backwards. Unless you saved a bootable backup./clone or Time Machine backup of your previous SL installation, you're up the proverbial creek w/o a paddle.

  • Help!  Is there a way to uninstall and reinstall Mail?

    Here's my issue...
I'm still on an iMac ver. 10.2.8. Prehistoric, I know.
Almost daily, my Mail will suddenly start retrieving over a thousand or so "New" messages. These emails are not new, but just a re-retreiving of my incoming mail from the last few days or weeks. It doesn't matter if I've deleted mail, responded or otherwise. It just suddenly retrieves the last thousand or so emails that I've already been sent.
CLUE- Every time this happens, I also get a single strange email. There is no content to read/see, no subject in the header, and no email address that it's coming from! I would try blocking this specific spammer (if that's what the problem is) but there's no visible email address to block...
This happens randomly, and now sometimes twice a day. It takes me almost an hour each time to filter out the doubled, tripled, and quadrupled emails!
Here's what's awful... I was away for a couple days, and I got hit with this enough times that when I open mail, I have over 12,000 new emails, but before I can do anything, mail crashes! I can't imagine how the heck I would go about fixing this!
Do I need to uninstall and reinstall? How would I go about doing that?
    I'm not very tech savvy!
PLEASE HELP! Thanks so much in advance for any help you can give!

    Hi Ernie,
Thanks again for taking the time to help me out...
I'm not even exactly sure what the "server" is, but yes, I can actually check my email via the Internet through webmail. And the messages never repeatedly retrieve there, but I'd prefer to use Mail if I can fix this. as it's much easier to use.
When I open up Mail, before it crashes, there are 4117 that it's trying to retrieve, but there are 10878 existing messages, but I'm not able to delete very many before it crashes.
Okay. I got the info from the INBOX.mbox. The overall size is 909.2 MB.

Are there some of those I can delete? If at all possible, I'd like to keep some of my existing messages, but at this point, I'll nix anything just to fix the problem!
Thanks again for all of your guidance, Ernie!
    Matt!

Most likely because you have Finder's preferences->Advanced->Show all filename extensions unchecked. Check it, log out, and back in and all the apps should display the .app extension.
Now, back to your problem. If you installed the Security Update 2012-004, it failed to update Mail to 4.6; thus, your problem. Manually DL it from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586 and reinstall it.

  • How do I remove and reinstall Mail under iOS?

My Mail program with both my iPad 2 and my iPhone 4S keeps growing constantly in size. My iPad Mail is now at 1.7 GB. ALL messages are deleted, trash is deleted, etc. The program just isn't reclaiming storage after deletions.
I filed a bug with Apple as an Apple Developer but, after about 3 weeks, I got a message from Apple indicating that the bug had been removed because it was a duplicate. In other words, other people also have this problem (it is possible that ALL people may not have it).
Two upgrades ago, my iPad had to totally re-install from scratch (something went wrong with the upgrade). The Mail program went back to about 50 MB. As mentioned, it has now grown back to 1.7 GB (on iPad 2, only 1.4 GB on my iPhone). At this size, it is taking a significant amount of my RAM -- it was probably the reason the upgrade failed two times ago (not enough free RAM).
I need to remove my mail program and reinstall it -- or even completely refresh my iPhone/iPad.  I keep hoping Apple will fix the problem but 7.1.2 still hasn't fixed it.
How do I remove and reinstall Mail (or -- at the worst -- refresh the entire iOS device (using backups from iCloud for important settings)?
Thank you. It will probably be up to 2+ GB by the end of July.

You may a bit mixed up in your terms.
RAM in an iPad/iPhone is like the RAM in your computer. It's used to run the operating system and open apps.
On the other hand, your storage space (16GB, 32GB, etc) is like the capacity of your computer's hard drive.
If you are short of storage space, look at these links.

How to Remove “Other” Data from iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • How do I reinstall mail.app on OS 10.6.8 without an install disk

Software update recently updated my software automatically to 10.6.8 on my MacBook 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo. Apparently because i organize my applications into folders inside the root Applications folder, the mail app was not updated properly. I put the mail.app back in the root application folder and downloaded MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8. After running the update I still have the same problem I get the notice "You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X. You have Mail version 4.5 (1084/1085). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 (Build 10K549). For more information, click the Help button." I don't have original install disk available to me. I don't know what I can do to get my Mail.app to work it is very important because it sorts out all the junk mail. Is there any way to reinstall mail without the original system disk?
Please Allen Eckhart, don't want your help. Can someone else help me?

Seems Apple is making things more difficult with every OS update. Back in the day you used to be able to organize your applications instead of having them all in one folder. You used to have a lot more freedom. More and more it is just easier to use a third party app. So I'm gonna install Thunderbird until Apple comes up with an easy way to fix the mail app. it seems that eveything in help says you just gotta reinstall the system from scratch. I would rather just use an open source product that I can put into any forlder I want without having to worry about it screwing itself up. Had similar experience with Safari now it seems like it is time to get rid of Mail.
